The Buckeye will move to Jacksonville on a five-year contact.

It was no secret that former Ohio State OG Andrew Norwell would be landing a huge new contract during NFL free agency, but the Buckeye will now be the highest paid guard in the league with a new 5-year, $66.5 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to Adam Schefter. With $30 million in guarantees, it’s no wonder Norwell is expected to accept the deal.

Former Panthers’ G Andrew Norwell intends to sign with the Jaguars on a 5-year deal for $66.5 million, including $30M fully guaranteed, source tells ESPN. He is going to become NFL’s highest paid guard - $13.3 million average.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 13, 2018

Coming out of Ohio State as an undrafted free agent, he slowly earned his stripes and became a pivotal player on Carolina’s offensive line. Norwell hasn’t missed a game since the 2015 season, and was voted to the Pro Bowl for his dominant effort in 2017. His breakout season came at the perfect time, and gave him a lot of leverage heading into free agency.

As much as the Panthers would have liked to keep Norwell on their line, it wasn’t entirely surprising that they couldn’t afford to keep him. Having already signed his counterpart to a big-money deal last season, they wouldn’t be able to match the $13.3 million a year price tag he was able to fetch.

Over at SB Nation, they are grading the moves made in free agency, and gave Norwell’s signing a “B”.

Grade: B

Interior line didn’t seem like a massive need for the Jags. They already had a pretty effective run game last year and the fifth-best sack rate, but this makes both of those areas even better. Norwell, according to PFF, was the best pass blocking guard in the league last year. One less excuse for Blake Bortles to stink.

Still, five years at $66.5 million and $30 million fully guaranteed feels like a luxury move.

Norwell has to be happy with the outcome, and will now be headed to a Jaguars team on the rise.

LGHL Hiring Thad Matta may be a risky move for Georgia

Hiring Thad Matta may be a risky move for Georgia

usa_today_9885995.0.jpg

Matta is a legend at Ohio State, no doubt about it. But is this the right move for both parties?

So, it’s sure looking like we’re going to see Thad Matta coach again pretty soon, huh?

After reports linking Matta to open gigs at Ole Miss and Pitt, the smoke coming from Athens, Georgia appears to be the thickest. According to one report, Georgia went ahead and already offered him the dang job.

We don’t have many unified editorial positions here at LGHL. Our writers disagree all the dang time, but I think it’s safe to say that everybody here likes Thad Matta. We are appreciative for the work that he did at Ohio State, helping launch a generation of Buckeye fans who actually had a reason to care about Ohio State basketball. He was funny, thoughtful, and left a slew of banners, trophies and happy memories.

I can certainly understand why a program like Georgia would be interested in a guy like Matta. It’s not every offseason that a candidate with his experience, his accolades, and his reputation finds himself not only on the market, but on the market and willing to consider a place like Georgia, a school that’s had only very modest basketball success.

However, I hate to be the guy to rain on the Thad Matta-redemption parade here.... but... are we sure this is actually a good idea?

This job is all about recruiting, after all

Just like in football, there’s plenty of untapped potential for Georgia basketball, if they’re able to take advantage of their recruiting potential. As a state, Georgia produces plenty of high-level basketball prospects, especially in the Atlanta area, but the Bulldogs haven’t done a great job at getting that talent to Athens; losing out on players not just to heavyweights like Duke and North Carolina, but to Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, and others. With the right recruiter, you could get some really good basketball players to Athens.

At times, Matta has absolutely been that right kind of recruiter. But, he was fired from Columbus in large part because that recruiting had fallen off significantly, causing him to either reach on players who simply weren’t as talented, weren’t the right cultural fits, or both. That steady erosion of talent was probably the single biggest reason for Ohio State’s decline over the last several seasons.

Now, the 50-year-old Matta would be moving to an area of the country where he hasn’t recruited as heavily (at stints at Butler, Xavier and Ohio State, Matta mostly, although certainly not exclusively, recruited the midwest), while still having to face rumors on the recruiting trail about his health, rumors that also helped limit his success. Like, coaches were telling kids Matta was doing to die.

That’s not going to get better in the SEC. In fact, it will probably get worse

For a while, #SECBASKETBALLFEVER was something to tweet when Ole Miss or Auburn lost to some directional vocational school in early December. We’d all have a good laugh at the fact that outside of Kentucky and like, two and a half other schools, the conference was very content to not really care about college basketball.

