The crowd size, like The Spot, was good.

Ohio State opened the day by stomping all over Michigan’s lacrosse team. Then, they got to enjoy live coverage on BTN while Michigan’s game will have to be broadcasted on tape delay. And once the games wrapped up, they picked up another W over That School Up North.

Ohio State clobbered Michigan in spring game attendance. Michigan reported 57,418 in attendance for their game, while Ohio State had 80,143.

Ohio Stadium, of course, wasn’t at full capacity today thanks to stadium renovations closing some of the upper decks. Before the game, university officials expected a sellout.

It says a lot about the devotion of Buckeye fans that so many are willing to not only attend, but pay (tickets were only five bucks, but still) to attend a giant practice. That helps create a strong atmosphere for the game, helping recruiting efforts. That paid off today, as the Buckeyes have secured two blue-chip commitments today.

Hopefully everybody had fun out there.

The best possible ending to a spring football game.

Ohio State fans are no stranger to the heroic story of Buckeye superfan Jacob Jarvis.

Jarvis, a young man who’s battled Duchenne muscular dystrophy, has been a staple of the Ohio State football program during Urban Meyer’s time in Columbus. Former Ohio State (now Denver Broncos) tight end Jeff Heuerman forged a special bond with Jarvis and his family and during the Buckeyes’ 2014 national title run, Jarvis was seen just about everywhere with the team.

If our heartstrings didn’t need an even deeper tug, we got one during the end of the Buckeyes’ 2017 spring football game. On the final play of the final drive, OSU starter J.T. Barrett returned to the game, with a familiar face at running back: Jarvis.

After getting the handoff from Jarvis, the young man booked it to the end zone where he was mobbed by his Ohio State teammates. What an incredible moment for Buckeye Nation and sports fan everywhere alike:

According to 97.1 The Fan’s Lori Schmidt, a handful of Buckeye upperclassmen lobbied the coaching staff to end the game on what is now being called “The Jacob Special.”

Jacob Jarvis, who is battling MD, said Jalyn Holmes, Tyquan Lewis and JT Barrett lobbied for him to be able to score a TD today... 1/2

Wide receivers and backup quarterbacks impress in the Scarlet and Gray game.

Ohio State fans got their first official look at the 2017 Buckeye football team on Saturday in the annual Scarlet and Gray game. While admittedly the results of a spring game rarely indicate regular season success, there was plenty to buoy the Buckeyes’ optimism for the upcoming fall slate. With yet another year of substantial turnover in the player and coaching ranks, the OSU coaching staff used the spring game to see where the team stood, especially in terms of the passing game.

Though the spring scrimmage was played in front of a sellout crowd, Ohio Stadium’s capacity was considerably smaller on Saturday than for normal games, spring or fall. With renovations taking place in C-deck, just over 82,000 tickets were sold for this year’s spring game, which saw former Nike Chairman Phil Knight and College Football Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz serve as Guest Coaches for the Gray and Scarlet teams respectively.

To the surprise of nearly everyone, the game’s opening quarter was played with little to no hitting, as the offensive players were marked down by contact. While the early limitations handicapped the defense, it made for an exciting offensive display, as fans got a healthy dose of what new Offensive Coordinator Kevin Wilson’s fast-paced scheme could look like.

On the first drive for the Gray team, starting quarterback J.T. Barrett led the team down the field for a touchdown. Tight-end A.J. Alexander capped the first drive with the short reception. His second catch of the series.

Joe Burrow, the odds-on favorite to back up Barrett in the fall, opened the Scarlet team’s first drive, but after a couple of plays was replaced by Dwayne Haskins. The two alternated snaps throughout the drive.

Haskins got the Scarlet team on the board with a beautifully thrown ball to Johnnie Dixon for an 18-yard touchdown.

On the Gray team’s second drive, after handing off to running back Mike Weber, Barrett swung out and Weber completed a 17-yard pass for the first razzle-dazzle of the day.

After a field goal put the Gray team on top 10-7, Scarlet answered on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to former walk-on running back-turned-wide receiver Ke’Von Huguely. In all fairness, had the defense been allowed to hit the quarterbacks, the play likely would have ended in a sack or worse.

On the next drive, in the middle of throwing a deep ball, a Gray lineman was blocked into Barrett, causing his deep-ball to float and be picked off by Damon Arnette. On the first play following the quarter break, Dixon caught a 44-yard touchdown pass, this time from Burrow, putting the Scarlet team up 21-10.

The second quarter saw a number of differences on the field, first Haskins replaced Barrett as the quarterback for the Gray team, and defenders were allowed to tackle. The teams traded scores the remainder of the quarter to go into halftime with the Scarlet team leading 28-24.

In one quarter of action, Barrett finished 8-12 for 71 yards, a touchdown, and a pick. After the first half, Burrow was an impressive 12 for 16 for 240 yards and three TDs, while Haskins was 9-13 for 153 yards and two scores. While the quarterbacks played against different defenders, it ended up being a fairly positive day for each of Ohio State’s top-three QBs. Both Burrow and Haskins continued into the second half.

With a slightly more run-focused third quarter, the Gray team pulled even at 31 with the Scarlet squad before the end of the quarter. DeMario McCall led both teams on the ground with 83 yards on six carries; he also finished with two catches for 48 yards. Weber saw limited action, picking up 13 yards on five early carries.

With just five minutes remaining in the game, true-freshman quarterback Tate Martell ran into the endzone to put the Scarlet team up 38-31. Martell finished the game for the Scarlet team, going 1-2 for 11 yards throwing and picking up 24 yards on the ground on two carries.

With the Scarlet team’s victory already assured, the Meyer called in Buckeye superfan Jacob Jarvis to finish the game as the team’s tailback. After taking the handoff from Barrett, Jarvis weaved his wheelchair through the Gray defense to cap the afternoon’s scoring at 44-31 in favor of the Scarlet squad.

The losing Gray team had to walk from the ‘Shoe to the Woody Hayes Center, and will be pulling landscaping duty in Buckeye Grove later this spring.

Ohio State will kick off the 2017 season on Thursday, August 31st in Bloomington, IN.

3 things we learned:

1. J.T. Barrett is the starter, but the backup battle is gonna be fun. First off, for everyone feverishly typing tweets and message board posts about how J.T. Barrett needs to be benched in favor of Joe Burrow, push away from the keyboard, go outside, take a walk, and come back when you’ve calmed down.

Barrett is, was, and will be Ohio State’s starting quarterback until he graduates, unless an injury or other unforeseen issue dictates otherwise.

However, the impressive spring game showings by Burrow and Haskins, should give Buckeye fans plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future, should Barrett go down this season, and for when he is gone in 2018. It also will lead to one of the most interesting storylines for this fall’s camp.

Burrow had a great outing, especially in the first half, showing a tremendous touch on balls both short and long. Haskins was a little more hit-or-miss, alternating between teams Scarlet and Gray, but they both proved that should Ohio State need a backup to step in and play, whomever ends up winning the battle will be up for the challenge.

2. The deep passing game looked... dare we say it? Promising. With the embarrassing shutout against Clemson in January’s Fiesta Bowl still fresh in everyone’s minds, one of the big questions coming into the spring game was whether or not Ohio State’s passing game would look any different with Wilson now at the helm.

While again tempering the excitement from a scrimmage with rotating rosters and flexible rules, OSU’s wide receivers looked impressive. Johnnie Dixon, Terry McLaurin, K.J. Hill, Eric Glover-Williams, and others looked strong both in terms of their hands and route-running. Both Dixon and McLaurin caught a pair of touchdowns, and in limited action, Parris Campbell looked promising moving from WR to H-back.

3. We might finally see Ohio State use its tight-ends this year. Starting tight-end Marcus Baugh was held out of the spring game due to injury, which gave sophomore A.J. Alexander and freshman Luke Farrell the opportunity to get extra reps.

The pair combined for five catches for 50 yards, and Alexander scored a first quarter touchdown, but what was most striking about the use of the tight-ends in the game is that they were allowed to get more depth on routes than they have been in recent seasons.

With Wilson coaching the TEs in addition to his responsibilities as O-cor, this should be an exciting development for the legions of fans that have voiced displeasure about the position’s lack of productivity under Meyer in recent years.

The Buckeyes blowout Michigan in The Big House ... Again.

The 10th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team earned a commanding 18-7 win against the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor prior to Michigan’s spring game.

Ohio State improves to 11-2 on the year, while Michigan, who entered the game 0-2 in conference play, falls to 8-4 on the season. Overall, the Buckeyes are now 6-0 against Michigan as Division I rivals.

