Ohio State will look to stay undefeated in the Big Ten, but they’ll face their toughest test of the season later today when they host Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans at Value City Arena.

There has been many surprises around college basketball so far this season, but many weren’t expecting Ohio State to get off to such a strong start in Big Ten play. After defeating Wisconsin and Michigan in early December, Ohio State stepped back into conference play on Thursday night and defeated Iowa 92-81 in Iowa City.

Keita Bates-Diop led the way for Ohio State with 27 points, which tied his season-high, while the other four Buckeye starters reached double figures in the victory over the Hawkeyes. Ohio State jumped out to a 46-32 halftime lead, and Iowa wasn’t able to mount much of a challenge in the second half, improving the Buckeyes record to 10-2 when they are leading at halftime.

Not only did Bates-Diop lead Ohio State in scoring on Thursday night, but he pulled down 13 rebounds for the Buckeyes, giving him his seventh double-double of the season. Ohio State has won six of the seven games this year in which Bates-Diop has recorded a double-double, with the only loss coming to Butler in the PK80 Invitational in Portland. Ohio State is 628-272 all-time when they have a Buckeye record a double-double.

The win on Thursday night allowed for Chris Holtmann to become the first Ohio State men’s basketball coach to start conference play 3-0 in his first season. Ohio State last started Big Ten play 3-0 in 2016, but weren’t able to build much on the hot start, finishing the regular season with a 11-7 conference record, which was one of the reasons the Buckeyes weren’t invited to the NCAA Tournament.

Ohio State has had trouble against Michigan State over the years, posting just a 56-68 record all-time against the Spartans. At least the Buckeyes have had a little more success against Michigan State in Columbus, with Ohio State winning 36 of the 59 meetings in Ohio’s capital city. This will mark the first time Ohio State has ever played a top ranked Michigan State team. The Buckeyes have had trouble in the past when they have played ranked Michigan State squads, as evidenced by their 9-22 record against Top 25 Michigan State teams.

Michigan State lost their second game of the year to Duke in the Champions Classic in Chicago, but the Spartans have been flawless since then, winning 14 games in a row, with each of those wins coming by double digits. Last time out, the Spartans had little trouble with Maryland in East Lansing, beating the Terrapins 91-61. Nick Ward led the Spartans with 16 points, as four Michigan State starters reached double figures. The Spartans hit 16 three-pointers in the victory, which tied for the third-best total in school history.

The Spartans come into today’s game with five players averaging at least 10 points per game. Miles Bridges leads the way with 16.9 points per game, while Gahanna native Nick Ward is averaging 15.4 points per game. Jaren Jackson Jr. is a Michigan State player who could bother Ohio State with his size. The 6-11 freshman is averaging 6.8 rebounds per game and 3.3 blocks per game on the year, which means Ohio State will have to choose their shots carefully when going in the lane against Jackson.

Numbers to know

8-11

Ohio State is 8-11 all-time against top ranked teams. The last time Ohio State played a team sitting atop the rankings was in 2013, when the Buckeyes fell to Indiana 81-68. Ohio State’s last win against the No. 1 team in the country came in 2007, when the Buckeyes were ranked second and defeated Wisconsin, 49-48. Ohio State last won as an unranked team against the nation’s top team in 2005, defeating Illinois, 65-64, at Value City Arena.

80

Ohio State has improved on the offensive end dramatically this year. After reaching 80 points in just three games last year, the Buckeyes have scored at least 80 points in nine games this year, winning all nine of those games. The Buckeyes will need every point they can get against a Michigan State team that has scored at least 80 points in each of their last seven games.

30

After registering a season-high 35 assists in their previous game against Savannah State, Michigan State reached the 30 assist mark for the second game in a row on Thursday night against Maryland. This was the third time this season in which the Spartans have dished out at least 30 assists, with the other occurrence coming last month against Houston Baptist.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

The senior from Pickerington continued to work his way up Ohio State’s all-time scoring list by scoring 18 points on Thursday night against Iowa. Tate passed Clark Kellogg for 31st place on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list, and set his sights on Jamar Butler, who is currently 30th with 1,313 points. The forward will have his work cut out for him today with some of the talented front court players that Michigan State has.

