The Virginia native left Columbus with a chance to play for the Buckeyes.

Hitting the recruiting trail hard, Virginia has been one of the states the Ohio State football program has been trying to build a pipeline into over the last few years. A state full of talent, the Buckeyes aren’t done trying to plant their flag in the Old Dominion State just yet.

Coming off a recent verbal pledge from one of Virginia’s top recruits, 2018 linebacker Teradja Mitchell, the Buckeyes have now dealt an offer out to a standout defender from the junior class.

Locking in the scholarship from the OSU coaching staff on Saturday during a visit to the Columbus, Ohio campus, 2019 four-star weak-side defensive end Brandon Smith adds the Buckeyes to an already impressive list of college opportunities.

Great visit today! Blessed and honored to receive an offer from The Ohio State University! @OhioStateFB @CoachBillDavis #GoBucks #buckeyes pic.twitter.com/YC6NyszAbW

— Brandon Smith (@brand0n_smith12) June 24, 2017

With well over a dozen offers on the table from programs such as Florida State, Notre Dame, Penn State and Virginia Tech, the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder isn’t holding his chance to play for Urban Meyer, Bill Davis and the Buckeyes lightly.

“Coach Davis extended the offer during my visit. I have been talking with Coach Davis since he visited my school. Definitely means a lot and it's a special offer that I am thankful for. (When I think of Ohio State) I think of rich football tradition,” Smith stated to Land-Grant Holy Land.

While some recruits would’ve been just happy with the offer, the visit to Ohio State gave the All-Conference selection a whole new look into the program.

“The visit went great as a whole. I definitely like the facilities and the whole man concept is definitely nice,” he added on his time at OSU.

Smith, who is listed as a lineman, will first get a shot to play linebacker if he chooses to continue his playing days at Ohio State. A solid pass rusher, last season as a sophomore at Louisa County High School in Mineral, Va., Brandon, the sixth weak-side defensive end and 72nd overall prospect in the 2019 class, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, accounted for 75 total tackles, 10 quarterback sacks and three forced fumbles to help pace the Lions to an overall record of 8-3.

Highlights

The Buckeyes are still looking for their first 2019 commitment. Will Brandon Smith be it? Stick with the Land-Grant Holy Land recruiting team for the latest developments.

Buckeyes make the cut for 2018 CB

With plans to announce his college commitment in the coming weeks, 2018 cornerback Ken Montgomery Jr. of Tampa’s Hillsborough High, took to this Twitter page on Sunday afternoon to share his top six to the world.

Now left to fight it out for the 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior, are Alabama, OSU, Penn State, UCLA, Ole Miss and Oklahoma.

2.Ohio State
3.Penn State
4.UCLA
5.Ole Miss
6.Oklahoma
Commitment Next month‼️

— Ken Montgomery Jr (@KenKensmiley5) June 25, 2017

A three-star prospect, if Montgomery surprisingly selects the Buckeyes in July, he would join a star studded group of defensive backs in Ohio State’s 2018 class. Already holding pledges from fellow Sunshine State corner Sevyn Banks, and safeties Jaiden Woodbey and Josh Proctor, his commitment would certainly help keep OSU as the number one overall recruiting class after they recently jumped past the Miami Hurricanes for the top spot.

OSU might have an easier type replacing the versatile Curtis Samuel with two players vs. one.

Curtis Samuel was arguably the most versatile, and explosive, college football player in the country last season. Lining up in both the slot and the backfield, Samuel converted his 97 rushes and 74 receptions into 1,636 total yards and 15 touchdowns. A dominant combine performance confirmed his elite athleticism and helped him get drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the 2nd round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Ohio State now must find a way to replace what was often the offense’s only “get out of jail free” card last season. Samuel’s combination of big statistical performances and timely plays in massive moments is unmatched on the Buckeyes’ current roster, and it’s hard to find a player with the skill set to replace everything he brought to the offense.

