Ok, so we have one instance of a title that the state has not matching with what a player and the compliance office is stating. One. ONE. Not a single other title out of almost 50 have been mentioned as being a $0 sale. You obviously are going to see anything that comes out of tOSU as a legal stonewall/script, and unfortunately the NCAA won't be saying much more until August. But I still don't see infractions that have been proven or even pretty well confirmed yet.

okay. there have been at least a few dozen deals between kniffin/maxton/auto direct and osu players/players' families. why did gibson of all people get this alleged $0 deal? i doubt anyone here can answer that. if you can't answer that, then perhaps it would be best if you don't make assumptions based on limited information.

I have no idea if Ohio charges a sales tax on used cars, but I've... ummm 'seen' people in Arkansas put a $0 down on a title/sales receipt for a used car to avoid paying taxes.

Not that I would have any direct personal knowledge of such practice.

That is the exact issue.....I dont think Thad got a free car and if he did they wouldnt put 0 in the bill of sale....this was to avoid sales tax....thats why the dealer immedeatly answered no we put the sale price in the recording of any title...(paraphrasing).he said I have no idea how that happened because the real issue for him is tax evasion...do i think shady shit goes on around the program? yes.... I have a hard time thinking tOSU is this fucking dumb though...but what do I know

private sales often include a reduced price on the title. we're not talking about a private sale, however. i would be highly surprised if a title from a dealership could pass muster with $0 as the listed purchase price. think about it. $0. if a dealership were providing illegal benefits to an ohio state football player, how stupid would they be to sell a car for... nothing? giving the player a loaner or listing the title price for, say, a half of the actual sale price makes a lot more sense.

and, again, why does only one of about fifty get this special $0 deal? oh, that's right... gibson was a heisman... err... all-american... err... lombardi... err.. well, uhh... starter. yep, i'm sure he got this special deal because he was the only starter among the fifty.

I'm already pretty disillusioned with this whole fiasco, so anything short of decomposing bodies found buried in Tressel's backyard isn't going to faze me at this point.

Honestly at this point, I don't care about what the news releases. I just want to know what the punishment is going to be.

If a guy who gets free tickets to bowl games doctors up a title so that a player can duck taxes (when said doctoring was not routinely done for "normal" non-player sales transactions) - could that act of saving him taxes be termed an "improper benefit" under NCAA rules?

That's the only thing that pops to my mind so far...and that assumes that the title thing is not otherwise explained away. Just brain storming like a dirty stinking NCAA investigator. :p

I doubt this will amount to much as compliance, according to Archie, has been working with these dealers all along. Some thing could have gotten by them but it's not like they weren't making an effort to keep tabs on car sales.

I'm just writing this latest bit of information as the Dispatch grasping for straws in terms of trying to uncover more dirty laundry that's not really there. That's not to say I think more serious stuff will be uncovered or not, but I feel like this is much ado about nothing.

your brainstorming is what has already been alleged by many on many boards. if there was illegal activity, it was either that gibson got a car for free or that he didn't pay the sales tax.

how would kniffin "doctor up a title" by himself anyway? wouldn't the finance department at maxton and auto direct have to be in on the gig, too?

Cue 500 word passive/aggressive post that will spin up the cliffdivers in 5...4...3...2...1...

So that's the history: Incriminating, but (as far as we know) strictly circumstantial.

For the immediate future, though, it's another 40 to 50 more coals added to the increasingly intense fire under Jim Tressel's chair. And not only Tressel's. The coach may be solely responsible ? or at least seems willing to accept sole responsibility ? for the overbearing NCAA heat following his nine-month campaign of silence and deception to cover up violations that threatened the eligibility of multiple starters. But if the scope of the allegations continues to expand ? if the new investigation uncovers yet another flank of widespread, systematic improper benefits involving multiple players over several years ? the less plausible it will be to pin it all on an otherwise good coach who backed himself into a corner with one bad decision, and the more it looks like a broad lack of control that indicts the entire athletic department.
