WR Verlon Reed (transfer to Findlay)

High school football: Reed MVP in South victory
Marion-Franklin QB gets plenty of help in all-star game

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The sparse crowd of a few thousand in Ohio Stadium last night for the North-South All-Star Classic will go home remembering the spectacular offensive plays the South made in a 23-20 victory.

Proof of that came when Ohio State-bound quarterback Verlon Reed was awarded the MVP trophy, even though the Marion-Franklin product said he didn't play up to his standards.

ON VERLON REED...

As for Reed, I did not think he played all that great outside of the one run, and even he was surprised to get the MVP award. He did not look good as a passer, missing his first five attempts and not completing his first pass until the third quarter. He was intercepted in the first half on a ball that was thrown behind his receiver, and after the game he said he felt he had an off night throwing the ball.

The run itself was a thing of beauty, however. He should have been tackled two or three times but run through one tackle and made a couple guys miss with nice jukes. The main thing that impressed me on the run was the speed. With kids like that you wonder how they would look against better competition, and on that play he looked like the fastest player in the game.

Verlon Reed, QB/Ath Marion-Franklin (Ohio State)

Reed again showed himself to be a terrific athlete, spinning out of many a grasp at quarterback, but is still lacking enough awareness and accuracy to show that he can be a quarterback at Ohio State. He ducked and dodged about three pursuers on one play, but ended up fumbling the ball when he got hit as he was spinning away from another would-be tackler. He finished the game 7-11 passing for 55 yards, and rushed for 60 yards.

His biggest play came on a 74-yard touchdown run on a simple zone read. His speed was clearly evident as he raced the entire Pennsylvania defense into the endzone?and stretched his lead.

?I couldn't do it without the other ten guys and everybody blocking,? said Reed, talking about his touchdown run. ?I cut outside and saw my receiver had his man on skates going to the inside, so I just cut out and off to the races. It was great.?

Fortunately for Reed, his versatility will allow him ample opportunity to find the field in other ways if he never makes it at quarterback. He started the game at wide receiver for Ohio, and didn't look out of place. He also played some cornerback but did get beat badly on an overthrown out and up. He did everything his team asked of him, and he did it because he knew that's what it would take to secure the victory.

?You don't want to lose, but at the same time it's an all-star game, so you want to have fun while you're doing it,? he explained. ?But at the end of the day, we know how storied this rivalry is, so we wanted the victory very badly.?

Reed's future may ultimately be on the defensive side of the ball, but he has enough skill that you would like to see what he could do on offense before shipping him off. Perhaps most importantly, he is going to work for every opportunity that he is given.

I would love to see him on offense at OSU, even though he's projected as a DB. He's got explosion and gets down field.

He's been told he will get a shot at QB, so I expect him to get to do that tomorrow at practice. I'd like to see him at receiver or safety if QB doesn't work out.

Reed wins another MVP award (Blogging the Buckeyes)

Reed wins another MVP award

The big news day yesterday pushed this a bit off the front-burner, but it's worth reporting that OSU freshman Verlon Reed, from Columbus Marion-Franklin, won MVP honors in Saturday night's Big 33 Football Classic in Hershey, Pa.

Reed, a quarterback, scored on a 74-yard draw as Ohio beat Pennsylvania, 18-15. Reed also threw for 54 yards.

In April, Reed also claimed MVP honors in the Ohio North-South Classic, despite completing just 1 of 7 passes for 10 yards. He scored on a 37-yard run.

Reed was recruited to OSU as an all-around athlete, but told he would be given a chance to compete at quarterback.

Also Saturday, OSU freshman Christian Bryant, from Cleveland Glenville, scored the winning TD on a 17-yard pass reception with 1:40 remaining.

I've been reading that he's now listed as a WR. Seems like a better decision, he looks like a tremendous athlete but a mediocre QB. Hopefully he can see the field earlier at WR with Duron leaving, and Dane and TWash graduating after this season

Ohio State football notebook: Marion-Franklin's Reed gets Tressel's attention
Saturday, April 23, 2011
By Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Jim Tressel tossed out a tidbit before leaving the Ohio State coaches clinic session yesterday in the Schottenstein Center. Asked to name someone who has caught his eye this spring, he provided a tease for today's scrimmage in Ohio Stadium.

"A dark horse? Let me throw Verlon Reed," Tressel said. "See you later."

Fans might get to see more of Reed today. The Buckeyes are replacing seven starters on defense and seven on offense - if you count the four offensive players, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who will be suspended the first five games of the season.

That's where Reed comes into the picture. In the four times the media have been able to watch practices or scrimmages, no receiver other than DeVier Posey - one of the suspended players - has stood out. But Reed, a former quarterback from Marion-Franklin who was signed as an athlete and redshirted last season, has had his moments.

Redshirt freshman Verlon Reed impressed on Saturday, most notably with this touchdown grab in front of defender Vincent Petrella in the Buckeyes' final spring scrimmage.

Receiver Verlon Reed: Called a dark horse of the spring by Jim Tressel, the redshirt freshman and converted high-school quarterback caught a touchdown pass Saturday and later wrote on Twitter it was the best day of his life. He is certainly in the mix to be the No. 2 or No.3 receiver when DeVier Posey is out.

"Nobody knew much about him, but he's getting noticed now this spring," center Mike Brewster said. "I think he stepped up and made a name for himself."
