I was thinking that- even though he has yet to make a name for himself- this guy seems very similar to Orihan Johnson...

Recruiting often goes down to the wire, Flyin' player shows

KETTERING ? Verlon Reed grew up in Columbus loving Ohio State, and particularly its football team.
As he progressed through a senior season at Marion-Franklin High School during which he would pass for 1,548 yards and rush for 1,395 more, Reed kept getting sniffs from the OSU staff in recruiting. They were gaining continual updates, but they weren?t offering that coveted scholarship.
In December, it all happened quickly.
?They were there the whole time, but it was a late (offer),? Reed said after helping his team to an 83-75 defeat of Atlanta-area Centennial at the Flyin? to the Hoop boys basketball event Saturday, Jan. 16, at Trent Arena. ?It was mainly Toledo and Bowling Green, and then when I got the offer from Ohio State, that?s when the other schools like Michigan and Michigan State came in.?
Reed, a 6-foot-3, 185-pounder who made his commitment to Ohio State, was hot, and all because the Buckeyes wanted him. That?s common in recruiting, as schools will wait, watching for others to make their move.
Many of these talented players at the Flyin? to the Hoop will experience similar paths, either in basketball or football. The recruiting game is becoming more difficult, especially when quick coaching changes are made.
?It?s tough, but that?s a business also, money being what it is,? Reed said. ?Like Cincinnati.?
Verlon Reed signs with Ohio State to take a shot at playing QB: Video

Columbus Marion-Franklin senior Verlon Reed was one of the later pledges to what is currently an 18-player Ohio State recruiting class for 2010. His official offer from the Buckeyes came after his senior season, and he gave his oral commitment on Dec. 16 before signing his National Letter of Intent today.
Reed was primarily holding offers from MAC schools before his senior season, but Michigan State and Michigan both offered him as a quarterback after the Buckeyes gave him an offer. A lifelong OSU fan who wore an Ohio State sash and tie today, Reed is coming to Ohio State only because he was told he'll have a shot to play quarterback, joining quarterback Taylor Graham in this class behind starter Terrelle Pryor and backups Joe Bauserman and Kenny Guiton.
He wore No. 10 in high school because it was the number of former Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith and Reed only hopes he can stick at quarterback the way Smith did after coming to Ohio State as a player who had a chance to play several positions.
According to the average rankings of three major recruiting services, Reed, ranked as a three-star recruit by two of them and a two-star recruit by the other, is the lowest-rated recruit in this OSU class, along with kicker Drew Basil. The Buckeyes have a history of success with under-the-radar recruits.
Reed's high school held a signing ceremony for him this morning and then he spoke with the Plain Dealer.

Troy Smith's story inspires Marion-Franklin's Verlon Reed in his quest to play quarterback at OSU.

Reed's position unclear
Newly signed Verlon Reed from Marion-Franklin may or may not end up at quarterback, Tressel said.
Reed said he chose Ohio State after Tressel promised him he would get a shot at quarterback. He also can play defensive back or receiver.
"Who knows what he'll end up playing?" Tressel said. "When we stood here in February 2002, we had no idea what Troy Smith would do."

Verlon Reed of Marion-Franklin, the first City Leaguer to sign with OSU in six years, plans to be a positive influence in his hometown.
More football
The kids at Hilliard Weaver Middle School listened politely as a half-dozen of the area's top high school sports stars spoke to them recently.
The athletes are a part of the Stand and Deliver program, organized by former Grandview athletic director Larry Larson.
But though the kids were being offered advice by star swimmers, golfers and tennis players, it was only the final speaker who fully captured their attention.
Verlon Reed, quarterback and defensive back at Marion-Franklin, talked about the importance of being a leader. When he was finished, he was swamped with autograph requests.
Reed has signed to play for Ohio State, and in this town, that makes him an instant A-list celebrity.
"Because he's going to be a Buckeye, the students are in awe of him," Larson said.
