LGHL J.T. Barrett and Tim Tebow were always trusted to get a first down in critical situations

And they had similar success rates, too.

Earlier, I compared how often J.T. Barrett ran the ball in short-yardage situations with other running quarterbacks, finding that he likely had the most short-yardage runs of any quarterback in the country in 2017, the second-highest percentage of his team’s short-yardage carries, and the second-highest success rate on those runs, too.

I decided to also take a look at how that compared with other Ohio State running backs in 2017, 2016, and in 2014, as well as how Barrett compared with Tim Tebow, who was known even more for his fullback-like carries in short-yardage situations.

Barrett over time

The main takeaway here: J.T. Barrett has gotten more and more carries in short-yardage situations throughout his career, and has only gotten more efficient at getting first downs. For three seasons, J.T. has converted over two-thirds of his short-yardage runs, and he converted an astounding three-quarters of his attempts this season.

That’s about as automatic as you could hope for.

2017 Season Comparison

Compared with Dobbins and Weber this season, Barrett had as many attempts as the two running backs combined, and actually had the same number of first downs as the two combined as well.

This mostly says that the offensive line was pretty incredible in short-yardage situations this year, but it also suggests that the Buckeyes might be alright if one of those two running backs has to shoulder the short-yardage load next season instead of whoever winds up starting at quarterback.

2016 Season Comparison

Last year Mike Weber had nearly as many short-yardage attempts as Barrett, but was even more efficient. Curtis Samuel only had six short-yardage runs, but converted all six of them.

Barrett vs. Tebow

I can’t imagine any quarterback — outside of maybe one of Dan Mullen’s quarterbacks — will ever have as high of a percentage of his team’s short-yardage conversion attempts as Tim Tebow did during his final seasons at Florida. He had over 54% of his team’s attempts both years, still getting the first down on over 72% of those carries!

When Barrett lined up in an empty set on third-and-short in 2017, everyone in the stadium knew what was coming. That was even more so for Tebow. But, Barrett did have the edge in conversion percentage in 2017 — converting an incredible 77.8% of his runs compared to Tebow’s best of 76.5%.

Always building for the future, Ohio State offered elite 2019 WR DeMarcco Hellams and 4-star QB Max Duggan.

Entering the second week following the completion of the regular season, the Ohio State football coaches are using their extra time away from the field to enhance recruiting efforts.

This year’s recruiting cycle is quickly coming to end as recruits will now be able to commit to their school of choice earlier than ever before. As part of the NCAA’s new early signing period, high school seniors will be able to sign their letters of intent beginning Dec. 20 lasting through Dec. 22. They can also choose to sign during the signing period starting the first Wednesday in February.

Currently, the Buckeyes hold 19 verbal commitments in this year’s class and will only have room to add a few more recruits. Because of this, Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football coaches are also looking at strengthening next year’s class.

Ohio State offers 2019 4-star WR

The Buckeyes have just one verbal commitment in the 2019 recruiting cycle in four-star OT Doug Nester, but not to fret, the coaches are actively building relationships with potential prospects.

They did just that Monday when the school offered four-star WR DeMarcco Hellams (Hyattsville, MD/DeMatha Catholic.)

Blessed to have received my 24th offer, from THE Ohio State University‼️ #B1G #HowSheGonEat #SilverBullets #GodsPlan #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/FvrF71Ymg7

— DeMarcco Hellams2️⃣ (@DHellams2) December 11, 2017

Hellams just capped off his junior season of high school football and has already built an impressive offer list. While the Buckeyes are getting in early in Hellams’ recruiting process, the blue-chip WR already holds 21 offers from programs like Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame.

Penn State is the early front-runner to land Hellams as he has made his way to Happy Valley three times already and has not visited any other program yet. However, that will surely change as he enters his senior season.

The Buckeyes only hold one verbal offer from a WR in this year’s class in four-star WR L’Christian “Blue” Smith, but they are the favorite to land fellow four-star Kamryn Babb. However, as Smith projects as more of an H-back than a true WR, look for the Buckeyes to make receiver a position of high importance in next year’s class.

