WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Rex Report: Santonio isn't perfect
July, 28, 2012
By Jane McManus | ESPNNewYork.com

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Apparently, Rex Ryan is aware that Santonio Holmes gets mixed reviews from outside the Jets organization, and in answering another question, made a candid remark about his wide receiver.

?As much as everybody dislikes him, I?m glad he?s on our team,? Ryan said.

Asked to explain what he meant, Ryan just didn?t offer the usual platitudes about turning the page.

?Is he perfect? No,? Ryan said. ?None of us, there?s not one person in our locker room that?s perfect. Let things go behind us. Let?s judge him for how he is right now. We had a poor year there?s no doubt, Tone, myself Mark (Sanchez) all of us. We want to have a better year this year and we?re determined to do so.?

As for Sanchez, Ryan was impressed by how long he stood outside in a T-shirt almost as much as he was impressed by the way Sanchez threw in a downpour.

?Especially that you?re in the northeast, you have to be able to throw the football in bad conditions. I?ve been with some quarterbacks that, when the weather was bad, for whatever reason they just struggle. You see the way Sanchez really zipped the ball today, you see the confidence he has. It makes no difference, wet football, wind, when you can spin the ball the way he can it really made no difference. (I?m) impressed with the way he threw the ball today in those kinds of conditions.?

Santonio Holmes calls himself the 'scapegoat' for meltdown in Miami last season

BY Manish Mehta

CORTLAND ? Seven months after Santonio Holmes? meltdown in the season finale that resulted in his benching, the Jets? mercurial wide receiver believes that he was the ?scapegoat? for the team?s troubles in Miami. Holmes finished without a catch in the loss.

?It was playoffs on the line and your best receiver doesn?t get but two passes thrown his way in 60 minutes of football,? Holmes said on ESPN 1050 radio on Monday after practice. ?That?s just hard to understand when you want everything just as bad as everybody else does and it just doesn?t happen. And nobody has the answers for it?. but the scapegoat is answer. And that?s what happened.?

However, Holmes, the face of the locker room dissension that derailed last season, said earlier in the interview that he was at the heart of the problem for being frank to the media when asked about the team?s struggles at various points during the season. Holmes publically criticized the offensive line twice during the season. On Monday, he said that he wished he hadn?t ?answer(ed) those questions in that manner.?

Holmes maintained that he needed to ?(learn) how to hold my tongue and be more critical of myself instead of others.?

Holmes also offered a disjointed explanation about the media?s role in the team?s troubles last season.

?As hungry as I was when I wanted it back as a rookie in ?06,? Holmes said, ?I felt that same desire when I got traded here to New York. I wanted the same thing that I had in Pittsburgh from this team. I didn?t mean to overly aggressively go and attack? the guys that (are) respect(ed). What we had in Pittsburgh was a net family, guys who stuck together, who believed in one other. No matter what was said in the media, it never affected nobody in our locker room. No matter who said what. But coming here? now understanding how the New York media works? and the players in the locker room not believing or understanding that it can only drive these guys to be successful or it can break you. And we were caught in the crossfire.?

Santonio Holmes listed as day-to-day after X-Rays on ribs are negative
BY Manish Mehta

CORTLAND ? The Jets survived a scare on Saturday night when Santonio Holmes left the team?s hour-long intrasquad scrimmage with a rib injury. Rex Ryan initially believed that he had lost the explosive playmaking wide receiver to a broken rib, but X-rays were negative. Holmes is day-to-day, the team said.

?I don?t know if Santonio did break a rib or not, but the fact it was sticking out? is probably an indicator,? Ryan said right after the scrimmage. ?But again, I?m sure he?ll be fine. We?ll have to check on him later. Other than that, he had a good day.?

Holmes was injured after getting drilled by Antonio Cromartie on a seven-yard completion from Mark Sanchez during the first-team?s lone touchdown drive. Cromartie made a clean tackle short of the first down marker.

?He?s a tough guy,? Ryan said of Holmes. ?But I don?t think he?s going to be running out there tomorrow or the next day. But we?ll have to see.?

Santonio morphs into a mentor

Santonio Holmes AP

With all the chatter regarding Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez, it?s easy to forget that the player who could do the most harm to the Jets this year is Santonio Holmes.

Chronically unhappy with his role last season, Holmes became more and more of a problem as the season unfolded, culminating in Week 17 ugliness that echoed into the offseason. And that happened at a time when the Jets threw more than they had planned; this year, with the Jets re-embracing the ?ground and pound? approach, Holmes could have the ball in his hands even less frequently.

The new season didn?t start well. Holmes said that a two-quarterback system won?t work, prompting coach Rex Ryan to remind Holmes that he hasn?t been hired to serve as the team?s offensive coordinator.

But things have improved. As Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News explains it, Holmes recently has assumed a leadership role.

?Being a mentor to these young guys that we have in our receiving corps has been fun for me,? Holmes said. ?I want these young guys to know that in order to be the best, these are the things that you have to work on.?

Santonio Holmes to play in Sunday's preseason game against Carolina
BY Seth Walder

Mark Sanchez will get his top offensive weapon back on Sunday night. Santonio Holmes, who missed the first two preseason games with a rib-cartilage injury, will play against the Panthers, Rex Ryan said on Friday.

