Will the most decorated Buckeye QB ever make it as more than a back-up in the NFL? (Hint: Probably not, but maybe.)

Well, well, well. One of the more polarizing players to don the scarlet and gray is now taking the next step in becoming an NFL quarterback. Despite his up-and-down career with the Buckeyes, three-time captain J.T. Barrett is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Ohio State and Big Ten history. He broke 39 records during his time in Columbus, and is now setting his sights on playing pro ball.

As the only three-time captain in Ohio State football history, Barrett’s leadership skills have never been in question. The locker room was behind him since Day 1, and he didn’t let the quarterback competition between Cardale Jones in 2015 affect how he led the team or performed when called upon. His level-headed approach saved the Buckeyes countless times from getting too far behind.

Barrett is also the only Ohio State quarterback to have ever beat rival Michigan (as the starter) four times. The QB totaled 44 starts during his collegiate career, and set a school record with 38 victories among them. He was named Big Ten Quarterback of the Year three times and set conference records for career total offensive yards (12,697) — besting Drew Brees’ prior record —, touchdown passes (104), and touchdowns responsible for (147) — among others.

There’s no doubt that he set a new standard among the Big Ten conference, but he also set an incredibly high bar for the future QBs at Ohio State, setting 35 school records. (Seriously, there are way too many to list, but they are all equally impressive.)

He may live on as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play for Ohio State, but there are plenty of Buckeye fans out there who will tell you it isn’t all about the numbers.

His career began by setting out-of-this-world expectations during the 2014 season; J.T. Barrett quickly filled the shoes of the injured incumbent Braxton Miller, and showed that he too could be dynamic both on the ground and in the air. When he went down during the regular-season finale against Michigan, he was still assumed to be the starter once he rehabbed ahead of the 2015 season.

But then Cardale Jones led Ohio State to a 59-0 win over Wisconsin for the Big Ten title, and then bested Alabama and Oregon on the way to winning the first-ever College Football Playoff.

Barrett and Jones would spend the offseason competing for the No. 1 job, but Meyer and co. messed up royally by keeping them in competition throughout the 2015 season — with Barrett usually playing second-fiddle until Jones threw an interception.

Barrett took the reigns back full-time in 2016, but, with a new team chemistry and very young receivers, he struggled in the passing game for much of the year. He was still a formidable rusher though, and calling a Barrett tuck-and-run play was eventually the new norm. He continued to improve through the offseason ahead of his senior campaign, and came into 2017 with a new air of confidence.

The receivers now had a year under their belt and were trusted more often by Barrett to make contested catches (or at least draw pass interference), which they usually did. But every now and again Barrett would throw the ball so off-target that it would make people wonder how he earned a scholarship in the first place.

Consistency has been a recurring issue for the Buckeye quarterback, but if you look at his full body of work, there’s no one that comes close to his production. Whether or not that translates to the NFL is yet to be seen -- although, some draft-niks are already throwing around some pretty big opinions about Barrett’s potential.

Mayock says JT Barrett has everything you want in NFL QB but high-level talent. Thinks he gets drafted late 3rd day, is ideal backup for a long time.

— Marcus Hartman (@marcushartman) February 26, 2018

Look, Mike Mayock may be the end-all and be-all of NFL Draft analysis, but sometimes he goes a little off-base. I don’t disagree with his analysis of Barrett, but at the same time: dayummmm, he really said it. Being an NFL back-up QB is not the end of the world, especially considering some of the successful NFL quarterbacks this season: Case Keenum, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Super Bowl Winner and freaking S.B. M.V.P. Nick Foles, even all paid their dues as backups.

My prediction is that Barrett ends up among the coaching ranks, sooner rather than later, but he’ll without a doubt get a shot to make it in the NFL. Where that shot comes from, and how long he’ll be able to capitalize on it, are the bigger questions heading into the NFL Combine.

Scouting Report

Here’s what the pros are saying in his NFL Combine Scouting Report:

STRENGTHS: Outstanding leader. Teammates love him and he handled the rotation quarterback issue with maturity in 2016. Runs to his size and has determination on short yardage and in red area when running. Good decision maker in zone read. Throws with touch to the perimeter and will change speeds to make his throws more catchable. Pocket mobility has improved over time. Willing to stand in and take the hit in order to deliver the throw. Leg strength allows him to fight through sack attempts and keep a play alive. Does a good job of looking safeties off of his deep sideline targets. Recognizes when cornerbacks are looking to bait him. Wants to win from pocket and will try and sit in the pocket rather than bolting too quickly.

