LGHL Ohio State has been churning out picks in the past 10 NFL Drafts

Ohio State has been churning out picks in the past 10 NFL Drafts

From linebackers to defensive backs, the Buckeyes have sent a bunch of players to the next level.

“Defensive players have dominated the last 10 drafts for OSU, as three of the top four positions picked most often have been: 1. linebackers (12); 2. defensive backs (11); 4. defensive linemen (8).”

Tom Deinhart, BTN.com

With the NFL Draft starting in under a week, it’s time to get hyped about where this present group of Ohio State Buckeyes will end up going. From a stacked defensive back position (again) to the offensive line, there will be numerous Buckeyes that will hear their name called in Philadelphia at the draft.

But, OSU’s dominance on the defensive side of the ball has created a track record of Scarlet and Gray getting selected to play in the NFL. From Jim Tressel to Urban Meyer, the trend has continued — and with Meyer, the trend has skyrocketed.

BTN.com did the math, and worked out the last decade’s worth of Buckeye draft selections. Linebackers led the group with 12 members being picked, with Vernon Gholston (2008), Ryan Shazier (2014) and Darron Lee (2016) going in the first round. One selection behind the LB position was defensive back—which had 11 Buckeyes selected over the past 10 drafts. First rounders for DBs include Malcolm Jenkins (2009) and Bradley Roby (2015).

In this time frame, eight other Bucks have heard their name called in the first round of the NFL Draft, bringing the total to 13. The highest selected pick of them all? Joey Bosa, who was taken third in the draft last season.

With defensive backs Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley being predicted as high first round picks, the path to making it to the NFL clearly runs through Columbus, Ohio.

“Ohio State's inability to stretch the field with a vertical passing game is not a quick fix. There's not one play that Wilson can install to remedy the issue.”

Bill Landis, cleveland.com

With the spring game now in the rear view mirror, the Buckeyes had the chance to showcase their new players, coaches and schemes to Buckeye nation. Moving forward, one of the biggest schemes that needs to be worked on, one that was the bugaboo for the program last season, is in the passing department.

Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson have been brought into the coaching staff to try and sort out the issues in the passing game. At times last season, J.T. Barrett was soaring passes away from receivers, and receivers had issues handling Barrett’s passes that seemed semi-catchable.

Bill Landis of cleveland.com wrote about how there isn’t some magical fix to the Buckeyes passing woes — which have escalated since the team won the national championship in 2014. Actually, the fix really isn’t magical at all: it just takes synergy amongst the receivers and quarterback.

Landis talked about how quarterback coach Day and receivers coach Zach Smith had their respective positions break down film together, in hopes that with all the minds working together, they can understand one another when the ball is thrown on gameday.

While the problem isn’t fixed, yet, there is still summer camp left before the Buckeyes ramp up their efforts before the season starts against Indiana. In the past two seasons, the passing game has been one of the biggest reasons for why the Buckeyes missed getting back to the national championship game.

If that problem gets solved, then expect Ohio State to be in the driver’s seat for a playoff bid — and maybe even Barrett showing up as a Heisman finalist.

"I'll never get over it because you never do with those kind of losses," Saban told ESPN this week. "I never got over the returned field goal at Auburn. I never got over playing poorly against Ohio State and losing that game late.”

Nick Saban on the recent tough losses he’s had at Alabama, as reported by Chris Low, ESPN.com

College football offseason is taking form, but that doesn’t stop coaches from talking. Recently, Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban talked about the national title loss to Clemson — and some other notable losses he’s endured as the man in charge of Alabama.

While the ‘Kick Six’ loss to Auburn was mentioned, the one Buckeye nation might connect with the most is the 2015 Sugar Bowl. Playing poorly in the game was a reason why Saban said couldn’t get over the loss.

Did Alabama play poorly in the game, or were the Buckeyes just a better team than the Crimson Tide? The Buckeye defense forced three interceptions, and the offense outgained the Tide on rushing yards, passing yards, first downs and total offense.

The OSU offensive line also created this hole for Ezekiel Elliott to run through for 81 yards.

Was it a tough loss for ‘Bama? Absolutely. But it appears that Ohio State was just the better team that night in New Orleans.

Kenny G, making moves.

Kenny Guiton’s run in Austin with former Ohio State OC Tom Herman, the new head coach at Texas, appears to be a short one.

