Rule Changes (CNNSI link)

Rolling Signing Day coming to college football?

Recruiting has changed in college football over the last three years as the transfer portal and NIL have all been introduced. Now with increased scholarship counts and more set portal windows, staff and fans alike are still adjusting to the new norm in college athletics as a whole.

Football is the one sport that the overall calendar still doesn’t make a lot of sense when it comes to these new recruiting windows. With two portal periods after the season and in the spring, there is a lot to track for staff. Add in the early signing period falling right as many teams start prepping for bowl games, and it all is a mess. That is why we might be seeing a change come on the signing of high school players’ side of things.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, the idea of a ‘Rolling Signing Day’ is being tossed around by some heads in the college football space. What would that do? Well, it would schools and recruits alike lock down a spot on the roster almost immediately.

“Currently, they can’t formalize the agreements with schools until the December signing period, which means the deals aren’t binding. That leaves uncertainty on both sides,” Thamel said in his tweet thread. “The idea of a Rolling Singing Day would mean that when an offer is accepted by a recruit, they can sign an agreement that’s binding by both parties.”

With National Signing Day now almost meaning nothing overall, and the new Rev Share era of college sports now in effect, this seems to make a ton of sense for everyone involved. As Thamel says, this is likely still a ways away, but it would bring a whole other part to the college football recruiting process as a whole.

Just sayin': This is a great proposal and is much needed. Along with it, there should be an additional stipulation: Once a player signs his/her LOI he/she is committed to playing (i.e. can not transfer to another school for) at least 1 season at that school unless there is a head coaching change.
Would you also allow a transfer if a school receives severe sanctions for NCAA violations, such as cheating and then attempting to cover it up from investigation?

Warfield then lined up on the opposite side of the field for the next play. Unverferth took the snap from under center and initiated a play-action fake to his fullback before rolling out to the left and resetting his feet.

What happened next may be the most underappreciated touchdown catch in the history of Ohio State football.

At 17:34 in the above YouTube video of The Game, Warfield took off from the line of scrimmage out of a three-point stance and successfully evaded the Michigan defensive back in front of him playing shallow coverage. Before Warfield had even crossed the red zone on his go route, Unverferth had already made up his mind to chuck the ball deep despite the presence of two Wolverine safeties.

Beginning his leap from the goal line, Warfield put his broad jump credentials into action and flew through the air while turning back to the throw. He caught the first score of the day for the Buckeyes over a pair of defenders with just 41 seconds remaining in the first half.

The moment of brilliance from Warfield clearly inspired a comeback attitude from Ohio State's entire team heading into the locker room. The Wolverines would not score again for the remainder of The Game, and the Buckeyes finally captured the lead midway through the final quarter after a 15-play, 76-yard drive that concluded in a five-yard touchdown rush for Unverferth. Ohio State won 1963's edition of The Game by a final score of 14-10 and successfully avoided ending the season with merely a .500 record.

Warfield finished the game with five receptions for 76 yards and the phenomenal touchdown catch that proved to foreshadow his future as one of the greatest wide receivers of his era in professional football. Both totals were his second-most in a single contest across his Ohio State career only to his efforts against Northwestern in the previous game.

Two days later, the Cleveland Browns selected Warfield with the 11th overall pick in the 1964 NFL Draft. Warfield became one of six future Hall of Famers selected among the first 18 picks in that class. His conversion to wide receiver helped the Browns win the NFL Championship during his rookie year in 1964, and many fans of the franchise — including Ramzy Nasrallah — still consider him one of the best receivers in team history.

Ohio State’s president is now a member of the NCAA’s leading governing body.

The NCAA announced Thursday that Ohio State president Ted Carter is among the new appointees to the Board of Governors, which provides strategic leadership on NCAA-wide issues. Carter will serve a two-year appointment on the board.

In a social media post on Friday, Carter said he is “honored” to join the Board of Governors and “excited” for Ohio State to have a seat at the table amid a time of change in college sports.

Carter becomes Ohio State’s first representative on the Board of Governors since former OSU president Michael Drake, who chaired the Board of Governors from 2019-20, his final year with the Buckeyes.

Seattle Kraken forward John Hayden and the team’s blue-haired troll mascot had a close call with a brown bear during a promotional video shoot in Alaska.

Hayden and the mascot named Buoy were on a fly-fishing outing in Katmai National Park as part of a trip promoting youth hockey when the bear approached, video released by the team shows.

Knee-deep in a shallow river, they wore waders and other fly-fishing gear. Hayden had been fishing, but a guide quickly took the rod from him.

The bear charged toward the mascot, splashing water, but turned away before making contact as Hayden, Buoy and the film crew waded back to shore through a gentle current.

Game Thread CFP Playoff Cotton Bowl, tOSU vs Texas, Fri. Jan. 10th, 7:30 ET on ESPN

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but here's the Worst 30 plays of 2024 (according to some nerds)
#4 is the only one including Ohio State, and it's Texas losing 7 yards on 2nd and goal at the 1.
Countless plays of punters missing the ball, field goal attempts where the holder wasn't ready, intentional groundings in the endzone - a decision to run outside on 2nd and goal at the 1 was considered a worse play. Ha!

TE Nate Roberts (Official Thread)

That’s a relief

Apart from a couple of guys that would be threats for All B1G status if not for the Mackey award front-runner, that room was looking a little thin
Yeah, Max Klare, Will Kacmarek, Bennett Christian and Jelani Thurman are likely to receive the bulk of Ohio State’s tight end reps this fall, but Roberts has the premier talent necessary to become a star in future years while giving the Buckeyes excellent depth this season.

Ohio State’s 11 New Walk-Ons for 2025 Include Sons of Former Buckeyes, Three-Star Recruits

157040_h.jpg

Ohio State’s 11 new walk-ons for the 2025 season include several players whose last names will be familiar to Buckeye fans. Stanley Jackson Jr., a redshirt sophomore running back who previously played at Marshall, is the son of former Buckeye quarterback Stanley Jackson. Jaystin Gwinn, a freshman safety from nearby Westerville Central High School, is the son of former Ohio State safety Anthony Gwinn; his uncle, Jayson Gwinn, was also a defensive end for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State’s New Walk-Ons for 2025
No. Pos Player Year High School (Hometown) Previous School
14 QB Trey Robinette FR Miami Trace (Washington Court House, OH)
26 QB Kolton Stover FR Highland (Marengo, OH)
28 RB Stanley Jackson Jr. RS SO Westerville North (Westerville, OH) Marshall
30 WR Preston Wolfe FR Hilliard Bradley (Columbus, OH)
32 S JJ Sebert RS FR Pickerington North (Powell, OH) Bucknell
35 S Jaystin Gwinn FR Westerville Central (Westerville, OH)
36 CB Omar Jah FR Olentangy (Lewis Center, OH)
41 LS Grant Mills RS FR The Cannon School (Mooresville, NC) North Carolina
49 S Gavin Thobe FR Bellbrook (Dayton, OH)
54 LB Dylan Furshman FR The Benjamin School (Jupiter, FL)
57 OL Ian Gecse JR Grandview Heights (Columbus, OH)
The 11 new walk-ons join 19 returning walk-ons and 91 scholarship players on Ohio State’s 2025 roster, giving the Buckeyes 121 players as preseason camp begins.

While the House v. NCAA settlement approved this summer set a roster limit of 105 players for college football, teams are allowed to have larger rosters for now thanks to the Designated Student-Athlete exception, which gives teams extra roster spots to account for players who were already with the team that would have lost their spots if a hard cap of 105 players had gone into effect this season. As such, Ohio State will have the same number of players in camp this year as it has in other recent seasons.
