Former Ohio State center Billy Price hoping injury won’t effect his draft stock

Price’s injury during the combine has NFL teams a little concerned.

“I’m glad I did that. To hear it from me, to make sure I can set the record straight. I control the narrative and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to be fine. I can show you everything you want to see. It’s not as significant as everyone is making it to be.’”

- Billy Price via Alexis Chassen, SB Nation

Former Ohio State center Billy Price is out on a mission to let NFL teams know that the injury he suffered during the NFL Combine isn’t going to keep him out any longer than planned. Price’s timetable for a return to health is in June, which leaves plenty of time to be ready for the season’s start. The question now is whether or not the injury will cause Price to fall some in the draft. Originally looked at as a first-round pick after switching from guard to center last season, Price might have to set new expectations depending on how the draft goes.

The good news for him is he could end up in a better situation than before, and that might help his growth in the long run as he becomes a professional. Right now, Price is expected to drop into the middle of the second round, or even further, depending on what teams decide to do. All of the doctors he’s checked with have him coming back on time but it will be up to teams to have faith in Price.

“And, just for the record, Brian Snead and touted H-back Jaelen Gill aren’t even on campus. It also doesn’t account for Demario McCall, who figures to be involved in the running game in some capacity despite primarily looking like more of a slot receiver at this point. So, if any unit qualifies as having an embarrassment of riches, Ohio State’s collection of tailbacks has to be on the short list.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

Ohio State has a bit of a problem. It’s a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless. The Buckeyes have one of the deepest positions in the country at running back. For starters, you have J.K. Dobbins, coming of a Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate performance, and Mike Weber, who has rushed for over 1,000 yards himself. From there, you have Antonio Williams who has shown marked improvement over his spring and throw in Master Teague - an early enrollee - and just those four are enough to make any football program jealous. The real problem is that there’s only one ball to give and not nearly enough minutes for all of them over the course of the game.

Add to it that the Buckeyes are also expecting Jaelen Gill later in the year and as mentioned above, Brian Snead is not expected to be a slouch either. There’s no way you can really take carries away from Dobbins or Weber so it’s going to be a tough assignment for the coaching staff in action, but running backs coach Tony Alford has done a great job in the past of making sure his players get the time.

“I think Jeremy Ruckert might be the best tight end prospect that I’ve ever seen and recruited. His skill set is ridiculous. Now it’s a question of getting him ready to play.”

- Urban Meyer via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

There are five incoming freshmen that aren’t with Ohio State this spring that could still make an impact this fall, and Ryan Ginn of Land of 10 has them all listed. Offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere, running back/H-back Jaelen Gill, defensive end Tyreke Smith, safety Josh Proctor, and tight end Jeremy Ruckert all have the potential to see the field in 2018 and in expanded roles depending on how their fall camp goes.

Ruckert, especially, to me seems like he has a chance to stand out. With Marcus Baugh moving on, the spot is somewhat up for grabs but the competition has been fierce this spring.

Luke Farrell, Rashod Berry, and Jake Hausmann have been working all offseason for the starting job, so Ruckert will definitely have his work cut out for him. But if he’s as good as Meyer thinks he is, then he could be competing for that starting spot when it’s all said and done. And obviously, with all of the offensive line shifting, Petit-Frere could have an excellent chance at seeing some playing time as well.

Penn St. Series @ University Park, PA

BUCKEYES CLAIM SERIES SWEEP AT PENN STATE

Ohio State improves to 24-10 overall and 6-3 in Big Ten play with Saturday sweep in University Park, Pa.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.
The Ohio State baseball team picked up its first conference series sweep of the season taking both games in a doubleheader at Penn State Saturday at Medlar Field in Lubrano Park. Ohio State won game one, 5-1, before blowing out Penn State, 19-8, in the nightcap. The Scarlet and Gray claim their first Big Ten sweep since 2016. With the 3-0 mark on the weekend, Ohio State improves to 24-10 overall and 6-3 in conference action, while the Nittany Lions drop to 7-22 overall and 1-11 in league play.