After the University of Houston dismissed their wide receivers coach, Guiton is going to replace him in the same role. This will mark Guiton’s first job as a full positional coach in the college ranks.

Guiton had been set to serve as an offensive quality control assistant, biding his time for a full positional opportunity and continuing to build coaching experience, at the University of Texas. He’d served in a variety of capacities as a graduate assistant for Herman prior when the two were at Houston.

This marks Guiton’s first non-NFL full time gig since his graduation from OSU. While never the Buckeyes’ starter, he famously led a come from behind late-in-game victory over Purdue while filling in for an injured Braxton Miller.

Best of luck Kenny G. Perhaps a coaching return to Columbus isn’t too far off in the future.

His Ottawa Senators are one win away from advancing to the second round of the playoffs for the first time and the second time since the team’s 2007 Stanley Cup Final appearance, so Eugene Melnyk joined Bob McCown and John Shannon on the Fan 590’s ‘Prime Time Sports’ to talk about the Senators’ performance thus far.

I did not transcribe the full interview simply because the hosts also delve into The Organ Project and how Melnyk will be inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, but if you’re interested in organ donation and helping to save lives, I encourage you to check out The Organ Project’s website.

The full interview can be listened to via the embedded audio player at the bottom of this post.

As always, my thoughts are in bold.

On the team doing well in the postseason and being up 3-1 in their series against Boston…

“Yeah, we’re in Boston now getting ready to get back, but yeah, we had a great game last night. We thought that we played really, really hard. It was close and it was pretty tough. The fans here are pretty brutal. Yeah, (we’re still in Boston) and had work to do here too, but yeah, coming back and getting ready for tomorrow night. It’s a big night for us, so we’re going to have quite the time and we’re hoping to play strong and hope everybody gets a little more healthier and that we’re competitive.”

Melnyk touches on a key point here: the health of his players. Although Erik Karlsson assuredly isn’t the only player who’s battling injuries, it’s imperative for the Senators to keep this series short and afford their franchise player the luxury of getting rest.

On telling his general manager to do whatever he needs to do to get into the postseason and whether he saw something in his club that the pundits did not…

“Well, I had the injury reports – that I always get – and at any one time, we kept getting these nagging injuries. You know, you had one guy out and we had a couple of tragedies as well that the team overcame – Craig Anderson’s wife was diagnosed with cancer and rightfully, he took the time off to be with her for a few months and we survived that with some great goaltending from the backups. And then Clarke MacArthur came out of nowhere to decide that he could play and he passed all of the testing – and it was very, very rigorous testing that we had to do on the guy because he had been out of hockey for almost two years and he comes back. We had (Erik) Karlsson then get hurt then we had (Marc) Methot’s finger sliced off, so it was a whole bunch of stuff and now we’re finally getting back to where we almost have a full roster. You’re never going to be able to get a full one, but people are all healing and we’re only going to get better as time goes on. So getting through this series, if we can win this, I think we’re going to be very strong towards the second and third rounds.”

Heading into the series against the Bruins, the Bruins looked to have a massive advantage in their underlying numbers, but the healthy returns of a few players coupled with injuries to Boston’s blue line have helped mitigate the clear puck possession advantage Boston had.

Through the first four games, the Senators have posted these aggregated five-on-five numbers (via NaturalStatTrick.com):

CF% 50.57
SF% 53.66
FF% 52.07
GF% 58.33
SCF% 48.05

Some may downplay Ottawa’s success or question their ability to win games in subsequent rounds simply because they haven’t dominated a decimated Bruins team territorially, but who cares?

The numbers are also a function of Guy Boucher’s 1-3-1 counterpunch system that helps the opposition hang around the Senators in low-scoring games.

Even if they’re not dominating the Bruins, I’ll enjoy the wins as they come because the Senators are up three games to one and with every game being decided by one-goal, the Senators should consider themselves to be fortunate that they have a series advantage at this point.

I suppose the real danger would come if the Senators won a round or two and ownership and/or management focused explicitly on the results instead of the process and romanticized the composition of this roster – believing it to be closer to a contender’s status than it actually is without addressing their obvious shortcomings – but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it whenever the season is over.

In the meantime, savour the postseason success.

On having to go back years to find a player who has dominated a series like Erik Karlsson has…

“Yeah, you’ve almost got to go back, and I hate to do this, but you’ve got to go back to Wayne (Gretzky) almost.”

Holy shit.

