LGHL Staying sharp between the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments will be a challenge for Ohio State

Staying sharp between the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments will be a challenge for Ohio State

The nearly two-week break will help Ohio State recharge their batteries, but could make them rusty for the Big Dance.

“We definitely can’t take too much time during these breaks because other teams are still playing. We just have to physically stay fit, and mentally [sharp] more important than anything because at this point, we’re in as much shape as we’re going to get in for the season.”

-Ohio State guard C.J. Jackson via Nicholas Piotrowicz, The Toledo Blade

With the Big Ten having to shift their conference tournament to a week earlier than normal— so that they could play at Madison Square Garden— Ohio State will have about two weeks off in between the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. The break could be a gift or a curse for the Buckeyes.

The time off should help an Ohio State team that has struggled with depth all year long, and hopefully give the Buckeyes some fresh legs heading into the NCAA Tournament. The downside of having so much time off is that Ohio State will need to find ways to stay sharp and focused for the Big Dance.

Head coach Chris Holtmann does have a plan on how to handle the conference tournament being earlier than normal. When Holtmann was at Gardner-Webb, they had an early conference tournament, but that squad only went to the CIT and not the NCAA Tournament. Holtmann also picked former Butler head coach Brad Stevens’ brain about how to handle the break, as Stevens coached Butler when they were in the Horizon League, which had a considerable amount of time in between their conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

If Ohio State is able to handle the long break with a deep NCAA Tournament run, it would be the capper on an incredible first season for Holtmann with the Buckeyes. After being projected to finish in the bottom third of the Big Ten, Ohio State defied expectations to head into the Big Ten Tournament as the second seed. Now the Buckeyes will face their biggest challenge, as the pressure will be ramped up to a level that they didn’t see in the regular season.

“The deeper teams this time of the year, they are a little more difficult to prepare for. Hopefully we’ll have some guys step up.”

-Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

There’s no denying that Ohio State didn’t look like the same team in their final four games of the year when they lost to Penn State and Michigan, and needed double overtime to defeat Indiana in the regular season finale. Depth was a concern coming into the season for the Buckeyes, with a number of players from the past few years transferring out of the program. A shorter bench could be the undoing of Ohio State in the Big Ten or NCAA Tournament.

If the Buckeyes have designs on winning this weekend’s Big Ten Tournament, they’ll need to win three games in three days. At least Ohio State has a little experience playing a number of games in a short span, as in November they played three games in four days out in Portland at the PK80 Classic. A lot more will be on the line this weekend in New York City, with the Buckeyes battling to impress the selection committee to earn as high of a seed as possible for the NCAA Tournament in two weeks.

With the attention Keita Bates-Diop will draw, Ohio State is going to need a few players to step up if they want to make a deep run in either of their postseason tourneys. A lot has been asked of Bates-Diop this year, and it looks like the heavy load might be catching up to him. In his last five games, the redshirt junior is averaging just 14.2 points per game, after averaging 21.4 points per game in his first 13 conference games. At least Bates-Diop will have some time off after the Big Ten Tournament to recharge his batteries before heading into the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s kinda difficult cause as much as you want to have a great performance at the Big Ten’s it’s important. But the endgame is the NCAA tournament. So, we can’t dial back our training too much to peak for Big Ten’s because we still have twelve days until NCAA’s start.”

-Ohio State wrestling associate head coach J Jaggers via Skylar Rogers, The Lantern

This weekend, Ohio State will get a big test ahead of wrestling’s NCAA Tournament, which will take place in just under two weeks, as they head to East Lansing for the Big Ten Tournament. The conference championship tournament will feature 11 teams ranked inside the top 25. The Buckeyes finished the regular season as the second-ranked squad in the country, but they still have plenty of unfinished business.

While there are plenty of storylines heading into this weekend for the Buckeyes, the biggest one is whether or not Kyle Snyder will get to avenge his lone loss of the season. On Feb. 11th, Snyder lost his first match in three years to Michigan’s Adam Coon. It’s very likely that Snyder and Coon’s paths will cross to determine the Big Ten heavyweight champ.

Aside from Snyder, there are a number of other Buckeyes to keep an eye on. Joey McKenna comes into the Big Ten Tournament as the top seed in the 141-pound class, while Kollin Moore sits atop the 197-pound class. Ohio State has a trio of wrestlers ranked second heading into the tournament, with Luke Pletcher at 133 pounds, Bo Jordan at 174 pounds, and Myles Martin at 184 pounds.

Head coach Tom Ryan believes we haven’t seen the best from his team yet, and this weekend would be the perfect time for his wrestlers to show what they have to offer. Not only would bringing home a conference title be quite the accomplishment against this competition, but it would build plenty of momentum for a potential national title run.

But the Buckeye is also the second-shortest quarterback to compete.

