Also, the OSU wrestling team maintains its team lead moving into the NCAA semifinals.

“If the Buckeyes try to go small against the Bulldogs, it’s likely they get pushed around like they did when Gonzaga handed Ohio State a 27-point loss back in November. The Buckeyes are a different team now, but Gonzaga’s advantage in physicality remains the same.”

-Bill Landis, cleveland.com

Following Ohio State’s 81-73 victory over No. 12 South Dakota State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament yesterday, head coach Chris Holtmann sardonically thanked all of the media members who made the No. 5 Buckeyes a trendy upset pick on the tournament’s first day.

Holtmann made it clear that the Buckeyes had used their perceived weakness as extra motivation heading into their first appearance in the Big Dance since 2015. However, going into the team’s opening round game, that wasn’t the only plan that Holtmann and his staff had in place.

Against the Jackrabbits, true-freshman Kaleb Wesson played only seven minutes and went scoreless, despite the big man averaging 10.5 points in nearly 21 minutes of action per game. Holtmann had talked openly heading into the contest that they would have to go small to beat their hyper-aggressive opponents. However, despite the fact that their Second Round foes, the No. 4 Gonzaga Bulldogs, made the third most field goals in the country this year, the Buckeyes will have to have a big game from their only true big man, if they want to slow down the Zags and advance to their first Sweet 16 since 2013.

The Bulldogs blew out the Buckeyes back in late November, 86-59, in what was the younger Wesson’s first collegiate start. Much has changed for both teams since then, but OSU will need to rely on Wesson down low to counteract Gonzaga’s pair of big men, Jonathan Williams and Killian Tillie.

Sophomore Micah Potter did not play in the teams’ first matchup, as his ankle injury led to Wesson’s first start. However, when called upon to play more than a handful of minutes, the Canal Winchester grad has shown the occasional offensive burst, which would go a long way on Saturday.

The other player who will be valuable down low is Keita Bates-Diop. Despite having a team-high 24 points against SDSU, the 6’7 forward did most of his damage outside, connecting on four three-point attempts. The Jackrabbits sold out to prevent the Big Ten Player of the Year from getting into the paint to create short-range opportunities.

For the Buckeyes to have a chance to avenge their worst loss of the season, they will need to find a way to be competitive down low, meaning it will be all hands on deck.

“The Buckeyes extended their lead over defending champion Penn State to 80 1/2-67 during the day session Friday at Quicken Loans Arena. Six Buckeyes will compete in semifinal matches Friday night.”

-The Associated Press via Fox Sports

After the two-session first day of the NCAA Wrestling Tournament, Ohio State held the lead in the team race with seven grapplers still alive. However, on Friday in the 197-pound weight class, OSU’s top-seeded Kollin Moore was pinned in just 1:30 by unseeded Kyle Conel from Kent State.

Despite the shocking loss for Moore, OSU still has six competitors moving onto Friday night’s semifinals; Nathan Tomasello (125 lbs.), Luke Pletcher (133), Joey McKenna (141), Micah Jordan (157), Myles Martin (184) and Kyle Snyder (285). Ohio State won the national title in 2015, and Big Ten rival Penn State has won every other year since 2011. Iowa’s won three times, and Minnesota won once to complete an 11-year stranglehold that the B1G has had on the national championship belt.

The Nittany Lions currently trail OSU 80.5 to 67 going into tonight’s evening session, with Michigan in third (59.5), and Iowa in fourth (53.5). The team and individual champions will be crowned on Saturday evening from Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena.

“No. 17/18 Ohio State battled back from an early deficit to claim a 5-1 win over CSUN Wednesday afternoon at Matador Diamond. The Buckeyes improve to 17-2 overall with their fourth straight victory while the Matadors drop to 10-18.”

-Ohio State Athletics

With all of the basketball and wrestling going on, it’s no surprise that it’s been tough to keep up with the Buckeye Olympic sport teams. So, let us run through a few big stories and give the full weekend schedule rundown.

The No. 17 OSU softball team upped their season record to 17-2 earlier in the week with three wins in California. They will continue their West Coast swing this weekend in Fullerton, Calif. as part of the Easton Invitational, where they will face Grand Canyon, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, and the No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners.

The Buckeyes will then return to the Midwest to open up conference play on Friday, Mar. 23 on the road against Indiana. And, as the season progresses, the team is currently scheduled for six games on the Big Ten Network. So, set your DVRs accordingly.

Sticking with the diamond sports, the OSU baseball team claimed a midweek sweep against UNC-Wilmington. The pair of road wins moves their record to 11-6 on the season, and sophomore Jack Vance picked up his first collegiate win.

After a 4-2 Spring Break trip, OSU has now ended their 17-game road swing to start the season and as of this publication, are currently hosting Cal State Northridge in their season home-opener.

Finally, en garde! Earlier this week, the OSU fencing team had 12 Buckeyes selected to the NCAA championships by the Men’s and Women’s Fencing Committee. A total of 144 fencers were selected to participate in the championships, which will be held at Penn State next week from Mar. 22-25.

From free agency to draft projections, there’s a lot of former Ohio State players making headlines.

This. Is. March.

Which also means, that for at least a couple of weeks, the daily focus isn’t so much on football, but rather on whose bracket has already busted and which team plagued by NCAA and FBI investigations is proving their haters wrong. (Hint: it’s not Arizona.) But, just because we aren’t focused on football, doesn’t mean that everything has been at a stand still.

From former Ohio State football players whose rookie seasons were derailed by injury to Buckeye veterans who are navigating free agency, there is still plenty to keep an eye on at the next level.

Here’s a little update about players getting new contracts, signing with new teams, and some looking to finally get a chance to make an impact.

What’s happening with Buckeyes in free agency?

Several former Ohio State players in the NFL were free agents heading into the offseason, and while some are still looking for a new deal, some others already found a new home — or new contract.

One of the top running back prospects available this spring was Buckeye Carlos Hyde. El Guapo had been with the San Francisco 49ers since being drafted in 2014, but will now head back to Ohio to play for the Cleveland Browns on a three-year deal.

Another top target, and Buckeye heading to a new team this offseason, was offensive guard Andrew Norwell. Playing on the final year of his UDFA deal with the Carolina Panthers, the OG will be one of the top paid players at his position thanks to a five-year deal worth $66.5 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Two other Buckeyes have signed new deals, but won’t have to make a move to a new city. Special teams guru Nate Ebner signed a two-year extension with the New England Patriots, and Pro Bowl long snapper Jake McQuaide inked a three-year extension with the Los Angeles Rams.

Available free agents out of Ohio State include WR Terrelle Pryor Sr., OL Jack Mewhort, and OL Alex Boone.

Were any Buckeyes traded or signed ahead of free agency?

Actually, yes. Thanks for asking.

Just after the final snap of the NFL regular season, a familiar name popped back into the news cycle: WR DeVier Posey was signed by the Baltimore Ravens. After a hiatus from the NFL, the Buckeye had found success in the CFL, and helped lead his Toronto team to a Grey Cup Championship win in 2017 — Posey earned Grey Cup MVP honors for his performance, which included a 100-yard touchdown. That record-setting play went viral and shortly thereafter, the Ravens came calling, giving the Buckeye a second chance at NFL success.

Another Buckeye also signed with a new team before the start of free agency, safety Kurt Coleman. After a two-year stint with the Carolina Panthers, the former Ohio State standout was cut in late-February. He wasn’t available long, and signed a three-year deal worth $18 million with the New Orleans Saints just over a week later.

Some teams re-sign players before they even let them hit the free agency market, like the Green Bay Packers did with center Corey Linsley. The Buckeye signed a three-year extension worth $25.5 million to stay as the front man to QB Aaron Rodgers.

Who is coming off IR in 2018?

This was a tough year for injuries to Buckeyes in the NFL. Aside from Ryan Shazier and his back injury, which shook the entire NFL, there were a host of not-so-small issues plaguing former Ohio State stars. (Shazier recently posted an upper-body workout video, proving he’s not giving up on an NFL come back, even if it won’t be in 2018.)

Some of the free agents looking for new deals will need to prove that they are healed after the 2017 season, with player like Jack Mewhort (knee) and Terrelle Pryor (ankle) finishing the year on IR -- Nate Ebner also missed the end of the season due to a knee injury, but he’s already locked in until 2020. Other Buckeyes who wound up on IR included Michael Bennett (undisclosed), Curtis Grant (knee), John Simon (shoulder), and Devin Smith (knee).

The rookies from last season had a particularly bad spell of injuries, beginning with Raekwon McMillan tearing his ACL during the preseason. Following him to IR would eventually be Gareon Conley (shin), Malik Hooker (torn ACL and MCL), and Curtis Samuel (ankle). Second-year phenom Taylor Decker also missed part of the 2017 season, but was able to come off IR and return to action during the second-half of the season.

