But the Buckeye is also the second-shortest quarterback to compete.

Quarterback hand size is a BIG deal at the NFL Combine, and people make way too much about a quarter-of-an-inch difference between prospects. Regardless, with the players undergoing their measurements on Thursday, Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett can rest a little easier sitting among the top of the class.

Barrett’s hands measured 9 7/8”, good to tie (with UCLA’s Josh Rosen) for third biggest among the quarterbacks competing at the Combine. Sitting in the No. 1 spot was Wyoming’s Josh Allen (10 1/8”) and Nebraska’s Tanner Lee (10”) was second.

Hand size isn’t everything though, and unfortunately, the Buckeye’s other measurements aren’t doing him any favors. An oft-repeated storyline around the NFL Draft is about a quarterback’s height. You would think that the narrative would have been squashed given the success of shorter QBs like Drew Brees and Russell Wilson, but it has not. Barrett should definitely use those two as examples during his interviews with teams, as he measured as the second-shortest passer at the combine -- taller than only Baker Mayfield. (Hey, at least Barrett could best the Sooner one more time.)

What does all this mean? Probably not much, but scouts seem to really care about these things.

BOOOOM! March is coming in like a recruiting lion.

Slow starts on the recruiting trail aren’t particularly new to Ohio State under Urban Meyer. Back in the 2015 recruiting cycle, the Buckeyes had several silent months early on, and it wasn’t until Joe Burrow committed in May that the class really got going. Urban Meyer would like to avoid a repeat this season, and that effort just got a huge boost, as Mentor, OH tackle Ryan Jacoby announced his commitment to Ohio State on Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

⭕pic.twitter.com/BkPXwbVsU8

— Ryan Jacoby (@Ryan_Jacoby) March 1, 2018

Jacoby, a 6-foot-5, 270 pound do-it-all lineman is the second member of Ohio State’s 2019 class, as he joins fellow offensive lineman Doug Nester, a tackle from West Virginia. Jacoby is ranked by 247Sports as the 353rd best player nationally, 39th best tackle, and 10th best player in Ohio.

While his rankings aren’t super lofty right now (though they certainly aren’t anything to complain about), he’s just now growing into his frame, and could be in for a massive senior season, and a pretty big recruiting bump around November, after all of the camps and games are over.

Jacoby held offers from Oregon, West Virginia, Michigan State, Michigan, and Penn State, among others, and has received a ton of attention in the past few months after a great junior season. While the Big Ten trio of Michigan State, Penn State and Michigan certainly expressed interest in Jacoby, this was always a case of when, rather than if he would commit to the home-state Buckeyes.

Jacoby visited Columbus just a couple of weeks ago, on February 10, and knew he’d be announcing his commitment to the Buckeyes just shortly after, when given the green light by Meyer and Greg Studrawa, and apparently, today was that day.

In Jacoby, the Buckeyes are getting a versatile, impressive athlete, with good feet, and a very good core. He’s fairly inexperienced in pass protection (to be expected with high school linemen), but his ceiling is pretty much sky-high when he gets in a college weight program, and starts to learn from an extremely talented coach like Studrawa. Buckeye fans should be very excited about this newest commitment.

Even though the Buckeyes are the two-seed, they have the fourth best odds.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are back in action on Friday. This time around, they’ll be playing in the famed Madison Square Garden, the site of this year’s Big Ten Tournament.

Bovada, one of the leading online sportsbooks, issued odds for the Big Ten Tournament—and there are some surprises. Ohio State, the No. 2-seed, has 15-to-2 odds (the fourth best) to walk out of New York City as conference champions.

Purdue, the No. 3-seed, has the best odds at the moment (8-to-5) to win the conference tournament. Behind the Boilermakers are the Michigan State Spartans with a 33-to-20 odds. No. 5-seed Michigan, who plays No. 12-seed Iowa later today, has the third best odds at 11-to-2.

Last season, the Wolverines won the whole enchilada after being the No. 8-seed.

Below is the complete set of odds for who Bovada thinks will be Big Ten Tournament champions.

