Just happy you got your "I told you so" post in. Well done.Jake;1929566; said:As I've said many times, The Ohio State University was here long before Jim Tressel and it will be around long after he's gone, but when your extremely successful head coach has to resign it is a big deal.
Then again, this thread has never been short on rationalizations.
SI's @georgedohrmann says timing of Tressel's resignation "will make sense after you read" his story being posted later today.

This is a big deal in that I loved Jim Tressel. I loved how he dealt with the media, players, and fans. I loved that he beat TSUN. Most of all, I love how he did all the above with class.
But, in the grand scheme of things...this isn't a big deal. There have been many coaches that resigned were fired, let go, left, etc...and yet, tOSU remains successful over the decades...more so than any other program. So no, it's not a big deal.
The dude is in PR mode to help his article get some hits now that it is about Ohio State's former head coach. A lot less interesting that it is about the former coach. And fuck that guy. He is shit.Seriously, fuck that guy. If he's going to claim Tressel's head based on some shitty SI report then I've lost all of what was left of my faith in modern "journalism."

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sports/stories/2011/05/30/ohio-state-news.html?sid=101Less than three months after President E. Gordon Gee and Athletic Director Gene Smith said they fully supported their embattled coach, mounting pressure, a pending NCAA disciplinary hearing and new revelations about the culture of the program forced the university to act on their once-revered coach, sources said.

keep deluding yourself and telling yourself it isn't a big deal. the facts speak otherwise. the Senator. the Teflon Don. is resigning. it's a HUGE deal.

(Edit - separating this part from above. Gordon didn't write this; it is my supposition.)
That may have been one of the final straws - probably enough to push a trustee or two over to the Tressel must go side.
Well, to whats been made publicly available regarding the NCAA investigation, nothing has tangibly changed from March to May 30th. Same investigation that's ongoing. What has changed was the media frenzy driving much speculation and allegations. Having Tressel resign is simply the most parsimonious solution to Ohio State's various media/compliance problems. Occam's Razor.i will reply with the risk of the ban. how much class he did actually have, considering the way he's resigning in disgrace? he broke the rules. blatantly. there is no justification.

I'm disappointed that Ohio State's undying support of Tressel ended this weekend. Unless new charges are brought ahead, I would have rather tOSU taken the beating, show the collective strength as a university to deal with the penalties and then have him retire of his own accord. Now it looks like they just wanted to go with the easy way out. However, I reserve the right to change that opinion if new information/charges/accusations are found and made available.
