WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Milwood, I think you're about right on with the 185-190 pound range. TGII came here as basically a "skinny kid" and I think his adult growth will put him in that area. I seriously doubt that the increased weight will cost him a bit of speed. Alot of world class sprinters have incredibly well-defined chests, biceps, and thighs. I don't see his body type ever getting "thick" enough to lose any speed. But, WTF. Even if he does lose some, who the hell is gonna catch him?

Dubs, you're right on about his body frame. Many sprinters are thicker because they either have a normal or bigger sized frame and can build the muscle proportionately. Ginn has a naturally thinner frame, and won't fit as much extra muscle mass without eventually sacrificing some speed. He already has thick thighs and decent sized calves for his build. He really shouldn't get a whole lot bigger...

I disagree a bit with what was said earlier. First, in terms of punts, I do agree in that I do think teams will try and punt away from him, but when he gets his hands on them and gets a seam, no one can catch him, because it wasn't even close when that happened last year. Thus, I don't think he'll get as many returns, or yards, but I still think he can bring 3-5 back for the score over the course of 11 games, and his impact on field position will still be consistently felt even if he doesn't get his hands on it as much. So, I think he can score as many (roughly) and still have as big an impact, if not the yards.

As for adding plays specifically for him, I'm sure I'm in the significant minority, but I hope they don't do this much, but incorporate him more in the base offense. It seems that in a lot of cases, if teams come out thinking they "have to get the ball to player A no matter what" that they press it too much, and end up getting out of what they're trying to do schematically. So, tossing in the occasional end-around or direct snap for him is great, but I'd rather see him as the go-to guy in the slot or even split wide on more plays so that he can naturally work into the offense with all of our other weapons, forcing the defense to consistently respect his presence and freeing up our other guys in the flow of the offense. Just my opinion.

Bucklion brought up a good point about a Ginn end-around. Remember early in The Game where they faked the end-around to him and gave to ball to Joe (or Hall) for a yard loss? On the replay it showed that there was but one defender out on the wide side of the field where Ginn was heading. Granted, Holmes had fallen down as the blocker and the defender was still standing, but there's no doubt that Ginn would've either blown by him or put a move on him and was gone. I was really surprised that Tressel never went back to that play at least once after...

He might have been planning to but once we are winning, we were ahead for the remainder of the season (Game and OkSt).

Do you think we'll ever see a Ginn like the freshman Ginn? The kid that no team knew about until he was dancing in the endzone cuz of a punt return?

Now that teams know what's coming, they'll punt away and double team him and press him hard at the LOS knowing that he has breakaway speed... So will we still have Ginn plays?

Plus I heard he's bulking up a little. And even just a little can mean a lot in terms of loss in speed [flydell].

So was freshman year a flash in the pan, or is this kid going to shock us AGAIN?

Boy I love the offseason.
I wonder about pressing him at the LOS. If the DB isn't successful Ginn will certainly get seperation on a fly or post. Maybe the DB will expect Safety help but that just means more opportunties for Holmes and Co. And if I recall correctly, the Safety help during the Mich St game was futile:biggrin: .

good lord i hope teams plan their whole scheme around him, because if they do that means that Holmes,Smith,Gonzo,Pittman,Haw,Wells etc will have monster seasons along with Ginn because you cant stop him only hope to contain him
Great point... this year i think that other guys on this team are willing to step up, which will make it impossible for an opposing team's gameplan to center around ginn. I would be worried a little bit if we had no other weapons on offense, but troy smith is a dangerous weapon if not checked along with santonio holmes who is a very good receiver too. Add a few RB's who are out to prove something (I have a feeling one of them will break out) and you have a very dangerous offense that is pretty well balanced with alot of different options. The way I see it the opposing coach has two options.

  1. Plan around ginn... you might keep him in check, but the rest of our offense will smoke you
  2. Plan for the whole team... Ginn is a timebomb waiting to explode, good luck containing him

teams essentially have 2 options. kicking it out of bounds spotting us excellent field position or kicking it to ginn/holmes. there aren't that many kickers period who can kick a 40+ yrd punt with proper hang time and precisely place it on a particular hash. even if you do, defensively speaking kicking to holmes isn't exactly a gimme. he's proven he can take em to the house to.

if our offense makes them pay for kicking it out of bounds teams will stop doing so and will put the game on the shoulders of their special teams unit. ill bet the okiest special teams coach was kicking himself in the ass after the alamo bowl. how many times did they spot us excellent field position early in the game? how many of our punt returns amounted to anything?

while that didn't make or break the game imo, it most certainly didn't help. but the question of whether or not teams kick to ginn/holmes will be answered by our offense, not our punt return team. don't matter how many ginn runs back.

Ginn certainly will not see as many punts this year, I'd bet on it. I think this certainly will help us in the world of Tressel ball, which radiates around field position. There will certainly be some explosion out of Ginn, in the mold of slot screens and end arounds.....ect. You will also see them try to stretch the field with Ginn, and use him as a decoy. I think that Holmes will erupt this year because of all the focus on Ginn early on. That being said, I'm having a hard time seeing anyone stop our offense if our line plays the way they ended last season, and if our QB's are consistent.

Can't wait until September!!! Could be the biggest month in OSU football in a long time. Iowa and Texas!!!!!!!!

Ginn!

I think Ginn is going to have a great year again...Even with teams kicking away "most" of the time he will still prob. get 4-5 td returns...The guy has great skills and scares me to death...Hopefully none of those returns come on September 10th...

I read in an article a while back about Ginn bulking up and only wanting to put on between 6-8 lbs. due to the speed factor. I don't know if this answers a lot, but I do know that he doesn't want to add a lot of weight at all. 170 or 180, he won't lose a step.
