I'm not trying to strip everything that JT accomplished over the last decade; although I can certainly see how I can come off that way. I, in all honesty, am just so god fucking damned pissed off at the guy. I trusted him. After his ncaa baptism in 2004, I truly believed in what he was doing and was probably one of the first to tout the apr rates three years ago on this board. JT did some good; he did a lot of good. But...like some cursed Shakespearean character, he seemed to have this flaw that undid it all, taking the rest of us down with him. FUCK!

So when I feel someone might be overreaching in the opposite direction regarding his positive influence or (not you) whitewashing his transgressions, I tend to open up with both barrels. I do tend to regret that it comes off as directed at the posters that I'm debating rather than the larger shitty issue that we're all dealing with. Such can be the nature of the interweb tubes.

I think my next post is going to be a fucking hamburger recipe.:osu:

Cheers.

You could go back to making fun of Fredo of Ohio. My sister is on the faculty there, so that [Mark May] never gets old.

Don't worry. If she's young enough, she can still get published, make a name for herself in academic circles and use the place as a stepping stone to a real university.

That's like me, only I'm on the other side. When I see people overreaching in the opposite direction wishing death upon tOSU football, I tend to whitewash JT's transgressions.

Ditto, The last thing I want to see is an OSU team act like a Pete Carroll team, or be led by a guy with the ethics of Jackie Sherrill or Lane Kiffin, or the ego of a Charlie Weiss. That's a very demanding set of expectations, ones that may not lend themselves to national championships, but ones that will leave you with a team that deserves the respect of the university it represents.

It is easy for us to be judgmental or critical of the actions of others. We haven't had to walk a day in their shoes, haven't had to deal with the stresses and pressures they deal with, we don't have to have a relationship with the student athletes at the center of all of this controversy. I think it is unfair for any of us to say what we would do in his shoes, or how we would handle it, or that he is a wretched human being for not being perfect. We can't begin to comprehend what was going through Jim Tressel's mind. If we could, we may find that what we would have done would have been exactly the same thing had we lived his life.

I'm completely neutral on this topic. I think it is crappy, but I think he is facing the consequences. At the end of the day, that is all he owes. What he did was fantastic for Ohio State football. In 20 years we'll remember him as a great coach. His departure will be an ugly aside that is seldom spoken of.

Did he deserve to lose his job for breaking rules? I truly don't know. But I would be just as careful to avoid vilifying Tressel or making comparisons to the way other coaches and programs run things as I would be excusing the behavior and dismissing it as what everyone else does.

We're all entitled to our opinions, but until we can actually live a day in their shoes and experience their experiences the content of those opinions consists of larger quantities of ignorance than awareness.

Jim Tressel isn't tearing Buckeye nation apart. We are, and what good does it do anyone?

I've been a fan of Jim Tressel as OSU's football coach since at latest 11/24/01, and continue to be one for the most part. But the philosophy you're describing above - "you can't judge him because you aren't him" - is not a good one, in my opinion. If taken seriously, it means that nothing any person does can ever be judged. People are, and should be, held to certain standards regardless of their personal experiences. To have it otherwise would be to destroy any meaningful notion of right or wrong.

I guess I could have worded that better. I'm pro-judgment of a person's actions, not of a person in general. If that makes sense. What I mean by that is: you can think what Tressel did sucked or was a slime ball move, but to call him a slime ball is going a bit far.

I don't see why some think hs is St. Tressell and others evil incarnate..he was a Div.1 Football Coach..nothinng more. He was committed to tOSU and his players. He screwed up and is gone..it happens Woody Mike Leach..and countless others. If JT was 1-9 against scum and has a .650 win percentage..he wouldve had no support even if he never broke a rule and was Mother Teresa off the field.

Look at Randy Shannon....turned Miami around "off the field" and got fired.