Hellams is viewed as the No. 18 WR in the 2019 recruiting cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, as well as the No. 2 player from the state of Maryland and is the No. 110 overall player regardless of position.

Have the Buckeyes found their QB of the future?

Continuing to focus on next year’s recruiting class, the Ohio State coaching staff sent a scholarship offer to dual-threat QB Max Duggan (Council Bluffs, IA/Lewis Center.)

Excited and grateful to receive an offer from The Ohio State University! #GoBuckspic.twitter.com/eEAORylJRn

— Max Duggan (@MaxDuggan_10) December 11, 2017

It is no secret that Meyer views it as a necessity to sign at least one QB per recruiting cycle. He understands the importance of the position and offers only those that he believes have the potential to lead his team on the field. Therefore, when Ohio State offers a QB, you know Meyer has done his homework.

Duggan is a four-star prospect and viewed as the No. 9 dual-threat QB in the 247Sports Composite Rankings as well as the No. 3 recruit from the Hawkeye state and the No. 301 player in the entire class.

However, do not let the low overall ranking fool you: Duggan can play. Not only is he quick with his feet, he is also quick with his release. He has solid arm strength that will only improve at the next level, and above-average accuracy.

More important may be his ability to lead on the field. While he missed five games for Lewis Central during his junior season due to a broken right thumb, he still led the team to a 9-2 record. Even more impressive was his stat line of 47-of-81 for 720 yards and eight touchdowns to one interception as well as rushing for 513 yards and nine touchdowns on 83 carries.

In relation to the 2019 recruiting cycle timeline, Ohio State is getting involved in Duggan’s recruitment early on. However, he has already acquired 15 scholarship offers from programs like Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State, Georgia, Ole Miss, Iowa State, North Carolina, and UCF. He also visited Alabama this past summer but has yet to receive an offer.

Look for Ohio State to continue building a relationship with Duggan over the coming year as well as hopefully getting him on campus on multiple occasions.

Quick Hit:

  • Ohio State five-star TE verbal commit Jeremy Ruckert was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of New York.

A 4-star commit from the 2016 class, Hawkins was redshirted in the Buckeyes’ 2016 campaign.

In the 2016 recruiting cycle, Kierre Hawkins was the first of three tight ends to commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Now, that class has two TEs remaining, as Hawkins will transfer to Youngstown State.

Ryan Donnelly of Rivals.com posted on Twitter of Hawkins’ transfer. Hawkins made the announcement of his move to the Penguins’ program with an Instagram post.

Hawkins was redshirted in the 2016 season, and entered the 2017 campaign as a second-year freshman.

Recruited out of Maple Heights, Ohio, Hawkins was the 12th best prospect in the state for the 2014 recruiting class and the 13th best tight end in the country, according to 247sports.

We wish Hawkins the best as he continues his collegiate days with Bo Pelini and the YSU program.

Denzel Ward headlines a Buckeye draft class that has several potential first-round picks.

“The Raiders may have used their first two picks on defensive backs last year, but they still need help in the back half.”

-Dan Kadar, SB Nation

Under Urban Meyer, Ohio State has turned into a powerhouse at churning out NFL-caliber players. The Buckeyes had a dozen players taken in 2016, and seven selected this past spring. This year doesn’t look to be too different, with four Ohio State players projected to go in the first round alone, according to SB Nation’s latest mock draft.

Chief among the group of prospects is cornerback Denzel Ward. This season was Ward’s first as a starter, but the junior is poised to follow in the footsteps of Marshon Lattimore, who was also selected in the first round after spending just one year as a starter. Selected as a first team All-American, Ward is one of the top defensive backs in this year’s draft along with Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick. Current projections have Ward heading to Oakland with the 14th-overall pick to join fellow Buckeye Gareon Conley in the secondary.

Next up is center Billy Price, who was also selected as a first team All-American with Ward. Price brings versatility to the offensive line, having played at both guard and center during his four years as a starter at Ohio State. He could go to join Taylor Decker, his teammate on the offensive line on the 2014 national championship squad, in Detroit with the 17th-overall pick.