Kam Williams

With his 13 points on Thursday against Iowa, Williams eclipsed 900 points for his Ohio State career. Three of Williams’ field goals against the Hawkeyes were three-pointers, which gives him 153 triples for his career, tying him for fifth all-time at Ohio State with Scoonie Penn and Brent Darby. Williams has now reached double-digits in five of his last six games. The Buckeyes are going to need more hot shooting from the senior if they want to keep pace with the Spartans.

Michigan State

Miles Bridges

The sophomore is currently leading Michigan State with 16.9 points per game, and is thought of by many as one of the best players in the country. The forward brings a bit of everything to the table for the Spartans, as in three games he has reached double figures in rebounds, and has dished out at least five assists in four of the last seven games. Last time out against Maryland, Bridges registered 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks. Ohio State will have their hands full trying to slow down the talented forward.

Cassius Winston

Michigan State’s floor general is the sophomore from Detroit. Not only can Winston set his teammates up for buckets, but he can fill the score sheet when needed. Winston has scored double figures in all but three games this year, with his season-high coming against UConn, where he scored 28 points against the Huskies in the PK80. Winston is averaging 7.3 helpers per game this year, and dished out a season-high 13 assists against Savannah State, where Michigan State registered 35 assists.

The Buckeyes extended their win streak to six with their second consecutive win in East Lansing

Michigan State channeled their namesake and fought to defend their arena like the Spartans at Thermopylae, but this time around, they didn’t have Themistocles to bail them out, as the invading Ohio State Buckeyes men’s hockey team defeated Michigan State, 5-3.

The No. 8 Buckeyes didn’t quite roll over the Spartans with the same ease that they did on Friday night, where the game was effectively over a minute into the second period. The Spartans did more to fight back on Saturday, but Ohio State showed why they’re ranked No. 8 and went up three before giving up a late goal to MSU.

At one point, though, Michigan State actually got the lead in this one. Mitch Lewandowski scored first, just 7:14 into the game. That’d be the only lead they’d get, however, and it wouldn’t last long.

Ohio State scored twice within 17 seconds later in the first, with goals at 13:59 and 14:16 by Matthew Weis and Dakota Joshua, respectively.

On Weis’ goal, Tanner Laczynski, of course, had the primary assist as he threw it on net from the right faceoff circle. The puck somehow found the stick of Matthew Weis in front of MSU goalie Ed Minney, who sounds an ironically named large man wrestler, and put it in.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 7, 2018

Just 17 seconds later, Joshua found a way to put it in off a deflection from a Matt Joyaux shot. Brendon Kearney somehow redirected it to Joshua and it somehow beat Minney. Pretty hard to stop that, if I do say so myself, as a former awful broomball goalie who allowed 11 goals in a playoff game. (The team, uh, didn’t invite me back this year.)

OSU outshot the Spartans 12-5 in the first and looked like they were on their way to another easy victory, before Michigan State put up their best effort and clogged the pass to a sweep.

They outshot the Buckeyes 9-6 in the second and scored the period’s only goal. Sam Saliba scored on a powerplay due to a Kevin Miller infraction for boarding at 3:34. Just 4:29 into the second and it was tied once again.

Ohio State apparently got sick of that and decided the third period wasn’t going to be one the Spartans wanted to remember.

John Wiitala scored 4:10 into the third with the teams playing 4-on-4 hockey, just seconds before the start of an MSU powerplay. Carson Gatt took a penalty to give OSU a powerplay, but Ronnie Hein took an unfortunate high sticking call 1:10 into the OSU man advantage. But then Wiitala struck.

Matt Joyaux hit Wiitala on one knee and hre one timed a shot past Minney and into the net for his sixth of the year. It was beautiful.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 7, 2018

Just under seven minutes later, Joshua would put in his second of the game, unassisted and off a a faceoff win. Then Freddy Gerard really put it away 1:52 after that with his fifth of the year off a pass from Weis out of the left corner. He hit a streaking Gerard in front of the net on a one timer. Gerard had time to wind up and a slap shot from that close isn’t going to be stopped too often.

Freddy Gerard notched goal No. 5 on the year in the third period vs. the Spartans. Weis and Laczynski had the helpers on the goal. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/gDvwIvl8Cw

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 7, 2018

Tanner Laczynski had the secondary assist on the goal, his second helper of the night, and this one was pretty much put away.

