Also, Buckeye WR DeVier Posey had a 100-yard TD in the CFL’s Grey Cup on Sunday.

The 2017 NFL season is entering the home stretch, but former Ohio State players aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. In Week 12, two Buckeyes (Rod Smith, Nick Vannett) scored their first career touchdowns, DeVier Posey earned MVP honors up North in Canada, and a handful of Scarlet and Gray alumni suited up on Thanksgiving Day.

Don’t forget! Fan voting is now open for the 2018 Pro Bowl, and there are 20 Buckeyes you can vote for on the ballot.

Here’s how Buckeyes in the NFL fared in Week 12:

Thanksgiving Football

Playing NFL football on Thanksgiving Day is a tradition, and some will find themselves suiting up on the holiday more than others — the Lions for example are an annual staple of the Turkey Day matchups.

Vikings v. Lions

The first matchup for the Holiday weekend was a cold-weather battle between the Minnesota Vikings (Pat Elflein) and the Detroit Lions (Taylor Decker). Despite QB woes throughout the season, the Vikings managed the win, 30-23.

Decker spent most of the season on IR following shoulder surgery ahead of Week 1, but was activated off PUP two weeks ago and is officially back in the mix. Elflein, even as a rookie, has been a big contributor for the Vikings o-line, and following in the footsteps of the great Buckeye linemen to come before him.

Having played side-by-side during their overlapping time at Ohio State, Elflein and Decker did the obligatory jersey swap following the holiday matchup.

Chargers v. Cowboys

The afternoon game on Thanksgiving featured the most Buckeyes of any holiday game, when the Los Angeles Chargers (Joey Bosa, Cardale Jones) hit the road to take on the Dallas Cowboys (Noah Brown, Mike Nugent, Rod Smith). The Chargers snagged the win, despite a slow start, and left Dallas in the dust, 28-6.

This was the first in over 20 games that Joey Bosa didn’t record a sack, but he did still make four total tackles and kept Dak Prescott and the Cowboys at bay all afternoon.

Dallas running back Rod Smith has stepped up in Ezekiel Elliott’s absence and claimed nine carries for 41 yards and a touchdown — in addition to two receptions for seven yards. It was the only trip into the endzone for Dallas on the day, and Smith’s first career touchdown and career-high carries.

— NFL (@NFL) November 23, 2017

Wideout rookie Noah Brown was active for the matchup but didn’t see any action.

Despite being active last weekend for the first time this season, QB Cardale Jones was once again listed as inactive for the Chargers’ Thanksgiving Day matchup. For the Cowboys, kicker Mike Nugent was inactive on Thursday with the team’s regular booter Dan Bailey coming back from a groin injury.

Giants v. Washington

The primetime matchup to finish up the turkey-day slate of games featured two NFC East rivals, New York (Eli Apple, Curtis Grant) against Washington (Terrelle Pryor, IR). The Giants couldn’t compete, and Washington claimed the win, 20-10.

With Eli Apple inactive for the second week in a row, and Terrelle Pryor headed to IR for Washington, the sole Buckeye to suit up for the primetime Thanksgiving game was linebacker Curtis Grant for the Giants. After snagging two tackles, Grant was carted off the field with an apparent knee injury and missed the remainder of the game.

Vannett’s first career touchdown

In his second season in the NFL, the tight end for the Seattle Seahawks, Nick Vannett, has seen intermittent playing time. Still behind Jimmy Graham on the depth chart, the Buckeye has been primarily used as he was at Ohio State: as a blocker.

Heading into Sunday’s afternoon contest, Vannett had 55 yards on seven receptions in 2017 and 87 yards on 10 catches for his career total. But, as the Russell Wilson-led offense struggled to get things going, he found Vannett in the endzone for the Buckeye’s first career NFL touchdown. He also had a career-high 29 yards on the day.

Tough love in the Big Apple

After missing two games, Giants CB Eli Apple is now in the headlines for reportedly almost walking out on his team, more than once. During film review on Nov. 15, Apple took criticism from his teammates and coaches for his perceived lack of effort during a recent loss, and nearly left the Giants facility.

The team itself hasn’t addressed the reports, but Apple’s absence since then has mostly been related to the brain surgery and recovery of his mom, Annie Apple. She’s posted pictures of him sleeping by her bedside in the hospital, and helping boost her spirits. Not that that it’s an excuse, but if Eli had other things on his mind during the Nov. 15 game, it wouldn’t exactly be surprising.

Not giving him a pass here but the young man is not having a great season, his mother was having surgery and he was getting called out by teammates. Tough week for a young player. He will grow from this, choose understanding over judgement. https://t.co/0G5R3aKtaj

Buckeyes revel in Rivalry Week

Most Ohio State alumni took to social media over the past week to engage in some good ole’ fashioned ribbing between rivals — real and Twitter eggs — like here, here and here. Even former head coach Jim Tressel was showing his support for the Buckeyes during Hate Week.