On looking at the defence position and believing that no one has dominated a series like this since Bobby Orr…

“You know what, yes. You’re just killing my salary cap, but you’ve got to say that. The guy is phenomenal and the man is hurt. It’s just phenomenal how well he’s doing and how he just will grin and bear it and go out and play as much as he can as well as he can. But, he’s getting better too. I think (his health) is at 75-percent now, but God watch him. When he’s at 100-percent, he still pumps up the team. You know you’ve got some veterans in there now as well: you’ve got (Clarke) MacArthur in there; Chris Kelly was brought in; you’ve got (Dion) Phaneuf in there pumping everybody up. So you’ve got some young players who need that desperately and when you see all that come together, you start daydreaming about all sorts of things. We’re just lucky day-to-day to make sure that we don’t get any major injuries and that we can continue on grinding it out. All these series, if you look at them all, none of them are total blowouts. Everything is a grind. Everything is down to the final minute and anything can happen. It’s nerve-wracking and exhausting and I’m just sitting in the stands, never mind these guys (actually playing the game).”

Holy shit. First a Gretzky comp and now an Orr.

Not bad for a guy who is allegedly playing at 75-percent health. Hell, just when you think there isn’t anything that could make his first round performance any more legendary, Melnyk drops this nugget of information.

On the doubts of naming Erik Karlsson years ago and how he really has grown in the role…

“He has. He’s matured a hell of a lot. He now takes leadership much more seriously than anyone else. It’s taken some time to get recognition that he really is responsible and it is his team that he has to fire up. You see that on the bench, him yelling at others and stuff, that’s all good. But then again, look you go back to Toronto, (watch) Auston Matthews all of sudden (be) captain and look what he does. You never know with these guys. At the time when Karlsson was named captain, we were in the meeting with him and basically he was asked, ‘Are you ready to be the captain because we don’t think so,’ and he made his case. We’ve let him take a shot at it and once a captain is appointed, it’s tough to take it back so you better be sure that this guy can mature in it and he certainly has now as a leader.”

There’s so much going in here with this paragraph.

It’s hilarious that the Senators gave Karlsson the captaincy even though the organization had its own reservations about his ability to handle the job. Considering how the organization bungled the Daniel Alfredsson negotiations, they probably wanted to placate their best player and keep him happy.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing and by Melnyk’s last sentence, I wonder if the Senators ever had thoughts about stripping Karlsson of the ‘C’, but this is Karlsson’s team now and he definitely has matured into the role.

On another note, Melnyk realizes that the Leafs don’t have a captain, right?

On being a little disappointed in Bobby Ryan’s performance since he was acquired and how he looks revitalized in the first round…

“Well, you have to go back to who he is and who he was. When he came out of the juniors, this guy was a superstar and people had big plans for him. Then it took a turn downwards for a little bit. We acquired him, he was all ready to go, ‘Hot, hot, hot!’ He just went through some personal stuff and typical hockey stuff, then he had a significant death in his family – his mother – and it ends up, now all of a sudden I think, his injuries are gone and his mental state is at the 150-percent and he’s just playing what everyone expected him (at) five or six years ago. He is now what we were hoping for when we acquired him, so it doesn’t surprise us but it does surprise us.”

Ryan’s performance thus far is fantastic for a couple of reasons: 1) he’s obviously contributing to the Senators’ on-ice success; and 2) if the Senators ever had any intention of moving on from Ryan, there’s no better platform for him to perform well on than the Stanley Cup playoffs.

With five years left on his deal that carries an average annual value of $7.25-million, Ryan’s contract is going to be difficult to move.

Maybe he has overcome his ailments and the personal tragedies that have afflicted him, but at 30-years old, I have a hard time believing that a now 30-year old who doesn’t skate particularly well is going to have an easy time avoiding the natural aging curve and diminished production that we see so often from these types of players.

On Ryan being the second overall pick behind Sidney Crosby at the 2005 NHL Draft…

“He was. He was number two. You’re not getting Sidney right now, but imagine that, he was right behind him and I think (the decision of Crosby or Ryan at no. 1) was the flip of the coin back then.”

A coin flip? The only way it was a coin flip was if the coin had ‘Crosby’ written on both sides of it.

I have to stop thinking back to the 2005 NHL Draft before the Brian Lee memories seep in… ah, fuck!

