Ohio State’s explosive plays eventually wore down Michigan’s elite defense

The Wolverines have maybe the best defense in the country. But who would’ve expected their offense to have that much success?

This edition of The Game was a nail-biter up until Jordan Fuller caught John O’Korn’s pop-fly — that’s evident in the two teams’ success rates: 43.3% for Ohio State, and 41.3% for Michigan. Both teams were also 50% on third down success rate, scored touchdowns on all of their red zone attempts, averaged roughly 5 points per scoring opportunity, and averaged similar havoc rates allowed:

In the table above, scoring opportunity efficiency looks at the average points scored per scoring opportunity -- drives with a first down past the opponents' 40-yard line. Drive efficiency looks at the percentage of drives that were scoring opportunities. Rushing opportunity rate is the % of runs that gained five or more yards. Rushing stuff rate is the % of runs that were for no gain or a loss. Explosive plays are those that gain 15 or more yards.

Here are the takeaways that I said would be most important in the game preview. Don’t underestimate the Wolverines:

  1. Michigan’s defense rarely allows efficient plays, but when they do, they tend to be pretty explosive.
  2. Michigan’s pass defense is elite, and their run defense is ranked seventh overall. But there are indications that Ohio State may be able to find some running room against Michigan, as long as they avoid enough negative plays.
  3. The Wolverines’ greatest defensive strength may be how much havoc they cause.
  4. John O’Korn has performed worse than either Brandon Peters or Wilton Speight this year, but the Wolverines have gotten a lot of their passing production from their two tight ends, who could be a poor matchup for the Ohio State defense.
  5. Michigan’s run game is explosive, despite being fairly inefficient.
Offense: Finally got rolling in the second half

Following the run game’s success against Michigan State and Iowa, we were maybe a little too optimistic about the offense relative to what the season-long stats projected for The Game. Michigan’s defense was just too good. After all, S&P+ projected a 32-21 win for Ohio State.

And for a lot of the game, the two teams followed the script set by the advanced stats. J.T. Barrett had completed just 3/8 passes for 30 yards, 25 of which came on one play. The run game was hampered by the lack of a passing threat. And Don Brown’s aggressive defense kept putting the offense behind the chains due to some incredible defensive play calling. And as a result of three three-and-outs to start the game, Barrett, the offensive line, and Ohio State’s offensive play callers couldn’t get into any kind of rhythm or carry out a coherent strategy in the face of the Wolverines’ front seven. (I’m very ready for Don Brown and Rashan Gary to head to the NFL.)

So, Ohio State’s first successful pass was the 25-yard touchdown to Marcus Baugh with about 6 minutes left in the second quarter. Haskins found a lot more success, throwing successful passes on 5 of his 7 attempts. From the first watch, it seemed like Haskins’ relative success was due in part to Haskins’ unique throwing ability (the throw to Austin Mack, who has proved he’s the go-to guy for tough catches), the play calling (we finally saw successful mesh plays that allowed K.J. Hill to out-run mismatched defenders), and Michigan’s defense getting tired (and injured) as the game went on.

Overall, Ohio State had just six successful passes on the day — four of six of those were for 24 yards or more. It was all or nothing against the Michigan defense (26.7% explosive passing rate), just like the stats suggested: Michigan’s defense is top overall in defensive passing success rate, and 93rd in passing IsoPPP.

The run game was about as expected given the opponent’s defense (7th in defensive rushing success rate allowed, 32.9% on the year, and 116th in IsoPPP) and the lack of a consistent passing threat for most of the game. 44.4% is fine overall given the opponent, but the 24.4% stuff rate was just abysmal.

Oh, and on Barrett’s high number of carries — he had a 67% rushing success rate, so it’s no surprise they kept giving him reads.

Overall, drives either went nowhere — with five three-and-outs on 12 drives — or they had an explosive play that allowed for a scoring opportunity. On the 5 three-and-out drives, 4 of the 5 drives had at least one major tackle for loss. The offense wasn’t efficient enough overall (43.3%) to consistently move the ball without a big play.

The Buckeyes’ offense also got more successful as the game went on — the last four drives all created scoring opportunities, where just 2 of the previous 8 did before.

Defense: Tight ends and pro-style running backs

Who would’ve expected Michigan’s running backs to have a higher success rate (48.4%) than Ohio State’s (44.4%)?