But do the Buckeyes really need to find just one player to replace Samuel? A look at Urban Meyer’s past Ohio State offenses shows that he’s historically leaned on more than one player to fulfill everything he asks of his H-backs. The desire to create explosive plays in both the air and ground game with the H-back resulted in the Buckeyes splitting touches from 2012-2015. One player has typically worked as the dominant receiver and the other as the rusher. Only in 2016 did Meyer trust and enable one player to do both:

osu_h_backs.jpg

It’s important to note that Ohio State has largely adapted their rushing offense to their personnel on a season-by-season basis. Last season was a three-headed monster consisting of J.T. Barrett, Mike Weber, and Samuel. 2015 and 2013 were dominated by QB - RB duos, while 2014 and 2012 had a bit more of a committee approach. Last season the coaches leaned on Samuel’s unique ability as a running back, and this is a key reason why he was picked ahead of everyone else on this list in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Samuel’s receiving numbers are where things get interesting. His production was eerily similar to what past H-back duos have produced at Ohio State. It’s not a stretch to say that the Buckeyes likely didn’t plan on Samuel leading the team in receiving last season, but a lack of production from the other receivers, along with Samuel’s own talent, made this a reality.

Assuming that Ohio State doesn’t have a Samuel clone waiting in the wings, who makes the most sense to fill the H-back role in 2017? As was the case in 2012 - 2015, it seems optimal for the Buckeyes to turn to two players to fill Meyer’s H-back role.

Parris Campbell

Campbell has been this off-season’s most-hyped Buckeye. A move to H-back has Campbell feeling at home in his natural position, and he’s already being dubbed this season’s breakout star. Campbell has been on the field for 16 games over the past two seasons, though he's only managed to put together 175 total yards on his 17 offensive touches.

Still, it’s easy to see why Campbell has earned the coach’s trust at H-back. His ability with the ball in his hands is special:

Campbell’s game-breaking speed should test the back end of secondaries across the Big Ten this season. The rest of his game is a bit of a question mark. Drops and injuries hurt any chances he had of playing time in 2015, while his involvement last season was mostly limited to misdirection runs and blocking.

Campbell is now in his fourth year with the Buckeyes, but he's still a bit of an unknown. He hasn’t had a chance to show what he can do with an ample amount of touches, but he’ll have every chance to establish himself as a top-three option in the offense this season. Considering he’s almost exclusively lined up on the outside over the past three seasons, it seems likely that Campbell will work as the Buckeyes’ primary receiving H-back.

Demario McCall

‘Super’ Demario is deserving of this fantastic nickname thanks to his elite speed and agility. Standing at 5’ 9.5” and weighing in at 171 pounds, McCall is undersized but still capable of running between the tackles thanks to his Samuel-esque nastiness.

McCall actually had three-times the amount of touches in his true freshman season as Campbell has had in his career, though this is a bit misleading. McCall only received touches in five separate blowouts when the Buckeyes were already up by 40-plus points. For this reason, his electrifying runs should be taken with a grain of salt, but it’s clear the guy has plenty of talent:

McCall has the speed to erase defender’s angles and the agility to make solid tacklers look silly in the open field. He showed soft hands out of the backfield and has been linked to getting some snaps out of the slot this season. Still, McCall has made it clear he prefers to work out as a running back and he represents the Buckeyes’ best option at replacing Samuel’s as the offense’s scat-back out of the backfield.

Ideally, McCall will become polished enough as a receiver to be able to motion into the slot and create mismatches with safeties. His size could make a full-time transition to the slot more difficult than it was for Samuel, but McCall’s tantalizing potential and ability makes one thing clear above all else: get him the ball.

Samuel’s offensive production from last season will be nearly impossible to replace with just one player. After all, slot receivers with the ability to run between the tackles don’t just fall off of trees. Look for the Buckeyes to feature two of their most explosive playmakers, Parris Campbell and Demario McCall, in both the passing and running game instill some explosiveness to the offense. Neither player may wind up with Samuel’s lofty statistical totals, but then again, who has?

tBBC Senators Draft Alex Formenton 47th Overall

Senators Draft Alex Formenton 47th Overall

Formenton_TW_CHL_8405-e1487611233915.jpg

With the second round pick that they acquired from the Calgary Flames for Curtis Lazar, the Senators selected Alex Formenton from the OHL’s London Knights with the 47th overall selection.

