As a Navy vet I was disappointed that they choked. 2 penalites that made a last second 38 yard FG into a not-makeable 48 yard one was just unforgivable.
Dude's kid had plenty to spare, it was just wide left. When he first kicked it, I thought he made it. You're right, though, in that the penalties most likely caused them to lose.

The Buckeyes reached a 40-point lead against the Tribe.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are now on a three-game winning streak after defeating the William & Mary Tribe on Saturday afternoon, 97-62. With the win, OSU now improves to 8-3 (2-0) on the season.

11,158 fans in attendance made the trek out to Value City Arena for the noon tipoff to witness the Buckeyes continue their winning ways.

Keita Bates-Diop led all players on the floor in points. On 11-of-16 shooting, Bates-Diop scored 27. Sixteen of those points came in the second half; on top of that, the forward secured five rebounds.

From the field, Kaleb Wesson had the best percentage (70%) after making 7-of-10 shots. He ended up with 17 points in the game—good enough for second most on the team.

Right behind Wesson was C.J. Jackson. Jackson had 16 points in the game, scoring eight points in either halves. Of the Buckeyes, Jackson had the best long distance shot, making 4-of-5 three-point attempts. He also ended the game with six assists and two rebounds.

Prior to the game, it was announced that freshman Kyle Young wouldn’t play for the Buckeyes due to a sprained right ankle.

Here’s how this one went down.

For the first four minutes, the Tribe were sticking with the Buckeyes. Both teams went into the first media timeout at 10-10. Two William & Mary three-pointers were a reason for how well their offense was operating in the early going.

On top of that, both teams were trading baskets. Not long after the media timeout, a Nathan Knight jumper for W&M was answered by a layup from OSU’s Kaleb Wesson; a Jae’Sean Tate layup was then answered by a Tribe layup—with Knight being the scorer.

At the 11:35 mark of the half, the home team only held a 22-20 lead against the visitors. However, things were about to bust open in favor for the Buckeyes.

Shots made by Bates-Diop, free throws made by Wesson, and a three-pointer from Andrew Dakich fueled an 18-2 Ohio State scoring run. At the same time, the Tribe were struggling to move the ball toward the basket. Over the course of 7:23, five turnovers were committed by the visitors, as well as a scoring drought that reached five minutes. In all of this hustle and bustle, the Buckeyes were able to take a commanding 15-point lead, 37-22, with 4:23 left in the first half.

After the under-4 timeout, WIlliam & Mary continued their shooting slump—ultimately causing their deficit to increase. There was a stretch where the Tribe went 1-of-10 from the field. On the other side, C.J. Jackson hit an NBA-range three-pointer and kept the scoring run going. Even though the visiting side put a few points on the board, it wasn’t enough to completely stop OSU’s run. With just under two minutes left in the half, the Buckeyes had a run that got up to 17-2. The run, in large part, fueled Ohio State’s largest lead of the game, 22 points with 1:37 remaining in the half, and paced the Buckeyes in the first half.

When the halftime siren sounded, the Bucks held a 48-32 lead. At the break, two Buckeyes crossed the double-digit scoring mark, as Wesson had 13 points and Bates-Diop had 11.

From the field, Ohio State shot a very nice 69 percent; William & Mary had a slightly less nice mark, hitting 50 percent of their shots. Both teams attempted 26 shots from the field in the first half. In the turnover category, both teams were close to each other. WM had eight TOs, while OSU had six.

Down 16 off the break, William & Mary needed to get hot from the field if they wanted to extend their winning streak to six games. On their first possession, Knight made a layup via a David Cohn assist. However, Bates-Diop answered with a two-pointer of his own.

Bates-Diop’s make started off a streak of six-straight made shots for Ohio State. Two of those made shots were from beyond the arc—and both belonged to Kam Williams. Not before long, the under-16 minute timeout came with the Buckeyes pushing their lead out to 23 points, 62-39.