Saliba would score his second of the game for MSU 36 seconds after Gerard’s goal to narrow it to a two goal deficit once again, but that’d be as close as the Spartans would get.

Ohio State showed why they’re a top-10 team once again, pouring it on the to the tune of 13 shots in the third period and three goals. Michigan State didn’t have an answer till it was already out of hand and then never got any closer.

The Buckeyes will be put to a harder test next weekend as they travel to State College for a weekend series with No. 14 Penn State, who swept the Buckeyes in Columbus in December. OSU hasn’t lost a game since then and hope to return the favor next weekend to the Nittany Lions.

The Buckeyes won their fifth straight, dominating the Spartans.

Remember when the Ohio State football team rolled over Michigan State 48-3 in November? That’s back, but now in hockey form!

The No. 8 Buckeyes dominated Michigan State from the puck drop to the tune of a 4-1 victory on the road in East Lansing, Mich.. The Buckeyes are undefeated since their holiday break ended, as they’ve swept No. 10 Minnesota and Niagara back to back and have the chance to sweep a third straight series on Saturday at MSU.

Sasha Larocque got this one started within the first minute and gave OSU a lead at just 33 seconds—they’d never relinquish. Freddy Gerard and Tanner Laczynski had the assists on Larocque’s first of the year. He took an errant pass of the skate of Gerard and shot it off balance from the point, through a screen, and suddenly OSU was up.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 6, 2018

Just over five minutes later, Ohio State was back at it again. John Wiitala somehow got a puck out to the front of the net on the powerplay to an all alone Kevin Miller, who put it in for his second of the year. Watch this and see if you’re any less surprised than the announcer that the puck somehow found its way to Miller all alone in front, with no Spartan in the same zip code.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 6, 2018

Ohio State outshot the Spartans 13-5 in the first period, attacking the enemy from the initial puck drop. This is what the superior team is supposed to do. They took over this game from the jump. And things would get even worse in the second for MSU.

Once again, Ohio State took off from the initial puck drop of the period in the second. Just 15 seconds in, the Buckeyes struck again. Tanner Laczynski took a pass from Matthew Weis and walked untouched to the middle of the right faceoff circle, where his initial shot didn’t find its way in, but did find Ronnie Hein’s stick on the rebound. He stashed it home for his first of the year and suddenly it was 3-0 just seconds after the period started.

Ronnie Hein scored his first goal of the season on the power play 15 seconds into the second. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/25F2lGnpVz

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 6, 2018

Laczynski wasn’t done, however, and wanted one of his own.

He’d get it 17 seconds later.

Tanner stole an errant Spartan defensive zone pass and fired it home for his 10th of the year and suddenly is was 4-0. Ohio State scored twice within the first 32 seconds of the second period. This team is good this year, folks.

Tanner Laczynski's 10th goal of the season (in the second period) was unassisted. Steals the puck down low and SCORES! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/2dA0Fz26bl

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 6, 2018

The game was effectively over at that point, and like the football team versus USC in the Cotton Bowl, sat on it after going up big early. Shots would be 10-10 for the rest of the second, with no scoring, and 7-5 MSU in the third, with Brennan Sanford ending Sean Romeo’s chance at a shutout with 9:50 left in the third.

Romeo stopped 21/22 shots and once again improved on his season save percentage of .928 with a .955 mark tonight. He’s gone beyond exceeding the team’s wildest dreams this year. They found a transfer who’s come in and put up a .928 save percentage in an offensive league. Oh, and Tommy Nappier has a .928 save percentage backing Romeo up after last weekend’s solid effort against Niagara. Not bad!

Laczynski was the unquestioned star of this game, though. He had a goal and two assists, raising his season point total to 28 in 21 games. At this rate, one would have to imagine the Flyers, who drafted him in 2016, will want him to turn pro after this season or next with these kinds of numbers. If he can avoid injury and not slow down like he did in last season’s second half, he could be OSU’s best all around player since Ryan Dzingel in 2013-14.

Anyway, the 13-4-4 Buckeyes will look to extend their winning streak to six on Saturday night at Michigan State at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Plus, there is LOTS of Buckeye news today out of the NFL.

