The second block quote is connected because its an example of a source that isn't one of these tattoo parlor scumbags, accusing a player of giving tickets for a car. In this case the Department of Justice if the author is to believed.

2 examples in the story of some pretty big deal type stuff and from what I see its open mic night at the BP bar to see who can be more dismissive of the article.

I agree that the Rose quote, DOJ inquiry, and the marijuana (in addition to more players having been involved) are the biggest parts of the story. I've read Rose's comment three times and I still don't really know what he is saying. The DOJ/Martin bit is obviously the biggest deal, but it still seems like it's part of the broader narrative that we already knew (excluding the marijuana). Players traded their memorabilia/stuff for tattoos, cash, other stuff (cars), and received improper benefits. The story is obviously a big deal, but I don't really see it as being the bombshell that it was hyped to be.

while i agree that this article is designed as a hatchet job, the fact is that the shit mentioned in the article has been going down under the unwatchful eyes of JT and the rest of the administration and none of it should have been . I used to believe that JT "sold his soul" to get and keep Pryor, but it appears that JT allowed the system to play out all along. He has been fired and rightfully so. Now a lot more heads should roll. Amazed that so many on this board dismiss this.

here's the thing

IMO from the beginning, this story really didn't cause JT's resignation no matter what the author says. It does provide a pretty good timeline that this has been going on for quite longer than the one time with 6 players that Gene Smith has stated.

The real issue for me in this story is this and it doesn't have anything to with coach.

1.) This type of activity has been going on since 2002 and compliance was unaware of this.

2.) In the December press conference Gene Smith said with authority that this was an isolated incident and that a internal investigation found nothing further. yet a SI reporter an outsider uncovered 28 players in a couple of weeks and got people on the record as well.

This falls on the AD and compliance. We're getting hit with LOIC whether we like it or not. And that will suck.

Agreed, I don't see how we could avoid it. Don't really deserve to either. Just because we self reported a ton of minor stuff doesn't excuse missing the major issues that were flooding our program.

Up to this point I personally hadn't seen anything about the DOJ alerting OSU. If thats old news then I apologize but I'm getting the sense this seems like no big deal to people which is amazing to me.

I really thought that once reality set in, that once Tressel was gone people would come to grips with there being a problem, not continue down the "its all a witch hunt" path.

My personal view on this article is more about an NCAA investigation into Ohio State, not the character of Jim Tressel. From a character standpoint, Tressel gets hit hard. From an investigation into Ohio State, it's some added hearsay into something the NCAA already knew about.

I suppose the NCAA might add a little bit for it, yet my fear was actual links to payments for cars or other huge items. That is what killed USC, the paper trail in the Reggie Bush stuff. This article didn't do any of that. So I suppose I am somewhat dismissive on that end because it's not a solid link to huge payments from boosters. Simply more of the same, and all hearsay and conjecture. Plus, as we all know, college athletes get kickbacks all the time for this type of stuff. About 4 players a year claimed by sources that aren't the most reliable? Honestly, I would expect more.

I haven't read many recent comments to the effect Coach Tressel should have been retained. Nor many that defend Gene Smith (whose tenure I can't see lasting much longer).

I'm not dismissing anything, he should have (or the compliance department should have) absolutely known what was going on. But the article brings no new revelations and all in all reads like writer has a vendetta against JT and Ohio State. In other words, its crap.

The DOJ alerting OSU is what sparked the original investigation in December Jax. Which is why I said it would be odd for OSU to listen to part of their info and investigate but ignore the Martin case.

However the article reads that they threw in some facts with a bunch of rumor and innuendo in hopes of making those rumors seem more credible by association.

Another possibility is, Did SI bother to "investigate" if some of these incidents were self-reported?

What I'm seeing is a bunch of sharks in a feeding frenzy right now. Hell USC wasn't getting hit this bad by the media, alumni, former players, etc. I do not think the additional comments are that bad, it's just fuel to the fire.

I do think OSU needs to readdress WHO they recruit as far as character goes though. I will not mention names. :bonk:

Really? Seems pretty textbook to me. Self reported or not, there was an issue with "institutional control". Again, step back and imagine this was going on at another program. We'd be howling for armageddon.
