Can the Buckeyes give the Badgers their first loss of the season?

The Buckeyes and Badgers are headed to Indianapolis this weekend to face-off for the Big Ten title. The last time these two teams met in the postseason, Ohio State demolished the Badgers 59-0, on their way to a College Football Playoff bid and eventual Championship win.

One of those points: the status of J.T. is now probable

Michigan is now in the rear-view mirror. The focus for the Ohio State Buckeyes is now on the impending showdown with the undefeated Wisconsin Badgers this Saturday in the Big Ten Championship Game.

With another game on the the schedule, Urban Meyer held a Monday press conference at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. There was plenty to talk about—injury updates, previewing Wisconsin—during his brief time at the podium.

Let’s take a look at the four biggest points from that presser, and break them down.

1. “Moved into probable. He's doing a nice job with all the rehab.”

After getting hit by a cameraman prior to the start against Michigan, quarterback J.T. Barrett battled on before getting even more injured on a tackle in the third quarter of ‘The Game’. When Barrett left the game and went to the locker room, Jenny Taft of FOX Sports reported that the injury involved the meniscus.

With a couple days of rehab complete, Meyer has now said that Barrett is elevated to being probable for Saturday’s game. A few of the questions that were directed to the OSU coach tried to go more in-depth on the injury, but he only divulged that the meniscus (i.e. cartilage in the knee) was the reason. Explaining a medical diagnosis is a tricky thing, even when you’re a football coach that has seen numerous different injuries throughout the years. But Meyer at least gave us a quick hit to the extent of Barrett’s injury.

It sucks that Barrett got hurt; this is the second time he’s been injured in a game against Michigan. The coaching staff (and fans) will now have to wait it out and see how long the injury takes to heal. Luckily, a case study on a meniscus injury has been done before. Unfortunately, though, the study says that full recovery takes upwards to 20 weeks.

However, Ohio State boasts one of the elite medical schools in the country. If there were a way to make Barrett as ready as humanly possible before Saturday, they can make it happen. I’m not a doctor, but expect a lot of massaging to occur on the knee for the next couple of days. If Barrett is good to go for Saturday night, I would expect him to primarily stay in the pocket—sorta like what he did in the first half against Michigan.

But, if Barrett isn’t ready, or if he’s struggling against the defense, it could be time for the backup to shine against the Badgers in postseason play.

2. “And more than a coach, the comfort and the confidence that those other ten players have, the quarterback is the most unique position in all of sport.”

This is starting to become a theme with Ohio State: the backup QBs are good, actually. Dwayne Haskins came in for the injured Barrett midway through the third frame, and was faced with a 20-14 deficit. By the time all zeroes showed up on the clock, the Potomac, Md., native went 6-for-7 in the air (picking up 94 yards) and led OSU on a 17-0 scoring run, ultimately securing the win 31-20.

That’s impressive, seeing that he was a redshirt freshman playing for the first time (outside of garbage time), and playing in a hostile environment in, arguably, the most important game of the regular season.

Haskins showed the poise needed to be the conductor of the Buckeye offense, and was rewarded by getting champion honors for his performance.

Going forward, knowing that Haskins can ball out against elite defenses will give OSU offensive coaches an easier night’s sleep—at least in the short term. Knowing that he won’t implode when the going gets tough, or that he won’t make bad throws, helps in trying to devise what plays will be run.

In a way, this is shaping up to be eerily similar to 2014: backup QB Cardale Jones steps up and destroys a once-thought stout Wisconsin defense for a Big Ten crown. Granted, Jones was a third-string quarterback that was elevated to backup after Braxton Miller got hurt.

Cardale may no longer be with the Buckeyes, but the testament to development by the Ohio State coaching staff remains: backup QBs are still producing in games.

That’s something that hasn’t been replicated by many schools.

3. “We play our rival you can't say we saved a little bit of energy for this next one. But also our guys are energized, ready to go for this one.”

