J.K. Dobbins led the new Buckeyes, bursting onto the scene setting the Ohio State freshman rushing record.

“The final verdict is still at least a couple years away, and the sample size for Ohio State’s touted 2017 recruiting class is small. But it’s never too early for a progress report, particularly after so many newcomers made splashy debuts with the Buckeyes and appear to be well on the way to becoming stars in the Big Ten.”

Austin Ward, Land of 10

There is no question that running back J.K. Dobbins has been the star of Ohio State’s 2017 recruiting class so far, but he hasn’t been the only new Buckeye to impress this year. Dobbins got the call to start early on, as running back Mike Weber started the season dealing with a hamstring injury. The Texas product didn’t take long to make some waves, rushing for 181 yards in a win over Indiana. Dobbins went on to become the fourth Ohio State freshman to rush for 1,000 yards, breaking Maurice Clarett’s school record for most rushing yards by a freshman.

He didn’t get a ton of action during the season, but defensive end Chase Young was able to find some reps amongst a talented Ohio State defensive line. With players like Sam Hubbard, Nick Bosa, and Tyquan Lewis already lining up at defensive end, it would have been easy to redshirt Young this year. Instead, Young finished the year with 2.5 sacks, and saw time during high pressure situations for the Buckeyes, especially during the Michigan game. With a number of defensive linemen leaving after this year, the future is bright for Young.

Cornerback Kendall Sheffield saw a little more playing time than some of his teammates in the secondary who came to Ohio State at the same time, primarily because Sheffield already had some playing experience after coming to Ohio State as a transfer. If Sheffield remains in Columbus for another year, he could team with Jeffrey Okudah in the secondary, who made a name for himself with strong play on special teams in 2017.

The biggest question mark of the 2017 recruiting class is going to be quarterback Tate Martell. After being thrust into action following an injury to J.T. Barrett against Michigan, Dwayne Haskins looks to have a firm grasp on the starting quarterback position next year. That doesn’t mean Haskins won’t see some competition, especially from Martell. Even if Martell isn’t able to win the starting job, Ohio State will likely try to find a way to utilize his athletic ability on offense.

“We’re continually figuring out his system, how he wants us to run on offense in transition and half court. That prepares guys to be better prepared to shoot. You know where the ball’s going to come from, you know how to find the seams in the zone.”

Ohio State guard Kam Williams on Chris Holtmann’s offense via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Despite positing a 5-3 record through the first eight games of the season, Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann had a simple message for his players. Take better shots. Mainly Holtmann was talking about the type of three-pointers Ohio State was taking during the first eight games of the season that left a lot to be desired.

Ohio State started the season shooting 32.7% from behind the arc in their first eight games of the season. Since Holtmann asked his players to take better shots, Ohio State has been considerably better from long range, making 23 of 48 three-pointers over the next three games. On Saturday against William & Mary, Ohio State hit a season-high 11 three-pointers against the Tribe.

One big thing to remember when looking at Ohio State basketball so far this season, is the Buckeyes are just 11 games into Holtmann’s tenure, and to respond so positively early on is impressive. Many thought that the first year under the former Butler coach would be rough, especially with the lack of depth and experience for the Buckeyes, but so far Ohio State has found plenty of success early on. While expectations still shouldn’t get too out of hand, the Buckeyes are improving tremendously as they adjust to Holtmann’s style of play.

“I think if he consistently improves in those areas like he has, I think the sky is the limit. I certainly think he can be one of the best players in our league for sure. He’s got to do it consistently; he’s got to do it on both ends and he’s got to do it in all facets of the game.”

Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann on Keita Bates-Diop via Patrick Murphy, Bucknuts

There is no question who Ohio State basketball’s most valuable player has been so far this year. After missing most of last year due to injury, forward Keita Bates-Diop is making up for some lost time with his performance. The junior is leading Ohio State with 18.3 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game so far this year.

All of Bates-Diop’s time on the floor hasn’t been perfect though. While Bates-Diop is leading Ohio State with 32.8 minutes per game, head coach Chris Holtmann has seen some times where he feels Bates-Diop was underperforming, most notably early on against William & Mary on Saturday. Holtmann brought Bates-Diop to the bench to re-focus, and the junior did just that, finishing with a career-high 27 points in the victory.