Ohio State maintained the hot-hand, and hit 10 (!) straight shots from the floor. On the backend of the streak, Dakich and Jackson buried three-pointers. With 12:24 left in regulation, the Buckeyes were way out in front, 74-50.

Even though they treaded on a 20-plus point lead, the Scarlet and Gray were about to venture into the more impressive depths. Continuing their successful shooting ways, and mixed with William & Mary going on a four-minute point drought, OSU went up by as many as 32. Ohio State hit the plateau with the help of an 11-0 scoring run.

Also fueling the run, William & Mary struggled to hold onto the ball, turning it over seven times in just 13 minutes of second half play. (In comparison, the Buckeyes only coughed the ball up three times in the same time span.)

But, the scoring run wasn’t done, as OSU went on a 16-0 run in the waning minutes of the half. Coupled with a six-minute duration of zero Tribe points, the Buckeyes were up 92-52 with 4:49 left in the game.

Down 40, there was no coming back from it, and the Buckeyes rode off into the afternoon with another home win.

The Buckeyes get a six-day break before they have to hit the hardwood again. Their next game will be next Saturday at home against Appalachian State. Tip-off for that one will be at 6 p.m. ET.

The Buckeyes rebounded from last weekend’s sweep with a win on the road against the best team in the Big Ten

Hockey is a very unpredictable sport. You can be outshot by 30 and win. You can get swept at home against an unranked team and then beat the No. 7 team in the country.

Ohio State got that last one’s cheat code enabled, and beat No. 7 Minnesota in Columbus on Friday night, 2-1 in overtime, on a Christian Lampasso goal. The Buckeyes improve to 9-4-4 and earn a split, at minimum, with the conference leader for the weekend.

Not too shabby.

Truth be told, this was about as well as Ohio State can play, and doing it against a top-10 team and conference favorite certainly speaks volumes about where this team’s come to, even after losing Nick Schilkey, David Gust and the entire goaltending lineup from last year’s team.

Sean Romeo’s been the biggest difference maker this year. Christian Frey and Matt Tomkins personified mediocrity and Sean Romeo’s come in and blown them away. He made 33 saves on the night in Columbus, allowing only a single goal to Minnesota. He came in with a .920 save percentage and that’ll only go up after his 33/34 save night.

Tanner Laczynski scored his seventh goal and 21st point of the season in just 17 games as the sophomore put home the first one of the game at 14:46 of the first period tonight. Mason Jobst and Matthew Weis had the assists.

Laczynski got the feed across the netmouth from in below the circles on the man advantage and put it past Minnesota’s version of J.T. Barrett, the player who just never seems to graduate, Eric Schierhorn. Somehow he’s only a junior.

Jobst’s assist was his 100th career point, in just 91 career games as a Buckeye.

OSU outshot Minnesota 10-7 in the first, showing an advantage at 5-on-5 even strength, but were outgunned by a tally of 16-7 in the second. Minnesota coming from behind is where your favorable ratio of shots on goal goes to die.

Minnesota just couldn’t tie this one, though.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the No. 15 Buckeyes all the way into the waning minutes of the third. Romeo stopped all of Minnesota’s shots, clearly a feat in itself, until 16:16 of the third. Rem Pitlick scored the tying goal for the Golden Gophers and suddenly we were off to overtime.

Minnesota and Ohio State both had 11 shots on goal each in the third and overtime, despite the Gophers being down until 3:44 was all that remained in the game and they tied it.

They wouldn’t score another one, however.

Christian Lampasso scored his sixth of the year. He came into the night shooting a percentage unsustainable if it was cut in half, 29.4 percent, and then scored tonight on one of his only two shots.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) December 9, 2017

Lampasso found a way to get the puck after Dakota Joshua crashed the net and hit the open side. Sometimes the puck just finds you in the right place. Joshua had the primary assist and Luke Stork the secondary.

