Game show host Wink Martindale — known for ‘Tic-Tac-Dough,’ ‘High Rollers’ and ‘Gambit’ — dead at 91​

Wink Martindale, the genial host of such hit game shows as "Gambit" and "Tic-Tac-Dough" who also did one of the first recorded television interviews with a young Elvis Presley, has died. He was 91.

Born Winston Conrad Martindale on Dec. 4, 1933, in Jackson, Tenn., Martindale was known not only for his friendly demeanor, deep voice, and colorful sports coats but also for his unusual first name.

Nico Iamaleava and his Tennessee teammates have been accused of throwing their College Football Playoff game against Ohio State, a 42-21 loss in Columbus, because they didn’t receive enough in NIL compensation.

CBS Sports’ Josh Pate dropped the bombshell on "Josh Pate's College Football Show.”

“This stuff was happening last December during the playoffs — with this kid included, but not just this kid. They were trying to get more money from Tennessee and other playoff teams before the playoffs. They were trying to leverage playoff participation,” Pate said.

“The explainer was, ‘Our client is being paid X amount of money to participate in 12 games, maybe a 13th if you make the conference championship game. But you guys made the playoff. He should make money money.’ This is the kind of BS that's happening behind the scenes right now.”

Pate’s sentiment is similar to what Jason Whitlock said about Colorado’s players heading into the Alamo Bowl against BYU.

CU players were reportedly given underwhelming gifts for their bowl participation, while some even opted out before the game due to the Buffs “running out of money.”

“They had to do everything on a strict budget. BYU players got amazing gift bags and had an amazing bowl experience. Colorado was on a very strict budget, and the players were frustrated by it,” Whitlock said.

If this is what college football’s postseason has become, more ratings slippage should be expected.

Less and less, the sport is resembling what scholastic athletics were supposed to be.

Totally agree. There is no such thing as a totally open market (for a long time).

Someone will take power and build a structure.

Idle thought on a Tuesday. What with Stud becoming HC at IMG, does anyone think he'll help tOSU recruit down there? Can see both sides to this coin, given the roasting he got here as the OL coach. Seem to recollect that Pepper Johnson coached there as well, but don't really know if his presence helped tOSU with the recruits at IMG. Expect someone with more info than I might know.

Hiking to bottom of GC (and back) was one of the hardest physical things ever done. Fortunately, a buddy (and couple of lady friends) met me on way up with a cold one. Don't care for the commercialization of the South Rim. Prefer the North. Long drive to get there, but 'roughed it' in the North Rim lodges. Do remember standing in the lodge, with floor to ceiling glass wall, watching a thunder storm approaching, until the rain crashed against the glass. Got a glass of brandy and sat by the fire watching the storm. Marvelous. Anyway, the trails on the North Rim have exquisite views, and not as cluttered with people (as South Rim), speaking in languages one does not understand. Had a contest with daughter to see who could identify the different languages. She won. One old salt told me to come back in the spring with the Canyon runs rim to rim. Had to think about that for a bit, but laughed with him. PS, have heard that anywhere in the world, if one yells "O-H", you're certain to hear "I-O" back. Great place to try.

So, tOSU loses 10-12 rebounds per game with Cotie portaling and TT running out of eligibility, and we add yet another shooter? Good thing she's almost 50%, as won't have the presence under the glass to get a rebound. And that's without Ajai, who also runs out of eligibility.

The test case would be if Duke had something like a 10-3 year in football and took and an embarrassing early exit from the Dance and got that chant.

And it will probably be some governing body that oversees the major sports. Football, M/W basketball, and a select few others will be overseen by different rules outside of the NCAA. I know they don't want to lose the cash cow, but fuck you for being greedy Boomers. Strip the bowl assholes and corporations from ruining the sports. Now get off my lawn.
