Ohio State looks to carry momentum from Sunday’s win.

After coming off of a brutal loss to Wisconsin on the road less than a week ago, Ohio State basketball responded nicely with a big win against the Michigan State Spartans in the Schott. Prior to that, the Bucks had dropped four consecutive games, some that many of you might not have been able to finish. Thad Matta will hope a win over the Spartans will be just what his team needed to get back into a groove.

Ohio State has been very hot and cold on the basketball court the past year and a half. That lack of consistency has made for some very frustrating games — and some that are a delight to watch when things are actually clicking. Sunday, JaQuan Lyle was in a shooting rhythm, and still gave the Buckeyes six assists.

Typically when he’s going, the team goes, whether that’s scoring, or when he’s dishing out assists like his life depends on it. Scoring across the board was pretty evenly distributed, which is great, because sometimes we never know where it’s going to come from on any given night.

As frustrating as Ohio State’s season has been at times, Nebraska’s has been difficult as well. They’ve particularly had problems out of conference, with losses to UCLA, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Creighton, Kansas, and Gardner-Webb. Some of those are tough games, so regardless of their 9-8 record, they’ve played some of the best that the country has to offer.

They’ve lost two in a row after a four-game win streak that included wins over Indiana and Maryland on the road, and Iowa at home. The first loss came to Northwestern at home, and the second was a six-point loss to Michigan on the road. They’re led by a senior guard in Tai Webster, who has some experience that most college basketball players don’t have, and never will have. They’ve also experienced a key loss, but you’ll read about both of those items a little bit later.

So yes, while it’s Nebraska and the name of the game is basketball, this isn’t a slouch game by any means for Ohio State. The win over Tom Izzo’s team Sunday was great, but it doesn’t mean anything if the Buckeyes can’t follow it up with a win against the Cornhuskers. The prospects of making the NCAA Tournament would look even more bleak with a loss Wednesday.

We’ve seen a fiery Thad Matta not seen as often in the past. Perhaps it’ll put a much-needed spark into the Buckeyes for a late push as we get closer to February and March. First, they’ve got to beat Nebraska.

Numbers to know

3

The Buckeyes beat Nebraska by three last season when the two teams faced off in Lincoln. It was a game that was quite the nail-biter (to be fair, most of them are) but Ohio State’s team has a very different makeup this season. Most of the key pieces are still intact, but looking at some of the games that Nebraska has played this season, we could be in for another close one.

30

That’s the number of Nebraska’s Ed Morrow. He’s out indefinitely with a foot injury, and was the Cornhuskers’ leading rebounder until that point. His absence will be a huge plus for the Buckeyes, who are known to have their own issues on the glass at times. He also was a 10 points per game scorer. Without 30, Nebraska is a different team.

1

Ohio State has one win on the road this season, and it came against Navy in the Veterans Classic. Since then, they’ve lost to Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The Buckeyes are going to have to eventually get past that (right?) and get a road victory in the Big Ten. With Nebraska somewhat shorthanded with the loss of Morrow, there might not be a better time to get it going than Wednesday night. It’s not like Ohio State has many other opportunities past that, anyway.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Kam Williams

Williams is the 4th leading scorer on the team. He’s not one of the better rebounders, and will hardly give the Buckeyes an assist based on his role. But he’s always good for the occasional game where he’s just making everything that he throws at the basket, and that’s a pretty dang good fallback option for when everything else falls apart. Hopefully things don’t come to that, but you just never know with this team.

Trevor Thompson

Thompson is somewhat in the same crop as Williams, but in a lesser capacity. He’s nearly averaging a double-double, and legitimately seems like a better player than he was last season. If he’s not playing at least decent underneath the basket, things typically go bad fast for Thad Matta’s team. When he’s playing well, it opens things up for the guards, and it can make for some really exciting offense. He’ll be reaping the benefits of Morrow’s absence.

Nebraska

Tai Webster

Webster’s one of the senior leaders on the Cornhuskers’ squad. He’s a native of Auckland, and plays for New Zealand’s national team. He led the team in scoring and rebounding, and that international experience has no doubt been good for him as he leads Nebraska in scoring with over 18 points per game. He’s also bringing in five rebounds and four assists, so he helps in other ways consistently. Expect to hear his name and number called plenty of times Wednesday night as Nebraska’s experienced leader.

Michael Jacobson

The 6’9 forward should be seeing more minutes against the Buckeyes and moving forward with Ed Morrow out. The sophomore has had a pair of double-doubles on the season, with a few more close ones, with nine rebounds in a few contests. Depth is always key in basketball at any level, but can be even greater at the college level because of the greater variation in talent levels across the game. Jacobson’s role on the team should be much greater until further notice.