A point that was brought up quite a few times during the presser was the possibility that the team would be emotionally drained after playing Michigan.

This is the third time the Buckeyes have gone directly from playing Michigan to playing in the conference championship game, and so far, they are 1-1. In 2013, Ohio State was undefeated before stumbling to Michigan State in Indianapolis; the following season, they ran the Badgers out of Lucas Oil Stadium, 59-0.

Prior to coming to Columbus, Meyer dealt with playing an emotional regular season finale before playing an equal, if not even more, emotional game for a conference championship. At Florida, Meyer routinely faced a pretty good Florida State team to round out the regular season. In the three times he advanced to the SEC title game, Meyer was able to win two of them.

Winning football games at an elite institution is hard. Winning games in late-November/December/January is even harder. Even through all of that, Meyer has proven that he’s one of the best.

Even though Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst has made it to the Big Ten Championship Game as an unbeaten, Meyer has the experience in surviving the potential letdown after playing a rugged finale to the regular season.

4. “Giant offensive linemen in Wisconsin. And obviously a very good challenge against an elite running back”

While Meyer may have the coaching experience, Wisconsin is coming in with a head full of steam. Last week, the Badgers chased the Gophers away en route to a 31-0 road win to secure one of their marquee rivalry trophies, Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

Don’t be fooled by the Badgers: this team is good. They have the hallmarks of good teams—offensive linemen that can block and a defense that can contain opponents—that ends up in the late stages of the season in the hunt for a championship.

In a slew of defensive categories, the Badgers rank first. Just to name a few, Chryst’s defense has the best total defense, rushing defense, and passing-efficiency defense.

Also, like Wisconsin teams of years past, they have themselves an elite running back. Jonathan Taylor leads the Big Ten in rushing with 150.5 yards per game. Nationally, that average is the third best—but it could only be done if the offensive line gave Taylor the ability to bust open.

With a combination of lockdown defense and star power on offense, the Badgers haven’t trailed in the fourth quarter of any of their 12 regular season games. In 10 of their wins, they’ve been by at least 14 points. Only Northwestern and Purdue were able to lose to the Badgers by less than two touchdowns.

In 2014, the Buckeyes stopped the Badgers’ top offensive weapon, running back Melvin Gordon. Can they do the same this time around? We’ll find out Saturday night.

Brenton Cox’s commitment to Ohio State doesn't look as strong as it once did.

Ohio State currently sits atop of the 2018 recruiting cycle rankings according to many national recruiting databases. However, now that the college football regular season has come to an end, along with many high school seniors' final seasons, the recruiting world is bound to see some shake-ups.

The Buckeyes currently sit at 18 hard commitments and are looking to add to that number; however, Urban Meyer and the coaching staff are having to put more focus into retaining commits this year than in recent memory.

One of the names that has continued to be brought up in the wild world of recruiting is elite Buckeye defensive end commit Brenton Cox (Stockbridge, GA/Stockbridge). Viewed as the No. 2 strong-side DE in the country and the No. 19 overall prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Cox garnered an elite list of suitors leading up to his commitment.

The five-star DE committed to Ohio State back in April, following the program’s spring game. He chose the Buckeyes over other elite college football programs including Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Miami, and his home state Georgia Bulldogs.

Unfortunately, verbal commitments don’t always hold true and because of this, both Georgia and Alabama have continued recruiting Cox despite his commitment to Ohio State. Cox had reportedly planned on visiting Alabama a couple weeks ago, but elected to visit Georgia instead, leaving the door open for talks of a de-commitment from Ohio State.

Jeff Sentell of DawgNation.com spoke with Cox recently and he informed Sentell that he plans on taking official visits to Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia in the coming weeks.

While Alabama is still highly involved in Cox’s recruitment, it appears Georgia is the Buckeyes’ biggest competition. Cox mentioned to Sentell that he is still committed to Ohio State, mainly due to defensive line coach Larry Johnson and his ability to develop players, but that at the end of the day, he will likely have to decide between the Buckeyes or playing in his home-state school.