With the lack of depth and experience that the Ohio State basketball team has, Holtmann can’t afford to have any lapses on the court from Bates-Diop. Not only does Holtmann rely on the junior forward to be the most productive, but he also needs Bates-Diop to set an example for what the coach expects from his players on the court not only for this year, but going forward. So far, Bates-Diop has been up to the task, but Ohio State is going to need even more from him as they will been venturing back into conference play after the New Year.

Signs are pointing to yes.

Tuesday was a big day for the Ohio State Buckeyes. First they got a commit from four-star wideout Kamryn Babb. Then, they got another verbal commitment in four-star defensive tackle Tommy Togiai.

What are the odds that Urban Meyer’s crew can keep up the hot streak on the recruiting trail?

Well, according to the latest predictions from the 247sports Crystal Ball, another ‘Boom’ could be on the way. And this time, it may be in the defensive end position.

It’s a little less cloudy...

Four-star weak-side defensive end Tyreke Smith (Cleveland, OH / Cleveland Heights) is someone the Buckeyes have been locked-in on for quite some time. There’s only one problem though: Penn State is also locked-in on the Buckeye State product, too.

Close to 40 programs have made him an offer, including the likes of Alabama and Oregon. However, it’s being viewed as a Buckeye-Nittany Lion race for the third best player in Ohio.

On Wednesday night, a duo of predictions came in for Smith on 247sports’ Crystal Ball. (The Crystal Ball is a collection of predictions from recruiting experts). This is good news for OSU fans—as well as the program—as both predictions pointed to the Buckeyes being the ones that land Smith. Those predictions counter two predictions that went Penn State’s way on Dec. 11. Those PSU predictions make sense, as Smith took an official visit to Penn State on Dec. 8.

The recent predictions look good for the Scarlet and Gray. Now, can they seal the deal and get another top-100 player (Smith ranks 59th) in the 2018 class to commit?

If so, it’ll make Director of Player Personnel Mark Pantoni happy. This is what he tweeted on Tuesday night:

Now just need some DEs in this class.... ‍♂️

— Mark Pantoni (@markpantoni) December 13, 2017
...and while we’re talking about the Crystal Ball

Another Buckeye target had votes casted on his Crystal Ball profile, too. This time around, it was four-star defensive tackle Tyler Friday. Friday is one of the top players from New Jersey in the 2018 recruiting class, and comes from Don Bosco Prep.

On Wednesday, a trio of predictions came in for Friday; two of them were in favor of Ohio State. They other vote was casted in favor of the Michigan Wolverines, a program that is seen as the leader for Friday. Currently, a total of 14 votes have been submitted for the Jersey native, with the Wolverines holding 11 of those votes—and the Buckeyes holding just two.

Even though the Buckeyes appear to be down in the Crystal Ball standings for Friday, having the latest picks fall their way appears to be a positive sign.

Teammates get OSU offers

As the 2018 class gets ready to enter the early signing period, that didn’t stop the Buckeyes from looking into the future.

Wide receiver Aydin Henningham (Boynton Beach, FL / Deerfield Beach) is a 2020 prospect that’s garnered attention (and offers) from the likes of Florida, Florida Atlantic and Virginia Tech. Wednesday night, he posted on Twitter of another offer—this one of a Scarlet and Gray variety.

Blessed to receive an offer from Ohio State University #Buckeyes pic.twitter.com/swbSYMGMos

— Aydin Henningham (@Underated_561) December 14, 2017

Henningham wasn’t the only one from Deerfield Beach that got an OSU offer. Running back and fellow 2020 classmate Jaylan Knighton got one, too.

Just like his offensive teammate, news of Knighton’s offer was posted on Twitter.

Blessed to receive an offer from The University Of Ohio State #Buckeyes⭕pic.twitter.com/eAj5ic35NJ

— The real Rooster‼️Ⓜ️ (@jaylan_knighton) December 14, 2017

The 5-foot-10 RB already holds 15 offers, including ones from both Iron Bowl programs, Auburn and Alabama.

Recruiting sites have neither graded Henningham nor Knighton, but the fact that they are getting offers from elite schools show that they’re the real deal.

MotS&G Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: Position Battles (Part II)

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: Position Battles (Part II)
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

The positions battles that I will be focusing on this week are WR, TE and the OL. Each side has their fair share of talent and weapons. In order to be effective, the skill positions must make plays to move the chains and keep drives alive. In the trenches, each team needs to be flawless and they must execute to establish the run. Quarterback play will also be a key to victory for either team.

Playmakers Galore

Deontay Burnett, Tyler Vaughns, Steven Mitchell Jr, and Michael Pittman Jr are all ballers at WR, and they will be tasked to battle Ohio State’s BIA, with Denzel Ward leading the secondary.

