Bottom line: [Mark May] happened that everyone with half a brain understands happens everywhere. Coaches typically construct elaborate self-protection mechanisms so as not to know about it.

see-no-evil.jpg

Chris Cicero screws the pooch by creating a paper trail that documents that Coach Tressel's Veil of Secrecy has been penetrated, as he has now been informed of NCAA violations similar to those that occur everywhere from Auburn to Grand Valley State. But the coach's deniability option has been removed, and oh by the way, the spectre of drug involvement is raised by the feckless Cicero, along with the spectre of FBI involvement. So not only is there the obvious motivation to cover things up so as not to [censored] up the season, there's the additional motivation to cover things up to protect a law-enforcement investigation and the interests of student-athletes who may have drug problems (now refuted, thank God).

WTF. It's not so much that Jim Tressel is being asked to fall on his sword for Ohio State. It's that he's about to be asked to fall on his sword for the entire structure of Big Time College Football, since this shit happens everywhere from Auburn to Grand Valley State.

Sucks, but there it is. With this hue and cry from sports "journalists" increasing in both volume and shrillness, I now don't expect Coach Tressel to be our coach in 2012. And it saddens me greatly.

...so the question is whether you're leaning toward the second of those two possibilities - that Tressel did tell OSU staff what was going on and is now "taking one for the team".

Some thoughts on this notion from a guest poster at the Duane Long Report:

The Mayor said:
...Will Tressel offer himself as a martyr for the program? If those who believe Smith and Gee already knew about everything back in April are correct, then it would appear Tressel already is doing so. That would mean the likes of Jack Nicklaus must believe that Tressel is literally ?taking one for the team?. But then why would someone like Gene Smith, publicly scrutinize Tressel?s apology. We?re talking about a man who is likely protecting Smith. Even more bewildering, why self report that Tressel knew in the first place? Those emails weren?t requested by the NCAA. They were part of an internal investigation. One spearheaded by the University (Gee) and the Athletics Department (Smith). So I have a difficult time believing that Smith or Gee already knew unless the underlying belief is that Smith and/or Gee wanted Tressel out from the beginning...

I'm not endorsing one way or the other, just grist for the mill. The above is a partial quote from http://duanelongreport.com/2011-articles/april/the-mayor.html.

What if the real story is just sitting there in the Ohio State self report and no one can say anything more than has been presented. Wouldn't it be something if there were other actors to this play? Non-sports actors. Maybe it isn't crazy that yet another business day has come and gone and the Ohio State board of Trustees, President, and Athletic Director have once again failed to fire Jim Tressel. Maybe tomorrow will come and go with the same outcome. Maybe all of the tomorrows will come and go without firing Jim Tressel for this eminently firable offense. Maybe patience will reward us. I am hoping that it will.

"You can't handle the truth." LOL!

because so much of what he has done while at OSU was far from expedient or advantageous.

While recruiting, JT has cast a very narrow net and not played the numbers games with recruits. He has done this even in the face of BigTen competitors trying to play that game against him.

While coaching on the field, JT has called off the dogs so many times we can't even count them. OSU could have named their score against half the opponents we've beaten under JT....yet we played keep away most of the time in the 2nd halves of games. He did this even with the knowleget that the media may not forgive him in the rankings the next week.

It's really convenient for critics to forget how much class and dignity Coach Tressel showed in the face of scrutiny and criticism by the media and fans over the years. He always took the high road and never called out others. He's a far better man than I would have been in the same situation.

To say he covere this up just to keep his players eligible goes against a 10 year track record that speaks otherwise.

Coach gets paid to win football games.....they don`t have to win by 50 points for him to get paid....p.s....we love all the wins over michigan and big 10 championships....all the bcs games and wins. He is a winner. Did he cover this up to continue winning?......probably.

His job is to win football games. He is a classy guy.....seems to genuinely care about people....fans, the military and those less fortunate. Go Bucks

I'm also not endorsing or decrying it, but the emails that were discovered in January were reportedly found due to somebody researching a matter related to Big Ten expansion, not anything related to a self-investigation. That's what was said back in early March, but it got little notice.

Didn't know all of a sudden that Cicero is a friend of Tressel's:

Let?s examine what?s happened. And I?ll make it simple. Jim Tressel was made aware of a possible NCAA violation by a friend and did not disclose that information to the proper parties.

Last I heard, JT had said that Cicero was a friend of the program...not a fishing buddy, LOL

That's true, I'd forgotten about that. That mostly eliminates "The Mayor's" objection to that idea - although I'm not sure how it is that Yahoo got their hands on it.

If that did happen - that Tressel reported what he knew when he knew it, someone else swept it under the rug, and now Tressel's taking responsibility for it - then someone would have to really be kicking himself for letting it come to light through a research project on BigTen expansion (or however it might have come to light).