His point totals leave something to be desired. In 65 games, he tallied 16 goals and 34 points, but because of his late birthday (September 13,, 1999), Formenton’s one of the youngest players in the draft. Playing on a relatively strong London team, he played fewer minutes behind older and more talented players.

The 6’1” and 161 lb left winger was NHL Central Scouting’s 29th ranked North American skater, but most publications had him ranked anywhere between the early 30’s and late 60’s.

Formenton was Corey Pronman’s 49th ranked skater and the Recrutes.ca draft guide had him ranked at 42.

According to their write up:

“Formenton is one of those prospects that impresses scouts a lot more the first time he’s seen live than when they watch him on video or look at the stats sheet, predominantly because it soon becomes apparent just how fast he moves around the rink.

“He’s a great skater, he has got a great long stride,” noted one scout. “In a straight line there may not be any prospects faster…but he’s more of a straight-ahead skater than an agile one… he’s not going to dangle you too often. There will be some guys that leave London this year and he’ll step into a little bit better role. He has average creativity though, I wouldn’t expect him to become a big assists guy.”

He had scouts salivating at the start of the season due to his explosive skating skills and exciting rushes, but upon repeated viewings it became apparent that he had trouble finishing plays or paying the ultimate price to get to the scoring areas, perhaps because of his youth.

His skating skills and size combo alone will likely get him picked in the top 50, and perhaps even in the top 40.

“He has a good shot to go along with that speed, but he is likely a third line guy,” added another NHL talent evaluator. “There’s some development that has to happen, but you wonder about his role on that team as he often played on the fourth line, unlike Thomas. He’s good, got good upside, though…he just needs to physically mature.”

Red Line Report’s description of Formenton wasn’t that dissimilar. The publication ranked him a little less favorably, but they described him as a “speedy agitator who plays with grit and great pace.”

Their scouting report on Formenton read as follows:

Extremely young and thin and gives up weight to the big boys, but he’s a world class skater with elite speed and a non-stop motor. He’s relentless on the forecheck and has a nose for the net. Gets in very quickly on defenders and his persistence causes loads of turnovers which he turns into chances – unfortunately he’s poor around the net and doesn’t finish the cchances he creates. Has added a level of toughness and grit to his game, and gets under opponents’ skin. He’s constantly hungry for the puck and has worked hard on making better plays. If he’s ever able to get his hands and brain to catch up with his feet, has the tools to be a fine two-way winger. He’s already a real pain in the ass to play against. We love his attitude and work ethic, and the production is starting to come. But he is thin as a rail and has no upper-body strength. Needs to bulk up intelligently without losing his speed.”

With their first two picks in the 2017 NHL Draft, the Senators obviously played things safely by selecting Shane Bowers and Alex Formenton. Barring any trades, the Senators only possess four picks in this year’s draft, so maybe they felt obligated to play it safe and bring players into the fold who they confidently believed would play games at the NHL level.

It’s an interesting strategy considering the lack of high-end offensive talent within the system, but having high-energy skaters who play a strong two-way game adds important depth to the system as well. Their presence should afford the organization the flexibility to walk away from bottom-six players who price themselves off this team and replace them internally with cheaper alternatives.

This depth doesn’t come without a cost however, finding bottom-six players isn’t that difficult and thanks to the NHL’s salary cap system, good and effective bottom-six players are available late each and every summer for relatively inexpensive prices.

In Ottawa’s case, both of their early round picks project to be low-ceiling/high-floor types who look like they should be players at the NHL level and there’s value in that – and in Formenton’s case, maybe his offensive game can spike with higher quality linemates and minutes – but if one or both of these players struggle to demonstrate that they’ll produce as pros, we may be cursing the organization for playing it conservatively and not rolling the dice on more offensively-inclined alternatives.

tBBC Senators Draft Shane Bowers 28th Overall

Senators Draft Shane Bowers 28th Overall

bowers_web.jpg

In the days leading up to the 2017 NHL Draft, Pierre Dorion emphasized how the organization would do their due diligence and explore every possibility. Although he discussed the possibility of trading up and trading down, the Senators elected to stand pat and draft Shane Bowers from the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL.