On the next level at TE, Tyler Petite leads the charge with former Buckeye targets Josh Falo and Daniel Imatorbhebhe are athletic enough to utilize the invisibility codes against the Buckeyes since they seem to have trouble keeping tabs on both the RB’s and the TE’s this season (a la Iowa).

Together, all the players mentioned above account for 3,133 yards and 25 TD’s, which is crazy considering who they have at the Quarterback position. If they get lose or open, it will be a long day for the Silver Bullets for sure.

K.J. Hill will be the key Zone 6 member as he goes up against this USC team that features another set of former targets, Iman Marshall and Porter Gustin. Hill will be the go-to receiver on third downs and Johnnie Dixon, Terry McLaurin, Binjimen Victor, Austin Mack, and Parris Campbell will be looking to make an impact as well.

At TE, Marcus Baugh will be a multipurpose threat in the passing game and the blocking game along with Rashod Berry. Baugh was a good player coming out of high school, but injuries and being underutilized during his time here has hurt his numbers, but the last two drafts we saw Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett drafted by NFL teams, so the dream is alive and well.

Collectively, they account for 2989 yards and 36 TD’s, which is surprising. Barrett won’t take that many chances, but if the play is there, they are gone! Speed kills and with most of Zone 6 being speedy and dynamic, it will be interesting. Victor, Berry, and Baugh are the big, strong threats, but sometimes being big and strong is all for naught because dropped balls have been a problem as of late.

Road Graders

Billy Price leads this year’s Offensive Line at Center in his last season at Ohio State. He moved on from Guard, but the move was seamless. Coming out of high school, Price was actually a DT for all of you who don’t follow recruiting, and with a background in wrestling, it was natural for him to thrive in the trenches.

This line is big, strong and nasty at every position, with the smallest members being Price at 6’4″, 312 lbs and next man up, Demetrious Knox, who replaced Bowen, being 6’4″, 308 lbs. The others are 6’5″ and over, which should help in the trenches. A season ago, the right side of the line was a major issue, but this season, they improved drastically. Prince and Knox will be targeted more often on blitzes than Jones and Jordan, but we will have to wait to see how they respond to the pressure.

Nico Falah leads the Trojan trench warfare effort against the Rushmen. Freshman RG Andrew Vorhees will go up against a combination of linemen that will target him because of his youth.

The average height for this line is 6’5″ with Toa Lobendahn being the shortest at 6’3″ and the tallest being Vorhees at 6’6″. The average weight is around 300 lbs, which might be enough to at least slow down the defense.

I could not find a statistic for USC in sacks allowed, but I don’t know whether that is good or bad news for the defense. I guess we will have to find out.

Position Battles

WR: This battle is production versus talent. Both teams are dead even in both categories, with slight differences in their approaches. Ohio State has less overall yardage, but more TD’s and USC has more yards, but fewer TDs. Both groups are going against good DB’s, but I will declare this a draw.

TE: Baugh and Berry versus Petite, Falo, and Imatorbhebhe. Like the WR matchup, it is a dead heat. Both teams have athleticism in the back 7 which will be another toss-up when both teams show up. Draw.

OL: This matchup, in particular, will tell you a lot. The battle in the trenches will be one to watch with all the NFL prospects participating. Price, Jones, and Prince are eligible to improve their draft stock and the same goes for all but Vorhees on USC’s side. The Buckeyes have seasoned members but will be going up against their first 3-4 defense of the season. USC will go up against a 4-3 defense that has NFL prospects at all levels. This will be the most depth and talent to date this season, and I will give the edge to Ohio State.

Bowl Season is inching closer, the 2017 College Football season regrettably is coming to an end. The last game of the season will feature two conference champions who were not voted into this seasons College Football Playoffs in favor of non-conference champion Alabama. Even though neither team isn’t a part of the big dance, it does not mean that this game will lack the drama, the intensity, and the sizzle of the teams that made it.

The BIG 10 Champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes finished their regular season at 11-2, with losses against Oklahoma at home by 15 and at Iowa, by a whopping 31 points to an above average team. The Iowa loss was the Buckeyes worst conference losses to date, that I could recall, but that was the factor that eliminated them from the conversation.

The 11-2 USC Trojans were never really in the conversation even though they were crowned as the PAC 12 Champions. They suffered both of their losses on the road, to Washington State and Notre Dame. Their losses were not as bad as Ohio State’s, losing to Washington State late, by a FG and a 35-point throttling at the hands of the Irish.

