Elite 2019 offensive tackle Harry Miller includes Ohio State in his top schools, while the Buckeyes offer one of Ohio’s best in 2020.

One of the reasons Urban Meyer has been able to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes as a continual powerhouse is due to his unparalleled ability to get the best recruits to commit to the University year after year.

With the 2018 recruiting cycle in the rearview mirror, the Buckeyes’ coaching staff can now focus on the 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes. But what might be Meyer’s best skill is recognizing talent early on, giving the Buckeyes an edges in building relationships with the best talents in the country early in their cycle.

Ohio State has done just this, already offering numerous prospects in the coming recruiting classes—and it appears the hard work is paying off. Late Monday afternoon, one of the top prospects in the 2019 class listed the program among his top schools.

Four-star offensive tackle Harry Miller (Buford, GA / Buford) has a longstanding relationship with the Ohio State football program. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound OT was offered a scholarship offer to play in Columbus last summer and has found his way on campus more than once since receiving the offer, with the latest visit being Jan. 13.

Because Miller is viewed as one of the best in next year’s class, his recruitment is further ahead of many of those in his class and he has already figured out what schools he wants to focus on during the rest of his recruitment.

Current Top 5 pic.twitter.com/iYL8MSMell

— Harry Miller (@harrymiller76) February 19, 2018

Along with Ohio State, Notre Dame, Clemson, Georgia and Stanford all made the cut for his top five schools.

Miller is unquestionably one of the top talents in his class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 11 OT in 2019 as well as the No. 65 overall recruit. He is also the seventh best recruit from the talent-rich state of Georgia.

Ohio State will likely try and get him to take advantage of the new rules allowing prospects in the 2019 class take official visits in the spring. If the Buckeyes are able to do this, they would likely be viewed as the runaway favorite to land his services. As it stands today, the Buckeyes hold 67-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions.

Ohio State offers in-state star DE

While Urban Meyer has been able to successfully bring in top recruiting classes since his time at Ohio State, one of the few recent struggles has been with retaining Ohio talent.

Year after year Meyer makes it a point that in-state recruiting needs to be stronger. Sticking with this idea, the Buckeyes have offered one of the top Ohio-born recruits in the 2020 recruiting cycle in defensive end Darrion Henry (Cincinnati, OH / Princeton.)

Wooo... I’m blessed to receive a offer from The Ohio State University #gobuckeyes ⚪pic.twitter.com/TDHKMoCh7s

— D Hen (@darrion_henry) February 19, 2018

Henry participated in the Under Armour All-American regional camp in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday and impressed those who attended the event.

Following the weekend camp, Henry visited Ohio State alongside two of his current teammates, 2020 linebacker Jaheim Thomas and 2020 cornerback Elijah Eberhardt, who also attended the Under Armor camp.

Had a great time at Ohio state will be back for sure! @ ohiostatefb ❤️ pic.twitter.com/QtTnI7znLw

— Jaheim (@JaheimThomas454) February 19, 2018

Can’t wait visit The Ohio State University tomorrow ❗⭕#LLWNF

— TheReal14❗️ (@ElijahEberhardt) February 18, 2018

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound has yet to receive a star rating on any of the recruiting databases, as is with most of the talents in this cycle. However, he has already been able to leave a strong impression on those scouting recruits. With his exceptional athletic skill set, it is likely that Henry will be one of the top recruits from Ohio, if not the best.

Ohio State will have their hands full in recruiting Henry as he also holds offers from Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Rutgers and Miami (OH).

The Buckeyes are the early favorites to land Henry, holding 100-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions, but again it is early and anything can happen in the world of recruiting.

Elite 2019 DT plans to visit Ohio State

The Ohio State coaching staff may be making a trip to Hawaii in the coming year, but it won’t be for a vacation - or at least not completely. Let’s be real, it’s Hawaii.

This is because one of top prospects in 2019 has shown interest in Ohio State. Five-star defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele (Honolulu, HI / St. Louis) holds 30 offers but has not yet received one from Ohio State—but that will likely change.

The No. 2 DT and No. 26 overall prospect in the class of 2019 took to Twitter Monday to provide an update on the schools he plans to unofficially visit. Included in that list was Ohio State.