In 60 USHL games last season, the 6’1″ and 179 lbs centre tallied 22 goals and 51 points.

Bowers has committed to Boston University for the 2017-18 season.

The selection immediately raised a few eyebrows last night as Sportnet’s Sam Cosentino described Bowers as a high character player who’s also a safe pick.

The Senators organization prides itself on adding character players, but if there’s any room for concern, it’s that some scouts question how much skill Bowers has.

Unfortunately for Bowers, the Senators just traded away Curtis Lazar — a former prospect who shared these same qualities — so inevitably, there’s going to be negativity surrounding the pick simply because recency bias may spur some unfair Lazar comps without anyone having really seen the player before. It doesn’t help that the Senators’ system isn’t exactly brimming with dynamic offensive talent either.

Bowers is his own prospect however and we shouldn’t hold the past failings of others against him, but admittedly, whenever you hear or read about things about a first round pick whose skill is called into question, it leaves something to be desired.

Then again, not everyone is reportedly sold on the idea that Bowers isn’t skilled.

In Corey Pronman’s work leading up to the draft, he had Bowers as his 42nd highest-rated player, but in his last mock before the actual Draft, he had Bowers going 29th overall.

In his pick-by-pick analysis of last night’s action, Pronman offered these notes (note: ):

Scouting notes: Bowers has been a name to know for several years when he was coming up as a bantam in Halifax, and he had a very solid second USHL season. Bowers is a great skater, with an easy first few steps. He works hard to pressure defensemen, and can play on both sides of the ice. The ultimate question with Bowers is his offensive ceiling. Some scouts I talk to swear by him as a potential frontline NHL player; other scouts, including myself, question whether he’ll be able to score much as an NHLer. That’s not to say Bowers can’t make high-level offensive plays. He has good hands and vision, and was more consistent in that regard in the second half of the season. Bowers is committed to Boston University starting in the 2017-18 season.

Team fit: Bowers is a former highly touted player who dipped a little in his draft season. He brings great speed and two-way play, but there are questions about how dynamic his skill is. He complements Logan Brown in the Senators’ system as a very different type of center, who is still very effective.

The idea of adding a “frontline” NHL player with the 28th overall selection is certainly intriguing, but it sounds like he’s a safe floor player who has a chance at becoming more.

Grant McCagg’s Recrutes.ca guide ranks Bowers their 37th-ranked player. Recrutes also ranked Bowers as one of the best defensive and most competitive forwards in the draft class.

He’s not a high-end talent but he’s a hard working, smart two-way guy. He’s got some size, goes to the net, pretty smart. Good energy. He could be a good third-line center because he’s an honest player. I like him.”

Another midwest US-based scout described him as a high-floor, low-ceiling player. “I don’t ever see him being a top two-line powerplayguy, I don’t see him scoring lots in the NHL. He has average puck skills in the scoring areas, but I also think he’s going to play.”

In Red Line Report‘s description of their 41st ranked skater, they wrote, “Above average in many facets, but doesn’t excite us.”

Here is Red Line Report‘s full write-up:

A mature kid who plays a refined game with NHL habits. Understands where he needs to be in both the offensive and defensive zones, reads the play well and has fine vision and instincts. Skating is just average though, and he has trouble separating from and beating aggressive man-to-man defenders who deny him time and space to make plays. Does not cut and change direction sharply, and lacks a separation gear. He’s a good playmaker and deft passer who can drift through layers in defences and spot small openings. Good in the faceoff circle. Doesn’t always elevate his play when the pace picks up. Has the look of a solid third line, two-way NHL centre one day, but we just don’t see any one exceptional carrying tool that leads us to believe he’ll be a difference-maker.”

Already we can see a discrepancy between analysts like Pronman and a guide like Red Line Report. One sees an exceptional skater and the other labels him as an average skater.

