The Buckeyes also snapped a two-game losing streak with the win against the Scarlet Knights.

The Ohio State Buckeyes got back to their winning ways on Senior Night, as they snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 79-52.

With it being the final home game of the 2017-18 season, four student-athletes (Andrew Dakich, Jae’Sean Tate, Kam Williams and Keita Bates-Diop) were recognized prior to the game tipping off.

In front of 15,620, the Buckeyes got the win behind strong efforts on the scoring front from C.J. Jackson, Williams and Kaleb Wesson.

Jackson, who scored only two points in the first half, had an electric second half, scoring 16. Jackson made his first five shots in the second half, and ended the game with 18 points with two rebounds.

Williams led the team in three-point makes with three, and ended the game with 13 points and three rebounds. As a team, the Buckeyes made eight shots from beyond the arc.

Wesson, a freshman, continues to impress. After leaving the game early with an apparent ankle injury, the Westerville, Ohio native ended the game with 14 points and five boards.

Throughout the season, Tate and Bates-Diop were the main scorers for the Scarlet and Gray; on Tuesday night, however, they were held in check. Tate put up nine points, while KBD, who is known to get double-doubles, was held to six points and eight rebounds.

By the time the final horn sounded, Ohio State shot 59 percent from the field, knocking down 33 of their 56 shots. Rutgers shot 41 percent, making 22 of 54 shots. Rebounding kept the Scarlet Knights in the game for the first half—and was a reason for their early comeback—but in the second half, the Buckeyes outrebounded the visitors, and ended the game with a 36-25 advantage in that category.

Ohio State limited second-chance opportunities, which helped in getting the win at home on Senior Night.

Here’s how this one went down.

Rutgers won the opening tip, and was pressed getting into the paint. With nobody open down low, Shaquille Doorson passed the ball to Eugene Omoruyi at around the free-throw line, who then quickly got the shot off and banked it in.

The visitors may have scored the first points, but the Buckeyes were about to set the record straight. After Kaleb Wesson netted a free throw, Andrew Dakich drove into the lane and put up the Scarlet and Gray’s first field goal of the night. A missed Rutgers three-ball by Issa Thiam led to a KBD rebound and a three-pointer being made by Kam Williams. On the next possession, Williams picked the ball away from Thiam, and knocked down an open three, giving the Bucks a 9-4 lead at the under-16 minute media timeout.

A missed three-pointer and a blocked layup compounded problems for the Rutgers offense. They went over 2:30 without a point, as OSU put together a 10-0 run. A couple of buckets by the Scarlet Knights, including a dunk from Corey Sanders after a bobbled rebound from the Bucks, gave the visitors a little life on the road. However, turnovers and missed shots—which were of quality—made sure the Buckeyes lead was safe in the first eight minutes.

The Buckeyes rebuttal to the Sanders dunk was a Williams jumper, which was good. After the make, Micah Potter got in on the scoring by getting a dunk of his own, as KBD found room from a Rutgers’ screen to find an open Potter on the baseline. Going into the next media timeout at the 10:47 mark, the home team had themselves a 17-9 lead.

After the break, OSU continued their quest to push out to a double-digit lead. After a missed wide-open long-ball in the corner by Rutgers’ Matt Bullock, Williams scooped up a defensive rebound before handing the ball to Tate, who finished with a layup. The Buckeyes pulled out to a 21-11 lead at the under-8 media timeout, and shot a (very) nice 69 percent from the field. On the other side of the floor, Rutgers was making 29 percent of their shots. That number would drop right after the timeout, as Omoruyi missed a long two-pointer, clanking it off the back iron.

From there, things got boomin’ for OSU. Tate and Wesson made inside shots, as Williams connected on a three-pointer. All of this was punctuated with a Dakich-to-KBD alley-oop to put the Buckeyes up 30-11. Rutgers, though, would answer quickly. A 10-0 run was put together in less than two minutes, bringing them within nine. After Sanders made the shot to set the run at 10, Wesson left the game after appearing to get his ankle rolled—leading to Potter checking in for him.