Ryan reiterated that he?s ?going to be real cautious? with Holmes and fellow wideout Jeremy Kerley, who?s expected get his first preseason action as well after dealing with a partial hamstring tear for the past month.

Holmes practiced in 11-on-11 drills in a red non-contact jersey this week. Kerley looked good all week and said that he was ?90-95 percent? healthy.

Holmes also has dealt with back and hamstring issues this preseason.

?It looks like Holmes is going to play,? said Ryan.

Ryan said that Holmes may play 10-12 snaps.

?We need those guys,? said Ryan, referring to both wideouts.

?Hopefully, Santonio will be on the field," Sancehz said on Thursday. "We?re all pushing for him play. And he?s a competitor. He?ll do the right thing and get out there (when he?s ready).?

Santonio Holmes falls in line for New York Jets
By Dan Hanzus
Around the League Writer
Published: Sept. 12, 2012

The New York Jets limit Santonio Holmes' availability to the media, a strategy meant to minimize the brush fires his words tend to set off.

This is an imperfect science, of course. Holmes still finds his way into the headlines, like last week, when he offered up the opinion that Mark Sanchez was rattled by the Tim Tebow trade. That was nice.

Wednesday should've been a gold mine. Big Week 1 win. Vindication for the offense. A trip to Pittsburgh to face the team that dumped him after his amazing catch that helped delivered a Super Bowl title.

But Holmes gave up little. There was no trashing of the Steelers. Asked about the Tebow-run Wildcat, he busted into jock speak. No fun.

"We run the plays coach (Tony) Sparano calls and we try to do them to perfection," Holmes said, via ESPN's Rich Cimini. "That's our focus. Whatever plays our offensive coordinator calls for us, it's our job to go out and execute."

Is this the new Santonio? Don't count on it. There are plenty of Wednesdays to come. Consider this one an outlier.

Jets need Holmes to play like No. 1 receiver he?s being paid to be
Jets Blog
September 19, 2012

Santonio Holmes stood in front of his locker Sunday night in Pittsburgh wearing a snarl and a ?Tone Time? T-shirt, but it?s been a long time since ?Tone Time? was anything more than a catchy alliteration.

The Jets wide receiver scored a touchdown against the Steelers but dropped two passes and vanished after the first quarter.

The 27-10 loss was another disappointing performance from the Jets? top offensive weapon. For all of the consternation about the Jets quarterbacks, their No. 1 wide receiver is the bigger problem on the offense. Holmes has not had a 100-yard receiving game since Nov. 21, 2010 ? a streak of 27 games.

FLIGHT DELAYED: Santonio Holmes, celebrating after a first-quarter touchdown in Sunday?s loss to the Steelers, his former team, has more headlines for his actions off-the-field than his production for the Jets.

Since that day against the Texans, Holmes has been rewarded with a five-year, $45 million contract by the Jets, got into a feud with quarterback Mark Sanchez, fought with the offensive line and been a drag on the locker room.

All of this has come with the Jets counting on him to be (and paying him like) a No. 1 wide receiver. The $9 million average annual value of his contract makes him the sixth highest-paid receiver in the NFL, ahead of players like Andre Johnson and Roddy White.

But fans would not care what the Jets were paying Holmes if he was producing.

Instead, they have gotten some game-winning catches, but no consistent production. Since Holmes last had 100 yards receiving, wide receivers have hit that mark 228 times (not including the playoffs), including such household names as Ben Obomanu and Andre Roberts.

Sunday?s game was the latest example, with him catching just three of the 11 passes thrown his way for 28 yards.

The Jets would argue that Holmes? job is not to rack up yards, but to score touchdowns and to force defenses to roll the safety his way, allowing them to run the ball ? things they feel he has done well. He has scored 15 touchdowns as a Jet, 13th most in the NFL over that span by a wide receiver. But he?s only scored multiple touchdowns in one game.

Sanchez-Holmes connection still bad
Jets' quarterback and receiver combo returns to scene of New Year's Day debacle
Updated: September 19, 2012
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The Horrible Memory Tour continues for the New York Jets. One week after returning to Pittsburgh for the first time since the 2010 AFC Championship Game, the Jets travel to Miami, where they became a national joke this past New Year's Day when their infighting went from the locker room to the huddle.

"I don't even remember that game, honestly," Santonio Holmes said Wednesday with a straight face, perhaps trying to convince himself one of the worst days of his professional career never happened.

Holmes was the villain that day. He was held without a catch for the first time in his career, whined about it to teammates and got tossed from his own huddle. He was benched and sulked on the sideline, and soon the world would learn of his rift with quarterback Mark Sanchez.

With the Jets headed back to the scene of their defining moment from the 2011 season -- and we mean that in a Napoleon-Waterloo kind of way -- it's a good time to take stock of the Sanchez-Holmes relationship. Has it improved since last season? Not really, at least not on the field.

Sanchez said they're communicating better than before, and he praised Holmes for showing the willingness to spend extra time in the film room. But as Bill Parcells used to tell his players, "Don't tell me about the labor; show me the baby."