The Buckeyes next 2017 addition could be coming from within state lines.

A visit in the present...

Big news came on Tuesday as 2017 offensive line prospect Thayer Munford (Massillon, OH / Washington) made it apparent that he will be visiting Columbus, Ohio this weekend. This comes as huge news because Ohio State has been looking to add one more offensive lineman in this class and this visit all but assures that Munford will come away with an offer. If an offer is thrown his way, it’s likely that a commit to the Buckeyes would follow.

I am taking an official visit to The Ohio State University this weekend ⚪#BuckeyeNation

— Thayer Munford (@Big_Grizze62) January 18, 2017

Munford, who stands at nearly 6-foot-6, is one of the top players in the state of Ohio and a top 300 player in the country, according to 247Sports. Coach Greg Studrawa has taken the lead in this recruitment and has seemingly went to bat for Munford down the stretch. A commit from Munford would give the Buckeyes six in-state commits for the class of 2017—seven if you include Marcus Williamson, an Ohio native who went to IMG Academy in Florida. In addition to Ohio State, Munford has strongly considered Kentucky and Pittsburgh throughout his recruiting process.

...and an offer for the future

Ohio State sent a new offer out to 2019 offensive lineman William Putnam. Putnam, from Illinois, stands 6-foot-4 and possesses great athleticism for his size. He is also a state-ranked wrestler at Glenwood. A strong sophomore season placed Putnam on the recruiting map as he’s gathered a handful of offers since August.

Honored to receive an offer from THE Ohio state university! ️‼️ pic.twitter.com/yOWgG5UUp0

— Will Putnam (@BigWillPut) January 18, 2017

Along with Ohio State, Putnam has received offers from Georgia, Illinois, Northwestern and Missouri. Though he is not rated on most recruiting sites, it’s looking like Putnam will be a name to watch moving forward as he continues his high school career. With the trajectory he’s currently on, Putnam could be projected to be one of the top players at his position when his senior year rolls around. Since it’s so early in the process, Putnam does not have any favorites at this point and it looks like he’ll take his time with his recruitment that is just starting up.

Here are the highlights from his sophomore season.

OTTAWA, ON – FEBRUARY 6: Curtis Lazar #27 of the Ottawa Senators acknowledges the fans as he steps on the ice after being named first star of the game following an NHL game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Canadian Tire Centre on February 6, 2016 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Jana Chytilova/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images)

Admittedly, it’s pretty easy to be down on Curtis Lazar.

Since arriving on the NHL scene as a 19-year old, the young forward has struggled to assert himself at the NHL level. The blend of offensive skill, intangibles and grit that turned Lazar into the 17th overall draft selection in 2013 has not translated into strong performance since he turned pro.

In fact, in his first three seasons in the league, he’s not only been one of the least productive NHL forwards relative to his ice time, he’s now been held pointless through 21 games this season.

In each of his seasons, there have been excuses along the way. In his first year, he was just a rookie who played conservatively in depth role. Sure, that style helped limit mistakes and earned the praise of his coaches, but it didn’t grow or allow Lazar to develop confidence in his skills either.

In his sophomore year, Lazar’s performance was blamed on the fact that his spot in the lineup was always in a state of flux. It’s not that he was at risk of ever being benched, but thanks to the injuries, Lazar always seemed to be the guy who was moved around the lineup to fill whatever vacancy in the top six or top nine opened up.

In his mind, the inconsistent roles and inconsistent linemates created an identity crisis which contributed to his ineffectiveness.

This season was supposed to be different, but mononucleosis derailed his training camp and Lazar missed the entire preseason. Rather than start the season in the NHL, Lazar was optioned to Binghamton where he played in their first 13 games scoring three goals and adding an assist.

The numbers alone never warranted a promotion, but thanks to the general shittiness of the Binghamton roster, when the Senators were beset by injuries, they turned to a familiar face in Lazar.

Lazar’s struggles have been omnipresent throughout his 164 games as a pro, but because he has failed to register just one point in his 21 games played this season, the media have picked up on his struggles. They previously would have been swept under the rug or chalked to development, but coupled with the likelihood that Lazar will be left unprotected in this summer’s expansion draft, his future with the Senators has never felt less certain.

Due to these struggles and the fact that he’s already into his third season with Ottawa, it was assumed that his inherent trade value would be proportionate to his performance, but when TSN‘s Frank Seravelli published his list of the ‘Top 20 players potentially available’ before the March 1st NHL Trade Deadline, I was shocked to see Lazar be ranked 12th in the listing.