On hiring Guy Boucher and the belief that of all the players on the roster, Bobby Ryan would have struggled under the most with this structure and how it probably took time for them to bond…

“Yes, it absolutely does and I think that everybody else has bought into Guy’s program, his structure, the way to play the game properly and (the players) have seen that it actually does work. It’s not the most exciting hockey. This almost reminds me of the New Jersey team that won the Stanley Cup. They were not exciting. They were boring, but they won. It’s like Buckley’s cough syrup, it tastes like hell but it works! In this case, yeah, you have a guy freewheeling and that was his style and to bring him down into a structured environment, it takes time but once it clicks, you’ve got a very powerful player and that’s what we’re starting to see with Bobby right now.”

I don’t understand why the Senators owner, who fired and is being sued by the organization’s former Chief Marketing Officer for his failure to fill the Canadian Tire Centre with butts in the seats, is on the nation’s biggest sports radio program and openly admitting that his hockey team plays a boring and unentertaining brand of hockey that is reminiscent of the 1990’s era New Jersey Devils.

On when he took an equity position with Buckley’s cough syrup…

“Yeah, I’m trying, but it does work. So, I’m very happy with the way the team is going. I predicted, if you remember – maybe if you go back just under a year ago at the end of last season – I told you about what I thought of the Leafs and I said, ‘I think they’re going to be very competitive.’ Everybody opened up their eyes and said, ‘Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah.’ Sure enough, they’re coming forward and they’re playing seriously good hockey and I think our team is very competitive this year as well. In this part of the season, once you get past the first round, anything can happen in the next three rounds. Anything. We just have these daydreams and we hope that it works out and we’ll just keep grinding.”

I get that Melnyk’s on a Toronto radio station, but I wish he could shake that habit of bringing up the Leafs in every interview that he does. It’s an annoying and unnecessary pattern of behaviour that exemplifies the obsession and insecurities that many fans have towards Toronto.

On the frequency of these low-scoring games and their entertainment value and whether as an owner, he only cares about wins and losses or whether he also cares about their entertainment value…

“Oh, that’s a tough question. You jumped all over the place. You went from the NHL to what I think and they do (care). Listen, you know me, I don’t defend them that much, but in this case, they’ve done everything they can to get us higher scoring. It’s just that teams come up with ways to make it not higher scoring. There’s a big risk when you go into a game and there are various schools of thoughts on this with some very serious hockey players that say, ‘Hey, our best way to win is to plow out offence. To hell with the back, I don’t care. Put four forwards out there and score, score, score, score,’ and hopefully you get seven, they get five and you win the game. Others, like Guy, have a style that says, ‘No, we’ll wait for them to make a mistake, be opportunistic, jump in and try to score one goal and then protect, protect, protect.’ From my perspective as a fan, I’d want the 7-5 game, but from a winning (standpoint), it’s proven that with the systems that they have in place for a defensive game, wins games. They’re exciting in that they’re nerve-wracking, but it’s a lot more fun seeing eight to 10 goals a game. But, I’ll take the win anytime over an entertaining loss.”

Ideally, your team is malleable and can win playing a variety of styles that you can shape to the opposition, but looking back at Ottawa’s problems over the past few years, they’ve had success playing a run-and-gun style as much as they’ve enjoyed success playing in Boucher’s 1-3-1.

Although this modest success has been there, the reservations I’ve had for the past few years are still the same as they are under Boucher. Irrespective of this team’s success in the postseason, I still have a hard time believing the personnel in place is good enough for this team to create a window of contention that will afford this team the opportunities it needs to win a Stanley Cup.

On how Tom Anselmi is doing…

“He’s doing alright. He’s busy. He couldn’t even make it out here to Boston for the game because he’s got a whole bunch of stuff he’s got to do today. He couldn’t afford getting in at 2:00 in the morning, but he’s doing fine. We’ve got a lot of work to do. A lot of restructuring and stuff like that and we’re now working on LeBreton (Flats) and those negotiations, so he’s zipping around and he’s busy. We’ve got him busy.”

I would have loved to hear more about the organizational restructuring going. I wish the hosts followed up on this.

The Buckeyes will host UNC-Greensboro this weekend before embarking on the second half of the Big Ten schedule.

Ohio State baseball has hit the bye week in its Big Ten schedule at the exact midpoint of conference play. Four series in the rearview, four still to come. And at 4-8 in those games already played, the Buckeyes currently occupy ninth place in the standings, some two games out of the top eight and a return to the Big Ten tournament for an opportunity to defend their title.