Several former players of the Scarlet and Gray took Beat Michigan Week to their NFL locker rooms, with Rams LS Jake McQuaide partaking in the traditional crossing out of a certain letter, and Malcolm Jenkins making a UM grad wear a Barrett jersey.

NFL veteran and Buckeye legend Malcolm Jenkins joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014, during Ohio State’s first run — and win — at the College Football Playoff. Play of the Week

Honorable CFL mention: DeVier Posey

Things may not have worked out for the former Buckeye receiver in the NFL — after a couple years and a couple of teams — but it seems like DeVier Posey has found his footing in the CFL and is absolutely killing it.

Posey put up 272 receiving yards and zero touchdowns in his three years in the NFL, but already has four games with over 100 receiving yards in his season and a half in the CFL. In 2017 alone, Posey amassed 744 yards and seven touchdowns.

On Sunday, he was named Grey Cup MVP after a game that early-on, included a 100-yard touchdown and a CFL record.

Other Notes

  • This week’s Monday Night Football matchup once again features just one Buckeye, when the Houston Texans (Braxton Miller) take on the Baltimore Ravens.
  • Jets LB Darron Lee has seen a big improvement from his rookie season to Year 2, and continues to add to his career-high sacks on the season -- claiming his third on Sunday.
  • The Saints took a surprising “L” to the Rams on Sunday after an eight-game winning streak, but just because the team didn’t win, doesn’t mean Buckeyes didn’t have a great game. Super veteran WR Ted Ginn Jr. had his third highest receiving yards of the season with 71 yards, and safety Vonn Bell had his second-most tackles of the season (and career) with 11 — this just a week after his career-high 13 tackle performance.
  • The Steelers (Cameron Heyward, Ryan Shazier) took on the Green Bay Packers (Corey Linsley) on Sunday Night Football, and Buckeye Cam Heyward had himself a day, with six total tackles and 2.0 sacks.

Injury Report and Inactives

  • Another week, another Buckeye headed to IR, this time wide out Terrelle Pryor Sr. who will miss the remainder of Washington’s season and will undergo ankle surgery.
  • Other Buckeyes to miss action in Week 12 were rookie Marshon Lattimore for the Saints (ankle) and TE Jeff Heuerman for the Broncos (knee).
  • After missing three games due to a lingering neck stinger, linebacker John Simon was back in action this week for the Colts.
  • Patriots’ special teamer Nate Ebner helped his squad on Sunday, carrying the ball after a fake punt, but was subsequently injured on the play and missed the remainder of the game.

The Buckeyes are still in the mix for another standout 2019 prospect.

With Ohio State always fighting for championship trophies, the Buckeyes are one of the programs prospects from across the country hope to hear from during the recruiting process.

Earning an opportunity to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray isn’t something to take lightly. After locking in his scholarship offer from Urban Meyer and the Buckeye coaching staff well over a year ago, four-star athlete Jaylin Simpson announced on Thanksgiving that he’s still considering bringing his talents up to Columbus.

Cutting his list of over a dozen scholarship offers down to five, Ohio State, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia, and Miami are still in the mix for the 5’11, 165-pound Frederica Academy (GA) standout.

More than talented enough to play on the offensive side of the ball, all signs point towards him playing defensive back if he winds up at OSU. Seeing time all over the field on the high school level, Simpson played quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and defensive back for Frederica Academy as a junior this season, leading the Knights to an overall record of 7-4 and a state playoff berth.

Simpson, the 16th athlete and 195th overall prospect in the class of 2019, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, isn’t the only Frederica star the Buckeyes are hoping to add to their roster, as his teammate, Jashawn Sheffield, a 2019 five-star wide receiver, is also high on Ohio State’s recruiting radar.

OSU showing interest in 2019 SF

Chris Holtmann and the new look Ohio State basketball coaching staff are hoping to build the Buckeyes back into a contender. And the only way you build a team back towards the top is searching the recruiting trail for talent.

According to Evan Daniels of Scout, Holtmann and crew are now showing interest in an under-the-radar small forward from the class of 2019.

With scholarship offers on the table from Appalachian State and Charlotte, three-star small forward Donovan Gregory is catching the eye of a number of new programs.

“It’s picking up a little bit lately,” Gregory said to Daniels on his recruitment. “I’ve heard from Clemson and Ohio State and Temple in the past couple of weeks, so it’s looking pretty good.”