"We won in different ways this weekend, which is great," head coach Greg Beals said. "We won a one-run game on Friday and we won a game with our bats today in game three. That speaks to our ball club. We are willing to compete for each other and we made sure we took care of business."

GAME 1 SUMMARY

  • The Buckeyes jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring a run in the third and four in the fourth vs. PSU left-handed starting pitcher Taylor Lehman. Jacob Barnwell sprinted around the bases and touched home plate in the third after a single to right center and two PSU throwing errors. In the fourth, the Scarlet and Gray went back-to-back after solo shots by Brady Cherry and Dillon Dingler for a 4-0 lead. Noah West hit a RBI double for the fifth run.
  • Ryan Feltner improved to 4-2 on the year, tossing six scoreless innings and scattered five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
  • Left-handed reliever Griffan Smith threw two innings of relief and gave up one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Right-handed reliever Kyle Michalik threw a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.
  • In the box score, Dingler was 2-for-4 with a home run, Barnwell was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and west was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two doubles. Cherry was 1-for-4 with a home run.
GAME 1 NOTES
  • Ohio State claimed its fourth straight win over the Nittany Lions in game one.
  • The OSU bats collected their 17th game with at least 10 hits.
  • The Buckeye pitching staff had a scoreless innings streak of 25 innings snapped in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Foppe extended his reached base streak to 17 games and hit streak to eight straight games.
  • Pohl extended his reached base streak to 13 and McGowan extended his reached base streak to 13.
  • Cherry hit his second homer of the year in game one. He has 11 home runs in his career.
  • Dingler launched his third of the season.
  • The Buckeyes went back-to-back in home runs for the second time this year (last time: Cowles/Romans, March 10, 2018).
  • Barnwell collected his fifth multi-hit game and West had his fourth multi-hit contest.
  • West had a career-high two doubles.
  • Feltner claimed his fourth win of the year and eighth of his career. He improves to 2-1 in Big Ten games.
GAME 2: OHIO STATE 19, PENN STATE 8

GAME SUMMARY

  • The Buckeye bats continued to make solid contact to start game two, putting up a four-spot in the opening at-bat vs. left-handed starter Dante Biasi. Dominic Canzone hit the first pitch of the game for a lead-off single. Foppe hit an opposite field single to right. A RBI double by Noah McGowan scored the first run. Conner Pohl knocked a RBI grounder for the 3-0 lead. Tyler Cowles had the big swing of the inning when he hit a moonshot off a 3-2 pitch against Biasi over the left field foul pole for his fourth home run of the year.
  • Penn State made it a one-run game in the bottom of the second after a three-run homer by Shea Sbranti.
  • Ohio State had another four spot on the board, this time in the third inning. Cowles knocked a two-run single, Cherry had a RBI single and also scored on a passed ball for the 8-3 advantage.
  • In the fourth, the Scarlet and Gray crossed the plate three more times. Canzone doubled, reached third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Pohl then rocketed a two-run shot into the right field bleachers for his fourth homer. Foppe had a sac fly in the fifth. In the seventh, a RBI double by Canzone and sac fly by Foppe made it 14-5.
  • Right-handed starter Adam Niemeyer improved to 3-2 on the year, throwing five innings on five runs, nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Right-handed reliever Austin Woodby threw two scoreless inning and struck out three.
  • In the box score, Canzone went 3-for-5 with two doubles, RBI and run scored, while Dingler had three hits too. Cowles was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, hit by pitch and four RBI. Foppe had two runs scored, two RBI and two walks, while Pohl homered in the nightcap.
GAME NOTES
  • Ohio State claims its first conference series sweep since 2016 today. The Buckeyes improve to 69-36 all-time vs. Penn State. The Buckeyes have won 10 of the last 11 meetings. Ohio State outscored the Nittany Lions 23-7 in the three-game series.
  • The Buckeyes bats claimed at least 10 hits for the 18th time this season.
  • There were a total of 12 walks combined in the game.
  • Ohio State had a season-high for runs scored in a Big Ten game (19).
  • Pohl extended his hit streak to 14 and Foppe to nine in a row.
  • Foppe extended his reached base streak to 18. Other reached base streaks extended Pohl (14) and McGowan (12).
  • Cowles hit his fourth homer of the year and seventh of his career. Pohl knocked his fifth of the season and sixth of the season.
  • The Buckeyes launched four home runs during the doubleheader and have 29 in 2018.
UP NEXT
Ohio State begins an eight-game homestand with a midweek game against Miami (Ohio) at 6:35 p.m. April 17 at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.

