Squad snapshot: Previous World Cups have seen the U.S. strong in goal and defense, but light in attack. In this edition, the opposite appears to be true.
Questions abound in goal, as well as the center of defense, with Ream, 38, still penciled in to start despite questions about his mobility. In attack, for the first time in over a decade, the U.S. have a standout striker in Balogun with the likes of Pulisic, McKennie and Weah charged with getting him the ball -- or creating opportunities for themselves.
The U.S. certainly have more attacking options than they're used to. That includes full backs Robinson and Dest, who will be critical to the USMNT's attack, with Robinson providing service from out wide and Dest taking on the role of attacking wild card. Therefore, the center of midfield will be key in helping to shield the backline with Adams providing the steel and Cardoso (if he can get fit) the cultured passing.
The intangibles settle on the fact that the U.S. are playing at home. Will the USMNT use the home crowd to spur it on, or will the weight of expectations prove to be too heavy? It will be up to manager Mauricio Pochettino to make sure the team is prepared and possesses a confident mindset.

Ohio State receives key answer from elite quarterback in 2027
Ohio State has had four-star QB Brady Edmunds in the class since Dec. of 2024. The Buckeyes want to have two quarterbacks in the class, but UCLA continues to push for Edmunds to stay home in California.Ryan Day’s staff has shown interest in several other 2027 quarterbacks, and the latest is committed to another Big Ten school.
The Buckeyes recently paid a visit to Millard South (NE) QB Trae Taylor at his school and are trying to get him to make a trip to Columbus. To this point, no visit is planned and there’s no sign of it changing. However, the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ commitment is at least keeping the door open.
“At this point in the process Ohio State stands where the other schools stand,” Taylor said, via On3. “I’m committed to not taking any trips to campus. But I’m definitely not going to ignore any coach that calls me. The way football is now I refuse to burn any bridges.”
You don’t see a ton of firm commitment in today’s era of recruiting, as Taylor is going about things. The nation’s No. 4 quarterback in the soon-to-be senior class has been committed to Nebraska for a year now and looks solid. Still, the Buckeyes are at least trying to get into the mix if anything changes.
Taylor is a 6-foot-3, 192-pound quarterback who would nicely fit Day’s system in Columbus. Ohio State has been able to pick up late recruiting wins at quarterback in the past with players like the late Dwayne Haskins Jr. and even CJ Stroud out of California.
A couple of dominoes have to fall to figure out which direction Ohio State will go in 2027. The most important thing for the Buckeyes will be seeing if they can keep Edmunds in the class. If not, the Buckeyes will be ramping up the pressure on Taylor and others.

“My recruitment’s been shut down for a minute, I just haven’t made it public,” Brown went on to say. “Me and Coach Day had a conversation, so it just felt great shutting down my recruitment, knowing how bad I still wanted to be there, and knowing how bad Coach Day still wants me to be there and the staff. And I just can’t wait to get up there and be great.”
Ohio State wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton has been able to build a good relationship with Brown and it’s a key part of this. The Buckeyes not having to fight off other schools for Brown is what Ohio State needed in this class.
Brown is the No. 4 wideout and No. 21 overall player in the class of 2027, per 247 Sports Composite. In an era where we don’t see recruitments completely shut down even when players are committed, it’s a nice development to start the week.
Ohio State can now focus on building out the rest of the class, where they have 11 commitments. The month of May and June will both be very key in what Ohio State’s class looks like for 2027.

Ohio State lost CB Davison Igbinosun to the NFL after last season and they need a new boundary corner to step up and lead the way. Former five-star recruit Devin Sanchez played a lot as a freshman last season, 13 games to be exact. Sanchez made 15 tackles and two passes defended, and is set up to be Ohio State’s potential No. 1 cornerback this coming season. Sanchez has all the talent in the world to be a No. 1 cornerback at Ohio State, and ideally, it starts as a true sophomore. Ohio State’s most important returning player on defense is Kenyatta Jackson, who could have been an NFL draft pick this offseason. Jackson broke out last season with 6.5 sacks; his previous high was 1.5, posted in his redshirt freshman and sophomore seasons. Losing Caleb Downs is a huge loss for the Buckeyes and they need several safeties to step up in 2026. Jaylen McClain is expected to be Ohio State’s leader at safety after he flashed ability in his first season as a starter last year. McClain played each of his first two seasons in Columbus including 53 tackles as a sophomore. McClain should be able to take a leap for the Buckeyes with more responsibilities on his plate. I think McClain has a chance to take a big step with some ball production in 2026.

Sayin is a former Alabama transfer, so he knows how the portal works, and he was recently asked how he approached the idea of transferring out after last season with Ohio State.

Every player has to weigh the idea of transferring after each season, it’s just how college football goes. We see players in good situations transfer to other teams for a bigger payday all the time. Sayin though, never even thought about leaving Columbus.“I didn’t talk to anybody, and there was no reason to talk to me,” Sayin told On3’s Chris Low recently. “I wasn’t going anywhere, I would say everybody probably already knew that and wasn’t going to waste their time. There was zero reason for Julian Sayin to walk away from Ohio State
Quarterbacks want to play at Ohio State because of Day’s ability to develop them, but it makes it even easier when you’re throwing the ball to Jeremiah Smith. Ohio State will return its star wide receiver for his junior season and Bo Jackson is back to lead the running back position as a sophomore. Add in an experienced offensive line and there was really no reason for Sayin to even think about leaving.Ohio State brought in an NFL offensive coordinator for what could be Sayin’s last season in college. Working with Arthur Smith is going to be a positive for the 6-foot-1 quarterback and getting ready for the next level.
Sayin needs to take a step in his second season starting both in the pocket and showing the ability to run when needed. If Sayin can take a step forward in his second season, Ohio State’s going to have a good shot at accomplishing its biggest goals.