On Wednesday night, the tournament started with Rutgers, the last place seed, defeating No. 11-seed Minnesota; also, Iowa took down No. 13-seed Illinois. The Big Ten Network will broadcast the conference tournament up until the semifinals on Saturday. From there, CBS will broadcast the games, including the tournament championship game on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET.

The former Buckeye player and assistant is enjoying his first NFL Combine as a head coach.

After years of rising up the ranks as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots and then with the Houston Texans, it was only a matter of time before former Ohio State football player and eventual assistant coach Mike Vrabel would end up with his own head coaching gig. He finally got that opportunity following the 2017 season, when he was hired on to lead the Tennessee Titans.

Vrabel is attending his first NFL Combine as the head coach of an NFL team, and he’s embracing the opportunities that opens up in regards to meeting with players and media. Despite attending the past few years, Vrabel said that in terms of observations and analysis, it was pretty similar to years past. However, he added that the biggest difference was having to give a press conference and do media interviews.

During his time with the media on Wednesday, the new head coach talked about the importance of getting face-to-face time with prospects.

“This is the best part of the job, when you can actually talk to players. That’s why you coach. You don’t coach to hang out with other coaches. That doesn’t excite me at all.”

The Buckeye has always been a players’ coach, and he earned the respect of Buckeye Nation when he joined the coaching staff during the #TattooGate fiasco in 2011. During his first press conference as the Titans new head coach, Vrabel even talked about his interview with Urban Meyer, and how it went so badly that he was actually asked to do it again. Thankfully, Meyer saw his potential, and Vrabel has since embraced learning how to be a teacher to his players.

“You better have a teaching style that’s able to stimulate them, as well as get your message across to them in different ways. Understanding that they learn differently – some guys need walkthroughs, some guys love to watch film, some guys love to get on the board. I think that was the thing that I learned the most at Ohio State.”

His commitment to the game and to his players goes well beyond what happens on the field and in the locker room. Vrabel is personally invested in bettering the people around him, and takes his responsibility to do so very seriously.

“I enjoy having interactions with players, trying to make them better, trying to make them better people, trying to make them better husbands and fathers, trying to share the lessons that I’ve learned along the way, help through the mistakes or pitfalls or issues that they come across as a player.”

The head coach noted on Wednesday that this draft class is particularly important, given his time on the recruiting trail for Ohio State.

“I was at a lot of these guys’ high schools, I was in a lot of these guys’ homes, I recruited a lot of these players. Just because this is kind of the window, four years since I’ve been at Ohio State, this is that fifth year, so there’s a lot of guys that as they’re coming through the interview process, that I saw in high school.”

This may be Vrabel’s first chance as a head coach, but he’s had some of the best mentors a guy could hope for to prepare him for the position. Aside from the obvious influence of Bill Belichick — both to Vrabel as a player and assistant — the new Titans coach also cited being “lucky to play for John Cooper at Ohio State” and getting “to work under and for Urban Meyer” as meaningful moments to get him to where he is now.

Can a Buckeye tight end finally make it in the NFL as a pass-catcher?

The tight end position at Ohio State hasn’t been utilized in a way that makes it easy for NFL scouts to assess talent. Over the past few draft classes, the Buckeyes have had Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett representing that position group in the NFL, but that probably hasn’t done much to bolster confidence. Marcus Baugh is hoping to change the narrative surrounding Buckeye tight ends, and his first chance will come at the 2018 NFL Combine.

It’s no surprise that Urban Meyer likes his tight ends to be dominant pass blockers. It’s part of the reason that players like Heuerman and Vannett got drafted in the first place. But, without significant in-game experience with route running and receiving, those blocking skills haven’t translated to offensive weapons in the NFL.

Baugh finished his Ohio State career ranked as the No. 9 tight end in receptions (55) and No. 7 in tight end touchdowns (8) in program history. Those minimal stats being among the Top 10 in the school record book pretty much says it all. The Buckeye played in 52 games (starting 29) during his four years in Columbus, but he really started to shine in 2017.