But then a funny thing happened; many SEC schools started hiring real coaches and spending real money on their basketball programs. And then wouldn’t you know it, the league got a lot better! Top to bottom, the league was unquestionably better than the Big Ten this last season, and you can sell yourself on the competitiveness of plenty of teams that missed the NCAAs. Frank Martin at South Carolina just made a dang Final Four. LSU, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State all have top-ten projected recruiting classes coming in. This is an experienced coaching cohort, and recruiting battles are going to be intense.

Also, and I don’t bring this up to be sanctimonious, but it’s worth mentioning that Matta’s reputation in the media and coaching circles is pristine. His unwillingness to carry the proverbial bag probably at least played a role in the diminishing recruiting returns for Ohio State over the last few years.

After battling rumors of declining health, to go into a region where he doesn’t have as strong of relationships, and one where there are programs involved in the FBI investigation for, let’s just say, playing to win when it comes to recruiting....well, that’s all a pretty tough situation, no?

Also, there are some non-recruiting reasons to potentially be concerned

Matta is unquestionably a great coach. His teams almost always play strong team defense, and it’s no accident that he sent plenty of former Buckeyes to the NBA, or, at least, to strong overseas leagues. But, the other credible accusation thrown his way over the end of his Ohio State tenure? Players didn’t substantially improve.

Exactly how big of an issue this was, or how much goes on his shoulders is credibly up for debate, but if you look at players who joined Ohio State from say, the 2013 recruiting class onward, you will find plenty of players that made similar mistakes as freshman and sophomores as they did as juniors and seniors, and few that took dramatic jumps.

So much of Matta’s ability to develop players, and overcome some of those recruiting disadvantages, will depend on who he hires as staffers. His coaching tree in college basketball is substantial, but the bulk of those branches were formed much earlier in his career. Will he be able to assemble the right staff at Georgia?

Of course, it’s entirely possible everything I wrote is wrong, and Matta kicks ass

After all, he already helped one football school reach huge heights, and he did a lot of that back when the Big Ten was one of the toughest leagues in college basketball. He hasn’t forgotten how to teach defense, or handle in-game duties, or build relationships with players. He could take this job, or any other job, and turn that program into a second-weekend threat in the NCAAs pretty quickly. He’s certainly good enough!

I’ll root for Matta wherever he ends up, if he decides he wants to coach again. I’m skeptical a place like the SEC would be the best place for the next step in his career, or any other job that demands elite recruiting in a territory where it may be especially cutthroat. It’d be a move that would probably be praised #online, but not one without risks, in my view.

As unrestricted free agents, there’s bound to be lots of talks and visits for several former Ohio State players looking for a new deal.

With NFL free agency getting underway on Wednesday, March 14 at 4 p.m. ET, there are several former Buckeyes vying for new deals ahead of the 2018 season. With the Los Angeles Rams re-signing LS Jake McQuaide to a 3-year deal, there are now seven former Ohio State players available this offseason.

Last year’s free agency frenzy surrounding Terrelle Pryor Sr. may dwindle a bit in 2018, but he’s still a very intriguing prospect, and is likely willing to accept a lower deal coming off of a not-so-great 2017 season. Running back Carlos Hyde, however, is coming off a very good, career-best season with the 49ers and is looking for his first big-money, long-term deal following his rookie contract.

Other Buckeye free agents include three Buckeye offensive guards, Alex Boone, Jack Mewhort, and Andrew Norwell, and two safety/special teams players, Tyvis Powell and Nate Ebner.

You can expect no shortage of rumors and meeting updates during free agency, and we’ll keep you updated with all the latest.

Also, the Buckeyes are closing in on a safety.

With spring practices underway, the Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff is busy preparing for the upcoming season. The Bucks are looking to replace multiple elite talents on the gridiron after losing multiple key starters to graduation and those leaving early for the NFL Draft.

However, head coach Urban Meyer has prepared for this moment by bringing in two tremendous recruiting classes in the last two classes. Keeping with this, the Buckeyes are working hard to ensure the 2019 recruiting class lives up to the standards set in 2017 and 2018.

Monday afternoon, the Buckeyes learned they are one of the favorites for one of the top talents in this years class. Four-star wide receiver Milton Wright (Louisville, KY / Christian Academy of Louisville) spoke with Dave Lackford of Rivals.com and listed Ohio State as one of his top five schools.

Along with Ohio State, Wright listed Alabama, Purdue, Kentucky and Georgia in his list. While Wright has not shut his recruitment down to schools not included in his list, he did mention the above schools are leading the way.