Rutgers pulled within seven, 30-23, thanks to a 5-for-5 shooting streak. An air-balled three by Dakich as the shot clock expired led to the visitors having a chance to get their run even higher, however, C.J. Jackson was able to break the run on the next possession with a runner that looked like it might have been an alley-oop attempt that went in on its won.

The Scarlet Knights, who are 1-33 in their last 34 Big Ten road games, were making a serious push to close out the half. By the time the halftime horn sounded, Rutgers was only down five, 32-27, thanks to a 16-2 run, which included makes on 7-of-8 shots; Ohio State during this run was having issues on all sides of the floor. The Buckeyes were cold from the field, making one of their last eight field goals, and went the final 2:55 without a point.

Rutgers improved their shooting mark to 43 percent at the break, while Ohio State dropped down to 52 percent. From downtown, OSU was 3-of 10; Rutgers was just one of six. The Rutgers comeback was due in large part to getting the ball to their scorers, Sanders and Thiam, and getting offensive rebounds. Sanders led the team with eight points, while Thiam had six. On the rebounding front, Rutgers led 17-15, and held a 5-3 advantage on offensive boards.

Bates-Diop was held to four points on 2-of-6 shooting, while Williams led the team with 11 points on a 3-of-5 mark from beyond the arc. At one point, OSU had a 19-point lead. Now, it had nearly evaporated.

In the second half, the Buckeyes shook off the ice, and began to heat back up from the field. Wesson, who returned from the earlier injury, made an old-fashioned three-point play, and Jackson put home a jumper and a three-ball. Holtmann took a timeout at the 15:21 mark of the half, and had his Buckeyes back up double digits, 40-29.

After the OSU timeout, Jackson went with a baseline runner to collect two more points. On the next possession, Tate put home a layup after the Bucks got an inbound from under the basket. Sanders whiffed on a point-blank shot, leading to Jackson hitting another runner on the other end of the floor. Those makes put together a 6-0 Buckeye run, which was juxtaposed with a scoring drought by Rutgers that lasted over 5:15.

The slump doomed the Scarlet Knights, as the Buckeyes pulled away for good. OSU made the most out of their inside opportunities, and from beyond the arc, Wesson and Tate rattled home shots to get the home team a 66-43 lead with under five minutes left to play.

As the time winded down, Holtmann subbed out Tate, Williams and KBD, which led to a standing ovation in the stands. Dakich also had his moment, as he was subbed in with 3:19 remaining in the game.

Michigan State holds court as the No. 1 team in the conference, thus giving them the No. 1-seed in the Big Ten Tournament next week, if their lead holds up. With the win on Tuesday night, Ohio State keeps pace just behind the Spartans, and are holding off the Purdue Boilermakers for the No. 2-seed.

Ohio State’s regular season finale takes place on Friday night against Indiana. The Buckeyes will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff. FS1 will broadcast the game.

The senior forward will have a chance to play in the NCAA tournament thanks to his efforts alongside his team.

“The low point definitely was the way we went into the Big Ten Tournament already defeated. Our team didn’t even want to play in the NIT. People were done. That was the low point, practices leading up to the Big Ten Tournament, instead of us saying, ‘We can do this,’ it was us saying, ‘We don’t want to do this.’”

- Jae’Sean Tate via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Jae’Sean Tate has seen both the ups and downs throughout his career at Ohio State, but he’s getting to experience the best of it for his final season in Columbus. With his last home game coming Tuesday against Rutgers, Tate will have a chance to help the Buckeyes get closer to a Big Ten championship. That’s something that no one expected this season, and to top that, a trip to the NCAA tournament is included. Tate talked about the lowest point from his time at Ohio State which came last season when the Buckeyes made the NIT but the team wasn’t all that invested or interested in playing.

Tate is second in scoring on the team, only behind Keita Bates-Diop, and provides such energy on the court that it helps get the team involved and focused. With 22 wins this season, Tate couldn’t really have asked for much more from his final year with the team and he’s certainly not going to let it come to an end right now. The Buckeyes still have work to do both in the Big Ten and in the NCAA tournament.

