As has been mentioned, Urban is an Ohio guy, his wife is an Ohio gal. When Urban stepped down, the rumor machine started putting two and two together. It has been long rumored that this was Tressel's last contract and he was going to retire after this contract is up (2014). So the original thought process was Urban sits for a few years and recharges his batteries and is the next Ohio St coach. (Or at least the lead candidate)

But this mess has moved up that timeline. The question is... did it move it up too soon for it to actually happen. (from both sides)
The "never follow a legend" thing has to be weighed. Do you want to follow up the guy who is always BCS bowling and the Big-10 Champ (let alone 9-1 in The Game) ....or be the guy who gets the job two or three years after his successor fails to maintain that level of success, the expectations are lessened, and you can ride in as the savior?

Urban did the second thing at Florida and it worked out well for him.

A) the mob is tired from chasing Herbie all the way to Memphis and...

B) the price of pitchforks and torches have tripled since we ran Herbie off.

Being in an angry mob isn't as easy or cheap as people think.

I don't think that it helped Herbie when he George Costanza'd what Spielman said.

"These pretzels are making me THIRSTY!!!"

It keeps coming back to this for me. Tressel isn't this stupid. What is the real story?

And just for [Mark May]s and giggles.....I wonder what the punishment would be had he tried to cover it up way back when, but then copped to it to the NCAA when he signed that paper.

He wouldn't have a NCAA problem, we could have said we were conducting an internal investigation making sure we knew all the facts before we knew the severity of the player's actions, blah blah blah. However once he signed that notice in September, he was screwed. He dug himself deeper when he didn't disclose it in December either when the players were punished.