When talking about his relationship with the Ohio State coaching staff and on his thought on the football program, Wright said, “I spoke with Urban Meyer yesterday (Friday, March 9) and they stay in contact with me often.”

The blue-chip prospect is viewed as an athlete by most recruiting databases and is the No. 12 ATH in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings and is the No. 135 overall recruit in the class. He is also the No. 2 prospect from the state of Kentucky.

Ohio State is viewed as the favorite to land Wright when it is all said and done, holding 75-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions.

Wright also mentioned to Lackford that he will likely take advantage of the new college football recruiting rule allowing juniors to take official visits in the spring, including a visit to Columbus.

Four-star safety trending towards Ohio State

While it is impossible to accurately predict where high school kids will choose to continue their football careers at, the 247Sports Crystal Ball Rankings do a great job at separating the contenders from those with wishful thinking.

With this in mind, it appears that Ohio State is gaining ground on securing a commitment from a four-star safety. Monday morning, multiple recruiting experts selected Ohio State as their prediction to land Jordan Battle (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas.)

A look at the #CrystalBall predictions coming in this morning, including several picks for #Clemson https://t.co/AD4fYwo42q pic.twitter.com/bdOfn50F5j

— 247SportsCrystalBall (@247CrystalBall) March 12, 2018

Battle plays for one of the most prestigious high school football programs in the country and one that Ohio State has had plenty of success with in recent years. He is viewed as the No. 29 safety in the country as well as the No. 347 overall recruit in the class.

However, despite his lower ranking, he has been outperforming his recruiting ranking at almost every event his has participated in this offseason. Battle participated in The Opening Miami regional camp and recorded a 4.57-second forty and Luke Stampini of 247Sports listed him in his top five defensive performers at the event. If this continues and Battle has a strong senior season, his rankings will surely see a spike.

While there is still plenty of time between now and early signing day 2019, Ohio State is getting into the race for Battle relatively late. Battle received an official scholarship offer from the Buckeyes late last month, joining 20 other programs vying for his services.

That being said, there is a reason Urban Meyer is viewed as one of the top recruiters in the country. Proving this even more, the Buckeyes now hold 100-percent of the Crystal Ball Predictions for Battle, most of which came in Monday.

If Ohio State is able to get Battle to take an official visit this spring, they would have to been seen as the runaway favorite to land him.

The Buckeyes are planning to play four of their six NCAA Tournament games in Columbus, this season.

Coming off of their first Big Ten Tournament championship since 2011, the Ohio State women’s basketball team officially earned the right to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament this week, thanks to their No. 3 seed in the Spokane Region. The Buckeyes will square off against No. 14 George Washington on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

This season, OSU won the B1G regular season and tournament titles behind three-time conference Player of the Year Kelsey Mitchell. With a 27-6 overall record, including a 13-3 mark in conference, the Buckeyes finished the regular season ranked 10th in the AP Poll.

Not only will Ohio State host the first two rounds on campus, but this year’s Women’s Final Four will also be held in Columbus, just down High Street at Nationwide Arena. Fortunately for coach Kevin McGuff and company, his team is 15-2 in C-bus this season, only losing to now No. 3 Louisville in overtime in November and to Michigan in January.

Mitchell is unquestionably the star of the team, and she might be the best player in the program’s storied history. With 3,363 total points, she sits third all-time in the NCAA women’s scoring ranks, just 30 points behind Southwest Missouri State’s Jackie Stiles. Should the Buckeyes make it to the final game at Nationwide Arena, Mitchell would have a difficult, but legitimate chance, to catch Washington’s Kelsey Plum, who ended her career last season with 3,527 points.

However, in addition to Mitchell’s 24.5 points per game, three other Buckeyes average double figured; Stephanie Mavunga (16.5), Linnae Harper (14.6), and Sierra Calhoun (11.8). Mavunga is the only Buckeye to average a double-double, pulling down 10.8 board per contest.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish secured the No. 1 seed in the Spokane region. If the Buckeyes win their Round of 64 game against the Colonials, they will face the winner of No. 6 LSU and No. 11 Central Michigan. In the Sweet 16, Ohio State would face off against the surviving team from No. 2 Oregon, No. 7 Green Bay, No. 10 Minnesota, and No. 15 Seattle. The Round of 16 game for the Buckeyes would be in Spokane, Wash., so if they faced Oregon— or Seattle— it would likely be a veritable road game.

All games for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament will air on the ESPN family of networks.