Campbell is intriguing because at times last season, he did emerge into the kind of game-changing factor the Buckeyes envisioned last year. In other instances, he didn’t quite have the impact needed in that critical H-back role in coach Urban Meyer’s power-spread offense.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

Austin Ward from Land of 10 broke down who his favorites are to have a breakout year in 2018 for Ohio State. His offensive pick was wide receiver Parris Campbell who was inconsistent this past season but came up with big plays in crucial moments as well. The defensive pick was rising sophomore defensive end Chase Young, who saw some early action last season but will get plenty more snaps with Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis having left. These are some solid choices, though I think Campbell was likely to have a much better year this season just based off the personnel change. With Barrett out, Haskins is likely to replace him and I would suspect that means throwing more which helps Campbell.

Defensively Young is definitely a guy to watch out for. Jeffrey Okudah is another player that is certain to shine next season after the way he performed against Sam Darnold and USC in the Cotton Bowl. Okudah replace Denzel Ward in the secondary, and there didn’t seem to be much of a difference in the defense that night so that’s a big credit to his play.

“The good news for Billy Davis is that he has no shortage of talent to work with at linebacker this year — although that was also true last season when his unit was widely viewed as having underachieved.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

One thing that can be overlooked often times is the impact assistant coaches have on a team. So Ward took a look at the assistant coaches on Ohio State’s staff that face the most pressure entering the 2018 season. His pick was linebacker coach Billy Davis. After a relatively average season in the linebacker department, the Buckeyes will want to improve upon their performance from a season ago. Davis will have the talent to mix and find what works, and Ward thinks that Malik Harrison will be key in that transition.

I think it’s also a key season for Kevin Wilson. With J.T. Barrett gone, it will be interesting to see if that opens up the playbook passing-wise. The Buckeyes have two monster running backs in J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber, so it will be hard not to focus on the run, but if Dwayne Haskins proves his arm is superb, then it could open up a lot of things for the Ohio State offense.

After two straight road losses, Ohio State will return home to square off with Rutgers on Senior Night.

It feels like the regular season just started the other day, but Senior Night is upon us, as the Ohio State Buckeyes will wrap up their home schedule tonight against Rutgers. Not only will seniors Jae’Sean Tate, Kam Williams, and Andrew Dakich be honored prior to the game, but redshirt junior Keita Bates-Diop will also be recognized before what could be his final home game in the scarlet and gray.

After two straight losses, Ohio State will try and send the seniors out on a winning note in their final home game. Following tough losses on the road to Penn State and Michigan over the past week, a home game against a struggling Rutgers squad could be just what the doctor ordered.

With the losses to Penn State and Michigan, Ohio State has fallen out of first place in the Big Ten, and faces an uphill climb to earn a share of the regular season conference championship. Not only does Ohio State have to defeat Rutgers tonight and Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., on Friday night, but they also will need Michigan State to slip up against either Illinois or Wisconsin for the Buckeyes to earn a share of the Big Ten title.

On Sunday, Ohio State hung with Michigan for most of the game, but the Buckeyes didn’t quite have the horses in the end to earn a regular season sweep of the Wolverines. Ohio State went into halftime down 33-28, and were within a bucket of Michigan a few times in the second half, but the Buckeyes couldn’t quite get over the hump to either tie the Wolverines or take the lead. Jae’Sean Tate finished with a team-high 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Keita Bates-Diop added 17 points despite hitting just five of his 17 field goal attempts.

The Buckeyes come into this game with a little bit of doubt after losing their last two games, but a game against a struggling Rutgers team could help to restore some of Ohio State’s confidence as they finish up the regular season on Friday night, and start the Big Ten Tournament next week. Ohio State already had little trouble taking care of Rutgers in their first matchup of the season, defeating the Scarlet Knights 68-46 last month in East Piscataway.

Over the last two games, it looks like Ohio State has some tired legs as the regular season is drawing to a close. Chris Holtmann took over a team that was decimated by transfers, leaving the Buckeyes little to work with off the bench. Holtmann was able to bring in Andrew Dakich, Kyle Young, and Musa Jallow to fill some of those holes, and they have all hand big moments during the year. The three-game suspension of Kam Williams depleted the bench even more, and even though Williams has been available for the last two games, Ohio State hasn’t quite looked like the same team. With some extra time off following the Big Ten Tournament, hopefully the Buckeyes are able to recharge their batteries before the NCAA Tournament begins.