The 61st small forward in the country, Gregory could watch his ranking skyrocket if he continues to light up the stat sheet for Carmel Christian Academy. Over the weekend, the 6’4 wing accounted for 45 points and 21 rebounds in a two game stretch at the Holiday Hoopsgiving basketball tournament held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Looking for their first class of 2019 pledge, the Buckeyes have yet to offer Gregory, but have dealt out scholarships to a solid list of junior wings. Among some of the small forwards Holtmann and Ohio State have sought after are Wendell Moore (Concord, NC/Cox Mill), Majok Deng (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic), and Harlond Beverly (Southfield, MI/Southfield Christian) to name a few.

Hold the phone—this may not be a done deal.

In the movie Evita, Antonio Banderas sings the line, “oh what a circus, oh what a show” to one of the first musical numbers you hear.

Who would’ve thought that the same lyrics could be used to describe the current climate around the Greg Schiano to Tennessee murmurs.

Midday Sunday, it seemed like it was basically a done deal that Schiano, the current defensive coordinator at Ohio State, would be taking the head coach position at Tennessee.

However, things have deteriorated. Rapidly.

Fans protested the call, former Volunteer stars protested the call, and according to this tweet, it sounds like at least one booster wasn’t a big fan of the hire, either.

I am told Tennessee was going to have a press conference tonight to announce the hiring of Schiano but canceled it due to protests. Unsure if it will be rescheduled tomorrow or if the deal has fallen through. One prominent booster wasn't happy with Schiano hire.

— Jimmy Hyams (@JimmyHyams) November 26, 2017

The outrage over Schiano to Knoxville has made the potential head coach wary of taking the job. Late Sunday evening, it’s now been reported that a possible exit strategy is being dialed up for Schiano.

SOURCES: There is some talk going on now between Greg Schiano's reps & #Tennessee about an exit strategy of what has become a very volatile situation. Paperwork was in progress. “They’ve spooked them all,” said a source. "It's a hot mess."

— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) November 27, 2017

According to the Washington Post, a reason for the uproar stems from Schiano’s time as a defensive coach at Penn State from 1991-95, where he worked under then-defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, and was named in documents as allegedly having known about Jerry Sandusky’s child abuse.

Schiano was a head coach of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights before making his way to Columbus in 2016. For those keeping score at home: This is Schiano’s second season as the maestro for Ohio State’s defense.

Here’s just a brief summation of what Schiano was about to walk into: Tennessee fired Butch Jones on Nov. 12 after the Vols started the season 4-6 (with all six of those losses happening to SEC opponents). Jones went 34-27 in a little more than four years at the helm. Prior to Jones, Derek Dooley lasted nearly three years in the same role before being fired.

Will Schiano end up being Tennessee’s next coach? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Bates-Diop secured a double-double in the losing effort.

Ohio State concluded their participation in the PK80 Invitational by losing a heartbreaker to the Butler Bulldogs, 67-66, in overtime.

C.J. Jackson sparked a second half surge for OSU, scoring 13 of his 19 points. When all was said and done, his 19 points were enough to lead the Buckeyes in scoring.

Keita Bates-Diop also hit double-digit scoring for Ohio State, putting up 16 points. The forward, who is used to getting double-doubles, came up with 11 rebounds against Butler to secure another double-double on the year.

The Scarlet and Gray went 1-2 in the PK80 tournament. For the Buckeyes, they drop to 5-2 on the year in Chris Holtmann’s first season at the helm. Holtmann previously was the coach at Butler—giving this loss a little more of a sting.

Let’s take a look at how this one went down.

After a minute of scoreless play, Keita Bates-Diop introduced us to the first points of the game via a three-pointer. At the 17:19 mark in the first half, forward Kelan Martin scored the first bucket for the Bulldogs. Butler struggled in the early going, making only one of their first eight shots.

On the other end, Ohio State found some shooting success early. In their first 10 shots, the Buckeyes sunk five of them. Jae’Sean Tate—who made two shots—and Kaleb Wesson were the ones to make buckets. With that help, OSU led Butler 11-8 at the 11:03 mark of the half.

As we got to the halfway point of the half, both teams struggled to get baskets. Even though the Buckeyes were shooting near 50 percent, they went over 4:15 without scoring; the Bulldogs also went on a scoring drought of their own that stretched over a couple minutes.

Fortunately enough, scoring resumed for OSU after Kam Williams nailed a three-pointer at the 9:05 mark. On the next possession, Williams continued his scoring ways by nailing a jumper—while also getting a defensive rebound that helped set up the shot.

Going into the under-8 media timeout, Chris Holtmann’s current squad was leading his former squad, 16-10.

