But since you and Mike have been so kind to mention me this morning, I will say that it's a damn shame they "broke" this the morning of your Sweet Sixteen Game. You'd think an Ohio paper could have waited a day.

Call me naive, but I don't think this will in any way affect the bball team tonight. As for public perception outside of OSU fans, I believe this thread is full of opinions indicating that OSU's and JT's reputation was already well tarnished before hearing this morning's news.

Yeah, Tlangs, that's the link I was reading. I was also reading another link that talked about Charlie Batch.

The same Charlie Batch that back in December of this last year, had to file Bankruptcy because he owed a bunch of money. Ouch.

So, basically, by not turning in Pryor for what he did, Coach Tressel may have further let this kid down.

Sad state of affairs. Many coaches are guilty of it, but it's extremely disappointing to see someone held in such high regard in the national community of coaches do it.

I know you are very saddened by this sad state of affairs....but if you could explain Tress's situation and relationship with the party's mentioned and how he let TP down that would be great.

This is all opinion, so take it for what it's worth (if anything) as I'm an outside observer of this all:

I'm understanding that JT was caught in between a rock and a hard place. If he turns Pryor (and the others) in, they could possibly never play football again at OSU. So he decided to probably consult some other folks (more than likely folks that work at the school).

He came to the final conclusion that he was going to keep it quiet.

I'm focusing on these two guys for a reason. They're both leaders. They're both the face of the school for many others that don't get a chance to watch OSU football on Saturday afternoons.

As a leader, it's a lonely road. It's not a popularity contest, or a contest to get folks to like you. I'm sure that Coach Tressel gigged Pryor up personally, no doubt in my mind. But the young man needed to learn that there are serious reprocussions for your actions, and he missed that chance when he decided not to say anything.

The one thing about lies - is they always, eventually, have a way of coming out and blowing up in your face, no matter how noble the cause is.

I had a situation with one of my players that was caught taking things from the concession stands where we used to practice. I liked the kid, one of the best two players I ever coached. Coached his older brother. His dad had just died, and he was the one who found him.

So he and I sat down. I talked to him and had a long talk with him after practice. He told me he had done what he did to take pressure off his mom, who was dealing with all of the stuff going on.

And I was crushed that he wasn't going to be able to play anymore due to what he had done. And I was the one that was going to have to tell his mom.

She came to practice, and we all sat down again and talked. She cried, and my heart fell. But they both understood and accepted the punishment. I went to the board and lobbied on the kid's behalf. They accepted, and reduced his ban to a three game suspension.

That's what I meant by him letting TP down.

I've been a Tressel fan since his days at YSU where I watched his teams play in person several times, but I sincerely think some folks are in denial here.

"I didn't know what to do." - Sorry, that sounds like a lie. He's not stupid.

"I was afraid to disclose the emails because of confidentiality and the investigation." - Sorry, but that sounds like another lie, now.

Added to the compliance statement in September and the lack of disclosure in December it is becoming increasingly difficult to see any other plausible explanation than Tressel/tOSU wanted to keep this violation hidden from the light of day. It looks like the classic case of the attempted cover up being worse than the actual crime. It doesn't matter how silly we think the trinkets-for-tats rule is, it's a rule. He knew it was a violation, if true, and it needed to be investigated ASAP. That either didn't happen, or it did and it was not disclosed to the NCAA. Either way, we're screwed there.

The truly sad part is the punishment for the initial violations would've been the first 4 games of last season for 5 players if everyone had just come clean. It would be water under the bridge by now. Instead, it is 5 games next season, and potentially 12 wins erased last season, and Tressel's/tOSU's reputation at a minimum, his job at a maximum. It may even get to the point where tOSU has to dismiss him, as Tennessee just had to do with Pearl, to avoid major program sanctions.

What a mess. What a shame. :(

As soon as I saw this article I thought, "Fuck."

Its a goddamn nightmare that keeps getting worse. I love coach Tressel, think he is a great man and coach...but how much more can the school take?

Honestly, makes me nauseous. My greatest fear is being realized: things are getting worse and worse, which seems to be leading to a dismissal. And honestly, if things continue to progress this way, it will become a national joke if he is retained. This is sickening.

First - I don't recommend you compare JT to Pearl. I got my head bit off bout that yesterday.

Second - I agree 100% with what you said.

I was reading an article that talks about schools and the level of secondary violations that they report to the NCAA.

I'm not trying to sound self-righteous here or anything. But to me, as a coach, my integrity would have to define me. And that's what I thought about Tressel, even when folks were complaining about him and playcalling a few years ago. He was being true to himself, I felt.

One other thing about some schools than others - some schools have facility members that serve on the NCAA Infractions Committee. We do, and she's feared.

FYI, tOSU AD Gene Smith is a former member of the NCAA Committee on Infractions.

:(

And he would have completely justified the faith that so many have put in him. Even the biggest Ohio State hater would have a hard time condemning a man who came forward with info that resulted in four starters being suspended in a possible NC season.

Do you think maybe that's why Coach Tress may have kept this under his hat as long as he did?

Those Infractions folks are brutal.

I choose not to speculate on that. I'm only posting to show that I'm not ignoring your question.

...and this is why I can sleep at night.

GS is no dummy. He would not have made the punishment if he thought that the NCAA would not accept most of it. It would make him look like an nincompoop.