So far, I will be taking my unofficial visits this spring to:
⭕️hio State Buckeyes
Alabama Crimson Tide
LSU Tigers

— FAATUI TUITELE (@tuitele87) February 19, 2018

After securing two of the country’s best DT’s in the 2018 recruiting cycle in Taron Vincent and Tommy Togiai as well as the No. 1 DT JUCO, the position is not one of much priority entering 2019. However, if the relationship between Tuitele and Ohio State continues to build, Meyer will ensure there is enough room for him to sign.

Currently, USC has the edge in earning a commitment from Tuitele, holding 75-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions, however this could easily change after spending time on some of the best campuses in the country.

LGHL Ohio State doesn’t actually have a point guard

Ohio State doesn’t actually have a point guard
Meredith Hein

usa_today_10627821.1519075543.jpg

The Buckeyes have dropped two games to teams that have been able to exploit their lack of depth at guard.

“Obviously it was a concern coming into the season, not only our depth, but our ability to manage that. We have to challenge our guards to make better decisions in some of those situations.”

-Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Ohio State basketball suffered its second-straight loss Sunday against Michigan and, with the losses, some serious cracks seemed to emerge in Chris Holtmann’s lineup. The Buckeyes don’t actually have a true point guard, and that lack of depth has had serious consequences over the last week.

C.J. Jackson and Andrew Dakich, both of whom would normally have been shooting guards, have filled the role of de facto point guard for much of the season. However, that position is not one which comes naturally to either player. Jackson has shown flashes of greatness this season, and Dakich has been a contributor in limited minutes as a grad transfer, but neither is meant to be a player who anchors the Buckeyes’ offense— something that the likes of Michigan and Penn State have been able to exploit in their recent wins.

Both Michigan and Penn State are good teams that the Buckeyes had to face on the road, so it was expected that Ohio State would have tough matchups regardless. However, both opponents were able to capitalize on the lack of depth at the point guard spot. Ohio State had just eight assists Sunday against Michigan, with none from players at the point guard position. Versus Penn State, Jackson and Dakich had just three combined. Neither guard has been shooting well in their last two outings either. Jackson had a team-high 13 points against Penn State last week, but managed just three at Michigan. Dakich didn’t score a single point in either game.

Still, all hope is not lost for the Buckeyes. They are a lock for the NCAA Tournament and, despite being out of the top spot in the Big Ten, should have a high seed in the conference tournament. That means that Holtmann has time to make adjustments and shift his strategy--something that he has been able to do successfully all season.

“But Ohio State has also invested in some talented behind-the-scenes staff members who are tasked with reinforcing that message in different ways--from a presence on social media all the way down to unusual graphics edits that feature the recruits and make it easier to picture them in scarlet and grey.”

-Austin Ward, Land of 10

Urban Meyer and company have built up one of the most extensive and powerful recruiting pipelines in college football over the past several years, leading to some of the top recruiting classes in program history. While their on-the-field success has been the main factor leading to recruits choosing the program (along with the chance to win national titles and go on to the NFL, all while receiving a world-class education and mentoring through programs like “Real Life Wednesdays”), Ohio State has been highly successful at marketing its football program to recruits in new and innovative ways, including using social media and improved graphical elements in its materials.

For instance, the Buckeyes’ lineage of cornerbacks in recent years has been prolific. Starting with Bradley Roby and moving through Eli Apple, Gareon Conley and Marshon Lattimore (and, in just a few months, Denzel Ward), Ohio State penciled in four-star cornerback recruit Sevyn Banks to a graphic featuring the series of cornerbacks. The message is clear: Not only does Ohio State produce NFL-level talent, the program makes first-round draft picks at the position you play. Ohio State leveraged similar graphics to tout the lineage of Ohio State’s defensive line, going as far back as Bill Willis.

One of Meyer’s mantras has been the familial bond of brotherhood present throughout the program. One of the graphics this year featured not one, but two of the top-rated offensive linemen in this year’s recruiting class with the tag “La Familia,” demonstrating the brotherhood that begins even before players set foot on campus.

Finally, it doesn’t hurt that LeBron James, one of the top athletes in the world, is an Ohio State fan who is known to attend high-profile games. The Buckeyes leveraged James’ likeness in a graphic for four-star linebacker K’Vaughan Pope.

“The reality is that if you go through a power conference unscathed, then you’ve got one heck of a team. And by unscathed I mean...a loss or two.”

-Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann, via Kevin Skiver, CBS Sports

With two losses in their last two outings, Ohio State hoops is no longer in control of its own destiny in the Big Ten. After defeating Purdue last week in a battle of top-five heavyweights, Michigan State finds itself atop the conference standings for the first time since early January. And, with just two games left against Illinois and on the road at Wisconsin, it doesn’t look like Sparty will relinquish its hold of the regular season conference title this year.

Ohio State and Purdue sit one game back from Michigan State with the Big Ten Tournament scheduled to start next week in Madison Square Garden. Before that, the Buckeyes face a tougher-than-expected Rutgers squad tomorrow and Indiana later this week to close out the regular season. Purdue, meanwhile, goes on the road against the Illini before returning home to face Minnesota.

Michigan and Penn State, while three and five games back, respectively, suddenly have emerged as dark horses for the Big Ten Tournament title, with Penn State even in the conversation as a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament. Both teams were able to contain junior forward Keita Bates-Diop who, prior to the Buckeyes’ outing versus Penn State Thursday, had been the conference’s leading scorer.

Ohio State still has a shot at the conference title, but Michigan State certainly looks better than it did when the Spartans came to Columbus in January. The Buckeyes last earned a share of the title in 2012, when they were in a three-way tie with Michigan and Michigan State to conclude the regular season, and last won an outright championship in 2011. With tough, mid-seed competition expected in the NCAA Tournament, the Buckeyes will have work to do to get back on track to where they were just 11 days ago when they defeated Purdue in West Lafayette.

The Ohio State DC Alumni Club, Matt Brown, and other friends of LGHL invite you, yes YOU, to hang out with this this Saturday

Hi friends! Did you read about a few LGHL events a few months ago in Columbus and New York and wish you could come? Do you live in in the Washington D.C. area, or are willing to travel there this weekend? Because if so, well friend, you’re in luck!

The Ohio State Alumni Club of DC has joined up with Matt Brown, our former manager and current jack-of-all-trades for SB Nation, to host another get together. The event is free, there will be food and drink, cheap copies of Matt’s book, and a chance to talk about college football history, sports media, or whatever else y’all would like to talk about.

Even if you’re not interested in the book, it’s a chance to network and hang out with fellow Buckeye fans in the DMV. Everybody, whether you went to Ohio State or not, is invited to attend. Here are the details.

When: Saturday, February 24

Where: Tommy Joes, at 7940 Norfolk Ave. Bethesda, MD 20814

What time: 11:30-1:30 ET.

Are there gonna be books?: Friend, you bet. Matt will be there to sign and sell copies of What If? A closer look at college football’s great questions. There’s a few chapters that touch on Ohio State football history here, (like a world without Michigan in the Big Ten, or how the 2007 season would have gone differently if Pitt had beaten WVU), but also plenty for the college football fan interested in other conferences or eras. Between us friends, it’ll be a little cheaper for you to buy the book here, rather than online, or at the few DC bookstores that are carrying it.

Is this the last scheduled meetup? As of right now, yes, although there’s a chance we may do one in Chicago later this summer. But if there’s interest, we may host more meetups that have nothing to do with books this year as well.

Should be fun. Hope to see y’all there!

Losses to Penn State and Michigan in the past week have dropped the Buckeyes from the top-10.

It was a rough week on the hardwood for the Ohio State Buckeyes. On Feb. 15, the Chris Holtmann-coached squad suffered their second loss this season in conference play to Penn State in a 23-point defeat on the road. Then, on Sunday, the Michigan Wolverines got revenge on the Buckeyes, toppling the Scarlet and Gray by 12, 74-62.

Those two losses have dropped OSU from No. 8 to No. 16 in the AP Poll released today.

Running the table as the No. 1 team in the most recent AP Poll Top 25 are the Virginia Cavaliers. Right behind them are the Big Ten’s Michigan State Spartans. Even though Villanova beat Xavier on Saturday, the Wildcats are just one spot ahead of the Musketeers, with both team filing in again at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Duke, who came off a win against Clemson on Sunday, rounds out the top-5.

Joining the Buckeyes and Spartans in the Top 25 from the Big Ten are Purdue (No. 9) and Michigan (No. 17).

Middle Tennessee State, who shows up at No. 24, cracked the AP Poll for the first time in school history.

Here’s this week’s full poll:
