Ohio State will be looking for their third straight win when they travel to College Park to take on Maryland later today.

Ohio State had a very uneven performance on Wednesday night against Rutgers, but in the end they were able to squeak out a 70-64 victory over the Scarlet Knights. The Buckeyes looked like they were going to run away from Rutgers at times in the victory, but sloppy play from Ohio State allowed the Scarlet Knights to crawl back into the game on a number of occasions. Not only did the Buckeyes jump out to an 11-point lead in the first half before taking a 33-27 edge into the halftime break, but early in the second half Ohio State opened up a 12-point lead on Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights were able to again work their way back into the game, despite seeing leading scorer Corey Sanders foul out with five minutes left in the game. With just over a minute to go the score was tied before Kam Williams not only hit a three-pointer to give the Buckeyes the lead for good, and the junior guard was also fouled on the play. Williams hit the free throw and finished with a career-high 23 points in the victory. The win by Ohio State was their 100th overall win over a Big Ten opponent at Value City Arena.

Now Ohio State hit the road to take on a Maryland team that has been in a bit of a funk, losing their last two games. These two teams squared off less than two weeks ago, with Maryland earning a 77-71 victory in Columbus. Justin Jackson paced Maryland with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Ohio State was able to get 20 points from Jae’Sean Tate, and 18 points from Marc Loving, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Buckeyes to pull the upset.

Ohio State will be hoping this trip to College Park will be a lot different than the last time the Buckeyes played there. Last January, Maryland jumped out to a 48-30 halftime lead on Ohio State, and continued to widen the margin in the second half, eventually beating the Buckeyes 100-65. The loss dropped Ohio State to 1-3 all-time in College Park, with the lone win coming in the 1979 NIT. Ohio State has lost their last three games overall to the Terrapins.

Since beating Ohio State in Columbus on the last day of January, Maryland has fallen into a bit of a funk, dropping their last two games. Last Saturday against Purdue, the Terrapins lost in College Park 73-72, falling to the Boilermakers in the final seconds of the game. Maryland followed that up by losing to Penn State 70-64 on Tuesday night. The loss to the Nittany Lions was the first time Maryland had been defeated on the road this season. The back-to-back losses mark the first time Maryland has dropped back-to-back games since February of last year. The last time Maryland dropped three games in a row came back in 2012, which was head coach Mark Turgeon’s first year with the school.

The consecutive losses have dropped Maryland in the Big Ten standings, with the Terrapins currently sitting two games behind Wisconsin. With games next week at Northwestern, who sits just behind Maryland in the standings, and at Wisconsin next Sunday, today’s game is one the Terrapins desperately need if they have any hopes of staying in thick of the race for the Big Ten title.

Numbers to know

9

During the 13 years Thad Matta has been Ohio State’s head coach there have been 82 instances of home-and-home regular season series with Big Ten opponents. Just nine times has Ohio State been swept in both meetings. There has been 32 times in which Ohio State has been defeated in the first game of the home-and-home, and 24 times the Buckeyes have been able to earn the victory in the rematch to avoid the sweep.

1000/500

Jae’Sean Tate and Marc Loving are soon going to be the 26th and 27th players to record at least 1,000 points and 500 rebounds while in a Buckeye uniform. With 507 rebounds already to his credit, Tate is likely going to be the next member of the club, as he needs just 12 points to reach 1,000 for his career. Loving has already reached 1,000 points for his career, and needs 14 rebounds to reach 500 career rebounds.