Our friends from the ‘The Slipper Still Fits’ blog preview the team standing between the Buckeyes and the Sweet 16.

The calendar had already flipped to Friday, Nov. 24 in Columbus, but it was still Thanksgiving in Portland, Ore. Unfortunately, the Ohio State Buckeyes had little to be thankful for after their 86-59 shellacking at the hands of the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the PK80 Invitational.

Eventual Big Ten Player of the Year Keita Bates-Diop was held to just seven points on 2-for-7 shooting, and the Zags shot 58.5 percent from the field compared to OSU’s measly 34.5. Though that game was still in the early going for first-year head coach Chris Holtmann and his rag-tag collection of Buckeyes, it should still give Ohio State fans plenty of concern heading into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. For, even though OSU has gotten markedly better since late November, so have the Bulldogs.

To preview Saturday’s game, we spoke to our friend Peter Woodburn from SBNation’s Gonzaga blog The Slipper Still Fits, and while he acknowledges his inherent bias, he also paints a fairly bleak picture for what awaits the Buckeyes in Boise, Idaho tomorrow.

The Bucks and the Zags will tip off at 7:45 p.m. ET on Saturday from the Taco Bell Arena, and the game will be broadcast on CBS. The winner will head to next week’s Sweet Sixteen.

We also talked about the Ohio State side of the matchup for The Slipper Still Fits, if you want to check that out as well.

LGHL: Gonzaga has been one of the best scoring teams in the country this season, but on Thursday, UNC Greensboro held them to their lowest output of the year. Was that more of a case of being rusty, or something the Spartans specifically did?

TSSF: I think part of that is rust, I think the other part of it is UNC Greensboro has a legitimate top 30 defense. They also play with a unique 1-2-2 press, which pretty much meant that each time Gonzaga was finally getting the offense started, they only had 15-18 seconds left on the shot clock. It took the Zags a bit of time to get through that, and seemingly, by halftime, everything was good.

But then the shots just ceased falling. It is pretty easy to point out the abysmal three point (5 of 23) and free throw shooting (13 of 25). Credit to UNCG, because they hit some crazy big shots and applied just enough pressure to put Gonzaga on the brink. One thing Gonzaga has done well this season is just grind out games, however. And this is a team that was in the national title game last year, and 4/5 of the starting lineup was a key part of that team as well. The Zags have dug deep to win multiple games this season, and that is what they had to do. UNCG came in with a specific game plan, and they executed it well. Hopefully, the Zags got the wake up call they need.

LGHL: In Thursday’s game, UNCG was able to shut down some of Gonzaga’s best offensive weapons— Killian Tillie, Rui Hachimura, and Silas Nelson combined for just 10 points. However, Gonzaga was still able to find a way to win. Is there a key to shutting down the team as a whole, or do opponents just have to pick their proverbial poison and hope for the best?

TSSF: It is so impossible to shut down Gonzaga, because as you note, three of their players did rather little on the offensive end. Still, in the end, you have Josh Perkins with 16 points, Zach Norvell with 15 (and the game winning three), and Johnathan Williams with 19. The Zags are one of the few teams with five players averaging at least 10 points, and if you add in Silas Melson (who has 9.5 points per game), then that list shrinks even more.

The teams that have defeated the Zags this year have either shot the roof off the arena (Florida), played their ass off and squeaked away (Saint Mary’s), watched as GU played the worst game of the season (San Diego State), or just walloped them because they’ll probably win the NCAA championship (Villanova). There is no real recipe to beating Gonzaga, because no matter how many players you shut down, they have just as many waiting on the ropes to go off for 20 points.

LGHL: The last time that the Buckeyes and Bulldogs squared off, it was a blowout victory for the Zags in the PK80 Tournament. How has the team grown and changed since that November matchup?

TSSF: This Gonzaga team has come together in a way that I’m not sure a lot of people were expecting, considering what they lost from last season. Few people at the beginning of the season would’ve pegged this squad to only lose four games on the year, even in a down WCC. The impressive thing about Gonzaga is their ability to just hunker down and, for the most part, do what it takes to win. They don’t exactly do it cleanly or beautifully, but this squad has figured out how to do exactly what they need to do to win (sometimes not any more than that).