The club’s inconsistency is clearly wearing on everyone involved.

“If they ain’t got it by this point — we’re 15-22 — if they ain’t got it figured out that they’ve got to play better,” head coach Greg Beals told The Lantern. “Then I don’t know if I can help them.”

If the first half of the conference slate has been an uphill battle for Ohio State, the four series on the horizon have the makings of Mount Everest. The Buckeyes will host Nebraska and Indiana and hit the road to take on Michigan and Iowa, all four of whom are ahead of the team both in the standings and in quality of on-field performance.

Throw in a pair of upcoming midweek games against consensus national top-five Texas Tech and this weekend’s three-game series with a battle-tested UNC-Greensboro, and the final month of the season is certain to test the mettle of every young man wearing scarlet and gray.

The questions that loomed over the club before the season began have largely played out to the detriment of the club. Back in February, there was uncertainty about the offense’s ability to score runs, which has proven to be Ohio State’s achilles heel. The Buckeyes are averaging fewer than five runs per game, and even that number is a bit deceiving. The 13 runs the team scored last Sunday against Michigan State was nearly double the combined total from the previous four games.

With results like that, bright spots have been few and far between. One has been junior center fielder Tre’ Gantt, who has been by far the most consistent member of Ohio State’s lineup. With a .300/.410/.446 slash line and team-high marks in hits, runs scored, and doubles, Gantt has made the kind of jump on the field in his third year in the program that one would expect to see.

Alongside him, freshman Dominic Canzone has been impressive, fighting off an extremely slow start to emerge as perhaps the biggest run-producing threat for the Buckeyes. Canzone, who was a Louisville Slugger High School All-American before landing in Columbus, has a .333/.389/.476 triple-slash, with two triples, three doubles, two home runs, and 16 runs batted in. That production has come in part-time duty, having played in 29 of 36 games with 19 starts, but he seems to have anchored himself into the middle of the order for the remainder of the season.

Though the offense was suspect entering the season, the pitching staff was believed to be the club’s biggest strength. It has turned out to be the most disappointing aspect of the team amid a season of disappointment. Injuries and a lack of execution have landed Ohio State in the bottom half of the Big Ten in most of the important statistical categories, and have often led to large early deficits in games that the bats have had no possibility of overcoming.

It seems every player that has taken the ball has had moments they would like to forget. Even among the most consistent pitchers, there have been command issues, a loss of focus, runs given up in bunches, and leads given away. The starting rotation, which looked to be team’s foundation, has become a weekly patchwork.

Adam Niemeyer, a redshirt junior and team co-captain, had early-season struggles and has been battling an elbow injury. Redshirt senior Jake Post, who has been the steadiest member of the mound corps, has dealt with back issues and last weekend took a comebacker to the head. Sophomore Ryan Feltner has never found his command, and despite having the stuff to be a top-flight starter, had to be removed from the rotation.

Redshirt junior Yianni Pavlopoulos lost his job as the team’s closer, and has had solid moments as a spot starter. Sophomore Connor Curlis has looked like a world-beater in midweek starts and out of the bullpen at times, but struggled when he was given a chance on the weekend. Juniors Austin Woodby and Reece Calvert have made spot starts as well, but neither has shown the ability to consistently put zeroes on the scoreboard, though Calvert’s most recent outing in East Lansing was encouraging.

All of this is to say, with one month and 20 games remaining, asking Ohio State to suddenly put it all together may be too tall a request. The Buckeyes have been plagued by inconsistency since the opening weekend of the season. It seems at this point that’s just this team’s identity.

A ballclub can get hot, though, and we’ve reached the “now or never” moment in 2017 for this squad. Having just begun a nine-game homestand with Wednesday night’s severely disappointing loss to Northern Kentucky, Ohio State must treat each game as a must-win. Because the reality is, each game is.

UNC Greensboro Spartans (22-14, 8-4 in the Southern Conference)

Fifth-year head coach Link Jarrett is well on his way to guiding UNCG to another strong season. In 2016, the Spartans won 38 games, the most for the program since 2003, and in 2017 have proven to be strong contenders in the Southern Conference. Greensboro is currently second in the SoCon standings behind a Mercer team that leads the nation in wins and finds itself on the fringe of the national rankings.