The Buckeyes will hope to continue the magic tomorrow night as they host No. 7 Minnesota again on Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET.

The Tribe come to Columbus for a showdown with the Buckeyes.

Ohio State, fresh off of back-to-back Big Ten wins, will play out of conference for the next three weeks. On Saturday they'll tip off against William & Mary to start that stretch, looking to build on a positive early season that's seen the Buckeyes get out to a 7-3 record under new coach Chris Holtmann.

A throttling of Wisconsin a week ago and a come-from-behind win over Michigan two days later were just what the doctor ordered for the Buckeyes. They'd previously blown second-half leads in consecutive games, eventually falling to Butler (Holtmann's last school) in overtime and Clemson in regulation.

Now, Ohio State gets a brief respite before facing No. 11 North Carolina on Dec. 23. The Buckeyes' mid-December schedule resembles a late-season SEC football powerhouse's: William & Mary, Appalachian State, and The Citadel are next up for Holtmann's promising young squad. (Who are we kidding—an SEC football team would never schedule a program as good as Appalachian State in November.)

Meanwhile, the William & Mary Tribe sit at 6-2, having faced down a slate of opponents that most people would be hard-pressed to find on a map. They lost their opener to High Point—seems fitting, IMO—but have since only stumbled against UCF. Along the way, the Tribe have racked up wins over the likes of Hampton, Shenandoah, and Savannah State.

They'll face a much taller task on Saturday, as they head to Value City Arena in Columbus to try to knock off a storied major-conference program and gain a signature win for coach Tony Shaver.

Numbers to know

47.3

They may not be a powerhouse, but the Tribe can shoot from deep with the best of them. They're shooting threes at a 47.3 percent clip this season, and it's not as though they've got the benefit of a small sample size here: they've attempted a whopping 207 three-pointers this season, good for more than 25 attempts per game. The Buckeyes, by comparison, have attempted 15 fewer threes in two more games, and are also only hitting 34.4 percent of them.

99

Keita Bates-Diop, far and away the most prolific rebounder on either team, has 99 of them on the year so far. That's 37 more than the next-closest Buckeye (Jae'Sean Tate) and 30 more than William & Mary's best rebounder, Nathan Knight. If the Buckeyes can clean up the glass at their normal clip behind KBD's efforts, they should have little trouble controlling this game.

65

It's been a tale of two teams for the Tribe so far this season. In their two losses, they averaged just 65 points; that number jumps all the way up to 94 PPG for their wins. This is a team with a ton of explosive scoring potential, but they haven't fared well when they've been dragged down into defensive showdowns. Look for KBD (14 blocks) and Tate (12 steals) to try to force William & Mary closer to 65 than 94.

Cast of Characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

The junior forward from Normal, Ill., has been Ohio State's MVP through the first quarter of the season, and it isn't particularly close. Bates-Diop leads the team in minutes, points, and blocks per game, shoots free throws at an 80 percent clip, and turns the ball over fewer than two times a game despite his high usage rate. He's the best two-way player on Chris Holtmann's team, and he should have no trouble eating against a team that's 301st nationally in scoring defense.

C.J. Jackson

Jackson, a junior guard hailing from North Carolina, has really come into his own as Ohio State's primary ball-handler this season. He's dishing out close to four assists to go with his 13.2 points per game. He's also nearly automatic from the line, making just shy of 85 percent of his free throws. Jackson's about as solid a contributor as the Buckeyes could ask for—look for him to make a big impact against the Tribe.

William & Mary

Connor Burchfield

Remember those absurd three-point stats up above? Senior guard Connor Burchfield is the best of the bunch at putting them up from deep. He hits threes at a 54.7 percent clip, making 29 out of his 53 attempts through eight games. Burchfield has been a key contributor in multiple Tribe wins, putting up a cool 30 points to help sink Marshall and adding another 27 to help put away Savannah State a week ago. If the Buckeyes can limit him, they'll likely cruise, but if Burchfield gets hot, this one might get too close for comfort.