RANDOM NOTES FROM THE AROUND BALLPARK
  • The fire alarms around Lubrano Park were going off before the start of the doubleheader. It must have been because Ryan Fuelner [Feltner] was warming up out in right field.
  • The dugout went crazy when Barnwell rushed around the base paths and touched home plate in the third inning on the two PSU errors. He’s probably one of the fastest catchers in the Big Ten, but he’s still catcher. It’s always fun to see a catcher run 360 feet and score.
  • Great French Fries at the ball park. Extra crunchy. The OSU SID had some around the eighth inning of game one. You’re not you when you’re hungry for 18 innings.
  • It was a warm, beautiful day to start the doubleheader around 2 p.m., but that changed by the end of game two. The wind shifted from left to right and the temperature dropped around 31 degrees. That is just incredible. Weather man. Both radio announcers forgot their jackets. Unlike the road warriors that both of them are. See you back at Bill Davis Stadium Tuesday for the homestand.

The Buckeye center will finish his career as a New York Jet.

Former Ohio State center Nick Mangold officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, after missing out on the entire 2017 season as an unsigned free agent.

After 11 seasons with the New York Jets, the team decided to release seven-time Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold ahead of last year’s free agency. He’s only missed significant playing time once in his career — seven games in 2016 — but due to his age and price tag, wasn’t able to sign with another team to play during in 2017.

Now, the former Buckeye is officially hanging up his cleats,..

I DECLARE RETIREMENNNTTTTTTT!

I will be signing a one day deal with @nyjets next week so I can retire a Jet.

Thank you to all!

— Nick Mangold (@nickmangold) April 17, 2018

It was reported early on during last year’s free agency, that teams were interested in Mangold switching positions from center to guard, but the Buckeye was holding out hope he’d be able to keep snapping the ball. Initially pegged to receive over $9 million for the 2017 season, the Jets releasing Mangold was predominantly a financial decision.

The Buckeye learned about his release while at Disney World and posted a perfect meme for the occasion.

Aaaaannnnddddd now I'm a free agent. #ThatEscalatedQuickly pic.twitter.com/ebm5jusZkm

Mangold was a all-star on and off the field during his NFL career, and will go down as one of the greats to ever play the position.

LGHL Ohio State makes the cut for elite CB

Ohio State makes the cut for elite CB
Dan Hessler

8196136.0.jpg

Elite Texas cornerback Erick Young included the Buckeyes among his top schools.

Since Urban Meyer has held the reigns as head coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, the program has been churning out NFL-caliber defensive backs year in and year out. With the Buckeyes likely sending another First Round corner to the NFL again this year, Meyer and Ohio State hold as strong of a case as any to be known as “DBU.”

However, constantly sending talent in one area of the game means that Ohio State needs to constantly be looking for the next great CB. This doesn’t appear to be much of a problem though, as the Buckeyes are once again in good standing for one of the country’s premier CBs in 2019 Texas native Erick Young (Richmond, TX / Fort Bend Bush.)

Young is a four-star CB and is viewed as one of the best at his position in this year’s recruiting cycle. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have Young listed as the No. 9 CB and the No. 100 overall recruit despite position.

The blue-chip prospect is one of the most sought after recruits in the country, already holding a reported 27 offers heading into his senior season of high school football. Despite an incredible list of suitors, Young has narrowed down his selections to six schools—and Ohio State made the cut.

pic.twitter.com/dHcgNEoPyK

— Erick Young ⁴ (@Fvmous_ey) April 16, 2018

Ohio State has some stiff competition in securing a commitment from Young as Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, USC and TCU all made the cut alongside the Buckeyes.

Ohio State’s inclusion in Young’s top six schools was somewhat surprising as he has yet to visit the school, but to Meyer’s credit, the Buckeyes made the cut over presumed contenders Texas and LSU.

Young used his first official visit this last weekend at Texas A&M, the current favorite to earn his commitment. Because of this, if the Buckeyes are to become a legitimate threat to the Aggies, they will almost certainly have to get him on campus in the near future. That being said, making his top six is another strong step in the right direction.

Ohio State visits with elite 2019 guard

What Chirs Holtmann has been able to accomplish in just one season as head coach for the Buckeye basketball program is nothing short of spectacular. He was able to provide a late boost to last year’s recruiting class when he brought Kyle Young with him from Butler and has since shown that recruiting is one of his strong suits.

Last week Holtmann was able to secure a commitment from one of the top recruits in the country and more importantly, one from within state borders in Alonzo Gaffney. The five-star prospect was the Holtmann’s first commitment for the 2019 recruiting class and he is hard at work trying to secure his second.

As first reported by Rivals.com National Basketball Analyst Corey Evans, Holtmann wrapped up an in-home visit with one of the top guards in the country on Monday in Harlond Beverly (Southfield, MI / Southfield Christian School.)

Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann is completing an in-home visit today with Rivals150 junior Harlond Beverly@Kevin_Noon https://t.co/nULJSdRwCf

— Corey Evans (@coreyevans_10) April 16, 2018

The four-star guard is viewed as a point guard by the 247Sports Composite Rankings and they have him listed as the No. 6 PG and the No. 61 overall recruit in the class. He is also viewed as the No. 3 recruit from Michigan.

Currently, Beverly holds just six offers but that number will likely skyrocket by the time he decides on what school he will attend for college. As it stands today, Michigan State is the runaway favorite to land a commitment from Beverly, but Holtmann cannot be counted out.

If the Buckeyes are able to add Beverly to their recruiting class, the combination of him and Gaffney would put the program in position of bringing in one of the best classes in the country.

Holtmann will likely try and get Beverly on campus in the near future, and if he is successful, the Buckeyes could have a real shot at poaching an elite talent from Big Ten foes Michigan and Michigan State.

Holtmann not done with visits

The aforementioned Beverly is not the only highly touted recruit Buckeye basketball coach Chris Holtmann will be visiting with this week. Andrew Slater of The Athletic took to Twitter Monday to report that Holtmann will be traveling to New York Wednesday to meet with another elite prospect.

Ohio State will be in on Wednesday for 5⭐️Isaiah Stewart’19 @Dreamville_33 of @TheCityRocks & @LaLuBasketball #Buckeyes pic.twitter.com/bwleExfKhE

— Andrew Slater (@Andrew__Slater) April 16, 2018

Continuing to focus on the 2019 recruiting class, Holtmann will reportedly visit with five-star center Isaiah Stewart (Rochester, NY / La Lumiere School.)

Stewart is the No. 8 center in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and is the No. 25 overall prospect in the class despite position. He is also viewed as the No. 2 prospect from the talent-rich state of New York.

However, unlike Beverly, Stewart is not flying under the radar one bit. He has acquired an impressive 37 offers already from the best college basketball programs in the country. Because of this, securing a commitment from him will be difficult for Holtmann, but not impossible.

We will learn more about how true of a contender Ohio State will be for Stewart’s commitment following Wednesday’s visit, but for now, the fact that Holtmann is doing his best to go after him is great news.