Later in the first round, at the No. 27 spot, the Titans are projected to choose defensive end Sam Hubbard. While Hubbard has been playing somewhat in the shadow of Nick Bosa, who has absolutely dominated this season, the junior from Cincinnati is still a first-round talent. He is extremely versatile, having played at safety in high school, and could transition from the defensive line to linebacker with ease.

Finally, Jerome Baker has been the most consistent talent at linebacker this season for the Buckeyes, and could make a solid selection for Pittsburgh late in the first round, especially given Ryan Shazier’s uncertain future on the football field.

“It’s Brady’s position to lose at this point. The kid’s been in the program for four or five years now. He’s continued to get better. Him and I are having those one-on-one conversations. Let’s work on this. Let’s change this.”

-Ohio State center Billy Price, via David Jablonski, Dayton Daily News

The Ohio State Buckeyes will experience a massive loss after this season--quite literally. More than 600 pounds of offensive linemen will likely be headed to the NFL in center Billy Price and left tackle Jamarco Jones. Price is set to start his program-record 55th-straight game against USC in the Cotton Bowl, having started from his first game as a redshirt freshman in 2014. Jones, a true senior, has been a two-year starter on the line, and was a leader for the unit heading into the season. Now, as the pair prepares for their final game in scarlet and gray, these two seasoned veterans are looking to what the future holds for the Ohio State offensive line.

Price moved over from guard before this season, taking over for Rimington Trophy-winner Pat Elflein at the center spot. Price proved worthy of his new post, winning the Rimington Trophy himself last week as the top center in the country. Whoever comes in at center next season has a lot to live up to, but Price has confidence in Brady Taylor, his heir apparent. Taylor will be a fifth-year senior heading into next season, and has backed up Price all year with limited playing time. As the Buckeyes prepare for the Cotton Bowl later this month, Taylor has been seeing the lion’s share of snaps in practice as the line prepares for next season without Price.

Replacing Jones presents another challenge. Right tackle Isaiah Prince has taken limited snaps from the spot throughout the season and, as a two year starter, brings significant experience to the post even in a new role. Michael Jordan, who has started all season at left guard, will be another leader on the line heading into next season. Finally, Brandon Bowen, who played at right guard before experiencing a season-ending injury against Maryland, will return with half a season of snaps under his belt.

“We’ve got faith in each other, and we just push each other day by day to keep going. Next season I plan on having a great year. My number one goal is just to stay healthy and do what I do.”

-Ohio State H-back Demario McCall, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

Running back J.K. Dobbins stole the show on offense this season for Ohio State, following in Mike Weber’s footsteps as a 1,000 yard rusher as a freshman. Mike Weber, while coming back from injury to share snaps with Dobbins, still managed more than 600 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. J.T. Barrett also finally had a dynamic group of receivers who caught a collective 39 touchdowns on the season. And Barrett himself finished the season, once again, as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation and a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award.

However, as explosive as the offensive fireworks were this season, they lacked, for the most part, H-back Demario McCall. Prior to the season, McCall was projected to play a much larger role on the offense, but a groin injury wound up keeping him sidelined for much of the season, including the Buckeyes’ final seven games. With inconsistent pain, McCall’s status was determined on a week-by-week basis, but meant that he hasn’t seen the field since Ohio State routed Maryland in October.

Last season, McCall rushed for 270 yards on 49 carries while finding the endzone four times. He took a step back this season, gaining just 111 yards on the ground and rushing for one touchdown. Given the depth at the running back spot this season, Meyer opted to move McCall to more of a hybrid role, which he worked on with the scout team while he was sidelined much of this year.

Ohio State is seeking a medical redshirt for McCall, who was a true sophomore heading into this season. If successful, McCall will have three years of eligibility remaining when he returns in 2018. McCall is widely recognized on the team for his positive attitude, and credits his support system--namely his teammates and father--for helping him through this season.

Who wins the '18 Playoff?