Both teams have a lot to prove, and with an abundance of NFL talent on each team, this is a must watch. Both teams were pre-season favorites to make the playoffs, but things happen as both are aiming to finish this season on a high note with a victory in Dallas.

Head-to-head, USC has won 13 out of 23 contests against Ohio State’s 9 and a single tie. USC has won 7 straight and is looking to add an 8th consecutive win at the Rose Bowl. Ohio State’s last win against the Trojans was back in 1974 under Woody Hayes.

Dynamic Duo’s

Both Ohio State and USC have a playmaker at every single level, but both teams have studs at the QB and RB positions, which will most likely attract scouts to the game.

On one side you have a surefire first round pick in Sam Darnold, a RS Sophomore and Junior Ronald Jones II competing against Fifth Year Senior, J.T. Barrett and RS Sophomore Mike Weber, with J.K. Dobbins, a talented True Freshman in the rotation.

In Darnold, you have a talented QB capable of making plays on the fly with his arm. For the season he is 277-435 and has thrown for 3787 yards, 26 TD’s against 12 INT’s, with 100 yards on the ground and 5 TD’s. He has a lot of talent around him at WR and TE that could give the Silver Bullets fits.

With Barrett, he is a dual-threat that tends to take over during crunch time. He is 229-354 for 2939 yards with 35 TD’s and 9 INT’s. He also has rushed for 732 and 10 TD’s. He holds a variety of BIG and NCAA records, but he is a long shot in this years draft to make in on an NFL roster. Barrett has weapons at WR and TE, but they aren’t as established as USC’s is, but they can flat out fly past defenders and make people miss for yards after the catch.

In the backfield, Ronald Jones is a load at running back with 1486 yards and 18 TD’s for the season. Ohio State has a two-headed monster in Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins, who combined for 1972 total yards rushing and 17 TD’s, with Dobbins becoming the the 4th Freshman at Ohio State to break the 1,000 yard mark and surpassing Weber’s mark from a season ago.

Both teams will try to impose their will against each others defenses and it will start with these two positions. Neither team can afford to start out sloppy because the game could get out of hand quickly. Turnovers will give the other team the edge.

Position Advantages

QB: Objectively, I will give the slight edge at this position to USC. Yes, Darnold is prone to turnovers, but like we saw against Washington, he is elusive in the pocket and has the awareness and accuracy and arm strength to get out of trouble. I love Barrett, but his accuracy has been an issue this season and throwing just isn’t his strength.

RB: Ronald Jones II is a beast, but the depth isn’t there. Carr is a good player, but I will give Ohio State the edge at RB. J.K. Dobbins has been a pleasant surprise this season and leads the Buckeyes in rushing, but Mike Weber has also come on as of late. Together, they make up one of the best duo’s in College Football, and they are both looking to tear up this USC defense. Jones is an all-purpose back, but so is Dobbins. The deciding factor is Weber’s ability to run north and south.

And, did Nick Bosa really deserve to be an All-American?

“The Buckeyes could own both distinctions in ’18. Their class occupies the No. 1 slot in the 247Sports Composite with 21 verbals and an average player rating of 94.87, slightly better than their nation-best finish last year.”

-Chris Johnson, SI.com

This year is the dawn of a new era in college football. No longer are players required to wait until the first Wednesday of February to officially sign their National Letters of Intent. With the increase of players graduating early and starting college in January, the NCAA has seen fit to open up a three-day, early signing period for FBS college football that kicks off on Dec. 20.

Whether it is this new-fangled window, or the traditional early February date, it’s been impossible to discuss college football recruiting without mentioning Ohio State ever since Urban Meyer got to Columbus, and in Johnson’s SI article, he breaks down what this 72-hour period will look like, and in many of the biggest stories, the Buckeyes will be a significant player.

After the Buckeyes got commitments from two highly pursued, four-star talents last night, they extended their lead in all of the recruiting rankings, but as we know from the great Stevie Wonder, nothing can be sealed and delivered until it is first signed.

So, the big story heading into next week is what will Heard County (Ga.) quarterback Emory Jones decide to do? (Jones is currently ranked as the 40th player nationally, and the fourth highest dual threat QB.) After committing to the Buckeyes in summer 2016 he has reaffirmed his position in the class multiple times, but regular trips to Alabama and Auburn have raised concerns; so much so that another QB committed to OSU just last week.

