Former Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith Reportedly Serving As a Consultant for Maryland for Six Months​

Former Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith will be lending his assistance to Maryland athletics — temporarily.

According to a report by the Columbus Dispatch, Smith is serving as a consultant for Maryland for the next six months.

“You have to have something to keep you mentally active,” Smith told the Dispatch, “and the consulting and board work keeps me mentally active. Obviously, I'm not working 80-plus hours a week.”

Smith is assisting former Ohio State associate athletic director for marketing and communications Jim Smith, who just began his tenure as Maryland's athletic director last week. He worked in Columbus from 1995-2000. Jim Smith worked with Gene from 2016-2020 when he led Ohio State's alumni association.

After claiming a 2-0 lead seconds after tip-off, Carmen’s Crew trailed the remainder of the game, with Fail Harder leading by 19 points at halftime and 14 points when the Elam Ending began.

“HE IS IMPROVING EVERY DAY.” Earlier this month, I wrote that former Ohio State offensive tackle George Fitzpatrick received praise from Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman during Big 12 Media Days — praise that indicated he could be the Wildcats’ Game 1 starter this fall.

“We needed some older guys as these younger guys grew,” Klieman said, “and George Fitzpatrick is one that was here in the spring that elevated himself to the top of the depth chart at left tackle.”

Unfortunately, Fitzpatrick suffered a medical emergency during a summer practice on July 16. According to WIBW’s Jason Kinander, Riley County Emergency Medical Services responded to a call at Kansas State’s practice facility at 4:36 p.m. From there, EMTs transported Fitzpatrick to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan and, soon after, St. Francis in Topeka.


“George had a medical situation to which the training staff quickly responded,” the Kansas State football program told WIBW in a statement. “He is improving every day, and we appreciate all who have cared for and supported him as he continues to recover.”

One of the people who has cared for and supported Fitzpatrick is Ian Moore. The Ohio State offensive lineman posted on X over the weekend and asked his followers to keep Fitzpatrick in their thoughts and prayers.

“Please pray for a speedy recovery and no complications,” Moore posted.

Well other schools don’t have a multi million dollar HC in the area I’d imagine.

Any rate this seems silly at this point and I’d be interested to know if there’s more here that we aren’t being told.

In watching the WNBA, appears (at least to me), that when the announcers talk up the bigs, it's usually a southern school, or Ucon that's mentioned. Brink is an exception, but we've not really seen her play, as sidelined with a leg injury. Looking forward to seeing the new edition of tOSU womens' team this year, and see what the several bigs on our team. Elsa seemed to be advanced as a frosh, let's see the leap she'll make as a sophomore.

My grandfather had a small rundown farm in Gore, Ohio. I loved the grands, but they did seem to live rather primitively when compared to Columbus. One day, I was about 6 years old and walking toward him when I heard a rattler start its shaker. Grandpa held up both hands to say, stand still. He reached down into the weeds, grabbed the rattler by the tail, and snapped it like a bullwhip, the head coming off in this one movement. He then told us to not touch it if we found it and threw the body away. He went from country hick to Superman in one fell swoop!