Rutgers has lost eight of their last nine games, with the only win during that span coming in overtime at home last week against Northwestern. In their last game, the Scarlet Knights saw little go right in a 61-51 loss to Maryland on Saturday. The Terrapins built up a 31-19 halftime lead and Rutgers wasn’t able to climb their way back into the game. Eugene Omoruyi was the only Rutgers player to reach double figures, scoring 11 points in the loss. Leading scorer Corey Sanders struggled mightily, hitting just three of his 14 shots from the field, and finishing with six points.

In their meeting with Ohio State last month, Rutgers was dreadful from the field, shooting just 28.8 percent. DeShawn Freeman was the biggest bricklayer on the floor for the Scarlet Knights, missing all but one of his 12 field goal attempts. Geo Baker was Rutgers’ leading scorer in the game with 14 points. Since joining the Big Ten, Rutgers still hasn’t defeated Ohio State in the regular season, with the only win for the Scarlet Knights over the Buckeyes coming in the opening round of last year’s Big Ten Tournament.

Numbers to know

735

With his first rebound against Michigan on Sunday, Jae’Sean Tate broke a tie with John Havlicek to move into the 10th spot on Ohio State’s all-time rebounding list. Tate finished the game with 15 rebounds, giving him 735 boards in his Ohio State career. The senior now has his eyes set on moving higher up the list, with Ken Johnson currently sitting in ninth place with 739 career rebounds.

47.4

Ohio State was horrible from the foul line on Sunday afternoon, hitting just nine of the 19 free throws they attempted. The 47.4 percent the Buckeyes shot from the line was Ohio State’s worst showing of the season from the charity stripe. The only other game in which Ohio State failed to reach 60 percent from the foul line came in the loss to Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, where the Buckeyes hit just eight of their 16 foul shots.

1-34

In four years as a member of the Big Ten, Rutgers has posted just a 1-34 record on the road against conference foes. The only win for the Scarlet Knights on the road came last season, when Rutgers upended Penn State 70-68 in State College. The Scarlet Knights have lost both trips they have made to Columbus since joining the Big Ten.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

The senior will get some well-deserved acknowledgement prior to his final home game in the scarlet and gray. With his 20 points against Michigan, Tate was able to pass David Lighty on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list, and now currently sits in 21st place with 1,462 career points. With 24 more points, Tate will tie Jerry Francis for 20th all-time in Ohio State history. Tonight’s game will mark Tate’s 125th appearance for Ohio State and his 106th career start.

Keita Bates-Diop

Even though he still has another year of eligibility left, it’s like we are seeing Keita Bates-Diop’s last game in an Ohio State uniform tonight. The redshirt junior has put together an outstanding season, as he is averaging 19.5 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game. Last month against Rutgers, Bates-Diop scored a team-high 20 points, and added nine rebounds and five blocks. With 14 more points Bates-Diop will tie Lawrence Funderburk for 38th on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list.

Rutgers

Corey Sanders

The junior guard has been up-and-down since the beginning of the month, with two games where he reached 30 points, and two others where he failed to reach double figures. In a two-point loss to Purdue two weeks ago, Sanders scored 31 points, and also scored 30 points in an overtime win over Northwestern. In the games where he failed to reach double figures against Indiana and Maryland, Sanders shot a combined 4-25 from the field. Rutgers is going to need their leading scorer at the top of his game if they want to put a scare into the Buckeyes.

Eugene Omoruyi

Over the last three games, the most consistent Rutgers player has been the Ontario native. After missing games against Purdue and Indiana, the sophomore has scored at least eight points in each of the last three games, registering 11 points in losses to Nebraska and Maryland. Prior to his 11 point output against Nebraska, Omoruyi hadn’t reached double figures in scoring since he scored 10 points in a mid-December loss to Seton Hall.

Elite 2019 offensive tackle Harry Miller includes Ohio State in his top schools, while the Buckeyes offer one of Ohio’s best in 2020.