Hopefully the Red Line Report is wrong in their belief that he won’t develop into a difference-maker.

We check in with four-star running back Jaelen Gill as he prepares for his senior season.

While four-star running back Jaelen Gill didn’t originally intend on committing to Ohio State, it was the Westerville native’s longtime love of his hometown Buckeyes that proved to be the ultimate deciding factor.

Gill received nearly 30 scholarship offers, choosing OSU over the likes of Michigan, Notre Dame, and USC.

Despite sustaining a fractured fibula last September near the beginning of his junior season, the 6-foot-1, 187-pound back is finally healthy. Taking a break from preparing for what he plans on being a special senior year, Gill spoke with us about his recruitment, why he chose OSU, and if Kevin Durant is really better than LeBron James.

(Note: Remarks lightly edited for clarity.)

Land-Grant Holy Land: You were recruited early and made your decision relatively late. What was the whole recruiting experience like for you?

Jaelen Gill: It started off really early. Ever since I got my first offer, it was just heavy. Around this time for a lot of people, there's nothing really happening, but I feel like it was just 24/7 with me. It's something you dream of growing up, just to have opportunities to go places and go where you want. I'm just blessed that I was able to do that.

LGHL: You had close to 30 scholarship offers and have said the Buckeyes weren’t in your original plans until last December. What changed your mind?

Gill: I grew up a Buckeye fan, so I was always going to have some sort of bias towards that school. Coach Meyer and Coach Alford started recruiting me real hard. I was talking to them every single day and I was seeing them a lot more. It's a great school, not only for sports, but academically. OSU is about 20 minutes away from my family and friends, so I just feel like I'd be missing out on a lot if I didn't stay home and play for the team I grew up watching.

LGHL: So what has you most exited to play for the team you grew up rooting for?

Gill: To be coached up and taught by some of the smartest people in the world. Coach Meyer is the best coach in college football, the people around him are great and I'm excited for them to help build me into a man.

LGHL: There’s been a fair amount of speculation as to what position you’ll actually play at OSU. Is it safe to say H-back?

Gill: I think I'll be an H-back. That'll probably be the best way for me to utilize all of my abilities. I'm versatile and that's the position for the kind of guys that can do it all, but I’ll still be getting carries out of the backfield. Who knows, maybe I'll split out wide, but I'm definitely an H-back.

LGHL: You fractured your fibula last September near the start of your junior season. Almost a year later, how are you feeling?

Gill: I feel great, I feel about 99.9% healthy. There are times when I'll cut a certain way and I'll feel it a little bit, but that'll just come with time. Running wise, I'm back to full speed and I think I'm actually faster now. Overall, I feel back to normal and I'm just blessed to be active again.

LGHL: You play baseball and run track on top of playing football. Is football going to be the only sport you play at OSU?

Gill: Coach Meyer and I have talked about playing baseball. I told him I might want to start that sophomore year so I can get a year of school and football under my belt. That's the plan so far and he's open to it. We’ll just see how my schedule is and that'll determine if I play or not.

LGHL: You were named the most valuable running back at Rivals' Five-Star Challenge. You were also invited back to Nike Football's The Opening Finals for the second-consecutive year. What does that say about you as a player?

Gill: It definitely shows that my hard work is paying off. My injury was just a minor setback for a major comeback. Hopefully, the people are seeing that I'm the same player and that I might even be better. There’s not too many players that are good year after year and get invited to these camps in consecutive years.

LGHL: The Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the NBA Finals for the second time in three years. Ohioans obviously aren’t too pleased about it. What did you think of the Finals?

Gill: First off, I'm a Houston Rockets fan, but I’m a huge LeBron James fan, too, so I was disappointed. The Cavs should've won Game 3 and when they lost, I was heated. I can't stand all the fake Warriors fans.

LGHL: Kevin Durant was named the Most Valuable Player of the Finals. Some now believe he’s passed LeBron as the best basketball player in the world. Who’s the best in your mind?

Gill: Obviously, Kevin Durant is a great player, but he’s second behind LeBron. He averaged a triple-double the whole finals and would've up until Game 7 if the series continued. All he does is be great on and off the court. Durant's time will definitely come, though, it's just not now.

