WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Not to hijack the thread, but I've met Holmes and I can't see him being the kind of guy who would get upset by another star's shining on the team. The year started off as a huge season for Holmes then settled down really fast, but I can't see him not wanting Ted to have a huge career as a Buckeye.

Holmes is a big time team player. He makes other guys get up with him at 6 a.m. when the team isn't practicing so they can work out with him. He takes young kids under his wings every year to nurture them into the system.

That being said, I think Ginn returns kicks this year. I think if he doesn't, that's stupid on our behalf considering he's the most dangerous special teams player in the nation. Without Nuge this upcoming season, we're going to fight for every extra yard of field position we can get. I think we'll see Teddie back there returning kicks with Tonio. Gives other teams something else to waste time on when it comes to game planning.

Ginn should be returning kickoffs in addition to punts. He took one back for a TD in the Army AA game and almost returned another. And that was against the best HS players in the country...in fact, the opposing team's special teams unit was probably as good or better talent-wise as many college teams' units.
I think TGII is going to be great at any position he plays, but I would really prefer he not do KR's. KR's tend to be quite a bit more violent than punts, running plays, and passes. As it is, I think our offense is going to look to him a lot next year. One injury, and we will lose a lot of production. I believe we have the depth to allow some others to get some touches. Its a great place for the 3rd team RB to get some game time, which is really what was happening for Mo.

Michigan has had Steve Breaston returning kickoffs for at least the last two years, and I think he hurt his thumb on a play other than a kickoff return. Punt returns are even more risky than kickoff returns in that you can get detonated by some running at full speed right when yo catch the ball, whereas during a kickoff return you get the ball well in advance of any tacklers. Ginn has great vision and should be able to avoid a big hit even moreso on a kickoff return than on a punt return.

DOn't you mean "meaningless" unless we lose them?

Okay... if we're up 35-0, then yeah.. let donny return kicks.. I don't care... this is D-I... all the games count.

BuckeyeBill, ya beat me to it! I'm cautious to use TG2 on kick returns. He never took a huge slobberknocker of a hit at any point in the season last year, but if he returns kicks, he is sure to get rocked at least once. People are going to be out to head-hunt him, running full speed when he gets the ball on kicks too. Not to knock Breaston, but if TG2 gets hurt, the Buckeyes lose a bigger threat than when Scum loses Breaston due to injury... especially if Ginn ends up playing nickle back this year on top of everything else.

I would like to see Holmes and Gonzo back deep. Gonzo has great hands and great speed, but won't hit those holes the same way that Ginn does it. We also have other good return guys like Shaun Lane, JamO, or even maybe someone like Erik Haw.

Not saying I'm completely opposed to Ginn returning kicks, because everyone in the nation knows how big of a game changer he can be and how good he is at returning punts. I just don't want to see the kid get injured... and in the end, it's up to Teddy and Tress whether he adds KR to his list of duties or not. Should be interesting to see if he's returning them during spring ball.

What job is more hazardous, kick off returner or punt returner? I think kick off returner only because the rules seem to protect the punt returner better. But, TG is such a special player where do you draw the line in playing him or not?

Good point about Breaston. But for this last year, Edwards was their main go-to guy. It will be interesting to see if Breaston does the kick returns next year.

About punts being more dangersous, you may be right with the "gunner" coming downfield full tilt, and the return guy is pretty exposed. On the other hand, with the kickoff you've got a whole buch of really big guys coming down fast, while on punts, those guys are a ways behind. The other thing is that on kicks, its pretty easy for your own returner to get caught up in the wedge where bodies are flying fast and furious, a good enough place to get injured by one of your own.

Either way, TGII's got a lot to carry on his shoulders. I'm hoping we see a whole lot of other Buckeyes carrying their fair share. Besides, thats the way we'll discover other hidden talents waiting to break out on this team.

What rules? There is no more "halo rule". If the gunner times it right, the punt returner gets annihilated. You never see that on kick returns.

On kickoffs, those "really big guys coming down fast" get jammed up about 10-20 yards from the point of the kick and have to re-accelerate back up to speed. By that time, the kick returner has the ball and is already making his return. Since he has all that time to survey the field, he doesn't get blasted as often as punt returners do...punter returners get drilled far more often than do kick returners. As for wedges on kickoffs, you see similar wedges on punts...check out Ginn's punt TD in The Game where he got jammed up in the middle, and went the other way to break free from the pack.

Yes he will be returning Kickoffs this year. I have always felt that he would be the most affective person in the country at kickoffs. His speed and vision would give us such GREAT field position each time they kicked off to us. I hate to make a comparison with this guy because teddy ginn is much better but look at how Breaston controlled field position for Scum during the Rosebowl. He returned it to the 40 about every time. Even though they lost b/c they choked. That is a good example why Ginn should be returning kicks. He looked very impressive during kickoff returns when he played in the Army all american bowl. It is Ted Ginn for heavens sake the kid is a phenom. Give him the ball as much as possible. :oh: :io: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu: :osu:

I don't have any, but some of these guys can dig all kinds of stuff up. It's really quite amazing.

That being said, this might be better in the images football forum. You might get more replies, since people will be there for this general reason.