6

Both teams have had their fair share of success this year in close games, with each school winning nine games that have been decided by six points or less. Three of Maryland’s four losses this year have come by less than six points, including the two most recent losses Maryland has suffered since playing the Buckeyes. While Ohio State has the same number of wins as Maryland in games decided by six points or less, the Buckeyes have also suffered even more heartbreaking losses, falling in six games decided by six points or less.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Trevor Thompson

With 15 points and 13 rebounds in the victory over Rutgers on Wednesday night, Thompson notched his ninth double-double of the year, which is second-most in the country among players who are averaging less than 24 minutes per game. In the earlier matchup this year with Maryland, Thompson was close to notching yet another double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Marc Loving

The senior scored eight points on Wednesday night against Rutgers, and currently sits 33rd all-time on Ohio State’s career scoring list with 1,238 points. Loving should move up another spot on the list today as he trails Ron Stokes by just two points for 32nd place. After passing Stokes, Loving will set his sights on Jared Sullinger, who sits in 31st place with 1,282 career points.

Maryland

Melo Trimble

In the first half of Tuesday night’s game against Penn State, Trimble surpassed the 1,500 career points for the Terrapins. The junior guard finished with 11 points in the loss, and now has reached double figures in 13 straight games this year. Ohio State did an admirable job of containing Trimble in the first meeting, only allowing him 13 points on 5-13 shooting, while also forcing the guard into five turnovers.

Justin Jackson

The freshman forward has done some of his best work on the court of late for the Terrapins. In three of the last four games Jackson has reached double-figures in scoring, and he narrowly missed his third double-double during that span on Tuesday night, scoring 14 points and adding nine rebounds. The 22 points Jackson scored in Maryland’s victory in Columbus recently was only topped by the 28 points he scored in the victory over Minnesota just a few days before. Jackson is Maryland’s best rebounder this year, pulling down 6.3 rebounds per game.

Unfortunate instances for both Buckeyes.

"Been a rough 24 hours for our program,"

Thad Matta on the family emergencies of JaQuan Lyle and Keita Bates-Diop, as reported by Adam Jardy (Columbus Dispatch)

Family emergencies will keep JaQuan Lyle and Keita Bates-Diop away from action this weekend as Ohio State travels to College Park, Md. to take on No. 21 Maryland.

Lyle’s sister is having complications after giving birth to a child, and Lyle was able to get back home in Indiana on Thursday, according to Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch. For Bates-Diop, his brother collapsed during a basketball practice on Thursday; Bates-Diop was able to get back to Illinois on Thursday evening, as reported by Jardy.

Our thoughts are with both the Lyle and Bates-Diop families.

“Not to be outdone, the Buckeyes have the second-best offense in the country, averaging just over four goals per game and they have the best power play in college hockey, clicking at an incredible 28.8 percent.”

Ohio State’s student sports radio President and The Lantern reporter Miles McQuinn on OSU hockey (The Lantern)

Hockey season is starting to heat up as teams make the push for a bid into the NCAA Tournament. Right now, Ohio State is on the outside looking in—but they have a couple big opportunities to get back into the tournament picture.

The Lantern’s Miles McQuinn broke down his thoughts on what the No. 20 Buckeyes can do on the homestretch to help get themselves back into the top 16 picture. First, McQuinn notes that the work has been cut out for OSU. No. 5 Minnesota comes to town this weekend fresh off a beatdown delivered to No. 10 Penn State. Even though the Gophers are a top five squad, the Buckeyes bring their own elite rank in the scoring and power play departments. Right now, OSU is averaging 4.08 goals per game (second best in the country) while allowing an average of 2.66 goals per contest. The Buckeyes lead the nation in power play conversions, scoring on 32-of-111 (28.8 percent) attempts.

For OSU to get into a top 16 position, wins this weekend would help go a long way. To catch the Buckeyes in action against the Gophers, you can tune into Big Ten Network at 8 p.m. on Friday. The rubber match on Saturday will also be at 8 p.m. and can once again be seen on BTN.

“When it comes to the 2018 class, the Buckeyes aren’t fighting an uphill climb, but it is fair to say that Meyer and his staff will have more questions to answer when pitching prospects than they did a year ago.”

Ben Axelrod on Ohio State’s recruiting in 2018 (Landof10.com)

Ohio State has already reeled in three commits for the 2018 class, but the recruiting pitch this time around might be a little more trickier than before.