Nathan Knight

Burchfield might be the team's guy from distance, but Knight is the most complete offensive player the Tribe have. He leads William & Mary in scoring, averaging 20.3 PPG, and gets to the free throw line at a rate three times higher than any of his teammates. He makes the most of those charity stripe opportunities, too, making 80 percent of his attempts. Knight has potential to stuff the stat sheet and get some Buckeye defenders in foul trouble.

Plus, J.T. Barrett’s love for his brothers pushed him to be ready for the Big Ten title game.

“A trio of Ohio State football players earned All-America honors on Thursday, headlined by Billy Price and Denzel Ward, who were first team choices by Walter Camp and The Athletic, respectively.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

The 2017 College Football Awards was on Thursday, and at least one Buckeyes walked away with some hardware. For the second year in a row, the Rimington Award for the best center in college football went to an Ohio State player, this time Billy Price.

Shortly after Price won the Rimington Award, a few more All-America teams were announced, including the Walter Camp All-America Team. The nation’s oldest All-America team recognized three Buckeyes this year, with Price and Denzel Ward getting first-team honors, and Nick Bosa recognized as a second-team player.

Despite making the trip with Price for the award ceremony, QB J.T. Barrett didn’t end up winning the Davey O’Brien Award for best quarterback in college — the honor going instead to Heisman Trophy leader Baker Mayfield.

Barrett does still have a chance to take home another trophy for his senior campaign — aside from the Cotton Bowl trophy -- as he was announced as a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, given to the best college football player from the state of Texas. Barrett will once again come head-to-head with Baker Mayfield.

“And Coach asks a question, ‘What would you do for your brother?’ And it’s one of those things, ‘Well, I’d do anything.’ It’s something you could say, but I try to also show that through my actions, and I think that’s just part of it.”

-J.T. Barrett via Tony Gerdeman, The-Ozone

As people continue to debate the up and down career of fifth-year senior J.T. Barrett, one thing that has never been doubted is his commitment to Ohio State and his teammates, along with his desire to lead them into battle. This proved ever true ahead of the Big Ten Championship game, in which he knew he couldn’t leave his brothers down a man, and did everything in his power to speed up his recovery and get back on the field.

And, he did just that.

In less than a week, Barrett went from arthroscopic knee surgery to playing in a conference title game. Usually a procedure that includes three to four weeks of rehab, Barrett had a “station” set up in the training facility where he could get iced up and receive other treatments while watching film and preparing mentally for the challenge.

Barrett’s performance against Wisconsin wouldn’t even make his career-highlight reel, but his endurance during the week ahead of the matchup will live on in Buckeye infamy.

Kyle Snyder is currently wrestling in Iran for the World Club Championship instead of facing mighty Indiana this weekend so prepare for voters to throw another tantrum about it come Big Ten/NCAA awards season.

— Ryan Ginn (@rmginn) December 8, 2017

Ohio State boasts one of the all-time great wrestlers and he hasn’t even graduated yet. Kyle Snyder has had unparalleled success for someone who is only 22 years old, with one the top honors coming by way of an Olympic gold medal (97kg) at the 2016 Rio Summer Games. He’s also the youngest Olympic and World champion in United States wrestling history, not to mention the litany of Ohio State, Big Ten and NCAA records he’s smashed and honors he’s won over the past few years.

While the Ohio State wrestling team takes on Indiana this weekend, Snyder was instead halfway across the world, competing in the World Cup Championship in Iran. While Snyder won his set 3-0, the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club finished the tournament as the runner-up.

Choosing international competition over collegiate should be a no-brainer, but there is certainly a group of delegates who will use this decision against Snyder come time for postseason award voting. This will be Snyder’s last season as a student at Ohio State, and he will almost assuredly spend the next year and half preparing to take home another medal in the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.