However, as WR Kamryn Babb made his intentions to play in Columbus known last night, Jones tweeted at him, “Congrats Family #ZONE6” followed by a series of OSU related emojis and a picture of the two on the field together at Ohio Stadium, but the tweet has since been removed.

While the Buckeyes now have a “back-up” quarterback in the 2018 class, there’s no doubt that losing a talent like Jones would be a significant blow to OSU’s plans.

“It’s crazy, reflecting on the seasons really shows how similar USC and OSU were this season. There were statements wins, there were disastrous losses, and there are conference titles.”

-Brendan Kearney, Conquest Chronicles

When our friends over at the USC SB Nation site Conquest Chronicles laid out the progression of the Ohio State season, it was a bit startling to relive the ups and downs of the year. As always, expectations for this Ohio State team were incredibly high to start the season, but, be it poor execution or head-scratching playcalling, another national championship run wasn’t in the cards.

However, there were a lot of great things borne out of this season that bode well for the Cotton Bowl and for the future; for example, the emergence of J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber as one of the most explosive stables of difference-making running backs in the country, the rotating talent and depth of the rushmen on the defensive front, and the potential found in Dwayne Haskins’ right arm.

While a big bowl win over a storied rival like USC is obviously something worth focusing on, it’s hard not to see the Buckeyes’ final game of 2017 as the end of one era, and the beginning of another. But, perhaps the most compelling part of the article is to compare this OSU campaign to Southern Cal’s own roller coaster ride in 2017.

Like Ohio State, the Trojans entered the season with a heralded quarterback in Sam Darnold and national title aspirations, only to have inconsistency derail their dreams. So, now that both conference champions have found themselves in a traditional Rose Bowl matchup deep in the heart of Texas, how will they stack up in a New Year’s Six Bowl that has much less on the line than what they had envisioned before the season began?

While LGHL’s Christopher Jason gave us a quick nuts and bolts intro to USC’s offense last week, taking a look at the top-line season statistics give you an indication as to why the Buckeyes opened up as nearly a touchdown favorite. While the two offenses are comparable (OSU ranks sixth nationally, while USC 15), the difference might be in how the defenses perform. On the season, OSU ranks eighth in total defense, while the Trojans are 76th.

We will have much more on the ins and outs of the game as the month progresses, but, for all their similarities, if it’s assumed that both offenses will perform as they have all season, the winner will likely be determined by whether USC’s defense can out-perform it’s track-record and shut down J.T. Barrett and the Buckeye offense; and I’m certainly not going to bet against #16 in his final game in the Scarlet and Gray.

“And the Bosas thus join the Griffins – Archie and younger brother Ray – as the only other brother tandem in Ohio State history to earn first-team All-America accolades. Archie was a three-time All-American (1973-74-75) and Ray was an All-American in 1977.”

-The Ohio State University

First thing’s first, congratulations to Nick Bosa on his first career first-team All-America selection, as well as to Billy Price and Denzel Ward for adding another accolade to their hauls.

Second thing’s second, I think Nick Bosa is a beast, and I am very glad that the Buckeyes will have his talents for one more year (assuming that he doesn’t skip his junior season to prep for the draft).

However, third thing’s third, I can’t shake the feeling that these postseason honors for the younger Bosa are at least partially due to his last name. Without a doubt, Bosa has been a terror for opposing defenses this season, even though he is just one of many incredibly productive defensive linemen for the Buckeyes.

But, when you look at his stats, his inclusion is a little suspect, leading you to wonder if he is filling up his trophy case on his (and his brother’s) reputation. His 14.5 tackles for loss lead the team, but tie him for 30th nationally, and his seven sacks are good for 39th in the country; and keep in mind that he had the benefit of the Big Ten Championship game to add to his stats.

Clearly it has been taken into account that OSU d-line coach Larry Johnson’s philosophy is to rotate players in more freely than on most teams, meaning that Bosa’s numbers are not as high as they would be if he had played as many snaps as some of the other award contenders. But, at some point, don’t awards need to be decided by what actually happens on the field, and not the perceived impact that someone could have on a game if he was playing more on a team that didn’t have a whole slew of NFL-level defensive line talent?

Look, I don’t begrudge Bosa his Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year Award or any of his All-American honors, I just think that in a year in which there could have been serious debate as to who the best Buckeye d-lineman was (when you you include Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis), it looks odd to have Nick Bosa clearly being celebrated on a much larger scale.