Now, this simply could be a stunning reflection of how barren the NHL trade market has become thanks to the congestion in the standings, but then you see Lazar be mentioned ahead of players like Ben Bishop, Marc-Andre Fleury, James van Riemsdyk and Alex Burrows and you can’t help but wonder if there are enough general managers out there who will overlook Lazar’s recent history to trade something of value to Ottawa because of what he accomplished in junior hockey.

I love the NHL.

LGHL Ohio State is still an offseason winner despite losses to the NFL

Ohio State is still an offseason winner despite losses to the NFL
Ian Cuevas

usa_today_9786428.0.jpg

Though some key members have moved on, the Buckeyes still return a talented team.

“When it comes to selling elite recruits on the chance to be developed into draft picks, few staffs have as much evidence to work with as Ohio State’s right now.”

- Austin Ward, ESPN

Even with the losses to the NFL for Ohio State, including players such as Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore, Curtis Samuel, and Noah Brown will certainly sting, but the offseason can still be considered a success for the Buckeyes. After all, they return quarterback J.T. Barrett, back for his senior season. And they also get to bring back Billy Price, who will likely shift over to center, as well as key defensive linemen Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard, and Jalyn Holmes.

Add in Jamarco Jones coming back and tight end Marcus Baugh, and the team still holds much of its shape from the team that the College Football Playoff saw in 2016-17. The 31-0 loss to Clemson in the national semifinal game looked to have stung just enough to help bring these players back for another run at a championship.

And an important aspect of these losses is they were mostly from the same position groups. Hooker, Lattimore, and Gareon Conley all exit from the defensive backs, which the Buckeyes should be able to shore up on considering recent commitments and players still on the roster (including Damon Webb). Samuel and Brown left a bevy of talent behind them as well, with plenty of candidates perhaps ready and up to the task of replacing the two offensive players at H-back and wide receiver.

“[Big Ten underclassmen that could leave early in 2018] Jerome Baker, Sam Hubbard, Dre’Mont Jones, Mike Weber”

- Jesse Temple, ESPN

With the topic of players leaving early for the NFL draft, Ohio State survived its latest annual departures from stars including stars in the secondary and on the offensive side of the ball. But it’s never too early to take a peek at who could declare for the draft after the 2017 season and which candidates seem most likely. Jesse Temple of ESPN broke down the most likely players to do just that in the Big Ten, and four Buckeyes made the list. Of the four mentioned, defensive end Sam Hubbard seems the most obvious choice, given that he could have left after this season and chose to stay another year. The defensive terror did an excellent job the past two seasons of wreaking havoc on quarterbacks across the league and he’ll likely head for the professional level after next season.

Mike Weber was also included, which may seem like a surprise at first but as the article mentions, when you consider the professional lifespan of a running back in the NFL, it makes much more sense that if the rising redshirt sophomore has another great year he could head for greener pastures. Jerome Baker had his breakout year this past season with the Buckeyes in part due to an injury to Dante Booker, who was supposed to be the starting linebacker. Dre’Mont Jones quietly finished with 47 tackles as a redshirt freshman in 2016 and will likely play a larger role next season, so it’s not impossible to see him leaving early either.

“Unsurprisingly, Ezekiel Elliott was named the PFWA Rookie of the Year, as well as the Offensive Rookie of the Year. His college teammate, Joey Bosa, was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year.”

- Harry Lyles Jr., SB Nation

Former Ohio State standouts Ezekiel Elliott and Joey Bosa haven’t stopped producing at a high level in the NFL, either. Their extremely successful college careers have transitioned beautifully into the professional stage as Elliott was named the Pro Football Writers Association Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year, while Bosa took the Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Elliott had a monster rookie season, posting 1,631 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 322 carries. The former Buckeye running back was just recently knocked out of the playoffs by Green Bay, but still performed well in the game.

Bosa, meanwhile, missed the Chargers’ first four games but quickly made up ground on the rest of the league finishing the year with 10.5 sacks. The mark put him among the best in the NFL. Both also made the PFWA All-Rookie team, along with former Buckeye offensive tackle Taylor Decker.

Your excuse to tailgate in mid-April is officially here.

Ohio State made official their spring game’s date and time Tuesday.

Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes will look to rebuild their secondary (again) and retool a listless offense under new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson with spring practices starting March 7 building to the annual Scarlet & Gray game, Saturday, April 15. The time has not officially been set but a noon or 1 p.m. kick would certainly make a lot of sense.

This looks to be the first time there won’t be an Ohio State men’s lacrosse game against a big time opponent as the undercard to the main event that is the spring game. The lax Bucks will be in Ann Arbor taking on Michigan that Saturday.

Tickets in the past have been around $5 (or $10 at the gate) with 100% of proceeds going to charity.