The Buckeye began scoring early and often. Senior specialist Jake Withers won the opening faceoff and took the ball down for Ohio State’s first score just 12 seconds into play. Sophomore attackman Jack Jasinski, coming off a four-goal, three-assist performance against Johns Hopkins last week, followed up with his first goal of the day. Michigan would add one goal to slow the Buckeyes, but Ohio State closed out the first quarter with five straight goals to take a 7-1 lead into the second.

Ohio State slowed things down a little bit throughout the second. Freshman midfielder Tre Leclaire added to the Buckeyes’ lead early in the quarter, while senior midfielder J.T. Blubaugh found the back of the net to give Ohio State an eight-point lead with 11:48 remaining in the half. Michigan added two goals midway through the quarter, but shots by junior attackman Colin Chell and senior midfielder John Kelly kept the Ohio State advantage at eight heading into the break.

Senior attackman Eric Fannell opened up the third with another Ohio State goal just 15 seconds into play. Jasinski’s second goal of the game then extended the Buckeyes’ lead to 10 early on in the quarter. After a Michigan goal, Leclaire and Fannell each found the back of the net to extend the Buckeye lead. The Wolverines then hit two more shots, but, on goals by Chell, Fannell and Withers, Ohio State took an 18-6 lead into the final quarter.

The Buckeyes finally relented in the fourth quarter. Though Michigan maintained possession for most of the quarter, the Wolverines scored just once.

Fannell led the Buckeyes in scoring with four goals and two assists on the day. Leclaire was just behind, adding three goals and five assists for Ohio State. Overall, nine Buckeyes scored, with six players scoring multiple goals. As a team, Ohio State totalled 13 assists.

Senior goalie Tom Carey had 13 saves on 22 shots on goal, while Michigan’s goalies had a combined six saves on 31 shots on goal. Overall shots were 49-34 in favor of the Wolverines, though the Buckeyes did not shoot the ball at all in the fourth.

Withers, who earned his 500th career faceoff win in the third quarter, won 20-of-23 faceoffs on the day. The Buckeyes collected 30 ground balls, led by Withers, who had 11 on his own. Michigan had 24 ground balls.

Next up, Ohio State returns to Columbus to take on No. 3 Maryland.

Another BOOOOOOM!

Ohio State already added a blue-chip BOOM before today’s Spring Game. And now, they’ve added another one.

2018 four-star safety Josh Proctor, out of Owasso, Oklahoma, tweeted that he has committed to Ohio State:

Respect it... Here I come Columbus ⭕#Shhhh18 pic.twitter.com/uukskfb8Vi

— Josh™ (@jproctor_2018) April 15, 2017

The 6’2, 190-pound Proctor is currently ranked as the seventh best safety in the country, the second best player from Oklahoma, and the 87th top recruit in the entire country. He picked Ohio State over Oklahoma, along with offers from Arkansas, Florida, Michigan, and others.

Proctor gives Ohio State their seventh commitment for the 2018 class, all ranked as blue-chip players at the moment. If this continues, the Buckeyes will be able to make a run at the top ranked class at not just in the Big Ten, but the country.

Ohio State had a massive recruiting class in 2017 for their defensive backfield, but given the rate that the Buckeyes are sending players to the NFL there, it should be another point of emphasis in the 2018 recruiting class.

You can review highlights of Proctor in action below, courtesy of Hudl:

Kevin Wilson comin’.

The 2016 Ohio State football offense left an awful lot to be desired.

While the numbers were defensible for the most part, anyone who frequently watched the team knew there was something fundamentally wrong.

With the offensive playcalling braintrust behind last year’s unit having departed Columbus and former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson now in charge of the offense, it’s reasonable to assume that things will get better sooner rather than later.

In a game of mostly glorified two-hand touch, the new Buckeye offensive think tank took the restrictor plate off early, resulting in an awesome halfback pass to OSU potential Heisman candidate quarterback J.T. Barrett.

Opposing defensive coordinators now have something else to think about as the 2017 regular season approaches:

With trick plays like this and the tight ends getting more than five yards of depth on their routes on more traditional play calls, it’s easy to see how this offense isn’t the same as the one that came before.

Better safe than sorry?

Trying to pry definitive insights from the spring game is always tricky, since the rules are a bit different. The rosters are mixed up, playcalling is different, there are no kickoffs, and also, it’s very literally a practice. But that doesn’t dampen fan interest.

But this year, it looks like that’s been taken to a new level, as the spring game started without tackling.

