Since it's arguable (perhaps not) that Gene Smith and the administration has done everything wrong in handling this situation (from the start), I guess the next logical step is the following:

Gene Smith announces that Ohio State will be wearing Nike Pro Combat uniforms against Nebraska or Michigan (both Adidas schools).

I think that's logical considering they've done arguably the wrong thing at every step.

It's classic stuff for sure. Back when it was mostly just cars and stuff I was sort of hoping for Pryor and Tressel as the Bandit and the Snowman and Gee and Smith as Buford T Justice and whatever the fuck his dumbass son's name is. (You could also do Gee and Smtih as Big and Little Enos and Emmert and Delany ast The Justices.)

Not sure who gets to be Flash.

Until last year about this time, the Ohio State football team's deepening NCAA problems, such as the ones that led to Terrelle Pryor's departure Tuesday, would have presented a considerable opportunity for the University of Hawaii.

As soon as the NCAA gumshoes descended upon Columbus, Ohio, the Warriors would have been on the phone offering consoling words and a plan to help soften any impending postseason sanctions.

Some called it the "paradise plan" and UH's spiel went like this: If you can't go to a bowl, then why not play a 13th regular-season game here and treat it like one? If you have to do NCAA hard time, where better than in paradise?

It helped teams under the NCAA hammer touch all the important bases, keeping their players motivated, recruits interested and boosters donating while grabbing TV time.

And of all the miscreants who found their way to our shores, nobody loved it more or took better advantage of it than Alabama.

That, it turns out, was the problem.

One minute the Crimson Tide were getting their hides tanned by the NCAA for booster payments to recruits and the next they were out sunning them on the beach in Waikiki. Its unrepentant fans waving "NCAA, glad you"re not here" signs at Aloha Stadium.

Not exactly the image of contrition the NCAA was looking for. And that did not go over well back at headquarters.

Damn, I had such high hopes.

I had a thought the other day (before Pryor left and the story about how he made $40k off of his autographs broke) about what if OSU cleaned house and self imposed sanctions on itself? It was (and still is) just speculation on what kind of punishment OSU would receive, with people's opinions ranging from just a slap on the wrist (like losing a few scholarships, forfeiting past games) to a USC-style punishment (30ish scholarships lost and 2 year bowl ban).
So since it appears we will not be in contention for a NC this year I thought OSU might as well throw the hammer on itself and ban itself from playing in a bowl game this year, as well as firing Smith and cleaning up the compliance department, in an attempt to win favor with the NCAA higher ups.

Then the Pryor story breaks. Great. And rumors are swirling that OSU knew about it and did nothing (sure more will come out later). The "Lack of Institutional Control" phrase is getting more and more realistic, in my mind at least and that is not good. So a multi-year bowl ban and massive scholarship cuts seem likely, a la USC.

So my question now becomes do you think OSU can still mitigate the hammer of the NCAA at all by imposing sanctions on itself? Now obviously it will take more than a one year bowl ban but I am not sure how far the NCAA will take it.

Yeah, Pryor will not be forced to talk to the NCAA anymore but say the IRS gets involved, ugh.

What do you think would be worse, multiple year bowl ban or losing 30 scholarships? I'd say the bowl ban. I think OSU can still recruit well enough, even with limited scholarships. But the kids need something to play for. If they are barred from going bowling for say 2 years that would hurt a lot on the recruiting trail (although USC appears to be doing ok, but their scholarship reductions are starting now so we will see how that goes).

JMO and I am just thinking out loud. But it appears next year will be tough with the QB situation, new/young coach, etc... it's doubtful we reach a BCS bowl, let alone a NC appearance. So why not take the hammer down on ourselves and start the punishment a little early?

That "promise" Tressel made these players make ending up back-firing completely.

I can only imagine that this could have blown over better if tOSU/Tressel just cut ties and told these guys to declare for the draft.

Yes, hindsight is always 20/20. However I'm sure Tressel made certain promises to the player's parents during the recruiting process concerning making sure that the players are able to get their degree, etc. If he would have kicked them off the team after the first offense he would have been subject to criticism too. He was really in a "no win situation".

Of course, TS never had the hype, attention and adulation before he even stepped foot on campus that was the case with the other two. That might have been in the back of his mind when deciding to get his [Mark May] together. He knew that he might fade into bolivion otherwise. The other two had been told they were destined for NFL greatness since middle school, and Ohio State was just a necessary pit stop along the way.

I hate to say it, but the next coach will inevitably need to have a much more zero tolerance approach (and the next AD/President won't allow him to have anything but), so a TS turnaround will sadly be unlikely in the future.