Ben Axelrod from Landof10.com wrote about how Urban Meyer’s 2018 class might be his most important class yet as head man in charge of the Buckeyes. The 2018 class follows a legendary 2017 class that featured a litany of five-star and four-star recruits from the top high schools and prep schools in the nation. Another problem Meyer may face on the recruiting trail is explaining 1) what went wrong in the 31-0 PlayStation Fiesta Bowl loss against Clemson and 2) the constant revolving door for position coaches.

The past two recruiting classes had the benefit of seeing a national championship win and subsequent mass exodus to the NFL Draft—both great marketing tools for Meyer to reel in the next great high school prospects. The question now: can OSU get back to the same level as they were a couple years ago? Ohio State is already an elite program in the country, making it to 2⁄3 of the college football playoffs. However, with great recruiting classes, talent, and past successes comes great expectations.

So far, the debacle to the eventual national champions Clemson and reshuffling/ reloading of the coaching staff hasn’t thrown off the 2018 prospectus too much. Two five-star recruits in Emory Jones and Jaiden Woodbey have committed to OSU for 2018, as well as four-star Brian Snead.

But like anything, only time will tell if Meyer and the Buckeyes can pull off the same magic in 2018 as they did with the 2017 recruiting class.

The math has some nice things to say about Ohio State football.

Bill C.’s recently released 2017 S&P+ projections have Ohio State second behind Alabama, and in front of Florida State and Michigan.

After getting shut out in the first round of the playoff, replacing two co-offensive coordinators, and again turning around 3⁄4 of the secondary, a second-ranked projection might feel a little high for some Buckeye fans — but there are good reasons for such a lofty preseason rank.

How the Projected S&P+ works

This is from Bill’s 2017 Projections piece:

Recruiting is easy. I simply create a projected rating based on these two-year recruiting rankings. The recruiting-based projection makes up 25 percent of the overall S&P+ projection.

For returning production, I apply projected changes (based on each team’s returning offensive and defensive production, which are on different scales) to last year’s S&P+ averages. The projection based on returning production accounts for 56 percent.

For recent history, I’ve gotten a little weird. I found that the previous year’s S&P+ ratings were carrying a little too much weight in the projections, so what you see below is a projection based solely off of seasons two to five years ago. Recent history now carries less weight in the overall formulas, only 19 percent. It basically acts as a slight supplement to the two factors above.

So, essentially, it’s 25% 2-year recruiting rankings, 56% returning production (which is based on both experience returning and last year’s S&P+ performances on both sides of the ball), and 19% S&P+ performance from the last 2-5 years.

Let’s dive in to each of those.

Recruiting rankings and Ohio State

The only team to recruit better than Ohio State in the 2017 class, over the last two classes, and over the last five classes, has been Alabama.

Over the last five years, I’d argue that Ohio State has closed the gap with Alabama recruiting-wise, and the group of truly-elite recruiters has closed to about six or seven teams. These six teams have a 5-year recruiting percentage over 96.4%: Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, USC, Florida State, and Georgia. Michigan is charging fast into that category, with the fourth-best 2-year recruiting ranking, but the 19th-ranked 5-year recruiting ranking.

Traditionally, as Bud Elliott writes every season, it’s almost impossible for a team that doesn’t have a blue chip percentage over 50% to win the national title. Last year 13 teams fit that bill.

We don’t have the blue chip percentage numbers for 2017 yet, but to get a rough approximation of national title contenders from a talent perspective I looked at the top-15 2-year recruiters. They include: Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, Michigan, LSU, Georgia, USC, Florida, Auburn, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Clemson, Tennessee, UCLA, and Stanford. That’s a pretty solid list to me.

Returning production

In terms of overall returning experience, the 2016 Buckeyes were dead-last in Power-5 teams. This season things are a little better, with the Buckeyes ranking 72nd overall in team returning production. That’s 50th in offensive returning production and 92nd in defensive returning production.

