The Buckeyes look to bounce back from their loss Thursday as they head to Ann Arbor this afternoon.

Ohio State’s comeback win over Michigan back in December was unexpected at the time. It was the second conference game for the Buckeyes in a season full of scheduling quirks, and few had any gauge of how good Chris Holtmann’s squad actually was in his first year at the helm. It seemed like it was probably a fluke, and the 2-0 conference record that the Buckeyes carried for the rest of the month seemed likely to fall once Big Ten play started in earnest.

As it turns out, the win over Michigan in Columbus was not a fluke at all, but an indication of how good the Buckeyes truly would be this season. Now, eighth-ranked Ohio State looks to continue to improve its stellar conference record as it heads to Ann Arbor for its second matchup against the No. 22 Wolverines this season.

Despite the strong season up to this point, the Buckeyes seemed to fall apart in their most recent contest at Penn State on Thursday. The Nittany Lions doubled up on Ohio State in the second half and, despite a comeback that drew the Buckeyes within 16, Penn State ultimately pulled out a 79-56 win at home. Junior point guard C.J. Jackson led Ohio State in scoring with 13 points, while junior forward Keita Bates-Diop had 10 points and five rebounds. With the loss, the Buckeyes fell to 22-6 on the season, including 13-2 in conference play. Despite being tied with Michigan State atop the conference standings, Ohio State holds the tiebreaker over the Spartans after defeating them in Columbus in January and would have the edge in seeding in the conference tournament.

Michigan, meanwhile, is sitting at 21-7 on the year with a 10-5 conference record. The Wolverines are fifth in the conference standings, just behind a surprising Nebraska squad, with losses to Purdue (two), Northwestern, Nebraska and Ohio State. The Wolverines are winners of two straight, with their most recent victory coming Wednesday night over Iowa 74-59 in Ann Arbor. Senior guard Duncan Robinson led Michigan with 18 points on the night.

Michigan will be celebrating senior day during its last home game of the season this afternoon. Their remaining schedule includes road games at Penn State and Maryland next week prior to the Big Ten Tournament.

Jim Beilein is in his 11th season as head coach at Michigan, and has an overall record of 236-142 with a 109-87 conference mark. He has taken the Wolverines to the NCAA Tournament seven times, and is expected to make it eight this season. With their most recent win in December, Ohio State leads the all-time series with Michigan 97-76.

Numbers to know

13.3%

The Buckeyes’ three-point field goal percentage Thursday. Ohio State missed its first eight shots from three-point range against Penn State, and connected on just two the entire night. In his first game back after a three-game suspension, senior guard Kam Williams, who had previously led the Buckeyes in threes this season, missed all three of his shots from range. Comparatively, they allowed the Nittany Lions to shoot 45 percent from behind the arc. Both are a far cry from Ohio State’s average for the season. The Buckeyes, while not a prolific three-point shooting team, have connected on 35 percent of their shots from range this season, while allowing about the same from opponents. Though Michigan is not as strong from three-point range as Penn State, the Wolverines are still hitting greater than 36 percent from three.

63.5

How many points per game Michigan has allowed opponents this season on average. That’s best in the Big Ten and 10th nationally. Coincidentally, they’ve managed this mark despite poor field goal defense. The Wolverines allow opponents to shoot 44 percent from the floor and 35 percent from three. However, Michigan has had success in extending possessions, with the Wolverines averaging just 67 possessions per game, but getting nearly 1.1 points per on offense. By limiting the number of possessions, and being more efficient than their opponents on each one, the Wolverines have kept games tight and low-scoring. In fact, the Wolverines have won two games this year without scoring 60 points. Ohio State’s offense sputtered against Penn State, hitting its lowest point total of the season with 56. They will need to be far more efficient this afternoon against the Wolverines.

9

How many days the Buckeyes have to play their final four regular season games before the Big Ten Tournament begins. Ohio State opened the stretch on the road with Penn State Thursday before heading to Ann Arbor for this afternoon’s matchup. In two days, they are scheduled to return to Columbus to face Rutgers in their final home game of the season. Then, in the regular season finale three days later, Ohio State heads to Bloomington to face Indiana for the second time this season. The conference as a whole faced a condensed schedule this season in order to accommodate the Big Ten Tournament’s earlier start date. The tournament is scheduled a week earlier than normal due to its location at Madison Square Garden, and the fact that the Big East Tournament is taking place the following week at the same venue. The good news for Ohio State is that they will have a longer rest period between the end of the Big Ten Tournament and the start of the NCAA Tournament. The bad news is that there is a limit to how well a tired team can play to have a strong showing in the conference tournament.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

The redshirt junior forward had one of his worst games of the season against Penn State, but unlike in previous poor performances, no one else on the team was able to pick up the slack. Bates-Diop is averaging 19.6 points per game--now tied atop the Big Ten standings with Penn State’s Tony Carr after the latter’s 30-point performance on Thursday. However, Michigan is not discounting the Buckeyes’ leading scorer heading into this matchup.