So far, the baby ... er, Holmes still isn't clicking with his quarterback. On Sunday in Pittsburgh, Holmes was targeted a team-high 11 times, but only three resulted in completions, including a touchdown. A 3-for-11 ratio might get you a $5 million-a-year contract as a hitter in the major leagues, but for a quarterback-receiver tandem, it stinks.

After two games, Sanchez-to-Holmes is only 7-for-18, the second-worst success rate in the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Information. A year ago, they were at 50 percent, which, in fact, was the lowest percentage for a quarterback-receiver combo.

Holmes Has Become Focus by Design and by Necessity

Santonio Holmes, squabbling with Richard Marshall, caught nine passes for 147 yards in the Jets? overtime win over Miami.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? Santonio Holmes says life would probably be even better if penalty yardage on defensive backs could be tacked onto his statistics, and he would be awarded touchdowns on defensive pass-interference calls in the end zone.

?Any moment when you?re catching a ball in the end zone and you get a flag drawn, you don?t want that running back to be on the 1-yard line and steal your touchdown ? I?m sorry,? Holmes said Wednesday, drawing laughs.

Because the Jets are not exactly brimming with other offensive options right now, Holmes has become quarterback Mark Sanchez?s primary target. Holmes caught nine passes for 147 yards in a 23-20 overtime victory over Miami last Sunday.

Fourteen of Sanchez?s passes against the Dolphins came Holmes?s way, twice as many as the next player on the list, the rookie receiver Stephen Hill. Holmes is tied for sixth in the N.F.L. with 33 targeted passes, or 11 a game. He was 41st in the category last year, with 102.

?He should be a focal point because he is a playmaker,? Coach Rex Ryan said last week. ?He?s our No. 1 receiver, so if you?re getting the ball in his hands a lot, that?s a good thing.?

X-rays negative for Santonio Holmes
Updated: October 2, 2012
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets still don't have a diagnosis of Santonio Holmes' foot injury, but they expect their top wide receiver to miss multiple games.

Coach Rex Ryan confirmed Monday that X-rays of Holmes' left foot, taken Sunday at MetLife Stadium, were negative. Holmes underwent an MRI on Monday morning, but Ryan said the Jets didn't have the results, saying they were "shipped to different places."

Ryan said doctors haven't determined whether Holmes suffered muscle or ligament damage. Doctors ruled out an Achilles tendon injury.

According to a source, the Jets sent Holmes' MRI results to Charlotte-based foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, who performed the surgery on linebacker Calvin Pace's broken foot in August 2010.

Regardless of the diagnosis, Ryan expects Holmes to be sidelined indefinitely.

"I'm not sure how many weeks he'll be out, the real extent of the injury," Ryan said. "We just know the X-rays were negative. That's good news. Obviously, it looks doubtful for this week."

Holmes has Lisfranc injury
Posted by Mike Florio on October 3, 2012

As Tuesday unfolded, it became more and more clear that the Jets? assessment that receiver Santonio Holmes will miss ?weeks? more accurately is ?months.?

Per multiple reports, Holmes has a Lisfranc injury that is expected to sideline him for the rest of the season.

The ?L? word was one of the first uttered on Sunday by those close to the action when attempting to get a feel for Holmes? condition. Named for a French surgeon from the 1800s who first diagnosed the common horse-riding injury, it?s an affliction that strikes several NFL players per year. The most notable victim of the Lisfranc injury in 2011 was Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who had surgery and missed the rest of the season.

Jets place Santonio Holmes on injured reserve
By Brian McIntyre | Shutdown Corner

yahoo_santonioIR.jpg

(Getty Images)

As expected, New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum announced on Wednesday that wide receiver Santonio Holmes has been placed on season-ending injured reserve. The veteran receiver sustained a Lisfranc injury to his left foot at the start of the fourth quarter in Sunday's 34-0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Signed to a five-year, $45 million contract following the lockout and named a team captain by head coach Rex Ryan before the start of the 2011 regular season, Holmes caught 51 passes for 654 yards and eight touchdowns in '11 but was benched during the second half of the Jets' regular-season finale as teammates claimed he quit on the club.

Despite those allegations, Holmes remained on the roster, perhaps due to the $7.75 million in fully guaranteed base salary he was due in 2012. However, by keeping Holmes on the roster five days into the 2012 waiver period, which began right after Super Bowl XLVI, $7.5 million of Holmes' $11 million base salary in 2013 became fully guaranteed. That large financial guarantee may not be enough to preserve Holmes' spot on the roster moving forward as the Jets would save $3.75 million in cash (the non-guaranteed portion of his base salary plus a $250,000 workout bonus) and 2013 cap space by releasing Holmes in the offseason.

According to a source with knowledge of NFL cap space, the Jets have nearly $142 million in salary cap commitments in 2013, though $12 million of that total is from the acquired contract of offensive tackle Jason Smith which will void before the 2013 league year officially begins. With the cap expected to remain flat (around $121 million), the Jets may need to free up additional room.

Through four games, Holmes has team highs with 41 targets, 20 receptions and 272 receiving yards, adding one touchdown.