As Bill explains, the correlations between returning production and future S&P+ are much better on the defensive side of the ball, particularly with overall passes defended. That’s what really hurts the Buckeyes, as one of the best 2016 secondaries in the country was gutted by players leaving for the NFL. It’s the same story on the other side of the ball, where returning receiving yards seems to have the greatest impact on offensive S&P+. Noah Brown and Curtis Samuel’s production will definitely be missed here.

Ohio State is just 72nd in returning production, but nevertheless rank 3rd in returning production as it relates to 2017 projected S&P+. That’s because the projected S&P+ rankings take returning production as it relates to last year’s offensive and defensive S&P+ rankings. So, since Ohio State finished 23rd and 5th in offensive and defensive S&P+ last year, they still do very well in the returning production part of the projected 2017 rankings.

Recent History

This one is easy -- it’s really just Alabama and then everyone else. While Ohio State ranks second, the difference between the two in 5-year average S&P+ is the same distance between Ohio State and USC at 8th. That’s a wide gap.

What does it all mean?

If you’re betting on next season, the pool of teams you should be choosing from is pretty small. There are only four teams that rank in the top ten in all three of Bill’s projected S&P+ factors — Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, and LSU.

Next we’ll take a look at the Big Ten and playoff races according to these projections.

On top of that, Ruckert is now ranked No. 1 in his home state of New York.

With Ohio State in the heat of their winter workouts, the players are currently under the watchful eye of strength coach Mickey Marotti. With mat drills underway and a NCAA quiet period in effect until Apr. 15, one would think Ohio State's recruiting situation would be somewhat quiet. Well, maybe for some schools, but like Urban Meyer has stated time and time again: recruiting is a business that never stops. The Buckeyes ended 2017 with a huge bang and have hit the ground running in 2018 keeping the same pace.

Buckeye TE target skyrockets

Ohio State didn't need to sign a tight end prospect in their 2017 class with their terrific haul of in-state Ohio products Luke Farrell and Jake Hausman in the 2016 class. However, with a gap year without a tight end signee, the Buckeyes are determined to bring in a tight end that can present terrific run blocking skills and possess the abilities to be a legitimate threat in the passing game.

Ohio State found their guy in Jeremy Ruckert (Lindenhurst, NY / Lindenhurst Senior) and they've made it no secret. Easily the top target Urban Meyer and staff are recruiting for the position, the Buckeyes and Ruckert are certainly not strangers. In fact, the staff has made their presence at Lindenhurst Senior High School known as of late. Ruckert was also recently in town for Ohio State's junior day. It looks as if the Buckeyes are in excellent condition, as of right now, for Ruckert—and Ruckert himself continues to make the case for why.

Yesterday, via his Twitter account, Jeremy made it public that he was now the top ranked tight end in the country as well as the top overall prospect in all of New York. Obviously, with those rankings, it's easy to see why the Buckeyes are so high on Ruckert and are actively pursuing him daily.

I am honored to be named the Nation's #1 Tight End and New York's #1 overall player in 2018!!! #Blessed. pic.twitter.com/i7fs0vzRhP

— Jeremy Ruckert (@Jeremy_Ruckert1) February 9, 2017

Could Ohio State once again land their top target at a position of need? The 247sports crystal ball predictions certainly like their chances, as all five predictions have Ruckert going to the Buckeyes.

OSU commit gets his 5th star

Earlier this week the Buckeyes gained another 2018 pledge when California stud safety Jaiden Woodbey (Upland, CA / St. John Bosco) gave Ohio State his verbal commitment. At the time, Woodbey was "only" a four-star safety prospect. While that's certainly nothing to hang your head about, with the way Ohio State fared in 2017 with their defensive back pledges, a four-star would've been on the outside looking in—considering the amount of five-star pledges that the Buckeyes signed. Well, fast forward just two days and with the newest rankings update from 247sports, Woodbey is now a five-star.

CA➡️OH move is going to be real in 2018