“If Keita Bates-Diop had been (healthy) last year they’d have probably made the NCAA Tournament and been very good,” said Beilein.

While Thad Matta’s squad had some serious issues in his final season as head coach, there is a kernel of truth in Beilein’s words. Bates-Diop was a strong performer in his sophomore season, averaging double figures in scoring before sitting out most of his true junior season last year. In the few games he did play last season, Bates-Diop injected an offensive surge to a lackluster team. Now, he seems to be reaching his full potential, but he will need more performances like he had against Purdue, and less of what Thursday night had to offer.

C.J. Jackson

On a night when no one seemed able to find any sort of consistency on offense, only Jackson had any semblance of offensive firepower. Jackson had 13 points on 45.5 percent shooting. He’s been averaging 12.5 points per game this season, and leads the team with 4.1 assists per game. While turnovers were an issue for Jackson early on this season, he has cleaned it up in the last couple of weeks. He had two against Purdue and one each against Iowa and Penn State. Against a team like Michigan which limits possessions, Ohio State cannot afford to cough up the ball without getting to the basket. However, Jackson would be an advantage on the free throw line in a low-scoring affair. Along with Bates-Diop, Jackson is shooting greater than 80 percent from the stripe, and a tightly-contested game could come down to free throws.

Michigan

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman

The shooting guard is one of four seniors who will be recognized on senior day this afternoon at the Crisler Center. Abdur-Rahkman is the only member of the 2014 recruiting class who is still with the program. He has exceeded most expectations in his time in Ann Arbor after coming in as a two-star recruit in an otherwise highly-touted class. Instead of warming the bench, he has started three out of four seasons, showing progressive improvement each year. This season, Abdur-Rahkman is averaging 11.7 points per game, good for third on the team, but he has been picking it up over the last few games. Most recently against Iowa, he had 18. And while the senior’s 3.2 assists per game are not the highest on the team, his assist-to-turnover ratio of 6.0 is the best in the nation, and he has recorded just 15 turnovers the entire season.

Moritz Wagner

The power forward from Berlin has started each of the last two seasons in Ann Arbor, but almost left school for the NBA Draft following last season’s Sweet 16 run. His comeback has been good for Michigan, as Wagner is averaging a team-best 14.6 points and 7.3 boards per game. In the last outing against Ohio State, Wagner led his team in scoring with 14 points on the day. This season, Wagner has been the Wolverine’s best shooter, connecting on 53.3 percent of his shots from the field, including nearly 40 percent from three-point range. Unlike an Isaac Haas-type of player, Wagner is able to score both down low and from range. On a team that doesn’t have a lot of big men, Wagner presents a matchup problem for opponents.

Sean Romeo stopped 34 shots and Gordi Myer scored the shootout winner en route to the victory

Man did Ohio State need this one. With Michigan closing to within two points in the Big Ten standings, and only three games left going into today, Ohio State needed to start closing strong to hold onto their No. 2 seed. Today they grabbed the win in a shootout over No. 10 Minnesota and held serve with Michigan, while all but taking Minnesota out of any chance at the two seed.

Sean Romeo was deservedly the first star of tonight’s game, making 34 saves on 35 shots on goal from the Gophers, not allowing a single score until 10:27 into the third period. Romeo also made an additional six saves in the shootout alone.

Mat Robson was nearly his equal in net for Minnesota, stopping 38/39 shots, but allowing two to Tanner Laczynski and Gordi Myer of all people in the shootout to give Ohio State the win and extra point in the Big Ten standings heading into the last weekend of the season, in which they will take on Wisconsin.

The first period would be scoreless in this one, but unlike Friday night, Ohio State came out and acted like the more highly ranked team. On Friday, they were blown off the puck and significantly outshot until Minnesota finally drew first blood with a first period goal. In this one, OSU actually outshot Minnesota 10-8 in the first and 14-12 in the second.

Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, they couldn’t replicate Minnesota’s Friday success of a first period goal, but they did finally get one in in the second. Mason Jobst scored with just 34 seconds left in the second period, with Freddy Gerard’s gaining the lone assist on what would turn out to be Ohio State’s only goal in regulation.

This was all despite Ohio State only getting one powerplay opportunity in the first and Minnesota having two powerplay chances on three Ohio State penalties in the second alone, including 1:08 of 5-on-3 time. But Ohio State killed it off like they so often do with their elite penalty-killing unit. The Buckeyes came into tonight leading the nation in penalty-kill percentage, a full two percentage points ahead of No. 2, Army. Former Buckeye Tyler Nanne took a Minnesota penalty at 16:28 of the second, but OSU wasn’t able to pay that one off either.

The third wouldn’t be nearly as kind to the Buckeyes. They’d outshoot Minnesota again, 13-12, but the Gophers would score the lone goal of the frame with 9:33 left in the period. Brent Gates tied it up and that’s where the score would remain.

In overtime, shots were 3-2 Minnesota, but again, neither team would score. Romeo and Robson were engaged in a duel and it seemed like this one was going to go on all night. Because this is Big Ten play, it was allowed to and we went to the shootout.

That’s where Romeo would separate himself from Robson. He’d stop six of seven Minnesota attempts while Robson only stopped five of seven from the Buckeye.

Tanner Laczynski would lead it off for OSU and score, but on Minnesota’s first attempt, Tyler Sheehy knotted the shootout at one apiece. Then there was a dearth of scoring for awhile, much like this entire weekend series.

Ronnie Hein was stopped by Robson. Gates was stopped this time by Romeo. Sam McCormick missed. So did Brannon McManus for Minnesota. Sorry, come again, Kevin Miller. Try again when you have fewer consonants in your name, Mike Szmatula, said Sean Romeo. John Wiitala, robbed by Robson. Scott Reedy got greedy and got nothing out of it for the Gophers.

Enter Gordi Myer. He came in without a single goal on the season. Only eight assists to his record. Only 26 shots on goal.

So of course he scored the winner on Robson.

Tommy Novak would be stopped by Romeo and that’d be that. Ohio State came out with the shootout victory and the extra point. Take it and run.

The Buckeyes will look to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament next weekend as they host Wisconsin for the last weekend series of the regular season. Should be fun. Go Bucks.

The Buckeyes fought off Hofstra’s comeback attempt to move to 3-0 on the season.

The No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team held off a furious comeback from Hofstra Saturday to win 9-7 in Columbus. With the win, the Buckeyes move to 3-0 on the young season.

Despite strong play from faceoff specialist Christian Feliziani in his first two games, Hofstra dominated the circle early, collecting the first two faceoffs on the day. However, the faceoffs were about the only touches that Hofstra had in the first quarter. After a turnover, Ohio State got the ball on attack and settled its offense, leading to a score from sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire for his seventh goal of the season. Hofstra took the ensuing faceoff down for two quick shots against Ohio State goalie Matthew Smidt, but the Buckeyes were able to clear and, after a saved shot and turnover by Hofstra, score on a shot in transition from sophomore midfielder Ryan Terefenko midway through the first quarter.

Feliziani won the ensuing faceoff and the Ohio State attack held the ball on offense, nearly earning a shot clock violation. Leclaire then scored his second of the game on a man-up opportunity after a slashing penalty on Hofstra, assisted by junior attackman Gale Thorpe. Senior attackman Colin Chell added to the Buckeyes’ lead, scoring again just 12 seconds later on an assist from Leclaire. After another turnover from Hofstra, Thorpe scored the final goal of the quarter, putting Ohio State up 5-0 heading into the second.

Hofstra started to claw back in the second quarter. After exchanging several possessions, Hofstra scored its first goal of the game on a shot from Jimmy Yanes. They won the ensuing faceoff and connected on another goal from Ryan Tierney to pull within three. The Buckeyes finally recouped near the end of the quarter with another Thorpe score, but a man-up goal by Hofstra with 43 seconds remaining in the half narrowed Ohio State’s lead to 6-3 at the break.

Freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi opened scoring for the Buckeyes in the second half, connecting on a shot with 9:21 remaining in the third. After nearly six more minutes without a goal, things started to get tight as Hofstra scored two to close the third and cut Ohio State’s lead to two heading into the final quarter of play.