Quarterback hand size is a BIG deal at the NFL Combine, and people make way too much about a quarter-of-an-inch difference between prospects. Regardless, with the players undergoing their measurements on Thursday, Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett can rest a little easier sitting among the top of the class.

Barrett’s hands measured 9 7/8”, good to tie (with UCLA’s Josh Rosen) for third biggest among the quarterbacks competing at the Combine. Sitting in the No. 1 spot was Wyoming’s Josh Allen (10 1/8”) and Nebraska’s Tanner Lee (10”) was second.

Hand size isn’t everything though, and unfortunately, the Buckeye’s other measurements aren’t doing him any favors. An oft-repeated storyline around the NFL Draft is about a quarterback’s height. You would think that the narrative would have been squashed given the success of shorter QBs like Drew Brees and Russell Wilson, but it has not. Barrett should definitely use those two as examples during his interviews with teams, as he measured as the second-shortest passer at the combine -- taller than only Baker Mayfield. (Hey, at least Barrett could best the Sooner one more time.)

What does all this mean? Probably not much, but scouts seem to really care about these things.

BOOOOM! March is coming in like a recruiting lion.

Slow starts on the recruiting trail aren’t particularly new to Ohio State under Urban Meyer. Back in the 2015 recruiting cycle, the Buckeyes had several silent months early on, and it wasn’t until Joe Burrow committed in May that the class really got going. Urban Meyer would like to avoid a repeat this season, and that effort just got a huge boost, as Mentor, OH tackle Ryan Jacoby announced his commitment to Ohio State on Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

⭕pic.twitter.com/BkPXwbVsU8

— Ryan Jacoby (@Ryan_Jacoby) March 1, 2018

Jacoby, a 6-foot-5, 270 pound do-it-all lineman is the second member of Ohio State’s 2019 class, as he joins fellow offensive lineman Doug Nester, a tackle from West Virginia. Jacoby is ranked by 247Sports as the 353rd best player nationally, 39th best tackle, and 10th best player in Ohio.

While his rankings aren’t super lofty right now (though they certainly aren’t anything to complain about), he’s just now growing into his frame, and could be in for a massive senior season, and a pretty big recruiting bump around November, after all of the camps and games are over.

Jacoby held offers from Oregon, West Virginia, Michigan State, Michigan, and Penn State, among others, and has received a ton of attention in the past few months after a great junior season. While the Big Ten trio of Michigan State, Penn State and Michigan certainly expressed interest in Jacoby, this was always a case of when, rather than if he would commit to the home-state Buckeyes.

Jacoby visited Columbus just a couple of weeks ago, on February 10, and knew he’d be announcing his commitment to the Buckeyes just shortly after, when given the green light by Meyer and Greg Studrawa, and apparently, today was that day.

In Jacoby, the Buckeyes are getting a versatile, impressive athlete, with good feet, and a very good core. He’s fairly inexperienced in pass protection (to be expected with high school linemen), but his ceiling is pretty much sky-high when he gets in a college weight program, and starts to learn from an extremely talented coach like Studrawa. Buckeye fans should be very excited about this newest commitment.

Even though the Buckeyes are the two-seed, they have the fourth best odds.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are back in action on Friday. This time around, they’ll be playing in the famed Madison Square Garden, the site of this year’s Big Ten Tournament.

Bovada, one of the leading online sportsbooks, issued odds for the Big Ten Tournament—and there are some surprises. Ohio State, the No. 2-seed, has 15-to-2 odds (the fourth best) to walk out of New York City as conference champions.

Purdue, the No. 3-seed, has the best odds at the moment (8-to-5) to win the conference tournament. Behind the Boilermakers are the Michigan State Spartans with a 33-to-20 odds. No. 5-seed Michigan, who plays No. 12-seed Iowa later today, has the third best odds at 11-to-2.

Last season, the Wolverines won the whole enchilada after being the No. 8-seed.

Below is the complete set of odds for who Bovada thinks will be Big Ten Tournament champions.

On Wednesday night, the tournament started with Rutgers, the last place seed, defeating No. 11-seed Minnesota; also, Iowa took down No. 13-seed Illinois. The Big Ten Network will broadcast the conference tournament up until the semifinals on Saturday. From there, CBS will broadcast the games, including the tournament championship game on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET.

The former Buckeye player and assistant is enjoying his first NFL Combine as a head coach.

After years of rising up the ranks as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots and then with the Houston Texans, it was only a matter of time before former Ohio State football player and eventual assistant coach Mike Vrabel would end up with his own head coaching gig. He finally got that opportunity following the 2017 season, when he was hired on to lead the Tennessee Titans.

Vrabel is attending his first NFL Combine as the head coach of an NFL team, and he’s embracing the opportunities that opens up in regards to meeting with players and media. Despite attending the past few years, Vrabel said that in terms of observations and analysis, it was pretty similar to years past. However, he added that the biggest difference was having to give a press conference and do media interviews.