“It is going to be my decision at the end of the day whether I go to Georgia or Ohio State,” Cox said, “But right now, it is still Ohio State.”

5-star Ohio State commitment Brenton Cox made a comparison to "The U" in terms of what he sees building at UGA. The Bulldogs are back in it: https://t.co/Hsi4Q2XNYV pic.twitter.com/Oaw5kvSEQO

— Jeff Sentell (@jeffsentell) November 27, 2017

So what does this all mean?

Cox is still committed to Ohio State and his relationship with coach Johnson is a huge positive for the Buckeyes. However, it is obvious that he feels more comfortable at Georgia.

“What has changed?” Cox said. “Well, really it is just the players there. The players there that I actually know.”

The ensuing official visits will shed plenty of light on his situation and the Buckeyes will need to pull out the red carpet if they want to ensure he remains committed to the program. Cox will need to spend an ample amount of time with both current and future Buckeyes in order to make sure Ohio State is the school for him.

Cox wants to enroll early to whatever school he winds up selecting, and the Buckeyes should still be viewed as the leader in his recruitment. However, like Cox has said, he is still considering playing at home.

Be sure to stick with Land-Grant Holy Land as we will keep you updated on Cox’s situation and all other things Ohio State.

Former UNC 4-star OLB commit to visit Ohio State

Four-star outside linebacker Payton Wilson (Hillsborough, NC/Orange) de-committed from North Carolina last week in a move he said was not football related. Following the move, the blue-chip prospect will be looking to visit schools in the coming weeks in efforts to figure out where he wants to continue his football career.

Wilson appears to have narrowed his list down to four schools, including NC State, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, and he spoke with Adam Friedman of Rivals.com recently regarding each of the aforementioned schools.

#Rivals250 LB Payton Wilson breaks down his interest in #NCState #NotreDame #Clemson & #OhioState + explains his decommitment from #NorthCarolina https://t.co/Z0ofJ47kYU pic.twitter.com/pC8YyfNhIE

— Adam Friedman (@RivalsFriedman) November 27, 2017

While NC State should be viewed as the favorite to land Wilson when it is all said and done, Wilson had plenty of positives to say about Ohio State.

“There aren’t many teams that can compete for a National Championship every year,” he said. “When you go to Ohio State you are practicing against the best every day so you are going to become the best you can be.”

Wilson also said that Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer has working hard on winning him over recently as well as Buckeye assistant coach Bill Davis.

Wilson is ranked as the No. 3 OLB and No. 68 overall recruit in the 2018 cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and if he were to commit to the Buckeyes he would likely be the fourth and final LB in the class.

The four-star prospect mentioned that he plans on taking an official visit to Ohio State, however it will likely come late in the recruiting cycle. This is because he knows the team is busy leading up to its conference championship game versus Wisconsin and a possible College Football Playoff bid, and he wants to ensure he has plenty of time with players and staff.

It appears that Wilson’s recruitment will likely run close to National Signing Day but we will likely learn more as he begins taking official visits.

Geography and conference alignment may play a bigger role than we’re giving it credit for.

“They may have robust discussions this season, but it seems a lot of the members may think about football the same way. They may value similar attributes (they seem to love defense) and believe success arrives through similar avenues.”

-Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

The College Football Playoff selection committee, in many ways, is a homogenous bunch. It is 100 percent male, mostly white and all members are at least 44 years of age. However, one area where they have managed to find diversity is in their geography. Current and former athletic directors represent all five major conferences, while former coaches hail from three of the Power-5 conferences in addition to Conference USA and the MAC. In three previous iterations of the playoff, the committee has shown a commitment to both geographic and conference diversity, which may stem from how the selection committee itself was chosen. In all three years, the committee selected teams from four different Power-5 conferences (as of yet, no independent team or non-Power-5 team has made it into the top four). The Big Ten, ACC and SEC have been represented in each year and, with the exception of Ohio State last season, every team has been a conference champion in the year it was selected.

While the committee’s selection of Ohio State last year might seem to be the nail in the Buckeyes’ coffin this season, given the availability of seemingly stronger playoff contenders, it actually might work in favor of Urban Meyer’s squad. Last year, the Big Ten cannibalized itself. With two worthy playoff teams, the group chose in favor of Ohio State rather than the conference champion Penn State. Rather than selecting two teams from the same conference, it chose the one it thought was the best option.

Similarly, the committee may have a choice to make in the SEC to take the conference champion (Auburn or Georgia) or Alabama. The Crimson Tide do not hold a win over a current top-15 team, and given the value the committee has placed on strength of schedule (why Wisconsin, despite being undefeated, is not yet in the top four), it would seem to be a break from the status quo to give the nod to two SEC teams, locking two other conferences out of the playoff. In addition, the Big Ten and SEC both have five teams currently ranked in the AP Poll--including three each in the top 10. The committee obviously values the strength of both conferences, but if history is any indicator, it will go for diversity and take one from each.

“But Mitchell got the nod after a week in which she became the career leader for 3-pointers in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history.”

-Mechelle Voepel, espnW.com

Fans of Ohio State women’s basketball already know that senior guard Kelsey Mitchell is probably the best player in the nation in her sport. After this weekend, it’s apparent to everyone else, too, as Mitchell was named the espnW Player of the Week following the Play4Kay Shootout in Las Vegas. Even more impressive is that this was a huge weekend in women’s basketball, with South Carolina, the defending NCAA Tournament champs, losing for the first time in nine months.

Mitchell totaled 91 points in three games in wins for the ninth-ranked Buckeyes over Memphis, Florida Gulf Coast and No. 14 Stanford in Las Vegas. In that time, the senior drained seven threes against Florida Gulf Coast to get to 402 for her career, overtaking UConn’s Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis’ previous NCAA record of 398. Saturday against Stanford, Mitchell drained 19-of-20 free throws--a single game record at Ohio State. Mitchell was the obvious selection for tournament MVP honors.

Mitchell has scored at least 30 points in 24 career games, including both outings against a very good Cardinal squad this season. In the Buckeyes’ season opener against Stanford, the senior guard scored 30 points in Ohio State’s 85-64 win. Saturday, Mitchell scored a team-high 37 in a 94-82 victory in overtime.

The guard entered the season as one of the Buckeyes’ most decorated players. A two-time Big Ten Player of the Year, Mitchell has also been a scholar athlete since her arrival on campus. She was named an AP Preseason All-American for the third-straight year after leading the Big Ten in scoring last season.

Ohio State moved up to the No. 8 spot in the latest AP Poll released today, the only blemish on their 4-1 record coming to now-No. 4 Louisville in Columbus. Next up, the Buckeyes are scheduled to face Duke in Durham, NC on Thursday night.

“Losing any game hurts, but there is something about losing to Ohio State that is eviscerating for the Wolverines.”

-Angelique S. Chengelis, The Detroit News

For Ohio State fans, Saturday’s win over Michigan was too close for comfort until the last couple minutes of the fourth quarter when the Buckeyes finally pulled away following Jordan Fuller’s interception. For Michigan fans, Saturday’s matchup was a special form of torture, especially given last season’s double-overtime loss to the Buckeyes (and yes, the spot was good). The Wolverines are now 0-3 against Ohio State under head coach Jim Harbaugh, and 1-13 in the last 14 seasons. Harbaugh is now tied with Rich Rodriguez for the worst coaching record against Ohio State, and the Buckeyes’ six-game win streak is now tied with Jim Tressel’s 2004-09 run versus the Wolverines, in which he went 6-0. Moreover, Ohio State has narrowed the seemingly insurmountable gap in Michigan’s all-time record in the rivalry to 58-49-6.

Fifth-year senior John O’Korn took the blame for the loss during an emotional press conference following the game--a matchup where, prior to last week, he was not considered the starter. Instead, redshirt freshman Brandon Peters, who had started for three weeks previously, entered concussion protocol following Michigan’s loss to Wisconsin, making way for O’Korn, a transfer from Houston, to get the start. In other quarterback news, Wilton Speight, who didn’t see the field for the last eight games of the season, announced Sunday that he is transferring...somewhere.

Despite the quarterback carousel on both sides, Saturday’s iteration of The Game earned the highest regular-season rating for a college football game that FOX has ever had, crushing the previous record set by the matchup of Ohio State and Penn State earlier this season. This year was the first time that FOX has broadcast the Ohio State-Michigan game, and it earned a 6.7 rating--the lowest rating for the matchup in the past three seasons. Last year’s rating was a 10.4--what we would expect from the double-overtime thriller on the field.

Let’s podcast about the Buckeyes tormenting Michigan yet again.

When J.T. Barrett left Saturday’s game with an injury to his knee, we at The Hangout in the Holy Land feared the worst. Just last week against Illinois, backup quarterback Dwayne Haskins came in with Ohio State up 38-0, and promptly fumbled. Urban Meyer was not pleased:

Urban Meyer, on why he put his starters back in after Haskins fumble and Illinois defensive TD: "I was pissed...I didn't want it to turn into a clown show"

— Matt McCoy (@MattMcCoyZone) November 19, 2017

The performance left us convinced that Ohio State would be in big trouble if Haskins needed to play against a stout Michigan defense. Boy, were we wrong.

Show Summary

Patrick Mayhorn and I kicked off the show talking about the bizarre injury to Barrett (1:55), and another awful first quarter for Ohio State (3:10). From the playcalling, to linebackers being out of position again, plus lots of Barrett runs, this one felt like the Iowa game all over, and was teetering on the edge of getting out of hand.

It almost did in the second quarter with Josh Metellus’ near interception in the redzone (7:10). This was arguably the turning point of the game, and that whole sequence —which ended in Barrett’s 21-yard touchdown scramble— was indicative of the Buckeyes staying in the game —and ultimately winning— in spite of themselves (10:20).

As the discussion shifted toward the second half, we lauded Haskins performance, and discussed why we were so impressed with his command of the offense (14:50). It was more than needed, as the defense constantly looked on the verge of giving up a huge play, even though they only gave up six second-half points (20:50)

We also looked back at two of the biggest plays you may have forgotten about: First, John O’Korn’s trip on second-and-one, which ultimately led to a Michigan turnover on downs (23:20), and the third-and-one handoff to Mike Weber late in the game that was stopped for a loss of three, leading to Sean Nuerenberger’s missed field goal (26:10). Safe to say that if UM would have won, we’d be talking about that play a bit more this week.

To close out the show, we discussed Ohio State’s resiliency (28:50), having a mental edge over Michigan (31:30), and previewed the Big Ten Championship versus Wisconsin (38:05).

What a weekend! A sixth-straight win over TTUN, Barrett and ‘Cameraman-gate,’ and Schiano and Tennessee.

Well, that was quite a weekend for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

On Saturday, the Buckeyes defeated the Michigan Wolverines for the sixth straight year, even though their four-year starting quarterback J.T. Barrett was mysteriously injured by a cameraman on the sideline before the game, and was replaced in the third quarter by Dwayne Haskins.

Then on Sunday, reports started circulating that OSU defensive coordinator Greg Schiano had been tapped to become the next head coach at the University of Tennessee. After an outcry from fans, alums, and boosters, the school and the coach apparently parted ways. The concern was reportedly over the fact that Schiano was a member of the Penn State defensive staff under Jerry Sandusky. Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel, who covered the Sandusky child sexual abuse case as closely as anyone, said that the accusations against Schiano were “old, random, nonspecific, (disputed) hearsay.”