They were half as explosive as Ohio State’s, but they moved the chains more consistently, too. Where the Buckeyes had five three-and-outs, Michigan only had two on their 13 drives despite similar overall success rates. Ohio State’s defense — and linebackers in particular — clearly has issues against some of these power-run teams that have effective pulling linemen. Michigan averaged 2.8 yards per carry overall, but Higdon and Evans averaged 5.5 yards per carry together. That was due in no small part to poor tackling by the Ohio State defense.

Michigan was one of the worst teams in the country in allowing negative plays — 47th in stuff rate and 118th in adjusted sack rate — and while Ohio State racked up 9 havoc plays (14.3%), this again was lower than Michigan’s, and two of the five sacks came on Michigan’s failed final drive in a must-pass situation.

Michigan’s points per scoring opportunity was similar to Ohio State’s — 5 to 5.17 — but the difference was that Michigan created fewer scoring opportunities overall compared to Ohio State — 30.8% compared to Ohio State’s 50%. And one of Michigan’s scoring opportunities was due to the punt return with fantastically bad tackling.

Overall, you got the sense that Michigan could’ve scored almost as well as Iowa if John O’Korn had been more accurate, because he often had open receivers, and especially tight ends and running backs. That’s a serious concern moving forward for next week against Wisconsin.

Ohio State might be without a defensive coordinator once again very soon

Numerous sources and reports have confirmed a rumor that started early Sunday morning: Greg Schiano will be the next head coach at Tennessee. The Volenteers’ interest in Schiano was originally reported by Dan Wolken of USA Today.

After weeks of #GRUMORS, this news seemingly came out of nowhere. Schiano was hardly talked about in connection to the vacancy in Knoxville until Sunday, but shortly after the original report, things apparently intensified to the point that Wolken reported that contract details were being finalized.

Tennessee is finalizing the deal with Schiano. Hopes to name him later today, per person with direct knowledge.

— Dan Wolken (@DanWolken) November 26, 2017

Schiano has spent the past two seasons in Columbus, coaching Ohio State’s defensive backs and coordinating the defense, alongside Luke Fickell in 2016, and Bill Davis in 2017. The 51-year-old defensive expert came to Columbus after three years away from the sport, following a disappointing tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Schiano has only had one run as a head coach in college football before now, as he held the position at Rutgers for ten years, turning the Scarlet Knights into a consistent top-half performer in the Big East. Schiano went 68-67 during his time in Piscataway.

Under his tutelage, Ohio State’s defense has been among the nation’s elite each of the last two season’s, finishing fifth in defensive S&P+ in 2016, and 12th in 2017. He’s also helped produce three first-round draft picks in the defensive backfield (Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, Gareon Conley), and will almost certainly have at least one more this season with Denzel Ward.

If this deal does in fact become official, it is unclear if Schiano will coach Ohio State’s defense in the Big Ten Championship or in an eventual bowl game or playoff run. LandGrant Holy Land will have more coverage on Schiano and on Ohio State’s potential defensive coordinator search as it becomes available.

It’s a clean sweep for Ohio State on Saturday in Ann Arbor, though this wasn’t as close as the football game.

If a school’s fans were to not give a damn about an entire state, say Michigan, going into Ann Arbor and winning both the football and hockey games would be a good way to show it.

And that’s exactly what Ohio State’s mens hockey team pulled on Saturday night, dominating the Wolverines to the tune of a 5-1 victory, following the football team’s 31-20 victory in The Game earlier in the afternoon. The football team fell down early and rallied back; the hockey team never trailed and showed clearly who was the superior squad.

Ohio State and Michigan were even in shot attempts and shots on goal, 62 and 35 apiece respectively, on the night and yet Ohio State never trailed. Michigan trailed from 8:38 into the second period on and could do no better than tying OSU in shots and attempts. That speaks well to either OSU’s superiority, UM’s mediocrity, or some combination of the two.

After Friday night’s third period shellacking, with Ohio State outshooting the Wolverines 18-8 in the third of the 3-2 victory, it wasn’t a fluke either. Despite the score effects and trailing for more than half the game, Michigan could do no better than even against a team in Ohio State known for receding into a shell once they get a lead.