It’s one thing for quarterbacks to not take any contact. They’re wearing black jerseys for a reason, and nobody wants to get a QB hurt for a game that doesn’t matter. But during the first two drives of the game, nobody got tackled. Play would stop after any player, be it a wideout, running back, tight end, etc, got hit with two hands.

So if you like touchdown catches, sure, there are some of those. But no hits.

DOUBLE TAKE

— Ohio State Buckeyes (@OhioStAthletics) April 15, 2017

Maybe Ohio State will start tackling later in the game, once the presumed starters are out of the game. But if they don’t, maybe that isn’t the worst thing in the world, as it will limit the injury risk.

But it does mean that the event resembles an actual football game even less. And if you’re a fan who paid money and traveled to Columbus to watch a two-hand touch game, maybe that is something you would have wanted to know ahead of time?

And Tom Herman will be coming to watch him.

He’s in the NFL now, but that didn’t stop Cardale Jones from coming back and not just playing school, but beating it. And a familiar face will reportedly be in town to watch.

According to Bruce Feldman at FOX SPORTS, Texas head coach, and former Ohio State assistant Tom Herman will travel to Columbus to watch Jones graduate on May 7.

This is no small feat for Herman. Not only could he have recruiting obligations to work on that day, he could be hanging out some other pretty cool people.

"Migos & Chance the Rapper were gonna be here (in Austin) on Sunday, the 7th and wanted to meet me. I said 'No, I’m gonna be in Columbus.’

— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) April 15, 2017

This is a cool moment for Jones, whose entire career was reduced to an unfortunate “not here to play school” tweet early in his career by much of college football fandom. Now, he can boast a college degree, an NFL spot with the Buffalo Bills, and of course, his standing as one of the most beloved QBs in Ohio State history, one that led the team to an unlikely national title.

Congrats Cardale!

BOOOOOOOOM!

It’s barely 10 a.m. the morning of Ohio State’s Spring Game and Urban Meyer, Mark Pantoni, and the OSU recruiting braintrust are already at full throttle.

A little more than two and a half hours before the Buckeyes’ annual April scrimmage, the Bucks got the pledge of 4-star Franklin, TN offensive tackle Max Wray.

Wray checks in at 6'6 and a half and 289 pounds. He's currently the fourth highest graded offensive tackle in the 247Sports Composite and the third best player from the state of Tennessee. He's the 57th ranked overall prospect in the 2018 recruiting class. Wray picked the Buckeyes over offers from a slew of SEC powers, like Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU and Tennessee.

With Ed Warinner long since departed from coaching and developing OSU linemen and the Bucks paving a new path under Greg Studrawa, high rated offensive line prospects will certainly make the job of protecting Ohio State’s quarterbacks of the future that much easier.

Courtesy of our friends over at Hudl, here’s video highlights of what Wray will bring to the Buckeyes in 2018 (and beyond):

Folks, we have Buckeye football.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are back, with some spring football Saturday afternoon.

The Buckeyes are coming off of what was a great season up until the Fiesta Bowl loss to Clemson, but they’re back and still loaded with talent all around that we’ll be able to see at a sold out Ohio Stadium of 82,000. Around 20,000 seats will not be available on Saturday due to construction at the stadium.

Urban Meyer has always been big on getting fans to see the Bucks in the spring, and that’s no different this year.

"We're very fortunate to watch guys perform in front of a lot of people in the seats, a lot of people in the stands," Meyer told ESPN. "I love it. I love the fact these kids get to play in front of a group like that."

We should be seeing that on Saturday. As far as the teams go, Team Gray will be coached by Greg Schiano, with J.T. Barrett and Dwayne Haskins at quarterback. Others on the team include Parris Campbell, Binjimen Victor, and Mike Weber.

For Team Scarlet — coached by Kevin Wilson — Joe Burrow and Tate Martell with be quarterbacking. K.J. Hill, Austin Mack, and Demario McCall highlight just some of the players on their squad. You can view the full rosters here.

Here’s other information that you need to know.

Are there any special guests?

Urban Meyer has asked Nike Chairman Emeritus Phil Knight and former head coach Lou Holtz to be guest coaches for the game. Knight will be the honorary coach for Team Gray, and Holtz for team Scarlet.

Where can I park if I’m attending?

If you are attending the game, parking is free in lots around the stadium and on campus, except for the west stadium lot.

Can I still go, or is it too late?

Those who have already purchased tickets will be able to attend. If you are a student hoping to go, you will be able to get in with your BuckID, along with children under the age of 6.

How to watch

Game time: 12:30 p.m. ET
