Miami (FL) Hurricanes (1926-2003)

The only thing that kept that "revamped" defense from getting shredded last night was a very pedestrian ND offense.

"we're back"... :slappy:

ok
Florida, FSU and SMU are on paper the hardest teams on their schedule, but we all know this is Miami and Cristobal. They could just as easily lose to almost anyone on their schedule

S Caleb Downs, Captain (All B1G, All-American, National Champion)

After the re-watch, this is just an incredibly smart, instinctive football player. Getting guys lined up, making plays, literally total control of game situations.
Downs is professional in everything that he does. From the on-field corrections he was making for Devin Sanchez to the game-sealing tackle, he is both a coach and elite player at the same time.

RB James Peoples (National Champion)

I expected a bit more; I didn’t have lofty expectations but I thought maybe a couple 7-10 yarders with that burst.

I’d like to see an all-22 analysis to get a sense of how diverse the blocking schemes were in the ground game.

It didn't seem like he used the best vision in his runs. It also seemed like People's missed the hole on several occasions which drew Lock to putting Donaldson back in. I'm sure it could be nerves and getting used to the speed of the game playing against 1s, instead of in garbage time

LB Alex “Sonny” Styles, Block 'O' (National Champion)

I was excited when he was recruited and came to Ohio State due to the family connection and high school videos. He has become a real favorite to focus on in games.

That squat is over 300kgs. At my best, I did 288kgs on the lowly leg sled press machine. I just checked and 200 kgs is considered elite. 300 kgs must be off the charts, right?
For Styles to be that lean, that fast, and with that jumping ability on top of it, "freak athlete" is truly the best way to describe it. I mean, his squat numbers don't make sense given the above. And you don't get there without extreme work and discipline.

I remember reading a long-form piece on Saquon Barkley when he was at Penn State, the workouts he was doing, and the weight he was putting up. I do not like Penn State, but I would not cheer against Barkley after reading about his work ethic. It surprises me none the success he has had in college and now in the NFL.

And Styles has a bright future ahead of him with that similar kind of work ethic to go along with his size and speed. As long as he keeps progressing in his on the field play, the sky is the limit. He made big strides towards the end of last season.

DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

His knowledge of defense and experience dealing with complex offenses is why I withheld an opinion. I could see why there were grumblings but I also thought that maybe this could level some things up.

Turns out this defenses ability to just play mind games to confuse us next level. When you have that and you also have the most athletic defense in the country that’s a good recipe for success.

Will be interesting to see how we play these teams different. I bet it’ll take a QB that can run to really be an issue for our defense. So I look at Washington and TCUN specifically as teams that maybe could be skilled enough there to hurt us even if we are playing well.

No chance a defense is just going to line up and either drop back or run power. I can’t think of one team left though that has the skill at WR to force us to play balanced.
They just faced one . We can knock his arm, but Manning certainly has athleticism to rival the QBs at Washington and scUM. And I see the issue with both of those QBs being, Washington not having the skill position players of Texas, and will Underwood be able to read defenses at a level high enough to decipher Patricia?

Kirk Ferentz (four more B1G COY Awards than Tressel and Meyer combined)

And that 2002 B1G Championship was shared with the Buckeyes simply because they didn't play each other that year. IIRC the Bucks won something kinda big that year themselves.
And he won Big Ten coach of the year over Tressel that year as well.

RB James Peoples (National Champion)

I guess there’s a pretty obvious reason CJ Donaldson got double the snaps as Peoples.

I was a little surprised when Donaldson came out as the starter but it obviously makes sense now.

Texas has a nice defense so I’m not trying to overstate it, but there was definitely NOT that elite RB “feel” when we had Trey or Quinshon in backfield last year.
It’s early, and I recall lots of times when Trey didn’t look great being run up the middle in a predictable way. I’ll concede that I’ve been as big a Peoples fanboy as anyone and that he didn’t look good on Saturday in a vacuum or compared to Donaldson, who can move a pile more, but let’s see what they look like with some holes and less predictable play calling, acknowledging that next week won’t tell us much at all.