You know, my father once taught a class with Brian Bosworth when he was at OU in the 1980s. He said Bosworth was the rudest smartmouth punk he ever came across. OU's had their fair share of knuckleheads dating back to when Bud Wilkinson was the coach in the 50s and 60s. I understand Baker Mayfield has some growing up to do, but he is nowhere near the asshole-level of Bosworth nor is he even the knucklehead that Stanley Wilson was.

IMO, Mayfield's just one of those guys who needs to have enemies to get his juices going: And if he doesn't have any real ones, he'll find ways to invent them in his mind or do something dickish to make them. Those kind of people are annoying as fuck, but he doesn't really go beyond that for me. Bosworth was just a grade A troll before before people knew what trolls were: My favorite Bosworth story is from when he was with the Seahawks in the old AFC West and Broncos fans were buying up "Brian Bozo" t-shirts, which, as it turns out, "Bozo" was producing for profit.

I can't help you with Stanley Wilson, Charles Thompson . . .

As their college careers come to an end, several Buckeyes will take the first step toward a professional football career by way of the Senior Bowl.

Back in November, it was announced that the first round of invitations for the 2018 Reese’s Senior Bowl had been sent and that there were nine Ohio State players named to the game’s Watch List. The annual event has proven to be one of the first, and most important, on a long road to the NFL Draft, with the Senior Bowl providing prospects a chance to work out with and in front of NFL scouts.

Of the nine OSU players expected to get an invite, the first Buckeye to accept was defensive end Jalyn Holmes. You can put money on the fact that NFL scouts have to be drooling over another opportunity to get a DE out of Ohio State, especially with the production of players like Joey Bosa at the next level.

It shouldn’t be long before the list of Buckeyes participating in the annual event continues to grow, with Ohio State expected to send another impressive delegation to the NFL this season.

The Buckeyes we’re still waiting to hear from, include: J.T. Barrett, Marcus Baugh, Michael Hill, Jamarco Jones, Tyquan Lewis, Billy Price, Damon Webb and Chris Worley.

The 2018 Reese’s Senior Bowl is Jan. 27, 2018 at 2:30 pm ET, and will be played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.

This marks the 5th year in a row that a Buckeye has earned the first-team honor.

Get out the shovels, it’s time to plant some new buckeye trees, as today, it was announced that Ohio State Buckeyes Billy Price and Denzel Ward were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press. The honor was the second in as many years for Price. He was recognized for his play at guard last year before moving over to play center for 2017. This is Ward’s first All-America honor, in his first season as a starter. Sophomore defensive end Nick Bosa was named to the AP’s second-team.

In addition to earning All-American status for the second-straight year, Price also won the Rimington Trophy and the Big Ten’s Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year award this postseason.

Earlier this month, Price set the school record for consecutive starts in a career, a total that currently sits at 54. Price will also tie the man he replaced at center, Pat Elflein, for the most games played by a Buckeye in the Cotton Bowl.

After being named to the All-Big Ten’s first-team, Denzel Ward picks up his first AP All-American honor. Though not the biggest physically, Ward uses his exceptional length and speed to shut down his quarter of the field. His 15 pass breakups and 17 defended passes are both good for third in the Big Ten, despite the fact that he was often out of the game by mid-third quarter due to OSU’s large leads. In addition to his stellar pass-defending stats, he also has recorded 37 total tackles, and hauled in two interceptions.

The pair of newly minted All-Americans makes a total of nine in the past five years for Ohio State, joining Ryan Shazier, Joey Bosa, Taylor Decker, Vonn Bell, Elflein, Malik Hooker, and Curtis Samuel.

Following in the foot steps of his big brother, Nick Bosa recorded 14.5 tackles for loss in his sophomore season, good for fourth best in the league; a ranking that his seven sacks match.

The junior forward notched a career high over the weekend.

On Monday, the Big Ten Conference announced that Ohio State redshirt junior forward Keita Bates-Diop had been named the league’s men’s basketball Player of the Week. Over the past seven day, Bates-Diop led the Buckeyes to two victories, first overcoming a 20-point deficit to beat conference foe the Michigan Wolverines, 71-62, and then in a non-conference battle against the William & Mary Tribe, 97-62.

