Caleb Downs had the first punt return touchdown in ten years for Ohio State as the Buckeyes rolled to 10-1

The No.2 Ohio State Buckeyes moved to 10-1 after rolling over the No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers 38-15 to hand the Curt Cignetti-led Hoosiers their first loss, as they move to 10-1.

Here is who and what we are high and low on heading into the week everyone has been waiting for.

Blue Chip

Special teams touchdowns

There is something euphoric about watching a punt return touchdown. Buckeye fans have not seen one since 2014 when Jalin Marshall returned one, also against Indiana, almost to the day of this one.

Caleb Downs showed some of the best patience I have seen. He followed his blockers for the 79-yard punt return, really putting the Buckeyes out in front for good after they took the 21-7 lead.

Solid Investments

Cody Simon

At the half of this game, Cody Simon had seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. He finished with 10 tackles, four solos, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. Sonny Styles looks better and better each week, but so has Simon, and he has taken over as one of the top linebackers in the Big Ten.

Pass rush

After the first quarter of this game, it looked very similar to the Oregon game. There was no pass rush, letting the opposing quarterback seemingly do what he wanted. However, Jim Knowles took note and dialed up the pressure to the tune of five sacks, forcing Kurtis Rourke into 8-for-18 passing for just 68 yards. Cody Simon had 2.5 sacks leading the way, but it seemed like everyone got in on the action in this one.

Junk Bond

Slow starts

The Buckeyes are one of the best second-half teams in the country. However, the first quarters have left some to be desired, and although it hasn’t come back to bite them yet, a slow start against Oregon, Texas, or Georgia could make the second half a lot tougher than they have experienced to this point.

Buy/Sell

Buy: The coaching staff

Throughout the year, there have been many conversations about the coaching staff, and no one has been immune to them except for Brian Hartline.

However, Chip Kelly has the offense humming, Jim Knowles is dialing up the pressure each week, and Justin Fyre has handled all the offensive line issues with flying colors. Right now, this is a coaching staff that can win a championship, and that is something we have not been able to say in past years.

Buy: Carson Hinzman

Hinzman started all 12 regular-season games at center last year. Then, the Buckeyes added Seth McLaughlin, and Hinzman became the backup center.

He spent the bulk of the season as the backup center to McLaughlin until about a month ago, when he moved to left guard to start in place of Donovan Jackson and now is the starting center with the injury to McLaughlin. He has done what he has been asked and has contributed to the team in positive ways.

Sell: Penalties

Davison Igbinosun has 11 penalties in 11 games, and the Buckeyes are 134th out of 134 FBS teams in penalty yards. This is similar to the slow starts; even though it has not affected them to this point, that could be detrimental when the games get bigger and the margins get smaller.

Sell: Leaving points on the field

You could argue that the Buckeyes' offense has left some points on the field against Penn State, Oregon, and this one against Indiana. It hurt them against Oregon and not in the other two games, but that is the one concern I have about the offense moving forward into the postseason.

Differential Statistical Analysis for The Game 2024

If you don't mind I will use acronyms for previously defined terms from here on out.

The CUNTS scoring defense sits at 21.45, so they've got that going for them.
Their DSD is 78.5%. That's good, not great

My real prediction then?

Hang 100

If you don’t mind what is CUNTS an acronym for?

2027 OH WR Jamier Brown is a Buckeye!!!

Five-Star, No. 2 Overall Wide Receiver Jamier Brown Commits to Ohio State As First Commit in Class of 2027

Ohio State has its first commitment in the 2027 class.

Jamier Brown — a five-star wide receiver and native of Huber Heights, OH — has committed to the Buckeyes as the football team's first recruiting commitment in the 2027 cycle.

The 5-11, 160-pound prospect had also entertained offers from Maryland, Notre Dame, Penn State and Auburn. However, the in-state homegrown product could not pass up on an opportunity to play for the school he has supported since his childhood.

“It felt great, it was exciting,” Brown told Eleven Warriors when he received an offer in June. “It’s all I thought about since I woke up. Especially since I’ve been an Ohio State fan my whole life.”

Just sayin': Three of his highlights are kick off returns, not too bad for a Freshman:

Three Key Stats: Ohio State Holds Indiana to Just 151 Total Offensive Yards, Buckeye Defense Tallies Five Sacks and Will Howard Completes at Least 80 Percent of His Passes a Sixth Time

Indiana Finishes with 151 Yards of Total Offense

Ohio State held Indiana to 83 yards rushing and just 68 yards passing in the Hoosiers' first loss of the season. Only against Western Michigan in September have the Buckeyes held an opponent to a shallower tally of total yards in a game, when the Broncos failed to break the century mark in a 56-0 shutout. But fans require some grander context to truly appreciate the brilliance of OSU's latest performance.

Indiana's final output on Saturday was the lowest total of offensive yards Ohio State has conceded to a Big Ten opponent since the Buckeyes played the Hoosiers in a 54-7 domination during the 2021 season. IU posted only 128 total yards that game, as recently medically-retired now-Michigan quarterback Jack Tuttle then led the Hoosiers in passing attempts but completed only four of his seven throws for 41 yards and Indiana's lone touchdown of the day in the first quarter.

More impressively, Saturday's latest win over the Hoosiers saw the least amount of yards conceded to a ranked opponent since Ohio State's win over then-No. 21 Iowa during the 2005 season. The Hawkeyes managed just 137 total yards on the afternoon and negative nine rushing yards as the Buckeyes cruised to a 31-6 victory in which they never trailed.

Buckeye Defense Records Five Sacks

Silver Bullets, never leave us. Five sacks on the afternoon for the Buckeyes matches the team's season high in the 2024 campaign, tying the previous best in the season opener against Akron. That also represents more sacks than OSU had in any regular season game last year, and the most posted in any conference game since the team's 2022 win over Maryland.

Will Howard Continues to Complete 80% or More of His Pass Attempts

Although not garnering hype among national college football spectators similar to that of other players at his position such as Dillon Gabriel or Cam Ward, Will Howard on Saturday continued to quietly put forth one of the most impressive seasons for any quarterback in OSU history. The greatest cigarette-smashing signal caller since Smokin' Jay Cutler completed all but four of his 26 passing attempts for two touchdowns and just one deflected interception on the afternoon.

I couldve sworn those IU defensive backs looked competitive against the Cheaters' wide outs. I wonder what's different?

Feeling the most relaxed/comfortable about this game as I have in many years. The blueprint is clear - attack and pressure their offense, our corners can cover and this defense will feast. After the Indiana game and what we saw when we pinned our ears back should make us feel incredibly confident.

They have talent on the DL - great, Will can throw for 300+ and Emeka will get his moment.

The only thing I'm worried about is how dirty they'll play knowing they have nothing to play for ... another alligator roll to an ankle is likely incoming.
I’m not concerned about them playing dirty to be honest.
They aren’t going to be able to drive the field against our D we just need to avoid the bonehead mistakes that give them those long runs.

Someone needs to be glued to Loveland at all times too. Don’t want to see him open all day like he’s seemed to be against about everyone else this year.
That’s really the game isn’t it? Just avoid the stupid mistakes and force them to somehow be consistent on offense.

They don’t have the OL, the skill or especially the QB to put drives together. So really it’s just don’t give up the explosive plays.

Really is just avoid the bad mistakes and stop the run.

Sonny should be a great fit for that role, I'm sure Hancock will get some time in there as well. This defense is really set up well to shut them down in every possible sense. scUM is going to have to dust off the trick plays in this one.

I think they already mostly put all the Mickey Mouse plays on film to beat Sparty and not get totally destroyed by Oregon. I hope we are well prepared for any of them