His senior campaign included being one of only two players to catch a pass in every game in 2017. Going back even further, Baugh caught a pass in 23 of his last 24 games as a Buckeye. He finished his senior season with a career-high 28 receptions for 303 yards and five touchdowns. He also claimed the game-winning TD against Penn State (going 16 yards to take the lead with 1:48 left to play) and the game-tying score against Michigan.

Scouting Report

Here’s what the pros are saying in his NFL Combine Scouting Report:

STRENGTHS: Able to post up defenders and hold them off to pry a better throwing window open. Has some open field talent with the ball in his hand after the catch. Able to leap over tacklers who try and go low. Long strides will start to create distance from coverage as route progresses. Has the necessary footwork to get himself into position to wall off his assignment. Unfurls his long arms into defender’s chest and can create space between them. Has the athletic ability and agility to get into proper positioning to mirror as a screen blocker.

WEAKNESSES: Gawky and awkward in his movement. Has extremely awkward gait as a runner and is able to be re-routed. Slow to gather weight and change direction. Safeties read his routes. Takes too long getting to his breaks and making himself available to quarterback. Struggles to catch it cleanly and tape is filled with drops and double catches. Hands need to be catch-ready more quickly. Posted double-digit drop rate over last two seasons. Lacks play strength and tenacity as run blocker. Unable to sustain blocks. Can be overcome in pass protection.
Player schedule

Will the most decorated Buckeye QB ever make it as more than a back-up in the NFL? (Hint: Probably not, but maybe.)

Well, well, well. One of the more polarizing players to don the scarlet and gray is now taking the next step in becoming an NFL quarterback. Despite his up-and-down career with the Buckeyes, three-time captain J.T. Barrett is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Ohio State and Big Ten history. He broke 39 records during his time in Columbus, and is now setting his sights on playing pro ball.

As the only three-time captain in Ohio State football history, Barrett’s leadership skills have never been in question. The locker room was behind him since Day 1, and he didn’t let the quarterback competition between Cardale Jones in 2015 affect how he led the team or performed when called upon. His level-headed approach saved the Buckeyes countless times from getting too far behind.

Barrett is also the only Ohio State quarterback to have ever beat rival Michigan (as the starter) four times. The QB totaled 44 starts during his collegiate career, and set a school record with 38 victories among them. He was named Big Ten Quarterback of the Year three times and set conference records for career total offensive yards (12,697) — besting Drew Brees’ prior record —, touchdown passes (104), and touchdowns responsible for (147) — among others.

There’s no doubt that he set a new standard among the Big Ten conference, but he also set an incredibly high bar for the future QBs at Ohio State, setting 35 school records. (Seriously, there are way too many to list, but they are all equally impressive.)

He may live on as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play for Ohio State, but there are plenty of Buckeye fans out there who will tell you it isn’t all about the numbers.

His career began by setting out-of-this-world expectations during the 2014 season; J.T. Barrett quickly filled the shoes of the injured incumbent Braxton Miller, and showed that he too could be dynamic both on the ground and in the air. When he went down during the regular-season finale against Michigan, he was still assumed to be the starter once he rehabbed ahead of the 2015 season.

But then Cardale Jones led Ohio State to a 59-0 win over Wisconsin for the Big Ten title, and then bested Alabama and Oregon on the way to winning the first-ever College Football Playoff.

Barrett and Jones would spend the offseason competing for the No. 1 job, but Meyer and co. messed up royally by keeping them in competition throughout the 2015 season — with Barrett usually playing second-fiddle until Jones threw an interception.

Barrett took the reigns back full-time in 2016, but, with a new team chemistry and very young receivers, he struggled in the passing game for much of the year. He was still a formidable rusher though, and calling a Barrett tuck-and-run play was eventually the new norm. He continued to improve through the offseason ahead of his senior campaign, and came into 2017 with a new air of confidence.

The receivers now had a year under their belt and were trusted more often by Barrett to make contested catches (or at least draw pass interference), which they usually did. But every now and again Barrett would throw the ball so off-target that it would make people wonder how he earned a scholarship in the first place.

Consistency has been a recurring issue for the Buckeye quarterback, but if you look at his full body of work, there’s no one that comes close to his production. Whether or not that translates to the NFL is yet to be seen -- although, some draft-niks are already throwing around some pretty big opinions about Barrett’s potential.