During his time with the media on Wednesday, the new head coach talked about the importance of getting face-to-face time with prospects.

“This is the best part of the job, when you can actually talk to players. That’s why you coach. You don’t coach to hang out with other coaches. That doesn’t excite me at all.”

The Buckeye has always been a players’ coach, and he earned the respect of Buckeye Nation when he joined the coaching staff during the #TattooGate fiasco in 2011. During his first press conference as the Titans new head coach, Vrabel even talked about his interview with Urban Meyer, and how it went so badly that he was actually asked to do it again. Thankfully, Meyer saw his potential, and Vrabel has since embraced learning how to be a teacher to his players.

“You better have a teaching style that’s able to stimulate them, as well as get your message across to them in different ways. Understanding that they learn differently – some guys need walkthroughs, some guys love to watch film, some guys love to get on the board. I think that was the thing that I learned the most at Ohio State.”

His commitment to the game and to his players goes well beyond what happens on the field and in the locker room. Vrabel is personally invested in bettering the people around him, and takes his responsibility to do so very seriously.

“I enjoy having interactions with players, trying to make them better, trying to make them better people, trying to make them better husbands and fathers, trying to share the lessons that I’ve learned along the way, help through the mistakes or pitfalls or issues that they come across as a player.”

The head coach noted on Wednesday that this draft class is particularly important, given his time on the recruiting trail for Ohio State.

“I was at a lot of these guys’ high schools, I was in a lot of these guys’ homes, I recruited a lot of these players. Just because this is kind of the window, four years since I’ve been at Ohio State, this is that fifth year, so there’s a lot of guys that as they’re coming through the interview process, that I saw in high school.”

This may be Vrabel’s first chance as a head coach, but he’s had some of the best mentors a guy could hope for to prepare him for the position. Aside from the obvious influence of Bill Belichick — both to Vrabel as a player and assistant — the new Titans coach also cited being “lucky to play for John Cooper at Ohio State” and getting “to work under and for Urban Meyer” as meaningful moments to get him to where he is now.

Can a Buckeye tight end finally make it in the NFL as a pass-catcher?

The tight end position at Ohio State hasn’t been utilized in a way that makes it easy for NFL scouts to assess talent. Over the past few draft classes, the Buckeyes have had Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett representing that position group in the NFL, but that probably hasn’t done much to bolster confidence. Marcus Baugh is hoping to change the narrative surrounding Buckeye tight ends, and his first chance will come at the 2018 NFL Combine.

It’s no surprise that Urban Meyer likes his tight ends to be dominant pass blockers. It’s part of the reason that players like Heuerman and Vannett got drafted in the first place. But, without significant in-game experience with route running and receiving, those blocking skills haven’t translated to offensive weapons in the NFL.

Baugh finished his Ohio State career ranked as the No. 9 tight end in receptions (55) and No. 7 in tight end touchdowns (8) in program history. Those minimal stats being among the Top 10 in the school record book pretty much says it all. The Buckeye played in 52 games (starting 29) during his four years in Columbus, but he really started to shine in 2017.

His senior campaign included being one of only two players to catch a pass in every game in 2017. Going back even further, Baugh caught a pass in 23 of his last 24 games as a Buckeye. He finished his senior season with a career-high 28 receptions for 303 yards and five touchdowns. He also claimed the game-winning TD against Penn State (going 16 yards to take the lead with 1:48 left to play) and the game-tying score against Michigan.

Scouting Report

Here’s what the pros are saying in his NFL Combine Scouting Report:

STRENGTHS: Able to post up defenders and hold them off to pry a better throwing window open. Has some open field talent with the ball in his hand after the catch. Able to leap over tacklers who try and go low. Long strides will start to create distance from coverage as route progresses. Has the necessary footwork to get himself into position to wall off his assignment. Unfurls his long arms into defender’s chest and can create space between them. Has the athletic ability and agility to get into proper positioning to mirror as a screen blocker.

WEAKNESSES: Gawky and awkward in his movement. Has extremely awkward gait as a runner and is able to be re-routed. Slow to gather weight and change direction. Safeties read his routes. Takes too long getting to his breaks and making himself available to quarterback. Struggles to catch it cleanly and tape is filled with drops and double catches. Hands need to be catch-ready more quickly. Posted double-digit drop rate over last two seasons. Lacks play strength and tenacity as run blocker. Unable to sustain blocks. Can be overcome in pass protection.
Player schedule

  • Day 1 (Wednesday, Feb. 28): Travel, registration, hospital pre-exam, orientation, interviews
  • Day 2 (Thursday, Mar. 1): Measurements, medical exams, interviews
  • Day 3 (Friday, Mar. 2): Psychological testing, NFLPA meeting, media, bench press
  • Day 4 (Saturday, Mar. 3): On-field workout and position drills