“The Spartans resume Big Ten play by hosting No. 8 Ohio State on Friday and Saturday at Munn Ice Arena ... MSU has 14 games remaining on the schedule, all of which are against conference opponents.”

- Michigan State Spartans

The Ohio State men’s basketball team will be facing a No. 1 ranked Michigan State team on the court on Sunday, but in the days leading up to the competition, the Buckeye men’s hockey team will try their hand at besting the Spartans on the ice.

The Buckeyes have been climbing up the rankings, as they’ve turned out to be much better this season than expected. The Spartans haven’t quite bounced back as strongly in 2017, but they do feature some of the best young talent in the country — setting them up for seasons to come — including Mitchell Lewandowski, Taro Hirose, and Patrick Khodorenko. Of the three, Lewandowski is a freshman, and the other two are sophomores.

Lewandowski leads all freshman nationally in points (23), goals (10) — good for third in the entire Big Ten conference —, and game-winning goals (3). Just behind him, second-year player Hirose ranks No. 5 in the conference in points (24), and also claimed No. 3 (Big Ten) and No. 4 (nationally) in assists, with 17.

Likewise, Khoderenko is on a three-game scoring streak, ranking second on the team with nine goals (a career high), good for No. 5 in the Big Ten and No. 3 among the Spartans.

It’ll be tough back-to-back matches between a conference opponent which Buckeye fans are all too familiar.

“It went fine. We talked,” Gettleman said, via Steve Serby of the New York Post. “He was very attentive. He was focused. He couldn’t be at Monday’s team meeting, so I went through the points that I made to the team with him. … Time will tell. I told him he’s got a clean slate for me. Let’s move forward, let’s see what happens.”

It has been a tough season (and year) for second-year NFL cornerback Eli Apple. Part of the historic 2016 draft class out of Ohio State, Apple had a decent rookie season before being almost a weekly feature among the drama-filled headlines coming out of the New York Giants organization throughout 2017.

From firing their head coach, to sitting one of the league’s most tenured QBs, the Giants have been a mess this year — as evidenced by their 3-13 record. Making matters worse, Apple was among a position group that seemingly had the most drama of anyone on the drama-filled team. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was suspended after fighting with head coach Ben McAdoo, Janoris Jenkins was suspended for violating team rules, and Apple was likewise suspended for Week 17 for conduct detrimental to the team.

It’s not like the Giants have been the pillar of stability this year, but still, Apple’s off-field issues have probably seeped into his practice and work habits a bit, which would manifest (in a bad way) on Sundays. His Mom underwent a divorce and brain surgery in a year for Eli Apple that was filled with distractions on and off the field.

Now that the Giants have started making personnel changes to the coaching staff, the team also hired on a new General Manager, Dave Gettleman — former GM for the Carolina Panthers. Gettleman addressed the team earlier in the week to introduce himself and explain what kind of organization he was trying to rebuild. Despite Apple not being able to attend the team meeting, Gettleman still was able to get some face time with the former Buckeye, and has decided to give Apple a clean slate in which to build on in the offseason.

As of now — despite a lot of speculation -- it appears that Eli Apple will still be with the New York Giants for the 2018 season.

“Shazier now has feeling in his legs again, according to his father as reported WPXI on Jan. 4, 2018. His father added that Shazier was making progress in his recovery, but would not offer an answer when asked if the Steelers linebacker was walking yet.”

A serious shadow was cast over the 2017 NFL season in Week 13, when Ryan Shazier suffered a terrible back injury early in the Bengals-Steelers rivalry game. Shazier immediately began pointing to his back as he attempted to roll over without use of his legs. Since he was carted off the field that day, there have been few updates — but the latest from his Dad is certainly encouraging.

From teammates and coaches, friends and family, everyone has understandably been closed-lipped about whether or not Shazier had feeling in his legs or was able to move them. He underwent spine stabilization surgery in the days following the injury, and has since been seen in a suite for several of the Steelers home games to close out the season.

We still might not know his exact diagnosis and prognosis, but any news is good news at this point and as long as he keeps smiling as big as he has been from the suite, he seems to be heading in the right direction.