The first half of this game wasn’t the laugher it ended up being, however. Christian Lampasso scored to give Ohio State the 1-0 lead 5:52 into the first, with Brendon Kearney and Matt Joyaux recording the assists. Michigan tied it at the 7:49 mark of the second, though, on Joseph Cecconi’s third of the year. But from thereon, it was all Buckeyes.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) November 26, 2017

Tanner Laczynski scored his fifth of the year, and what would turn out to be the game winning goal, at 8:38 of the second, with an assist from Matthew Weis. Weis slithered a pass from behind the net through a multitude of UM defenders and even a Buckeye to find Laczynski in front to give OSU the lead back, just 49 seconds after Michigan had tied it up. OSU would lead the rest of the way.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) November 26, 2017

Mason Jobst made it 3-1 in favor of the Buckeyes at 18:17 of the second, with his seventh of the year. Weis hit him on a cross ice pass with the man advantage and he fired it in from the faceoff dot to put OSU up two. Laczynski recorded the secondary helper.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) November 26, 2017

Ohio State dominated the first two periods, putting up a 12-7 shot advantage in the first and upping it to 16-7 in the second alone. That’s 28-14 over two periods against the No. 17 team in the country, on the road. That’d be great against Rensselaer, much less Michigan.

In the third, it’d be more of the same. Weis finally got one of his own at 10:28, with Laczynski paying him back for that first goal with the lone assist. He won the faceoff and somehow got the puck right back from Laczynski and fired it home from the right faceoff dot, just like Jobst showed him could be done earlier.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) November 26, 2017

Lampasso of all people doubled his goal total for the entire season with his second of the night later in the third, as he put one home on the powerplay with just .8 seconds left in the game. The Ohio State hockey twitter was apparently closed up for the night already and didn’t make a gif for this one, so I thought I’d put this one here instead.

Haskins put that ball on the money and Mack somehow hung on despite that hit pic.twitter.com/A6tt2JP1Mf

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) November 25, 2017

I love me some Dwayne Haskins. That was a neat comeback he led.

Anyway, Sean Romeo somehow found a way to up his save percentage again, stopping 34/35 shots for a .971 on the night. Ridiculous. If he was as good as Christian Frey and Matt Tomkins were last year, the Bucks would’ve taken it. Instead, he’s been amazing and can keep the Buckeyes in any game playing like this.

The Buckeyes will look to keep the good times rolling next weekend when they host unranked Penn State. With the way OSU’s increased their volume shooting and the way Penn State will throw a puck on net from Nevada, it should be fun.

Emotions will be high this afternoon, as Chris Holtmann will lead Ohio State against his former school, Butler, in the PK80 Invitational

Ohio State will wrap up their participation in the inaugural PK80 Invitational, squaring off against Butler in the Motion Bracket’s Fifth Place Game. Even though this isn’t the championship game of the bracket, there will be plenty of emotions in the air, as Chris Holtmann will be coaching against the team he used to lead before coming to Ohio State.

Prior to taking the head coaching position at Ohio State in early June, Holtmann coached for three seasons at Butler, amassing a 70-31 record during this time with the school. Last season was Holtmann’s best year of the three he was in charge in Indianapolis, as he led the Bulldogs to a 25-9 record and a Sweet Sixteen appearance.

After suffering their first loss of the season on Thursday night to Gonzaga, Ohio State rebounded with a 79-71 win over Stanford on Friday night in Portland. The Buckeyes looked like they might be in trouble early, falling behind the Cardinal 31-21 in the first half. Ohio State closed the first half with a 11-1 run, heading into halftime tied with Stanford at 32.

Ohio State wouldn’t trail again in the game, building up a double-digit lead in the second half, and not letting the Cardinal get closer than five points late in the game. The win after trailing by double-digits was the first the Buckeyes have recorded since February of earlier this year, when Ohio State trailed Michigan by double-digits in the first half before coming back to record a 70-66 win over the Wolverines.

The Buckeyes were paced by a career-high 23 points from C.J. Jackson. The junior guard hit a season-high four three-pointers, and now has reached double figures in each of his last three games. Along with Jackson, Ohio State got a couple big performances out of their elder statesmen. Keita Bates-Diop scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Jae’Sean Tate added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Like Ohio State, Butler was able to bounce back from a Thursday night loss in Portland. The Bulldogs saw little go right on Thursday in a 61-48 loss to Texas in their first round game. Butler held off a game Portland State team on Friday night, beating the Vikings 71-69. After being held scoreless by the Longhorns on Thursday, Tyler Wideman responded with a team-high 18 points against Portland State.