Hofstra wasn’t done yet, as they found the back of the net just 23 seconds into the quarter to pull within one. After trading possessions and shots on both sides, a goal from senior midfielder John Kelly finally gave the Buckeyes some breathing room with 5:38 remaining in the game. Chell added to the lead two minutes later to put the Buckeyes up 9-6 heading into the final three minutes. Hofstra managed one more goal with 49 seconds left, but the comeback ultimately fell short.

Leclaire, Chell and Thorpe led Ohio State with two goals apiece, with six Buckeyes scoring in all. Overall shots were 19-18 in favor of Hofstra, but Ohio State’s Smidt had 12 saves to Hofstra’s Jack Concannon’s 9. Feliziani finished the day going 8-for-16 on faceoffs. Senior defenseman Erik Evans led the Buckeyes in groundballs, collecting four of Ohio State’s 28.

Next up, Ohio State is scheduled to face Jacksonville on the road Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. ET.

Oh, I am not afraid of them I am just saying that we do not match up with them very well.. Tate, as I mentioned, is the only Ohio State player who is willing to play to contact. KBD does not like contact at all and does not play well when guys get physical with him. The Wesson brothers and Potter can play physical but they do not bring that much to the table. I think all of us need to remember what we thought about our team at the beginning of the season and I think that maybe the magical ride is coming to a close. I guess we shall see.

Kaleb Wesson doesn't bring much to the table? I disagree. I'll concede that I cursed Potter by giving him some praise.

Sean Romeo made 26 saves but the offense couldn’t get more than one in themselves

It was Ohio State’s first game since toppling No. 1 Notre Dame last weekend, however, the result wasn’t the same against No. 10 Minnesota. The Buckeyes fell to the Golden Gophers, 2-1.

Sean Romeo valiantly stopped 12/13 shots in the first period, but Ohio State only put five on net themselves, offering little offense to counter a Minnesota team out for revenge for OSU sweeping them in Columbus on December 8-9.

Ohio State would battle back and actually outshoot the Gophers in the third as they trailed by a single goal for the entire period, but couldn’t beat Mat Robson. They couldn’t find an advantage over Minnesota even down one in the second, as both teams sent eight shots on goal each, with both scoring once.

Minnesota scored the goal that would give them that lead they wouldn’t relinquish at 9:02 of the first, as Brent Gates scored his tenth of the year off a rebound.

Making the first even more galling for Ohio State was the fact that they were the only ones with a power play opportunity. (The shot differential could have somehow been even worse if that wouldn’t have happened.) Not how you want to come out when you’re the No. 6 team in the country trying to hold onto that No. 2 seed in the Big Ten.

OSU came out firing in the second, registering six of the first seven shots on goal, but then allowed seven out of the last nine, as each team ended the period with one goal and eight shots apiece.

Minnesota doubled their lead to 2-0 on a point shot by Jack Glover that found its way in past Romeo. Ohio State would answer, at least, at 18:27 of the second on a powerplay goal by Matt Miller on a one timer from the point.

He got the pass between the points from Gordi Myer and fired home his sixth of the year. It didn’t look like Robson saw it until it was too late. Freddy Gerard had the secondary assist.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) February 17, 2018

That’d be it on the offensive end for the Buckeyes, unfortunately. Making things more concerning than they would appear is that once again Ohio State had to rely on its special teams moreso than you would hope. That’s all well and good for a regular season, but anyone who’s ever watched playoff hockey knows that refs have a tendency to swallow their whistles, making even strength play even more important than it already is.

A team that relies on its powerplay to generate offense as much as Ohio State does may be in trouble in that case. They can’t just rely on a man advantage and the benevolence of the refs to score goals against conference competition.

Anyway, OSU would outshoot the Gophers 9-7 in the third, but fail to put any in past Robson. He stopped 21/22 shots and helped Minnesota kill 2/3 Ohio State powerplays.

Ohio State was outshot, despite having three power plays to Minnesota’s zero, 28-22 and were completely blown out of the arena the only time the game was tied. That doesn’t bode well for Saturday afternoon’s game, as the two teams will face off again at 5 p.m. ET.

Minnesota is now within five points of OSU for the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten, while Michigan has closed to within two. It sure looks like Ohio State needs a win here. We’ll see if they can get one.