WEAKNESSES: Operation time and ball handling are a little slow. Not a naturally accurate passer. Makes receivers work too hard. Ball placement can be a struggle even on swing passes and short throws. Completed a measly 28 percent of his throws over 21 yards this season. Seam curls come wide open and he will opt for safe throws in middle of the field. Misses opportunities to challenge safeties. Gets it out a step late on intermediate and deep throws. Halts progressions early rather than allowing route development. Three-quarter release makes him short in the pocket and allows defenders to maul his pass attempts. Release and arm strength are below average. Allows rushers to get on top of him.
Player schedule

  • Day 1 (Wednesday, Feb. 28): Travel, registration, hospital pre-exam, orientation, interviews

Could a 2019 prospect follow in the footsteps of his former teammate?

After being on their recruiting radar for quite awhile, class of 2019 cornerback Adonis Otey finally locked in a full ride scholarship from the Ohio State coaching staff on Tuesday.

“Coach [Tony] Alford just told me to give him a call and I did. He offered me and he just told me to build a relationship with him moving forward.” The four-star prospect stated to Land-Grant Holy Land nearly 24 hours after receiving his opportunity to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

Blessed to receive an offer from Ohio State University #Gobuckeyes ⚪pic.twitter.com/5MNmKJKbEM

— Adonis Otey (@d1dizzle) February 28, 2018

“It feels great to be offered by them. The great tradition of sending defensive backs to the NFL is what comes to mind when I think of OSU,” said Otey about the chance to play for The Ohio State Buckeyes.

While Otey, who plans to visit Columbus this spring, just picked up his scholarship from Urban Meyer, Tony Alford, and company, he isn’t the first prospect from Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to earn an offer from the Buckeyes.

With former Blaze running back Master Teague now on campus as a true freshman with the Buckeyes, and class of 2019 wide receiver Trey Knox on their radar, Ohio State is definitely trying to build a pipeline to the Tennessee power.

Even though playing with familiar faces would be nice, the 6-foot, 175-pounder has a lot to think over in the coming months. With offers on the table from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisville, Michigan, Tennessee, and Virginia to name a few off his quickly growing list of potential landing spots, Otey isn’t ready to name any leaders.

“I’m not sure. I’m still looking, but it would be like old times suiting up with Master (Teague).” He said.

As a junior for Blackman, Adonis, the 28th cornerback and 309th overall prospect in the class of 2019, per the latest 247Sports Composite Rankings, ended last season with 22 total tackles to help pace the Blaze to an overall record of 9-3.

It shouldn’t take you long to see what caught the Buckeyes eye with these highlights of Otey in action, via Hudl:

  • In an interview with Adam Friedman of Rivals, massive class of 2019 offensive tackle Xavier Truss of Bishop Hendricken (RI) said Ohio State is one of the programs sticking out in his recruitment. Yet to visit the OSU campus, Truss hopes to make it down to Columbus over the spring.
  • Four-star 2019 National Christian Academy (MD) offensive tackle William Harrod Tells Brian Dohn of 247Sports that his recent scholarship from the Ohio State University is “huge”.
  • Ohio State has reportedly shown interest in four-star 2020 point guard Jalen Cone. Watching his recruitment take off over the last few months, the 5-foot-11 North Carolina native holds an early offer from Virginia Tech, Hampton University, North Carolina Greensboro, and others.

Also, despite what you might have heard, Chris Holtmann is not the third-highest paid coach in college basketball.

“‘When coach gave me a call, I was surprised because all you may do and all the help you may get (in pursuing a job), you never know until the end’ whether it will work out, Johnson said. ‘I couldn’t be more excited.’”

-Taver Johnson, via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

One of the things that Urban Meyer has said repeatedly since he got to Columbus was that he wanted to bring in guys that wanted to be in Columbus; wanted to be at Ohio State. One of the reasons that he famously got burnt out at the University of Florida was that because of the constant recruiting battles in the state, and in the SEC, he had to take fliers on guys with dubious character just to remain competitive.

From day one at OSU, Meyer has sought to only bring in players— and coaches— who shared his vision of the program and wanted to live up to the expectations of being a Buckeye. In the hiring of new co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Alex Grinch and cornerbacks and special teams coach Taver Johnson, it appears that he has found two individuals that want just that.

On Wednesday, the new hires met the Buckeye beat for the first time, and it was clear that when the opportunity presented itself, both wanted to be nowhere else but Columbus. Grinch mentioned the fact that he grew up in Grove City and that his wife is from Alliance. He also played his college football at DIII power Mount Union; he called Ohio home. That was a huge part of his decision to leave Washington State.

For Johnson, his hiring was also a return. The former Purdue and Temple assistant was on Jim Tressel’s staff beginning in 2007, and left after Luke Fickell’s interim season in 2011. However, when he heard that Kerry Coombs was leaving OSU for the NFL, he reached out to Meyer, who had been an assistant coach at Notre Dame when Johnson was a graduate assistant. Clearly, with his experience with Meyer and at OSU, Johnson knew he wanted to be a part of this staff.