One of the reasons Urban Meyer has been able to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes as a continual powerhouse is due to his unparalleled ability to get the best recruits to commit to the University year after year.

With the 2018 recruiting cycle in the rearview mirror, the Buckeyes’ coaching staff can now focus on the 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes. But what might be Meyer’s best skill is recognizing talent early on, giving the Buckeyes an edges in building relationships with the best talents in the country early in their cycle.

Ohio State has done just this, already offering numerous prospects in the coming recruiting classes—and it appears the hard work is paying off. Late Monday afternoon, one of the top prospects in the 2019 class listed the program among his top schools.

Four-star offensive tackle Harry Miller (Buford, GA / Buford) has a longstanding relationship with the Ohio State football program. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound OT was offered a scholarship offer to play in Columbus last summer and has found his way on campus more than once since receiving the offer, with the latest visit being Jan. 13.

Because Miller is viewed as one of the best in next year’s class, his recruitment is further ahead of many of those in his class and he has already figured out what schools he wants to focus on during the rest of his recruitment.

Along with Ohio State, Notre Dame, Clemson, Georgia and Stanford all made the cut for his top five schools.

Miller is unquestionably one of the top talents in his class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 11 OT in 2019 as well as the No. 65 overall recruit. He is also the seventh best recruit from the talent-rich state of Georgia.

Ohio State will likely try and get him to take advantage of the new rules allowing prospects in the 2019 class take official visits in the spring. If the Buckeyes are able to do this, they would likely be viewed as the runaway favorite to land his services. As it stands today, the Buckeyes hold 67-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions.

Ohio State offers in-state star DE

While Urban Meyer has been able to successfully bring in top recruiting classes since his time at Ohio State, one of the few recent struggles has been with retaining Ohio talent.

Year after year Meyer makes it a point that in-state recruiting needs to be stronger. Sticking with this idea, the Buckeyes have offered one of the top Ohio-born recruits in the 2020 recruiting cycle in defensive end Darrion Henry (Cincinnati, OH / Princeton.)

Henry participated in the Under Armour All-American regional camp in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday and impressed those who attended the event.

Following the weekend camp, Henry visited Ohio State alongside two of his current teammates, 2020 linebacker Jaheim Thomas and 2020 cornerback Elijah Eberhardt, who also attended the Under Armor camp.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound has yet to receive a star rating on any of the recruiting databases, as is with most of the talents in this cycle. However, he has already been able to leave a strong impression on those scouting recruits. With his exceptional athletic skill set, it is likely that Henry will be one of the top recruits from Ohio, if not the best.

Ohio State will have their hands full in recruiting Henry as he also holds offers from Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Rutgers and Miami (OH).

The Buckeyes are the early favorites to land Henry, holding 100-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions, but again it is early and anything can happen in the world of recruiting.

Elite 2019 DT plans to visit Ohio State

The Ohio State coaching staff may be making a trip to Hawaii in the coming year, but it won’t be for a vacation - or at least not completely. Let’s be real, it’s Hawaii.

This is because one of top prospects in 2019 has shown interest in Ohio State. Five-star defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele (Honolulu, HI / St. Louis) holds 30 offers but has not yet received one from Ohio State—but that will likely change.

The No. 2 DT and No. 26 overall prospect in the class of 2019 took to Twitter Monday to provide an update on the schools he plans to unofficially visit. Included in that list was Ohio State.

So far, I will be taking my unofficial visits this spring to:
⭕️hio State Buckeyes
Alabama Crimson Tide
LSU Tigers

— FAATUI TUITELE (@tuitele87) February 19, 2018

After securing two of the country’s best DT’s in the 2018 recruiting cycle in Taron Vincent and Tommy Togiai as well as the No. 1 DT JUCO, the position is not one of much priority entering 2019. However, if the relationship between Tuitele and Ohio State continues to build, Meyer will ensure there is enough room for him to sign.

Currently, USC has the edge in earning a commitment from Tuitele, holding 75-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions, however this could easily change after spending time on some of the best campuses in the country.