But the Spartans enter the weekend in Columbus having lost four of their last five games, and much like the Buckeyes, the offense has been experiencing a run-shortage. For the season, the club is averaging nearly 7.5 runs per game, though, so they’ll be looking to get healthy against the much-maligned Ohio State pitching staff.

Eight of the team’s regulars are hitting .288 or better, with five of those at .331 or better. Freshman Caleb Webster has tortured opposing pitching, slashing .436/.469/.609, and leads the team with 11 doubles. Sophomore Andrew Moritz has been similarly hellish for opponents, with team-highs in hits, runs scored, and triples.

Fellow sophomore Cesar Trejo has been the breakout power hitter for UNCG, mashing seven home runs and driving in 38, while redshirt senior Michael Goss has a team-high 16 extra-base hits and places second with 30 RBIs and a .603 slugging percentage.

The Spartan bats have had to score runs in droves in order to win ballgames, though, because the pitching staff has given up an average of more than six per contest. With a 5.38 team earned run average and opponents hitting a mind-boggling .324 against them, Jarrett’s hurlers have been the decided weak link for the team.

The weekend rotation is anchored by a pair of young arms in sophomore Matt Frisbee and junior Bryce Hensley. Frisbee, a right-hander, has been the most effective, sporting a 5-2 record with a 3.61 ERA in nine starts. He has held opponents to a .222 average, and yields just 1.11 walks and hits per inning.

Hensley is right behind him in terms of pure numbers, going 5-4 with a 4.20 ERA in his nine starts. The lefty is hit at a .246 clip by the opposition, has a 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and records roughly one punchout per inning.

The final starter of the weekend is junior righty Dan Loats, who has split time between the bullpen and a starting role. In nine appearances, including seven starts, he’s 3-2 with a 5.53 ERA, one save, and better than a punchout per inning.

UNCG’s bullpen is held down by a pair of junior righties in Andrew Wantz and Chad Sykes. Wantz has appeared in a team-high 17 games, going 5-2 with four saves and a 4.47 ERA, limiting opposing hitters to a .227 average and striking out better than a batter per inning pitched. Sykes has been hit a bit harder, possessing a 4.79 ERA and .289 batting average against, but has saved seven games and also struck out more than one hitter an inning.

Ohio State has yet to win more than two games in a row all season long, but will have an opportunity to do so in game one with the Spartans on Friday night. Having reached the home stretch, the Buckeyes need to play their best baseball from here on out if they hope to salvage their season.

The Buckeyes make the cut again for a top DB.

It’s been nearly a week since the Ohio State football program showcased the future of the program at the spring game. The general feedback from the game was “talent galore”, which has been a strong theme in Columbus ever since Coach Urban Meyer’s arrival. It seems that every Spring a new name arises as the next in line “playmaker”. The 2017 season looks to be no different, and while the staff and players await the start of fall camp, recruiting once again takes priority—which is always the case when Meyer is in charge.

Cook names his final Top 10

It’s almost like it can’t be said enough, but Ohio State has truly built an NFL factory in the recent years in the defensive back unit. With this year’s NFL Draft cementing that statement, Meyer and his position coaches of Kerry Coombs and Greg Schiano have to be flexing their muscles loving what this success is bringing not only to their former guys, but present and future guys as well.

Yesterday, the Buckeyes made the cut again when a top ranked prospect, Anthony Cook, a Houston native, placed Ohio State in his top 10 schools list that he will be considering before a final decision. Cook, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound cornerback is currently listed as the second best corner in his class and the best overall player in Texas for 2018, according to 247sports. Obviously a top target for anyone, the five-star narrowed it down to Florida State, Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida, USC, LSU, Baylor, Texas, Georgia, and Ohio State via his Twitter.

Thank You GOD for putting me in this Position!! Without You I am nothing. After praying on it, I have decided to focus on these schools pic.twitter.com/mVkaHDqKX9

— Anthony Cook (@_ACook21) April 20, 2017

With ten schools making the cut, the race is on for his commitment, but if three schools are currently sticking out the most, according to the 247sports crystal ball predictions, it’s Texas, LSU and Ohio State. Fortunately for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes, Cook knows exactly just how high caliber OSU is in developing their defensive backs. With the recent news of a Houston based satellite camp this coming summer featuring Ohio State, Meyer is using every possible way to spend time with Cook. Will it be enough to seal the deal though? Time will only tell.