Following the departure of Holtmann, the reins of the Butler program were handed to former player LaVall Jordan. During his senior season at Butler, Jordan averaged 12.4 points per game on a team that won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in 39 years, under then-head coach Thad Matta. Last year was Jordan’s first year as a head coach, posting just a 11-24 record at Milwaukee. The Panthers did make the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship Game, and had they beaten Northern Kentucky, they would have made the NCAA Tournament with the most losses ever.

Numbers to know

42

Today’s meeting is the 42nd meeting all-time between Ohio State and Butler, with The Buckeyes holding a 31-10 edge in the series. The teams played four times in a five-year span between 2005 and 2009. The Buckeyes won the meetings in 2005 and 2008, while Butler took the meetings in 2007 and 2009. The final meeting was the first time both teams entered ranked, with Butler earning a 74-66 win.

10

Ohio State is unbeatable when they can get at least 10 points and 10 rebounds from forward Keita Bates-Diop in a game. In Friday’s game, Bates-Diop scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, pushing Ohio State’s record to 10-0 when Bates-Diop records a double-double. Bates-Diop has now recorded a double-double in four of Ohio State’s six games this year.

1,181

With his 14 points on Friday night, senior Jae’Sean Tate surpassed the 1,179 career points Lawrence Funderburk scored during his Buckeye career for 37th on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list. That wasn’t the only milestone Tate eclipsed on Friday night, as he recorded his 600th rebound for Ohio State.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Kaleb Wesson

While Micah Potter was able to play on Friday night, Ohio State didn’t push the sophomore, letting Wesson start his second game in a row. The reigning Ohio Mr. Basketball scored 10 points for the second game in a row. When Potter is fully recovered from his ankle injury, Ohio State will have a solid tandem in Wesson and Potter in the post.

C.J. Jackson

The main bright spot in Ohio State’s trip to Portland has been C.J. Jackson. The junior put home a career-high 23 points in the win over Stanford, and in Thursday’s loss to Gonzaga he tied Jae’Sean Tate with a team-high 12 points. After shooting a combined 1-12 from long range in wins over Texas Southern and Northeastern, Jackson has found his stroke, hitting six of his 11 three-point attempts in Portland.

Butler

Kelan Martin

The senior forward from Louisville is Butler’s leading scorer this year, averaging 14.7 points per game. Martin scored 16 points in Friday’s win over Portland State, and the total was only eclipsed by 20-point performances in the first two games of the season against Kennesaw State and Princeton. In the victory against Princeton, Martin also added 14 rebounds.

Kamar Baldwin

After Sunday’s game, Ohio State fans will probably be happy they won’t have to see Baldwin anytime soon. The sophomore guard has been solid most of the year, hitting double-figures in scoring in four of Butler’s six games on the year. Baldwin’s worst performance of the year came on Friday, as he scored just six points in the win over Portland State. Expect Baldwin to bounce back in today’s game against the Buckeyes.

That backup Buckeye QB didn't look half-bad, either.

Admit it: you were starting to give up.

Early on, it was hard not to feel like Ohio State was going to subject its fans to an Iowa-esque performance in the Big House. The Buckeyes managed to move backwards in the first quarter, finishing the first 15 minutes with fewer yards than they had when they started.

Paired with that offensive impotence, was a nightmarish defensive showing for Ohio State. They couldn't seem to make a tackle, especially when Chris Evans had the ball in his hands, and they were making John O'Korn look awfully competent under center.

Somehow, they managed to settle in and score a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to answer Michigan's, and took it to halftime at 14-14. Injuries to key contributors on both teams, most notably QB J.T. Barrett, added to the high drama of the third quarter. But despite all that, the talented team from Columbus started to nose ahead on the scoreboard, taking a 21-20 lead under the command of backup QB Dwayne Haskins and a monstrous performance from the defensive line.

After that, it was all Buckeye. Ohio State dominated the fourth quarter and walked away with its 13th victory in The Game in its last 14 tries. Let's take a look at who made that happen.