Gonzaga plays complete team basketball on both the offensive and defensive end. They don’t force a lot of turnovers, they just make sure there is a hand in the face on every shot. They have a few shoot-first players (looking in your direction Zach Norvell), but for the most part they will make the extra pass to get the better shot. There isn’t a weak cog on this team, and at the same time, there isn’t a player that is the key to making it all work either.

LGHL: Gonzaga is a frighteningly balanced team, with five players averaging double-figures (and another at 9.5 per game). What allows this team to be as balanced as it is?

TSSF: A lot of it starts with the guards. Josh Perkins is more of a pass first point guard, and Silas Melson is more of the defensive specialist. Both are willing to take their three point shots, and Melson especially will drive to the hoop at a moment’s notice. Neither player is going to hog the possession, however. That opens it up for the rest of the offense, especially Johnathan Williams and Killian Tillie down low, to get their looks. When Rui Hachimura comes off the bench, you immediately get an offensive spark. He is the most dynamic scorer on the squad, and offense comes rather effortlessly to him. It is a full-team effort for the Zags, and it is what makes them difficult to defend. You can lock down one or two players in a game, but it is hard to lock down five or six.

LGHL: Finally, what do you think is going to happen in the game on Saturday?

TSSF: Honestly, between the results of both of our two games, I have no freaking idea. The Zags entered the NCAA Tournament playing some of the best basketball of the season, and then they almost got taken out by the No. 13 seed. If South Dakota State doesn’t foul on those consecutive three point shots towards the end of the game, this story might not even go up as well. I guess that is the beauty of March Madness, or something.

I think that Gonzaga gets the jitters out and is able to advance. I also write for the Gonzaga blog so I am contractually obliged to say such things. Gonzaga is such a balanced team, and I highly doubt the Zags shoot as poorly from three point range and the free throw line again. On top of it all, the game is in Boise, Idaho, which isn’t that far of a drive from Spokane. I would expect it to be a pro-Gonzaga crowd, especially because with the No. 4 vs. No. 5, you don’t have a lot of those underdog bandwagon hoppers.

The NCAA Tournament continues on Friday, and there’s still a lot of upset-potential on the table.

Well, Day 1 of March Madness 2018 is in the bag, and even if your bracket has already gone up in a cloud of smoke (thanks a lot Arizona), you can at least hang your hat on the fact that the Ohio State Buckeyes have advanced at least one round in this year’s NCAA Tournament with a win over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. You’ll have to wait until Saturday at 7:45 p.m. ET to cheer on the Buckeyes again, but there’s still plenty of basketball to be played before then.

Tip-off for Day 2 of the tournament begins Friday, March 16 at noon ET, and every game is available via livestream.

Two more Big Ten teams take the floor on Friday afternoon, with the No. 2 Purdue Boilermakers facing the No. 15 Cal State Fullerton Titans at 12:40 p.m. ET (on truTV) and the No. 3 Michigan State Spartans taking on the No. 14 Bucknell Bison at 7:10 p.m. ET (on CBS). Both the Buckeyes and rival Michigan won their first round matchups on Thursday, and could see some inter-conference competition before the tournament's end.

Ohio basketball fans will also want to check out the No. 2 Cincinnati Bearcats as they face off with the darlings of the 2015 tournament, the No. 15 Georgia State Panthers. The Bearcats have their highest seeding since the Steve Logan days back in 2002. That game will tip at 2:00 p.m. ET.

OSU coach Chris Holtmann’s former team, the No. 10 Butler Bulldogs will face off against the No. 7 Arkansas Razorbacks at 3:10 p.m. ET. The winner of this game will have the unenviable task of going up against the winner of the Purdue Cal State Fullerton game... so Purdue.

Another night game on Friday to keep an eye on, is the No. 8 Missouri Tigers versus the No. 9 Florida State Seminoles. The winner of that matchup will go on to face the winner of the No. 1 Xavier Musketeers vs. No. 16 Texas Southern Tigers first-round game — which history would predict Xavier definitely winning. If Ohio State wins on Saturday, they would face the winner of that Xavier-Missouri/FSU matchup.

The last game that might be of unique interest tonight is the No. 6 TCU Horned Frogs and the No. 11 Syracuse Orangemen. The ‘Cuse had to win their First Four game against Arizona State on Thursday, so the expectation might be that they are an also-ran that just barely got into the tournament. And, while that might in fact be true, Jim Boeheim has a history of taking his team on improbable runs. So, anything can happen when the Orange are in the tournament.