It was under these clouds of confusion, conspiracy, and intrigue that Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer took to the podium for his weekly Monday press conference to discuss the victory over TTUN, this Saturday’s Big Ten Championship, and the J.T. Barrett injury.

Michigan Recap

  • Offensive Player of the Game: Isaiah Prince, Marcus Baugh
  • Offensive Champions: J.T. Barrett, Dwayne Haskins, K.J. Hill, Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon, Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan, Billy Price
  • Defensive Player of the Game: Sam Hubbard, Denzel Ward
  • Defensive Champions: Nick Bosa, Jalyn Holmes, Tyquan Lewis, Dre’Mont Jones, Jerome Baker, Chris Worley, Tuf Borland, Kendall Sheffield, Damon Webb, Jordan Fuller
  • Special Teams Player of the Game: Erick Smith
  • Special Teams Champions: Jeffrey Okugah, Justin Hilliard, Zach Turnure
  • Meyer said that seeing Dwayne Haskins perform so well against an “elite defense” in a hostile environment gives the coaches comfort.
  • He also noted that the other players are happy for Haskins’ success. When it was announced that Haskins was graded a Champion, Meyer said that he saw confidence in the eyes of his teammates.
  • Meyer said that if Barrett doesn’t look healthy at any point, he would be confident in going to Haskins if need be.
  • He added that on defense, Sam Hubbard “only knows one speed,” and that he is one of Meyer’s “favorite players ever.”
  • He said that he has huge respect for Michigan’s defensive lineman Maurice Hurst, and that he is ready for him to go to the NFL.
  • Meyer said that he is not involved in any investigations about what happened to Barrett on the sideline, but that it will be handled by the administrations, and that he trusts them.
Wisconsin, Big Ten Championship Preview

  • The head coach said that this is a “somewhat mature team,” so he is optimistic that they can get refocused for a big game this Saturday after the emotional victory over Michigan.
  • Meyer said that he has great respect for Wisconsin’s program from the AD position on down.
  • He added that his team is energized because of where they are at in the season.
  • Meyer said that playing in what might be the best division in college football, it can toughen you up, but it also can be draining as well.
  • He said that Wisconsin is “giant up front,” and that he can’t ever remember playing Wisconsin when they didn’t have elite linebackers.
J.T. Barrett’s Knee Injury

  • Meyer said that J.T. Barrett has been upgraded to “Probable,” and that treatment has been going well.
  • However, he did say that he has not yet practiced this week at all.
  • The head coach said that Barrett has had his knee worked on all year, but it hasn’t been something that he’s had to worry about before Saturday’s game.
  • Meyer said that this week of practice will determine if Barrett is healthy enough to play, and that his ability to run will be a factor in determining if he starts or not.
  • He added that Barrett won’t get the full compliment of practice reps, and that Haskins will split time with the first team.
Greg Schiano Situation

  • Meyer said that he wasn’t angry about the Schiano situation, but that Greg Schiano is an elite person, elite coach, elite husband, and that he stands by his coach.
  • He said that he was disappointed for Schiano as a friend, and that perhaps it wasn’t a perfect fit, and that they are happy to have him in Columbus.
Miscellaneous

  • When asked about Chip Kelly returning to college football, Meyer said that he is happy that his friend is back in the coaching ranks, but that he hasn’t spoken to him.
  • He said that it is a good thing that other people want to interview OSU’s assistant coaches, but that the interview process is draining.
  • If any of the assistant coaches are pursued for positions at other schools, that won’t happen until after the B1G Championship this weekend, but they will address that afterward.
  • Meyer said that while he doesn’t want to start a precedent, since Hubbard is a three-year starter and has graduated from Ohio State, he was able to participate in Senior Tackle before the Illinois game. However, he added that he didn’t want to speak for Hubbard as to whether he will be going to the NFL, but Meyer jokingly added that he would welcome him back with open arms.

The East Division champion Ohio State Buckeyes will take on the West Division champion Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten Championship on Saturday at 8:17 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on FOX from Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium.
