This is the NCAA they write the rules, interpret them, enforce them and set the penalties..unlike Gators legal world..they are judge jury and executioneer.. any punishment is a possibility even changing earlier rulings concerning elligibilty..but thats a ways down the road .

Well, if you believe Ohio State's official position, then Tressel must be a rogue coach. If you don't want to believe that Tressel is a rogue coach, then I guess that you have to be a little bit skeptical of the official story coming out of Columbus.
Agreed, so the question could be re-phrased as whether you're leaning toward the second of those two possibilities - that Tressel did tell OSU staff what was going on and is now "taking one for the team".

On a side note, JT had to know that all communication via a University cell phone or email account was subject to FIA requests.

Dang JT..trac phone? Yahoo?

Sheesh...like Fredo at the fruit stand.
It keeps coming back to this for me. Tressel isn't this stupid. What is the real story?

And just for shits and giggles.....I wonder what the punishment would be had he tried to cover it up way back when, but then copped to it to the NCAA when he signed that paper.

That would certainly explain the enthusiastic support for Tressel from his bosses (even arguably over-the-top support, "I hope he doesn't fire me" -Gee).

Again- there was a change in the compliance office during the summer of 2009, wasn't there? Isn't it possible that Tress got faulty information (yup, this is a stretch- he was an AD at YSU, so more than likely knew the drill).

Although, an email search should have revealed that (unless it was verbal, that is)...

Looking around, finding straws, etc.

What if the real story is just sitting there in the Ohio State self report and no one can say anything more than has been presented. Wouldn't it be something if there were other actors to this play? Non-sports actors. Maybe it isn't crazy that yet another business day has come and gone and the Ohio State board of Trustees, President, and Athletic Director have once again failed to fire Jim Tressel. Maybe tomorrow will come and go with the same outcome. Maybe all of the tomorrows will come and go without firing Jim Tressel for this eminently firable offense. Maybe patience will reward us. I am hoping that it will.

Public Image Hit?

I think you guys are worrying unnecessarily about a public image hit over this. I think it's pretty safe to say that, no matter what, Ohio State is a pillar of college football, always will be, and while this may not look good, it's not going to erase decades and decades and decades of esteem.

I would consider myself a reasonably unbiased outside party at this point, since we haven't played any games yet. I don't get the impression "out there" that sentiment towards OSU is any worse than it was before these allegations came to light. Those who hated OSU still do, but they have more words to say express their dislike. Those who like or are in favor of OSU mostly think that Tressel screwed up, big time, but that his transgression doesn't take away from decades of success.

I'm no fan of Ohio State, but I have always recognized your place in the Pantheon of college football. That place isn't going away because of this. There will be some dirty laundry aired and it will be the talk of the blogs for a while, but it'll go away pretty fast, even if you get the worst penalty the NCAA levies.

Think of USC, and how much they're still esteemed. You guys were, overall, far more liked than the Trojans before Carroll's shenanigans came out.

Hey, HuskerDu, don't come over here spouting logic and presenting a realistic assessment of the situation. The sky is falling and you're raining all over our panic.