Bucks make the cut

The Buckeyes are off to a hot start in their 2018 class when it comes to the offensive tackle position. With a recent commitment from Max Wray and the ever so popular saga and pursuit of in-state five-star Jackson Carman, the 2018 class is sure to be one that the Buckeyes can’t afford to miss out on in the trenches.

Late Wednesday night, another top prospect from the offensive tackle position placed the Buckeyes in his final top six schools that he will be considering before his final call.

Rasheed Walker, a 6-foot-5, 280-pound prospect from Waldorf, Md. narrowed his list down to Rutgers, Penn State, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Ohio State.

The North Point High School product has nearly 30 coveted offers. Trimming his list to a final six has to be tough, but Walker is ready to focus on those he feels best suit his needs.

Looking ahead a bit

While the Buckeyes are certainly focusing on their 2018 recruiting class, Meyer has been quoted several times saying recruiting is a never ending business. With that in mind, it’s easy to see how the staff is looking ahead to the 2019 class even when 2018 is obviously the main priority.

Yesterday, in an article with Bucknuts.com, contributor Bill Kurelic took the time to write about one in-state 2019 prospect that is hoping to hear heavily from Ohio State. Lakota West star Steven Faucheux recently visited Ohio State to see the Buckeyes on April 1 and since then has been a hot topic for the 2019 class. The 6-foot-5, 272-pound defensive end is really starting to see his recruitment take off, as he already has eight offers.

Always good to hear the Ohio State Buckeyes are going to recruit you heavy if you are a top Ohioan. https://t.co/vdu217Xn3e

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) April 20, 2017

One school he is clearly wanting to earn an offer from is the home team Ohio State Buckeyes, but he also was quoted as wanting to draw interest from other Big Ten and SEC programs as well. While Steven will continue to rise on the recruiting trail, geographic recruiter Kerry Coombs and the rest of the staff will certainly continue building their relationship hoping to keep the Ohio border as strong as ever.

Game Thread Spring Game, Sat 04/15/17 @ 12:30 ET (BTN)

I have no doubt about Wilson. He made Indiana a threat to pull off the BIG upset every time they took the field. I'm not technically qualified to express an opinion on Beck. I do know he was supposed to bring talent in from Texas and it looks like he did. Actual coaching may have been beyond his grasp - someday someone is going to write a book about what happened to that 2015 team and eyes will be opened. And Warriner... the line play improved so much once he replaced Bollman and remained good until he had to be saddled with Beck's job. So I'm thinking either he was a victim of Beck's inability, or Bollman was so bad that Warriner looked fantastic.
Interesting take. I think you have some here when it comes to Warriner having to compensate. We were forewarned by Alex on here about how bad Beck was and boy it played out right in front of our eyes.

Beck could recruit but we didn't need a recruiter we needed a coach and that didn't happen. As a result Becks responsibilities seemed to shrink as his two years unfolded and more was put on Warriners plate. Which is why I think we saw the offensive line deteriorate these past two years as well.

Warriner should've never been relieved as the OL coach and when it was clear that Beck didn't A) understand our system and B) couldn't pull his weight it became impossible for Warriner (who was in over his head running solo) to keep both the OL and the offense running up to snuff.

Back on topic though... Once Wilson was stupidly fired by IU I really knew we needed him. It was like when Tressel resigned and we all knew UFM was sitting at home. Perfect match in both situations.

LGHL Ohio State will look to Damon Webb for senior leadership

Ohio State will look to Damon Webb for senior leadership

The safety from Detroit will look to build on a junior season that trended upward.

“Right now, the guy who performed like a starter is Damon Webb. He had his best stretch of football that I’ve ever seen in him, and I haven’t seen that much, but from what I’ve seen, it was his best stretch of football. He has a look about him, a focus that I think is going to be a huge summer for him. He’s going to come back and have a great senior year.”

Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano via Jacob Myers, The Lantern

With Malik Hooker, Gareon Conley, and Marshon Lattimore all leaving for the NFL following the 2016 season, there will be plenty of new faces in the secondary in 2017. The lone starter from the 2016 team who will be back in the defensive backfield is senior safety Damon Webb. While Hooker, Conley, and Lattimore got most of the publicity, Webb put together a solid season, being named honorable mention All-Big Ten after recording an interception and 52 tackles. Now Webb is earning some high praise from the coaching staff as he heads into his final season in Columbus.