Mayock says JT Barrett has everything you want in NFL QB but high-level talent. Thinks he gets drafted late 3rd day, is ideal backup for a long time.

— Marcus Hartman (@marcushartman) February 26, 2018

Look, Mike Mayock may be the end-all and be-all of NFL Draft analysis, but sometimes he goes a little off-base. I don’t disagree with his analysis of Barrett, but at the same time: dayummmm, he really said it. Being an NFL back-up QB is not the end of the world, especially considering some of the successful NFL quarterbacks this season: Case Keenum, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Super Bowl Winner and freaking S.B. M.V.P. Nick Foles, even all paid their dues as backups.

My prediction is that Barrett ends up among the coaching ranks, sooner rather than later, but he’ll without a doubt get a shot to make it in the NFL. Where that shot comes from, and how long he’ll be able to capitalize on it, are the bigger questions heading into the NFL Combine.

Scouting Report

Here’s what the pros are saying in his NFL Combine Scouting Report:

STRENGTHS: Outstanding leader. Teammates love him and he handled the rotation quarterback issue with maturity in 2016. Runs to his size and has determination on short yardage and in red area when running. Good decision maker in zone read. Throws with touch to the perimeter and will change speeds to make his throws more catchable. Pocket mobility has improved over time. Willing to stand in and take the hit in order to deliver the throw. Leg strength allows him to fight through sack attempts and keep a play alive. Does a good job of looking safeties off of his deep sideline targets. Recognizes when cornerbacks are looking to bait him. Wants to win from pocket and will try and sit in the pocket rather than bolting too quickly.

WEAKNESSES: Operation time and ball handling are a little slow. Not a naturally accurate passer. Makes receivers work too hard. Ball placement can be a struggle even on swing passes and short throws. Completed a measly 28 percent of his throws over 21 yards this season. Seam curls come wide open and he will opt for safe throws in middle of the field. Misses opportunities to challenge safeties. Gets it out a step late on intermediate and deep throws. Halts progressions early rather than allowing route development. Three-quarter release makes him short in the pocket and allows defenders to maul his pass attempts. Release and arm strength are below average. Allows rushers to get on top of him.

Could a 2019 prospect follow in the footsteps of his former teammate?

After being on their recruiting radar for quite awhile, class of 2019 cornerback Adonis Otey finally locked in a full ride scholarship from the Ohio State coaching staff on Tuesday.

“Coach [Tony] Alford just told me to give him a call and I did. He offered me and he just told me to build a relationship with him moving forward.” The four-star prospect stated to Land-Grant Holy Land nearly 24 hours after receiving his opportunity to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

Blessed to receive an offer from Ohio State University #Gobuckeyes ⚪pic.twitter.com/5MNmKJKbEM

— Adonis Otey (@d1dizzle) February 28, 2018

“It feels great to be offered by them. The great tradition of sending defensive backs to the NFL is what comes to mind when I think of OSU,” said Otey about the chance to play for The Ohio State Buckeyes.

While Otey, who plans to visit Columbus this spring, just picked up his scholarship from Urban Meyer, Tony Alford, and company, he isn’t the first prospect from Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to earn an offer from the Buckeyes.

With former Blaze running back Master Teague now on campus as a true freshman with the Buckeyes, and class of 2019 wide receiver Trey Knox on their radar, Ohio State is definitely trying to build a pipeline to the Tennessee power.

Even though playing with familiar faces would be nice, the 6-foot, 175-pounder has a lot to think over in the coming months. With offers on the table from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisville, Michigan, Tennessee, and Virginia to name a few off his quickly growing list of potential landing spots, Otey isn’t ready to name any leaders.

“I’m not sure. I’m still looking, but it would be like old times suiting up with Master (Teague).” He said.

As a junior for Blackman, Adonis, the 28th cornerback and 309th overall prospect in the class of 2019, per the latest 247Sports Composite Rankings, ended last season with 22 total tackles to help pace the Blaze to an overall record of 9-3.
