2025-2026 Ohio State Men's Basketball

The Fan giving the hot takes this morning, T-Bone claiming it would be better for OSU to NOT make the NCAA tournament and get rid of Diebler. What a trash take. First of all, you don't want to punish players who've given a lot to the program like Bruce Thornton who have their last chance at making the tournament this season. Second of all, Jake Diebler is not the main problem with the program, and getting rid of him won't solve the larger underlying issues with the hoops program at all. Thirdly, why root against the team that you're a fan of? Where's the fun in that?

The larger problem is the Administration not supporting the program adequately with NIL and forcing whomever coaches the team to be at a disadvantage in comparison to the upper echelon teams in the B1G year in and year out. You also have a program with a basketball facility and experience that fans don't really care to be a part of unless it's a big game, and that's true regardless of the coach. We should not root against Jake Diebler at all because there's no guarantee at all that OSU will upgrade, and he's a good man who deserves more chances to build the roster to compete with the upper echelon teams in the B1G on a more level playing field, instead of one where the odds are stacked against him as it's been the past couple of years.

Coach Diebler does need to make an adjustment in recruiting to target guys who are going to be better at addressing the defensive shortcomings in the program - most importantly defensive rebounding, but also getting guys who can do a little bit more in terms of defending without fouling, getting more steals and blocked shots which will help as well and it all adds up. If we could just up the ante some with NIL & be a little more defense-oriented in recruiting, then I think things will fall in line.
T-bone makes that show unlistenable. I never listen to it anymore. Unfortunately I do like listening to Tyvis but T-bones just too much with his whiny little fat man takes.

OSU vs. USC, 6:30 PM EST 2/11 BTN

Some interesting notes from Adam Jardy's pregame piece, OSU is 7-0 after a loss, and (after the opening 6-game win streak) 2-8 after a win. Just can't get win streaks going. Also, OSU is only 16th in the Big Ten in defensive rebound percentage.

California’s “jock taxes” force pro athletes who don’t live in the state to fork over percentages of their yearly income based on the number of days they work in California.

Sam Darnold received $178k for winning the Super Bowl.
He owes California $249k for just the Super Bowl (they factor is his per game salary based on his annual contract)

He also owes a whole bunch more because he played 49ers and Rams in CA as well
Which was $5.3M this year. And he got $32M for signing with the Seahawks. I simply can't muster any tears for him for some reason.

The check for winning the game helped him pay the tax. I don't see what the problem is.

Now that clip didn't directly reflect T-Bone's disdain for the Diebler hire, but he is firmly anti-Diebler. I also think his implication that missing the NCAA tournament this season would be a motivating factor for bringing some kind of fundamental shift in priorities at OSU which would benefit men's hoops is delusional. If the OSU administration changed literally nothing to help the hoops program after missing the NCAA tourney for the third straight season a year ago, what makes you think one more year of that is going to bring about some sort of epiphany amongst the University leadership and light a fire under their butts? Foolish.

Miami (OH) Redhawks (Basketball Official Thread)

Couple years back, ran into a guy who sported his Miami shirt. Had to talk to him, as I matriculated there oh so many years ago. Got to talking and he mentioned (proudly might say) that Miami U is the best hockey team in the state. Recruits go to Oxford-town rather than C'bus for the sport. Was an eye-opener for me. Saw games at Withrow Court, and then a couple at Millett (waaaay across town). Back then had 50 cent taxis, which took when my (illegal) car was in the shop.
Miami hasn't been remotely good or even mediocre for a decade. They've been the bottom feeder in their conference while Ohio State has made multiple tournaments and one Frozen Four. Miami's boasts about being a hockey school come from a ten year period where they were nationally relevant with a new arena and hot young coach. They were completely irrelevant before that and have reverted back to their historic norm after it. I will say that their new coach does have them at least competitive this year, but that's a long way from competing for NCHC titles and tournament bids.

Ohio State--far from a blueblood--has an overall better winning percentage over history. Miami did manage to catch us in the head-to-head series and run up a good lead when they were hot, and we stunk. Both schools have the same number of NCAA appearances and Frozen Fours. Bowling Green is the only Ohio school to actually win an NC.

ehhh....most of Taylor's seasons were very meh. He's carried by the high placement in the 5 years they were in the tournament (my system probably gives him more points than he should get honestly)....

Miller shouldn't have been fired when he was fired. That said, I started this in 1978-79, Miller had already been the coach for 2 years and neither one of those teams made the tournament. Edit to add: When the tournament expanded to 32 teams, Miller wasn't even the coach yet. He still didn't make the tournament until year 4.

The way I scored this was rewarding the placement of the game. A national final was worth 7 points, etc.

Matta remains the unicorn in Ohio State basketball history. It's not particularly close either.
Miller was like Randy Ayers but without the thug driven blaze of glory implosion. He started out with a team of future NBA players and won but not as much as he should have. After that, he never was able to recruit teams capable of challenging for Big Ten titles.

That’s pretty standard for states and cities and certainly not exclusive to California. If you work in a state, you pay taxes there. Columbus taxes any pro athlete, entertainer, and/or public speakers for even a single day worked in the city.

In what other states has an athlete has competed at the highest level, won the championship and ended up owing money?

2026 Winter Olympics (Milan - Cortina, Feb 6-20)

How does that work? I get that one lives in the country, born or naturalized, you can compete for that country in the olympics. But there are several (probably more than several Buckeye women hockey players) that are 'ringers' for a country? Would imagine some sort of NIL payola is involved....
Aside from Minnesota, we recruit Canada and Europe pretty heavily. The Canadians are Canadian. The Swedes are Swedish. I actually wouldn't be surprised if there are no Ohioans on the Buckeye team. There just is nowhere near the level of high school play in the state to fuel a national championship caliber program.