Even though it is just Greg Schiano’s second season on the job at Ohio State, he says that Webb is playing the best football that he has seen from him, and is primed for a big 2017. Cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs says Webb is probably the smartest player on the defense, and the Buckeyes will definitely need the senior leadership from Webb in a secondary that will feature a lot of youth in 2017. Webb was originally recruited to Ohio State as a cornerback, but with the talent the Buckeyes have had at corner the last few years, it was decided that Webb’s talents would best be utilized at safety. With just one season left with the Buckeyes, Webb hopes that he can put together a strong season, and hopefully join his trio of fellow starters from the 2016 team in the NFL next year.

“I’ve always felt you needed to work the field with a physical running game. You need to be physical and (pass) protect, and then the ball has to get horizontal and vertical. You need to make the defenses defend the width of the field and the length of the field.”

Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Even though Ohio State brought in another strong recruiting class this year, the most important addition during the offseason for the Buckeyes has been of offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. After Ohio State struggled to find their offense for much of the last half of the 2016, Wilson was brought in to try and light a spark under quarterback J.T. Barrett and the rest of the offense. One area where Wilson has already spent a lot of time, is Ohio State’s deep passing attack. Last year Barrett and the Ohio State wide receivers struggled to find any openings down the field. Things have been different during spring practices, with Wilson estimating the Buckeyes completed 40 percent of their deep throws.

Cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs has noticed a difference in the Ohio State offense during spring practices, with the most notable difference being with the tempo of the offense. Wilson and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day tried to utilize the deep passing game in spring practices, hoping to build some confidence inside a wide receiver corps that underperformed last year. With Ohio State already having a strong running game in place, if Wilson can get the Buckeye passing game going and keep opposing defense on their toes, Ohio State will again before a force to be reckoned with in the national title race.

“We might stretch to 10, we might end up going to 10 guys playing, it depends on the situation that we are in. We could see 10 guys playing.”

Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson via Patrick Murphy, Bucknuts

Ohio State does have areas on defense where they have to replace key contributors from last year, but the defensive line isn’t one of those areas. Last year the Buckeyes were able to rotate six to seven defensive linemen throughout the year, and they’ll likely see that number grow this year. Tyquan Lewis, Jalyn Holmes, Sam Hubbard, and Nick Bosa are some of the key defensive linemen returning, and that’s just on the ends of the line. Starters Dre’Mont Jones and Michael Hill also return, along with Robert Landers and Davon Hamilton. Tracy Sprinkle was showing signs of making some noise on the interior of the defensive line before an injury in the season opener sidelined him for the year.

The Buckeyes also have a number of young players who haven’t really seen the field yet who are itching to make a name for themselves. Players like Jashon Cornell, Malik Barrow, Jonathon Cooper, and incoming high school All-American Chase Young all have a bunch of untapped potential which could continue the strong defensive line play after the current starters exhaust their college eligibility. What makes the current rotation of defensive linemen, as well as those who are still fighting for time on the field, so strong is their versatility. With the ability of many of the defensive linemen to play multiple positions, it’ll keep the defensive line fresh and wear on opposing offenses throughout the game. If all these players play up to their potential, it’ll be a long season for the offensive lines going up against the Buckeyes.

“We have the most depth that we’ve had at the position since I’ve been here. I’m extremely excited about the totality of the room.”

Ohio State cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs via Ben Axelrod, Land of 10

Cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs might not have the number of returning starters that defensive line coach Larry Johnson has, but Coombs is still very impressed by the depth Ohio State has at cornerback. Pretty impressive considering the Buckeyes saw cornerbacks taken in the first round of the NFL Draft in 2014 and 2016, and likely will see at least one taken in the first round of next week’s draft. Coombs essentially considers Denzel Ward a returning starter for the amount of time he spent on the field last year, now the big questions is who will line up opposite Ward.

Redshirt sophomore Damon Arnette impressed during spring practices, but he has a number of incoming cornerbacks who will challenge him for playing time. After originally starting his college career at Alabama, JUCO transfer Kendall Sheffield hopes he can insert himself into the cornerback rotation early on. Top cornerback prospects Jeffrey Okudah and Shaun Wade will challenge Sheffield and certainly make preseason practices interesting when it comes to depth chart positioning. While it isn’t hard to get Coombs excited about anything, it says a lot when he thinks this might be the best batch of corners he has seen since being in Columbus.