Coming off the media timeout, Wesson put home another basket, giving OSU a streak of 3-straight makes. Martin came back down on the other end and made a jumper to cut the Buckeye lead down to six. Immediately after the Martin make, Musa Jallow got in on the scoring, and carried home a dunk to put the Buckeyes back up by eight, 20-12.

Three-point shots were coming at a premium for Butler, as they were shooting 1-for-9 at the under-5 point of the half. In comparison, Ohio State shot only four three-pointers, making two of them. Though Butler couldn’t make their triples, they cut the deficit down to four, 20-16, at the 4:14 mark, courtesy of a make by forward Tyler Wideman.

Ohio State was outshooting Butler, but nine turnovers and another scoring drought—this one lasting over 2:29—was giving the Bulldogs a chance to hold on. At the under-4 media timeout, OSU was on a streak of four straight missed shots, but continued to hold the lead, 20-16.

Off the media timeout, Tate missed a layup, which was converted into a make on the other end by Wideman. With the Wideman layup going in, Butler had a 6-0 scoring run brewing on the Buckeyes. As Bates-Diop missed a three-pointer, Martin was able to, again, make Butler points appear off of an Ohio State miss. The run continued, forcing Holtmann to burn a 30-second timeout at the 2:18 point of the half. The 8-0 run by Butler tied the game up at 20-20.

Eight was a good number for Butler, but a terrible number for Ohio State. On top of letting an 8-0 run happen, the Buckeyes missed 8-straight shots. Missed shots helped continue the scoring drought—one that had now ballooned to over 4:30 minutes. After going to the line, Christian David hit a free throw, giving Butler their first lead of the game, 21-20.

That lead was short lived as Bates-Diop made a jumper for OSU, breaking up the shooting and scoring droughts. Quickly after that make, C.J. Jackson put home a shot of his own via an assist from Tate.

A late-half recovery was able to give OSU a 24-21 lead at the half. Bates-Diop led in both the points (7) and rebound (5) categories for the Scarlet and Gray; Tate led in the assist category with three.

Shooting-wise, Butler fought their way to the 30 percent mark, while OSU was making 42 percent of their buckets. Hurting the Bulldogs’ field goal percentage was their three-point shooting—one that was 1-of-13 at halftime. But with the Buckeyes turning the ball over 11 times in the first 20 minutes of action, the game was still within one possession.

In the second half, Ohio State hit the ground running. Layups by Wesson and Bates-Diop, and a three-pointer from Jackson were the catalysts behind a 7-0 scoring run. For the Bulldogs, a 2-minute scoring drought found them as the under-12 media timeout occurred. Butler was figuratively limping into the timeout, as multiple TOs combined with seven points from Jackson brought the Buckeyes to a 40-32 lead.

Ohio State kept up their ability to make buckets. When the under-4 minute media timeout arrived, the Buckeyes went on a stretch of making 6-of-8 baskets. Conversely, the Bulldogs were in the midst of a now 4-plus minute scoring drought. With a double-digit lead (56-44), OSU had the game in the bag—or so it seemed.

Butler did what they could to make it a comeback. The Bulldogs took advantage of a late OSU shooting drought, cutting the deficit to 59-51 with less than two minutes left to play. Then, Tate fouled out for OSU—and the wheels started to really unravel off the wagon for the Buckeyes.

With 30 seconds left to play, Butler only trailed by thee, 59-56. A 7-0 late scoring run for Butler and a 5-minute shooting slump for Ohio State were the culprits to the Bulldogs’ comeback. After calling a timeout, Butler had a chance to tie the game up.

They were cold from beyond the arc all afternoon, but at this instance they weren’t. Kamar Baldwin hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to tie the game at 59-59.

Ohio State had a chance to win the game after taking a timeout with nine seconds left. However, as Jackson went up for the layup, he stepped out of bounds on the baseline. At the buzzer, Kamar Baldwin missed the game winning three, thus sending the game into overtime.

On the first overtime possession, Martin stole the ball—but was fouled by Jackson on the layup. Martin nailed both his free throws, giving Butler a 61-59 lead. At this point, it was the largest lead of the game for the Bulldogs.

Wesson got fouled, and made one of his free throws to cut the deficit to 61-60. On the next possession, Bates-Diop got a rebound and a score to put OSU back up 62-61. But layups from Fowler and Baldwin flipped the score back to 65-63. (A Bates-Diop turnover led to those two quick baskets).

A Butler foul sent Jackson to the free throw line. He ended up sinking both buckets to give OSU the 66-65 lead, however, Butler was about to get the final word in.

Martin drove to the lane and hit a layup with four seconds left to lift Butler up 67-66. Jackson fired off a shot at the buzzer, but it didn’t go in.

Up next for Ohio State will be Clemson in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. That game will take place at Value City Arena on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. ET.

ESPN 2 will broadcast the game.