Blue chip stocks

Denzel Ward, DB: Give Denzel Ward credit. On a day when the Ohio State linebackers and defensive backs didn't seem to be able to buy a tackle, Ward showed that he came to play. He tracked down and broke up a pair of John O'Korn passes and got in on eight total tackles, but he did seven of those all by himself.

But perhaps the finest moment of Ward's day was on special teams. After Michigan retook the lead, No. 12 came off the edge and got a hand on Quin Nordin's extra point attempt, giving the Buckeyes a much-needed boost. By taking away a gimme point, Ward helped force the Wolverines into need-a-TD territory once Ohio State got up 24-20. It was a huge moment that won't get enough burn on the highlights.

Sam Hubbard, DE: There's a chance John O'Korn is going to start seeing Sam Hubbard in his nightmares. The junior defensive end found his way into the Michigan QB's grill over and over on Saturday, finishing his third go-round in The Game with 2.5 sacks and five total tackles. Hubbard's biggest play of the day—immortalized in the photo above—was a strip-sack of O'Korn that torpedoed Michigan's chances to retake the lead down 21-20 and driving. They wouldn't score again.

J.K. Dobbins, RB: Hey, there he is! The freshman phenom RB reappeared in the Buckeye game plan in a big way on Saturday, rushing for 101 yards on 15 carries and finding the end zone late in the third quarter to give the Buckeyes the lead for good. Once Dobbins got going—and it was frustratingly late that he started getting the ball with any kind of consistency—he proved to be too much for a Wolverine defense that had their way with the Buckeyes in the first half.

Solid investments

Dwayne Haskins, QB: There's no bigger stage to enter as a Buckeye quarterback than the Michigan game. Dwayne Haskins rose to the occasion. After J.T. Barrett went down with an aggravation of his season-long meniscus injury in the third quarter, Haskins came in facing a six-point deficit and a hungry Michigan defensive line. As a passer, he was almost perfect, going 6-of-7 for 94 yards and adding a dimension to the Ohio State offense that had been missing all game.

Those crisp passes, a handful of which came on crossing routes to pick up big first downs, also opened up lanes for the running game. Dobbins and Mike Weber found their spots after that, and Haskins added a crucial scamper of his own, taking the ball 21 yards and ending up just shy of the Wolverine end zone. Haskins didn't always make the right reads in the read-option attack, and he's not the runner that Barrett is, but the Ohio State offense looks to be in good hands for the future.

Junk bonds

(Guy-you-avoid-at-the-bar voice) Michigan! Ayyyyyyyyyyy. No, seriously, it's a shame that a defense as good as the Wolverines' is being wasted to the degree that it is. Pair that unit with an offense that can sustain drives and complete mid-range passes and the Buckeyes might've lost this game by 20. Instead, it looked like Michigan used up everything it had on offense in the game's first 22 minutes or so—the Ohio State tacklers started tackling, and John O'Korn crashed back down to earth after an admittedly excellent first quarter.

The Wolverines will finish the regular season 8-4, good for 4th in the Big Ten East and 6th in the conference overall. Jim Harbaugh isn't on the hot seat and shouldn't be, but will that stop us from reveling in the Schadenfreude? No, no it will not. We'll see you on the message boards!

Buy/Sell

BUY: J.T. Barrett as Ohio State's best option. It's silly that we have to talk about this, but calls for a QB change happened earlier in the season and are sure to happen again now that Dwayne Haskins looked so good in relief of J.T. Barrett. Haskins undoubtedly has the potential to open up some excellent passing plays for the Buckeyes. But the offense that Ohio State runs—the one that got them to 10-2 in the first place—is predicated upon consistently making the right reads in the read-option. Barrett, for all his foibles, is still the right guy to run that offense.

SELL: Ohio State's playoff chances. That's not to say that the Buckeyes can't make the playoff; they're certainly still in the hunt, though Auburn's win over Alabama on Saturday complicated the picture a good deal. What we're talking about here are Ohio State's chances even if they get in. This is a team that does a lot of things well and is, at times, a joy to watch. But there are so many things big and small that the Buckeyes have not managed to overcome or work out among themselves this season, be it play-calling or kickoff coverage or the linebacking unit.

This is a very, very good team. But I'm not sold on them being a playoff-caliber team. And that's okay!