The Buckeyes hosted Johnson during a 1-day camp last week.

“Everything went well,” Johnson said. “I got a lot of feedback from the coaches on what I need to work on, such as footwork, hand movements, etc. It was a great camp altogether.”

Johnson enjoyed working with Larry Johnson.

“It was a great experience,” he said. “He taught me the ins and outs of becoming a great defensive lineman. The key is to have effort in everything.”

Johnson is hoping to see a few other big-time schools. He recently visited Alabama and will be at Notre Dame on Saturday. He says he’ll return to Ohio State in July for Friday Night Lights.

Even though he’s originally from Texas, the country’s 13th-ranked 2019 DT says a Buckeyes offer would be a game-changer.

There are still scholarship spots for the Buckeyes, but Holtmann may close the door.

"It's tempting to reach," Holtmann said Friday. "But I've been counseled by enough guys who've done this, who've reached and regretted it."

Bill Landis’ story on Chris Holtmann, and how reaching to fill roster spots may cause more harm than good. (cleveland.com)

Ohio State basketball has just 10 scholarship spots filled going into this season. While getting a more experienced basketballer, one that might be on the move from junior college or elsewhere, is an option, it doesn’t seem like a viable one for Holtmann.

In an article written by Bill Landis of cleveland.com, Holtmann knows the temptation to reach for a player that could help make the team better, but there is also a risk involved with doing that. Holtmann said he wanted “Ohio State guys” on the team, and by making a reach for another player, that ideology could be breached – with the potential for disfunction.

Currently on the team are two point guards with approximately one year of combined Division 1 experience, according to Landis. This seems like a problem, but Holtmann mentioned that Jae’Sean Tate might see some time at the PG position. The PG dilemma occurred when JaQuan Lyle reportedly quit the team back in April. In the Landis article, Holtmann mentioned that he hasn’t talked to Lyle – so it seems like Lyle’s career at OSU is over.

The fanbase around Ohio State basketball is eager to see the team rise to prominence once again. With Holtmann now in charge, he’s beginning to take the steps necessary to get the Buckeyes back to being competitive. Time will tell, but this season is shaping up to be a work in progress.

“Ohio State has also exponentially ramped up its creative department. This allows the program not only to produce a bulk of content — they do 500 graphics or videos a week — but to put out the right graphics.”

Zach Barnett on how Ohio State has become one of the elite recruiting programs, (Footballscoop.com)

Since taking over as head coach of the football program, Urban Meyer has brought the Buckeyes to the top of the recruiting rankings. The 2017 group finished with the No. 2 rating in the country; the 2018 class is currently sitting on top of the mountain at No. 1.

How does a program get to that level of recruiting? Zach Barnett of footballscoop.com wrote up a piece on just that, and looked into Ari Wasserman’s Cleveland Plain-Dealer profile of the recruiting department at OSU. The answer to why the Buckeyes are elite recruiters is simply one word: investment.

Investment of resources and time is how Ohio State was able to climb up the recruiting mountain – and now they stand as a Goliath. Mark Pantoni is the point-man in the recruiting department, and takes the time to review the recruit’s film and any information that’s available. Additionally, the social media graphics that get generated are personalized, and connect with the recruits.

Between Pantoni and the whole recruiting department, it’s no wonder that OSU has become the cream of the crop when it comes to recruiting.

2018 NBA Mock Draft

NBADraft.net

The 2017 NBA Draft has come and gone, and there wasn’t a basketball Buckeye drafted. One way-early NBA Draft preview for 2018 came out, and there is some belief that a Buckeye will hear their named called.

NBADraft.net were the ones to make their 2018 mock draft, and they have Keita Bates-Diop going at the No. 60 spot to Golden State. Eight freshman are projected to go in the first 10 picks of the draft, with Michael Porter, a Missouri Tiger, going as the overall No. 1 pick.

Granted, this is the way-to-early deep dive into next season, but if Bates-Diop is poking around the draft projections, that should make Buckeye fans feel good about this year.
