That's true, I'd forgotten about that. That mostly eliminates "The Mayor's" objection to that idea - although I'm not sure how it is that Yahoo got their hands on it.

If that did happen - that Tressel reported what he knew when he knew it, someone else swept it under the rug, and now Tressel's taking responsibility for it - then someone would have to really be kicking himself for letting it come to light through a research project on BigTen expansion (or however it might have come to light).

The general consesus is that Yahoo got the information due to a leak in the NCAA. OSU self reported this stuff and Yahoo found out through contacts at the NCAA. Same way Yahoo seemed to be ahead of the news cycle on violations from other schools. They find out from an NCAA source before a letter of allegations is released to the public.

Unless this isn't right? If not, please send me in the right direction.

Football team spending =/= athletic department revenue.

During all of the expansion frenzy when people were looking at how much money schools were making/spending a lot of the numbers popped up and IIRC correctly while SEC schools do tend to make/spend more from/on the football teams but the overall AD revenues (and spending) were actually higher in the Big Ten on average.

I can't find the link to the most recent break downs but did find a comparison of 07-08 school year numbers & the individual budgets for various years including 09-10 (the most recently released).

Bottom line: [Mark May] happened that everyone with half a brain understands happens everywhere. Coaches typically construct elaborate self-protection mechanisms so as not to know about it.

Chris Cicero screws the pooch by creating a paper trail that documents that Coach Tressel's Veil of Secrecy has been penetrated, as he has now been informed of NCAA violations similar to those that occur everywhere from Auburn to Grand Valley State. But the coach's deniability option has been removed, and oh by the way, the spectre of drug involvement is raised by the feckless Cicero, along with the spectre of FBI involvement. So not only is there the obvious motivation to cover things up so as not to [censored] up the season, there's the additional motivation to cover things up to protect a law-enforcement investigation and the interests of student-athletes who may have drug problems (now refuted, thank God).

WTF. It's not so much that Jim Tressel is being asked to fall on his sword for Ohio State. It's that he's about to be asked to fall on his sword for the entire structure of Big Time College Football, since this [Mark May] happens everywhere from Auburn to Grand Valley State.

Sucks, but there it is. With this hue and cry from sports "journalists" increasing in both volume and shrillness, I now don't expect Coach Tressel to be our coach in 2012. And it saddens me greatly.

I think people need to calm down for a second. We don't have a load of evidence that Tressel is going to fall on a sword for anything just yet. The NCAA has served a notice of allegations, that's all. The hearing hasn't happened yet, the final decision certainly hasn't happened yet. The NCAA has laid potential charges onto the table, that doesn't mean that all of them are going to stick or that it's going to be a complete butt raping by the NCAA in it's penalties. The fact that the whole "lack of institutional control" isn't even being EXPLORED would indicate that we aren't starting off in the worst position. That means the absolute worse case scenario is the "repeat offender" label and Tressel being found in violation of 10.1 or whatever. Generally the "worse case scenario" isn't going to be reached here, the actual charges and penalties that stick will be fall somewhere in between there.

Mandel contrasts the USC and tOSU situations.

SI.com

But USC fans will be disappointed if they think Ohio State is about to suffer a similarly harsh fate. The Bush ruling was an indictment of USC's entire athletic culture, particularly in regard to compliance, which the NCAA obviously felt was lacking. The school has since beefed up those areas considerably under AD Pat Haden. Conversely, Ohio State's case was arguably a model of compliance. The school itself uncovered the infamous e-mails incriminating Jim Tressel and reported them accordingly. The Notice of Allegations revealed Monday targeted no one in the athletic department outside of Tressel, who conducted a one-man cover-up to protect his players' eligibility. Those players have been punished, and Tressel will be too, but I don't see mass scholarship cuts or a bowl ban in OSU's future.

Cont'd ...

A sports journalist that uses reason and logic..amazing

Why is Urban Meyer getting so much play as a replacement coach up there?

If I were you guys, I wouldn't want a guy who has burnout related health reasons for stepping down as my next coach. You don't know how long he'd be there. Not to mention - someone already tried the spread option Florida/WVU style offense in the Big 10.....and it failed, miserably.

And stay the heezy away from Bo! I'll post myself outside his door with knives, sharp sticks, whatever!

Urban Meyer was born a Buckeye and has won multiple national championships. I think that is 90% of his appeal.

His health and ability to stick with it for the long haul is a definitely a concern.

The spread offense... not so much. I don't think Urban Meyer will be as blockheaded about it as Rodriguez was, both in terms of recruiting and tweaking the system to fit his talent (and the weather).

Urban knows how to build a defensive front seven. HUGE ASS DIFFERENCE from RichRod, and also the reason why UM was extremely successful. It wasn't the offense in the NC game against the Buckeyes that destroyed us.

Meyer - for some odd reason, even though he's a good coach, I don't see him having the same kind of 'relationship' with Pryor that he had with Tebow.

Those two had the perfect relationship. Aggressive, confident coach paired with a humble, do-anything to please attitude, physically gifted QB.

Pryor wouldn't be here by then.
