What good is a lockdown corner, when you force them to play soft zone all the time. I also believe that Ginn should stay on offense, unless there is a philosophy change made for the defensive secondary. More tight man to man would be nice to see. Maybe we just don't have the corners to do that right now, past Youboty, and possibly Ginn.

Remembering Gamble's final season is instructive in this debate. When he was taken off offense to play defense almost exclusively, his ability to help the team fell off tremendously. When you have an athlete with skills in the elite stratosphere, like Ginn and Gamble, you should put them in a position to touch the ball frequently -- so they can score.

True shut-down corners are valuable, of course, (although I'm not sure Ginn qualifies as one), but gamebreakers who can score on any given touch are much more valuable. Ginn should not have his talent and strength diluted by playing defense and offense simultaneously. He should stay on offense, where his speed and unbelievable game sense and vision can win him a Heisman or two.

i find myself very curious here... why should i be convinced ginn is a lock down corner? no i do not doubt his talent in anyway. but it takes alot more than talent to be a true lock down corner. has anyone here seen him play against holmes in practice or something? or is this just coming from what we have seen of him on special teams and offense?

if you put him on d he can no longer be the go to guy on offense. he can still play on offense. but he can't play ever single snap. so the real question is, "where do we think he will be the most effective?". with yobouty coming on strong and the fact we have 3/4 returning starters at db. i find it hard to believe tressel won't be willing to take a chance with a young guy who hasn't proved themself. don't get me wrong, id like to see ginn at cb as well. hell, i wanna know why krenzles ass isn't cloning him and nugent as i type this to be perfectly honest. but that doesn't mean ginn playing d is what is best for the team. right now we need offense in a big way. next year may be different... this decision is going to be less of what ginn is capable of and more of "what the young guys are capable of".

Tressel is GREAT at putting guys where they are going to be most effective. I think he is one of the most talented coachs when it comes to noticing talent. I think any speculation on this is kind of foolish because nobody knows what is going on in practice.

It will be interesting to watch Teddy play. We know this. He's fast with the ball...it doesn't slow him down at all. He has great agility, balance, vision, and speed. I think with him, Holmes, and Gonzo we are going to have the best recievers in the Big 10 next year. Ginn is probably ended up being the #2 freshman in the country last year...with Peterson being #1.

Good point, but your coverage is also dependent on your talent. How long since we have had two 'lock downs' back there? Gamble's move to the secondary was driven by team need more than personal desire.

With the kids we have now and some experience they will have next year - who knows?

you guys are forgetting that he was the usa today DEFENSIVE player of the year.


teddy will be our starting WR alongside holmes.

he will also start at CB and shut down everybody he goes up against.

he will also return punts and kickoffs.

when he gets tired (which won't be that often) he'll come off the field for a few plays.

Against Michigan, we were fucking phenomenal on offense. We can't expect that to happen every game next year. There are going to be times when for whatever reason we will be struggling to score pts. Our defense needs to be much, much, MUCH better next year if we are to have any shot WHATSOEVER of winning the national title. People are so enamored by teddy's playmaking ability that they fail to realize just how important defense is.

Having teddy at CB will be HUGE for our defense. HUGE. it will make things so much easier for the defensive coordinator. He knows that he can leave teddy out on an island against the other teams' best guy. Now, this frees up everything else. We can roll our coverage to the other side. We can double down on any other receiver that is giving us problems. We can blitz with more confidence. We can put the safety in the box.

People are saying that ginn isn't a lockdown corner, just because he didn't play D this year. That's insane. We need to realize that he wasn't here in the spring. He had to come in and quickly learn how to play at this level. The coaches were more concerned about teaching him the offensive playbook, how to run the proper route, how to catch the ball (remember, he doesn't exactly have glove-like michael jenkins hands) and how not to fumble. Simply put, he had way too much to learn on offense for us to worry about getting him reps on defense. Plus, his tackling probably still needs a lot of work, and the coaches probably didn't want to put a skinny freshman out there. He needs a year to improve on his tackling.

Watching him run around, it should be clear to EVERYBODY that he has the potential to be a lockdown corner. His speed, agility, and acceleration are all off the charts. He also is over 6 ft tall I believe.

Everyone is being conservative. They seem to think that if he goes both ways, his play on either side of the ball will suffer. I don't believe that this will happen. I believe him to be Superman. I watched him run track for 3 yrs. The coaches need to challenge him by making him play both ways, and believe me, he will RISE to the challenge. This is what he wants to do. He wants to go both ways. We need to release the leash and turn him loose. He will win the Heisman in 2005, culminating his campaign by striking the pose in the end zone in the Big House. Revenge is a dish best served cold, especially when it's been sitting on the table for 14 years.

I am in the camp that thinks TG2 will play CB next year. I also think that we will use him as a WR on third downs and that he will also return kick offs, as well as punts. To me, this is the best use of his talents and best meets the needs of the team.

I think we have more talent and depth at WR than we do CB. Holmes, Gonzo, Hall, Lyons, Jordan, Dukes. All these guys can play.

If we can have Youboty and TG2 at each corner this will allow our D the ability to play man to man coverage. A defensive backfield with Ginn, Youboty, Salley and Whitner will be leathal. And as we all know, great defense usually means good field position for the Offense. Also, as another poster pointed out, if TG2 gets a pick, it's off to the races.

Guys, I'm not saying that he should play defense exclusively but for christ sakes the kid scores a TD every 4 times he touches the ball. With the speed he has and the soft zone that we play, Ginn could intercept a lot of passes. I like the idea of putting him in in certain situations and keeping him at WR,PR but like someone mentioned earlier, Ginn was the defensive player of the year coming out of HS last year and there is no one in pads faster than he is. Combine that with his ability to stop on a dime and accelerate faster than a Mclaren F1, when he does intercept a pass you'd better bet that it's a 90% chance of turning into 6 points against an offence that doesn't tackle that often.

I don't think his dad would criticize Tressel constructively for not pushing him physically if Ginn would lose some of his touch playing both ways. The kid did it thru high school and was ridiculously good at hopping from event to event in track with no dropoff.

I trust Tressel to do the right thing. We have tons of skill next year at DB, but most of that skill seems to be at safety (Whitner, Salley, Everett, Mitchell, ONeal, other recruits).

This year Ginn has to play offense because we cannot grind out long drives (I'm still holding to this until they repeat saturday's performance again). If we are able to sustain drives with a top RB, it becomes less essential for TGII to be out there every play. While Gonzo doesn't make opponents hold their breath the minute he touches the ball, he clearly has shown some electrifying speed and will stretch defenses to set up the run.
