XBox 360, PS3 or Wii? ( ESPN on 360 for TWC)

Back everything up to an external HD, that way you don't lose anything.

3 beeps is the PS3's way of indicating an "error", whether it was a bad save or something else. Mine has done that a few times with NBA 2k12 and BF3, but that's it. Do your games act up, warping the image etc? If so, then your GPU is going out. You can buy time by opening it up, cleaning off the old thermal paste and reapplying.

When you turn it on, do you feel air coming from the vents? If not, the fan is broken (known to happen after some time on these "fat" PS3's)

Is your PS3 in the open, or in a cabinet?

I am pretty sure it is just overheating so I just ordered an external cooling unit last week. I do not get any of the graphic wraps you mentioned (which I have read about on other websites) and it usually works for about 20 minutes with a game, then 3 beeps out, or when I am using Netflix it gives about an hour before tapping out. Pretty sure it is just an old unit that is having a hard time cooling while processing at a higher rate than when new because of higher res graphics and such in games today.

It is in open air, never was in a cabinet because it always seemed to run hot from out of the box. The only files I really wanted to save were for Dead Island since I have gone pretty far in the game, but it seems that you can't back up to a USB drive anymore (at least I haven't found where you can do it) since they started that online backup stuff with PS-Plus.

Not too worried about it right now, going to see how this thing works when I get that cooling unit installed. If I have to dump and restore, then so be it. If that doesn't work, I will take it apart again, scrub and redo the heat sinks and see what happens.

So, the cooling unit was on back order and I decide to move forward and try to fix this thing myself again (replaced the laser last year on my own).

Found this video and the procedure works like a charm.

Jeez, I'd be more worried about putting things in the correct place/screws etc
I ended up with three 3/4" screws left over after I thought I had mapped out their locations pretty well. Reading through the video's comments, i wasn't the only one to end up with 3 stragglers. Oh well, the damn thing works now and that is good enough for me.

I recently picked up a 360 after getting rid of mine last year or so, and I wanted to ask a question.

Question: Can you copy the games to the HD and play them without the disk?

I have a 250 GB HD, and I have a LOT of friends that would let me borrow games to put on the drive if I want to play them later.

Have to have the disk in the drive to play it

what mac said, by putting it on HD all it's doing is not reading the disc while playing, but it's gotta be able to read the disc to boot up

This. I got really excited about the installing to HD feature, because I thought the same thing. Although you can't play games without the game being in the console, it is a VERY nice feature to have.

Running games on an Xbox, especially if you play a new game every week or two (ie renting), you could burn out your Xbox in a matter of months because it puts so much strain on your Xbox. Eventually, the thing will start over heating.

I install every game to HD to ensure that I won't start having the over heating issue.

You really should still google it, Mac. He didn't really answer your question.

Not if it's ventilated properly and is a newer model.

I do it for many reasons:

1) It runs much quieter (especially if you have an older model that whirrs loudly)

2) It runs quicker (load times are shorter on FPS maps)

3) It does less damage to the disc (it only spins up at the start to check it), so there will be less wear and tear from regular use.
I was starting to get disc read errors for MW3, it only had 1 scratch, so I borrowed my friends, installed it, bam
Or rent it from a local rental shop.

I disagree. I popped a game in that I thought was installed to hard drive, but it wasn't. Mind you, my Xbox is sitting on a coffee table with nothing around it. This thing gets super hot when the disk is spinning. The new one may have improved on it's ventilation, but I'm still not taking any chances.

My first Xbox lasted 4 months. This was in 2007, which was before they had the option to install games to hard drive. I eventually upgraded to the 120GB Elite (which I wish I never got rid of). And now I have the 250GB slim.