Against TTUN, Bates-Diop led all scorers with 18 while also recording nine rebounds. Against the Tribe, he was also the game’s top-scorer, this time notching 27 to go with five boards. The point total served as his career high.

The Ohio State Buckeyes (8-3, 2-0) currently sit at the top of the Big Ten standings after just two games, along with Michigan State and Purdue. They will return to the floor on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. ET against the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network from the Value City Arena in Columbus.

usa_today_10258894.0.jpg

For an unprecedented three consecutive Rose Bowls, USC and Ohio State tussled with national championship implications on the line.

The Rose Bowl is the granddaddy of them all — and two of its favorite grandkids will renew their acquaintance in the Cotton Bowl.

Ohio State and USC have met 23 times. Seven of those match ups have been in the Rose Bowl. Those games, spread over four different decades, helped define these two storied programs. Often, national championship implications were on the line. And for an unprecedented three consecutive years in the 1970s, the Trojans and Buckeyes clashed in Pasadena — a feat that has never happened before, nor since, in 104 Rose Bowl games.

Let’s look back on the three-year war for the roses between the Trojans and the Buckeyes, and the moments that defined the games:

1973: USC 42, Ohio State 17 — What does greatness look like? It was on display on both sides of the field in the 1973 Rose Bowl. The USC team that lined up was not only the best of the bunch that season, but one of the greatest teams in college football history. Behind a touchdown from USC wide receiver Lynn Swann, and four second-half scores by running back Sam Cunningham, the Trojans rolled to victory before an all-time Rose Bowl record crowd of 106,869.

The game would mark the first of four consecutive Rose Bowls for the Buckeyes, and a then-freshman running back from Eastmoor High School, Archie Griffin. Ohio State would finish the season with a 9-2 mark. With a perfect 12-0 record, the Trojans became the first team to receive every No. 1 vote on every coach and media poll ballot. Keith Jackson would call that Trojans squad the greatest team he ever saw.

Washington State coach Jim Sweeney, whose Cougars were pounded by the Trojans 44-3, would say of the team, “USC’s not the No. 1 team in the country. The Miami Dolphins are better.”

1974: Ohio State 42, USC 21 — Before Round 2 against USC in the Rose Bowl, the Buckeyes squared off in one of the most controversial Michigan games of all time. An undefeated No. 1 ranked OSU, played to a 10-10 tie of undefeated No. 4 ranked Michigan in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines failed to convert on two late game-winning field goal attempts, leaving the Rose Bowl birth to be decided off the field by a vote by conference Athletic Directors. Much to the protest of Bo Schembechler, the Buckeyes would win the secret ballot 6-4 and head to Pasadena.

In the rematch against USC, Buckeye running back Pete Johnson would score three times, and Archie Griffin would add another as OSU pulled away in the second half for the victory. With a 10-0-1 record, the Buckeyes finished the season at No. 2 in the country — behind Notre Dame — in the AP Poll.

1975: USC 18, Ohio State 17 — The rubber match of the three-consecutive Rose Bowls featured a 10-1 No. 3 ranked Ohio State versus a 9-1-1 No. 5 ranked USC squad. The game was a nail-biter. With 2:03 remaining USC trailed by 7 and USC quarterback Pat Haden hit Johnny McKay, son of Trojan coach John McKay, for a 38-yard touchdown. Now trailing 17-16, the Trojans opted to go for two. Hayden found wide receiver Shelton Diggs on the two point conversion to give USC a 18-17 lead. On the next drive OSU kicker Tom Skladany launched a 62 yard field goal. It fell short.

The victory would catapult the Trojans to a No. 1 ranking in the UPI and Coaches Poll, splitting the national championship with the AP Poll’s top team — Oklahoma. It would also mark the start of a run of seven consecutive victories for the Trojans against the Buckeyes. That streak has continued — and will be tested again in this year’s Cotton Bowl.