Not only are both coaches in a place that they want to be, but they are stepping into incredibly important coaching responsibilities as well. Together they will oversee the Buckeyes’ defensive secondary, which has been the backbone of the team’s success in recent years. It will undoubtedly help as they mold and recruit Buckeye DBs to be all-in on what Ohio State means and expects.

“No, Chris Holtmann isn’t the third-highest-paid coach nationally.”

-Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

When this graphic came out from USA TODAY on Wednesday, something about it certainly didn’t make sense. As we discussed way back in June, while Holtmann’s assistants were certainly getting a substantial pay raise from what they were making at Butler, the salaries for Holtmann and company weren’t anywhere near the likes of Mike Krzyzewski, John Calipari, or even someone named Larry Krystkowiak who coaches at Utah.

The source of the confusion is that the total quoted by the paper includes the one-time, lump-sum buyout of Holtmann’s Butler contract (including nearly $2 million in taxes). So, despite the USA Today’s oddly laid out table, as Jardy explains, the actual total for Holtmann, including incentives and deferred payments, is actually around the $3 million mark. That number is just under what Gregg Marshall, who was almost the coach at OSU while Holtmann was playing hard to get, makes at Wichita State.

Holtmann’s base salary is $2.7 million, which would put him in line with coaches like Oregon’s Dana Altman, Missouri’s Cuonzo Martin, Maryland’s Mark Turgeon, Virginia Tech’s Buzz Williams (another rumored candidate for the OSU job), and Illinois’ Brad Underwood.

However, I think that at this point, it is needless to say that should Holtmann be able to continue the trajectory that he currently has his team on, it is quite likely that he could be looking to renegotiate or extend his contract under new terms sooner rather than later.

“Who all is going to be protecting the next quarterback? The Buckeyes have recruited much better up front over the last couple years and appear to have some nice depth now added to the mix, but the offensive line might be the toughest unit to peg down for starters across the board at this point.”

-Austin Ward, Land of 10

There is no doubt that the Ohio State offensive line has had its ups and downs in recent years (although it hasn’t been down enough to prevent Michigan from recruiting based on OSU’s successes at the position). However, as Ward points out, while looking to fill three spots— starting at the center and moving right— there are a lot of options heading into the 2018 season. So, projecting the starters is more difficult than it has been in recent years.

Returners Isaiah Prince and Michael Jordan are firmly entrenched on the left side. Branden Bowen will presumably be healthy by the fall, following a fractured fibula suffered in the game against Maryland. Should he be back in time, he is almost certainly going to be in the starting lineup somewhere on the right side. From there, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether the other two spots will be filled by Thayer Munford, Wyatt Davis, Josh Myers, Brady Taylor, Matthew Burrell, or anyone else.

But, the key will be for Urban Meyer, offensive coordinators Greg Schiano and Ryan Day, and offensive line coach Greg Studrawa to settle on a rotation as soon as possible. As there will be enough in flux breaking in a new starting quarterback, it won’t be pretty if the guys protecting him haven’t had time to mesh before the Buckeyes head down to Jerry’s World to face Gary Patterson’s TCU defense.

LOL, the only offensive lineman that Michigan can brag about are ones that went to Ohio State.

Wow, things must be getting rough up in Ann Arbor, because in a recent recruiting poster heralding the University of Michigan’s new offensive line coach, Ed Warinner, the Wolverine graphics department decided to highlight a handful of current NFL linemen that Warinner coached before his current job.

The problem is that all five of the NFL players that they focused on are former Buckeyes; Taylor Decker, Jack Mewhort, Corey Linsley, Reid Fragel, and Andrew Norwell. As former Buckeye and NFL defensive lineman Matt Finkes points out, as funny as this is, it’s kind of sad to see how far the once-proud Maize and Blue have fallen... ok, it’s not that sad.

When TTUN is sooooo desperate to tout the NFL to recruits, they list #Buckeye players on their recruiting posters.....sad day for @CoachJim4UM and @UMichFootball pic.twitter.com/2CP7nzqd53

— Matt Finkes (@mattfinkes) February 28, 2018

With coaches moving from job to job more frequently in recent years, this has become a more common practice. However, Jacksonville Jaguar super-corner Jalen Ramsey has already made his feelings very clear about his former Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher using his NFL success to recruit at Texas A&M.

In a tweet earlier this week, the All-Pro said, “...don’t use me on a poster for a school I didn’t go to & for a coach who didn’t teach me how to be a DB.”

Know I have nothing but respect for you Coach Brew but don’t use me on a poster for a school I didn’t go to & for a coach who didn’t teach me how to be a DB.

— Jalen Ramsey (@jalenramsey) February 27, 2018

Obviously the situation is slightly different here, as Warinner was the offensive line coach that worked directly with the five players singled out on the UM poster. However, it will be interesting to see if Decker, Mewhort, Linsley, Fragel, or Norwell chime in about being name-checked on recruiting materials for TTUN.
