XBox 360, PS3 or Wii? ( ESPN on 360 for TWC)

So, I am finally breaking down and considering buying a gaming system for the boys. They are 7 and 5. I am looking at the PS3 and XBox primarily, but know the Wii is huge. At this point I am leaning toward the PS3 because of the BlueRay ability.

What are the thoughts of those experienced owners and users out there?

The 360 & PS3 are fairly comparable in titles & performance. There are minor differences but nothing extreme. The big differences are online play (360 is not free, but is very slick and has a great community system) and next-gen DVD playback (edge PS3).

You can get in the door with a 360 for $270ish and add a used hard drive for about $50 online. The PS3 entry price is higher.
At this point I am leaning toward the PS3 because of the BlueRay ability.
Where is the console located? Your tv room? Or their basement/playroom?

Decision 1:
Wii (Creative gameplay with limited titles & last-gen graphics)
or
360/PS3 (next gen but largely similar gameplay, next-gen graphics)

Decision 2 (if not wii):
360
or
PS3

I like my Wii, but I will admit at this point in time, with the titles out, it's best used for a party system, the PS3 seems to have a problem that their major releases are available on the Xbox360, the Ps2 or both, so I haven't yet seen a reason to actually get it. The 360 seems to be the way most gamers are going, it seems to be the "hardcore gamer system" as I have heard it described.

I own a 360 and find it awesome. You can rent movies, TV shows, music videos, etc. online and download movie trailers. Online play is fantastic. Best game selection, and graphics are equal to PS3 at this point (I think the PS3 will have better graphics eventually, but at this point it's a toss up).

The PS3 is a very good system, but it no longer has the best selection of games (the PS2 separated itself from the XBox because of its games, in my opinion). The Blu Ray capability is currently the only reason I'd buy the PS3. I have nothing against it, it just doesn't have enough to offer at this point.

The Wii gets my vote for best family/party system. It's the cheapest, and the games are incredibly fun - no matter how simple they are. The graphics aren't the greatest, but that's not what it's about. If you're getting a system for your kids, I'd recommend the Wii.. It has the best selection of family/child-appropriate games.

It's a tough decision.. each is great in its own ways.

I'd also consider whether you plan on dropping major bucks on BluRay discs. That's where the otherwise enticing BR player angle falls through for me.

This seems to be true, though I'm not as hard-wired into the gaming scene as in college. Back then, a lot more Sony titles gave the inferior PS2 console the edge over the Xbox's superior hardware. It seems as though more and more former Sony exclusives are available for both.

I would recommend going to a friend's house and trying out their (or their kids') 360 for the online functionality. Playing NCAA Football 08 against another human, or team battles in FPS are greatly superior to offline play.

The ability to download demos is outstanding, allows me to skip a number of rentals I might otherwise consider. I wish the movies were a bit cheaper, but $6 for an HD movie (vs $20-30 to buy a bluray disc) is decent. What gets me is the TV show prices, if they were $1 I'd probably buy a couple every so often, but at $3+ a pop, no thanks.

I have both the 360 and Wii, and I'd probably give the nod to the 360 (mainly for the graphics, greater game selection, and XBox Live).

The Wii is close, though. Especially if you enjoy the classic games, such as Mario and Zelda.

BBH, We own all 3 systems, and they are all very good systems. My kids are 8 and 5 (and an infant), and they really enjoy the Wii. Granted, we haven't bought any kids games for the other systems yet, but the Wii seems to have the best game library for their age group.

The BluRay movies play great on the PS3, but are very pricey at this time (we only bought 2 because their was a "buy one get one free" sale). The PS3 does a nice job of upconverting regular DVDs, so they look great too.

If you're leaning more towards the 360 or PS3 systems, then your best price comparison is probably $350 vs $400. If that's the case, then considering the PS3 with the BluRay player for the extra $50 is not a bad deal, since that seems to be of interest to you.

In short, the graphics on the 360 and PS3 are much better than the that of the Wii, and the BluRay capability is a nice touch on the PS3. The thing I like about the Wii, specifically with regards to my kids, is that the controls allow them to do actual movements, and it's not all about being good at mashing buttons. Also, when they play games like boxing, they do a lot of movements and get some pretty good exercise.

In short, if you're looking to get a system for your kids, then the Wii is a great system for them, and it is a fun system for adults as well. If you are looking for a system that plays games with the best graphics, and would like it to double as a multimedia center with HD movie capability out of the box, then the PS3 is the system for you. The 360 should be your option if you have a lot of friends that have 360s or if you don't want to spend the extra money to get the HD movie and wireless Internet connectivity out of the box.

I don't own any of the systems, but if it came down to it, I'd go with the PS3. I've heard of too many problems with the xbox and the red ring of death.

With that age group I would get a Wii. It is geared to a more family environment. I had both 360 and PS3 but gave up on 360 after my second one failed. The gaming difference(360/PS3) is not as big as one makes it out to believe either. The playstation is just now gaining steam and will be a powerhouse in a few years. If you know anybody with the three systems try to test em out.

My suggestion: Get the Wii for the kids and PS3 for yourself.

Edit: Regarding blu-ray. There are alot of deals buy-one/two-get-one that have been going on. Amazon also has good prices or you could even get them used at your local used game or video store. I currently have 18 titles and got 11 of these for free. DVDs had similar prices when they first came out so the prices will drop.

I think the key is to figure out why you are getting the system. If your kids are going to be playing it more than you than the Wii is the system you should go with. They have more "kid" games and my nephew who is 8 loves his Wii games.

Now if you will be using the blue ray more than the kids will be playing than the PS3 is the way to go. But kid games are limited so your kids will probable get less mileage out of it.

The Wii is also good for if you regularly have people over, drinking, or just hanging out. Mario Party 8 seems to be a big hit with friends, as does "Wii Sports" the game that comes with the system. So far, I have had a lot of fun with the system, the graphics are definately very kid friendly, but most of the gameplay can be enjoyed by all ages.

BBH, I've got a Wii and a PS3 and a 7 year old son. My son has never played the PS3 for more than 10 minutes at a stretch with games like Motorstorm and Ratchet & Clank. He doesn't have any interest in it anymore, nor does he even ask about getting out his old PS2 games.

Give him Super Monkey Ball or Mario Galaxy or something and he'll entertain himself for 2 hours.

I think your boys would get more enjoyment out of the Wii, and I think you'll find more opportunities where the entire family can get together and enjoy a game. The PS3 is a good system, but the library still pales compared to the other two platforms in terms of diversity, which IMHO leaves it on the short end in value vs price.
