Ginn criticized for evasiveness

DAVIE ? Next time, Dolphins wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. said, he won't duck out of bounds.
Not after Sunday.
Twice, Ginn went out of bounds shy of first downs on critical pass plays.
"My teammates got on me after that," Ginn said Wednesday.
So did his father, who coached Ginn in high school. When Ginn returned home after Miami's 17-10 win against San Diego, his father called.
"He gave me the whole nine yards about what I should have done," Ginn said. "That helps. I'm that much more aware of what to do and what not to do."
On a key third down in the third quarter, Ginn caught a pass but ran out of bounds 3 yards shy of a first down. On the next play, rookie Dan Carpenter missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt.

Ginn gets an earful for stepping out

DAVIE ? Ted Ginn Jr. didn't need to turn on sports talk radio to hear critics nail him for running out of bounds twice against the San Diego Chargers with the Miami Dolphins trying to run out the clock on their second straight victory.
Ginn got an earful from his father, Ted Sr., a high school coach, as he stepped inside his home following the game.
"When he saw me go out of bounds, he made sure he talked to me about my awareness," said Ginn, who tied a career high, catching seven passes for 55 yards against the Chargers.
"It's always good to get the same feedback from everyone," said Ginn, who caught heat from coach Tony Sparano for the plays. "The coaches didn't tell me anything different than what my pops said."
Ginn would also like his old job back, that of primary returner. He is still not sure why he's not getting more opportunities to return kickoffs and punts, which happened to be his specialty at Ohio State.
In his rookie season, Ginn averaged 22.7 yards on kick returns and 9.6 on punt returns (which included a touchdown), sixth-best in the NFL.
Sparano said he replaced Ginn with rookie receiver Davone Bess because of Bess' tendency to make the first defender miss. Bess is averaging 11.2 yards on five punt returns and 19.8 on kickoffs.
"I luckily got out there last week. I enjoyed it and hope I can see more. But I'm just going with what my role is," said Ginn, who returned one punt 11 yards against San Diego but bobbled the catch.

I really don't understand what's going on. He received great reviews over the offseason. He's not even involved in the return game anymore even after all of last year's td's and that pr td against KC in the preseason. Hope he hasn't given up on himself.

So?

the NFL is filled with players who got "great reviews" in the off-season. It doesn't mean anything.

He was a raw draft pick. if the best thing you can say about a college receiver is "speed", that doesn't cut it in the NFL. Hands, toughness, route running, blocking are all more important. He can still it around this season and next.

Yeah, I don't understand why he doesn't return punts or kickoffs anymore. Any 'Phins fans know?
He has been struggling to get going and goes down after first contact very easily and they want him to focus on receiving since he is their number one receiver. He struggled at receiving while also returning kicks.

as a receiver or returner?

That's not Ted's fault. Obviously he has some hand in this, but if they had not dumped Welker, Chambers & Booker (all successful since their departure), the learning curve would be a lot more forgiving.

He seems to be struggling at receiving period. Maybe they should let him do the one thing he is great at. 4 returned TDs, flags or not, is nothing to sneeze at.

Not a Phins fan but I've said it before.....the day they brought Chad Pennington in to be QB, Teddy lost his biggest advantage (speed). CB's don't respect Chad's arm so they sit on all of the underneath routes. Teddy gets open underneath when DB's respect the deep ball.

Imagine Steve Smith playing with Chad Pennington...it'd be close to the same thing. Smaller, quicker wideouts need QB's with at least average arms...Chad is far below average in arm strength.

Teddy looked good in pre-season because Henne and Beck can go both chuck it deep. Not saying Henne or Beck are better than Pennington, just that DB's have to respect a 40+ yard throw.

That is the question right now that is all over message boards. It is obvious he is our best returner because they put him in at KR when Houston kicked off after scoring the game winning TD. And seeing has he is really struggling at receiver I don't get why they don't put him at receiver either. The only thing he has done wrong returning punts is let the ball bounce when he at least needs to fair catch it. It is clear Bess does not have the ability that Ginn does as a returner so I don't get it. But then again this is the team that basically has benched Ernest Wilford after paying him 13 mil over four years and a 6 million dollar bonus.
