I keep seeing folks saying, in effect "this (the SI article) is no big deal. It breaks very little new ground. It's a rehash of the past 5 months of crap."

For those of us who have been following this story closely-to-obsessively that's true.

But for the college football fan who hasn't followed that closely, to have it all laid out as the cover story on the biggest and most influential sports magazine in the country is a pretty big deal.

Fair and accurate or not, it draws a direct line between Coach Tressel and the issues surrounding the NCAA investigation that tOSU is currently enduring.

It makes the tattoo-for-trinkets story much bigger.

It makes the cars-for-players story much bigger.

It introduces a new players-smoking-weed issue - along with a players-cozy-with-dope-dealers angle.

It draws attention to what some will call a pattern of deception by Coach Tressel going back many years.

It's probably not fair to say "this is the story that got Tressel fired (or caused him to resign)" but it is probably fair to say that this is the straw that broke the camels back.

It's a very, very big deal.

A note to everyone:

Remember the [censored]s that stopped rocking the tOSU gear today. Remember them for as long as they live. Don't let them back on the wagon. Don't let them say "I've always loved tOSU. Don't let them share in the thrill of victory after stepping under an umbrella during this [Mark May]storm.

[censored] all you fans that aren't still down. [censored] you in your ear holes with a tattooed cock.

I wear an Ohio State hat every day. Every fucking day. Win, lose, tie, whatever. I'm still proud to be a Buckeye.

Networks are all about the $$$...

tOSU = HUGE interest in Columbus, and around the country, so if they suspect wrongdoing, they're gonna go all out. They don't owe anything to the university. It strikes me as incredibly stupid, or obtuse, to be the start QB of Ohio State and drive around in, apparently, multiple expensive new cars when there is a very public investigation going on. People can be angry about the coverage all they want, but the bottom line is that it is a HUGE story, and the "alleged" perpitrators are making their job pretty damn easy.

I just want the truth out there, the necessary changes to be made, and to start with a clean slate. I'm well aware that this stuff goes on at most major universities, but for it to continue so publicly while under the gun is infuriating to me, and seems either incredibly arrogant or incredibly stupid for it to be continuing right now...at this moment. The whole scandel has really soured me towards the current incarnation of Ohio State football. I'll always be a fan of the people that do it the right way, and I hope we are now moving in that direction, because apparently, a lot of the kids and beaurocracy in C-bus right now aren't and I'm not sure how anyone can see it any other way.

Not disagreeing with anything you said. But it sure does make me wonder why media in Alabama weren't tailing Cam Newton like this.

well apparently there still could be more, as the producer for the dan patrick show just said:

SI's George Dohrmann said he's not done investigating OSU football. "There's a lot more stuff there." Dohrmann said.

best of luck to you buddy....

and yes i understand why the dispatch and 10tv is going after pryor...like i said, i just wished it wasnt from a local media outlet that is opening up doors to see if theres anything behind it...as someone stated earlier, the reason most SEC schools do not get caught is because none of this undercover, john gotti survellience from their local media, would ever happen....but pryor has also not done a very great job of hiding this....he has been blantantly dumb about the whole car thing especially throughout this entire process of the investigation...its almost like as soon as a new allegation would come up from a media source, pryor would go out and get a newer and more awesome car...someone on the team needs to get him a bus pass or lend him a mountain bike that he can ride around on now

the car that 10tv caught him in after doing undercover surveillance like he was a cappo in the mafia was a 2009 or 2010 white dodge challenger

Thanks for sharing the link.

The undercover surveillance and the proliferation of TP's address and personal info on the news is a little creepy...

Maybe it's me, but I'm not seeing the direct line between Tressel and Fine Line Ink. I see players who found out they could trade memorabilia that doesn't normally have a "seller's market" for cash, free tattoos, and weed.

If Tressel fostered that relationship by telling his players they could trade awards for Ink through his "main-man" Eddy Rife, I'd see the direct line.

As it stands, I see selfish players doing stupid things, and a coach getting thrown under the bus. I agree with Jason Whitlock that this is one of the more noble things he's seen in CFB. He's obviously making a joke, but I don't view it as damning on Tressel.

If anything, the repeated behavior of Pryor and new "test" cars is an issue I'd think he could monitor. That irks me much more than not monitoring who is arriving to practice with new ink.

No offense to anyone, and I'm certainly generalizing, but I don't see a 55 year old Tressel being up to snuff on current tattoo trends.

*Edited for more discussion

Tressel also isn't going to know who has traded their Big 10 ring for weed. But if a player tests positive, he is certainly punished. There are several current players, and one notified in the SI article, who have had run-ins with failed tests. I'm not sure Tressel is going to track down where the player got it, what they sold to acquire it, etc...

College football in the south is a whole other animal. The ethics are very different.
All due respect, but Bama obsessively tails and turns in Auburn, Auburn obsessively follows and tried to find dirt on Bama, Tennessee and Bama do the same, etc.

The South is more obsessed with football than the Big-10, present maniacs excepting. The press follows the programs just as obsessively. If you do not think that the Bama press followed the Cam story, it is because you are up there and Alabama is down here. Nobody in Tuscaloosa has any idea about the Dispatch and what they print, nor would I expect y'all to follow the Alabama press and its quest for Cam dirt.

Take my word for it, the last thing in the world the Cam story has attached to it is an uninterested press and public. The Cam story is not a matter of "if" but "when". Y'all have rows of fertile ground to plow bashing our football ethics, but this allegation - that nobody cares about the Cam scandal - is not one of them.

The problem with this argument is that it is the reponsibility of the coach to oversee his players and the AD to oversee the entire department. This is where labels like "failure to monitor" and "lack of institutional control" begin to pop up. Fair or not (I happen to think it is fair), there has to be accountability. If these are isolated incidents, you can write it off. When it appears to be much more, heads need to roll.

The cars, housing, tattoos are all ugly. Throw in the drugs...God help us. That's beyond forgivable to me. You're getting a free ride to a great university, the opportunity to play in front of 105,000 fans, a stage to build a lucrative professional football career and you can't stay off the weed? Well, fuck you.

This is certainly true...and a fair point.
