i can't believe this has become an issue again. why, exactly, can these players be compensated with gold and jewelry while they are in school? and why then is it an issue for them to convert their possessions into currency? if the ncaa is going to allow students to be adorned with thousands of dollars of apparel and jewels then they shouldn't be crying when these students decide to make the exchange. what if one of the players sent the money home so his family could afford shoes for his siblings, or put food on the table? and for all of the people claiming these guys are somehow disrespecting the program, let me just point out that beating michigan and winning the big 10 isn't what it used to be. every player on the current team has never failed to do either...

At first blush, it would not make sense to vacate the season because what the players did is no different today than what it was in December.

I agree with this...how can it be a vacatable offense if it wasn't before? The players would have to be declared ineligible for us to have to vacate wins, and there is no indication of that happening.

Also from Dodd...interesting note about JT talking to the team:

Less interesting but predictable, from that link:

Ohio University professor and noted NCAA reformer David Ridpath just spoke about the NCAA's unethical conduct bylaw. If the Yahoo! Sports story is true, "that should warrant some kind of suspension, some kind of lengthly suspension. Other coaches have been fired over it."

Apologies if it's already here, Dodd weighs in, as usual:

Dodd:
In case you haven't noticed, we have entered a new era of accountability in college sports. Maybe it's more media outlets. Maybe it's more media knowing how to file a Freedom of Information Act request. Maybe cheaters are getting sloppy. It doesn't matter. In this digital era, there is a record of everything. Sadly, that even includes "Charlie's Korner." We, the media, have taken the next step up in scrutinizing public institutions. It is up to college athletics to erect the next firewall

What a self-righteous dick bag.

I'm sure I'm overthinking this, but why a presser and not just a released statement? Let's say, as a completely hypothetical example, Tressel decides to dance, sidestep, and walk over the issue in the opening statement. The first question he'll get (regardless of what he says anyway, I imagine) is something along the line of "Coach Tressel, are you categorically denying any and all knowledge of these events prior to December when the school reported it?" in which case he'll either have to 1) issue a categorical denial anyway, or 2) he'll dance around it again and look even worse having done it twice. Seems to me issuing a statement would be better for him.

Perspective:

Jim Tressel (allegedly) failed to report a set of NCAA rules violations. No crimes were committed and nobody was in danger of being physically harmed.

Ohio University's head football coach plead no contest to DUI - which is a real crime that could have led to people being killed.

By all means though, little brother - let the hate and indignation flow!

I'm kinda hoping Gee and JT come out like "Yeah we fuckin' cheated. What the fuck you gonna do about it bitches? Yahoo...we comin' for you!!!" Gene Smith's in the background with a beard and his head shaved lookin' like Suge Knight just jumpin' at reporters, making them flinch then laughing hysterically like a crazy person. Then lasers burst out, smoke fills the room, and all three back off the podium area with the DX hand signs for "SUCK IT".

Either that or they deny all wrongdoing and go apeshit on Yahoo.
