WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Wouldn't mind seeing Holmes become a Bengal.
Frankly, if I'm a Jets fan, I think they both gotta go. Santonio has seemingly burnt a lot of bridges with his teammates. Sanchez doesn't look like he's capable of handling the pressure cooker that is NY. He has flat-out stunk most of his time there...especially this year down the stretch.

It was weird seeing Plax and Santonio.... On the bench... By themselves. Hate seeing a Buckeye, and a Super Bowl MVP like this. :(

Holmes better get his act together quickly or he will be out of the league and finding trouble elsewhere.

Mark Sanchez is currently the New York Jets' "franchise quarterback of the future". His backup Mark Brunell is 41 years old and obviously not a "long term" option. Until they get someone that can replace Sanchez (i.e. the franchise quarterback) he'll stay with the Jets.

Holmes has had problems with 2 NFL teams now, he definitely needs to get is act together.

Yep.

Great athlete, and always a Buckeye, but definitely some problems going on in the head. I hope he can get it together this offseason. We'll see.

Jets' Mark Sanchez says he'll "make things work" with Santonio Holmes
Published: Tuesday, January 03, 2012
By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger

Santonio Holmes raised questions about his future with the Jets after a turbulent season culminated in his benching during Sunday's season-ending loss at Miami. Today, quarterback Mark Sanchez said he can move forward with his No. 1 receiver.

"We?ve got to make things work," Sanchez said on ESPN 1050's "The Michael Kay Show." "That?s what you do as a teammate."

Coach Rex Ryan said he believes Holmes will be back with the Jets next season. Holmes was signed to a five-year, $45 million deal last summer and is due a guaranteed $7.75 million base salary in 2012.

In a year that came to be defined by the Jets' locker-room fragmentation, Holmes called out his offensive line and quarterback through the media and, leading up to Sunday's benching, picked a fight with Sanchez in a players' only film session arranged by Sanchez.

"You look at Santonio, he?s a heck of a player, and he?s been a great player for us," Sanchez said. "So we know that the ability is there, it?s not like he?s not a good player, that?s crazy to say."

Sanchez said part of his job is to unify and elevate his teammates, which is something he'll work on as the Jets aim to rebuild their team chemistry after finishing 8-8 and missing the playoffs.

"It?s my job as a leader on this team, whether you are a captain or not," Sanchez said, referencing Ryan's decision to do away with captains next year. "I'm the quarterback of the New York Jets, and it?s my job to do my very best with all the players we have and to keep playing and to get the best out of everybody. It?s going to be a good challenge for me, but I?m excited about it."

Sanchez then appeared to reference his relationship with Holmes specifically, adding: "Any time I get discouraged about it, I just flip on his highlight tape of the first year he came to us after missing four games and how much production he had. So it?s in there, I know that ability is in there. Any time you?re not winning and you lose games, guys get frustrated, and that frustration kind of manifests itself in some ways that I?m sure guys wish they could take back. That?s what happens when you are a competitor, but we?ll get it right, I'm confident we?ll get it right."

Jets owner Woody Johnson says Santonio Holmes will be back in 2012, doesn't rule out Peyton Manning
Published: Thursday, January 19, 2012
By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger

Jets owner Woody Johnson said today that receiver Santonio Holmes will be back in 2012, despite being at the center of the locker-room fragmentation that ultimately doomed the Jets this season.

In his first meeting with Jets beat writers since the season ended at 8-8 without a playoffs bid, Johnson said he is "concerned but confident" the relationship between Holmes and quarterback Mark Sanchez can be salvaged. He does not regret giving Holmes a five-year, $45 million contract this past offseason, explaining, "he may be one of the best players we have ever had here" and . He also denied money is the reason Holmes will be back.

"They've won a lot of games together, and one is good for the other," Johnson said. "Santonio makes the quarterback a lot better, and vice versa. So they have a good reason to iron this thing out. I think they can do it."

Ryan says Jets' Holmes wants to work on bond with Sanchez
NFL.com
Updated: Feb. 5, 2012

One issue that plagued the New York Jets as their 2011 season imploded was team chemistry. But coach Rex Ryan told the New York Post on Friday that oft-criticized wide receiver Santonio Holmes wants to work on that chemistry by spending a weekend away with similarly embattled quarterback Mark Sanchez.

"It seemed like that was what Santonio was talking about," Ryan told the newspaper. "I don't know if he's reached out to Mark yet and done anything, but that is what I believe to be true."

Shortly after they finished an 8-8 season, anonymous Jets players criticized Sanchez in an article that appeared in the New York Daily News, calling him "lazy and content."

Holmes hasn't escaped criticism, either, being called "a cancer" by an unnamed player and reportedly jawing with Sanchez during a December team meeting. Ryan also has said he shouldn't have made Holmes one of the team's captains.

"The first year, (Holmes and Sanchez) had good chemistry together," Ryan said Friday. "Whatever happened, happened, but we'll learn from it. I'm confident because I think we have to be successful, they have to be successful together. I know one thing, they are both extremely competitive."

Jets owner Woody Johnson has gone on record defending both Sanchez and Holmes, saying the two still can repair their relationship. Johnson recently said that he will meet with Sanchez soon.

Holmes joined the Jets in 2010 after four seasons in Pittsburgh, where he recorded at least 800 receiving yards every year, a feat he has yet to match in New York. This season, he had just 51 catches for 654 yards, though he did score eight times.

Jets set to stick with Holmes
Jets Blog
By BRIAN COSTELLO

It looks like Santonio Holmes will indeed be a Jet in 2012.

Holmes, whose season ended with a benching in Miami, is guaranteed $7.5 million of his $11 million 2013 salary if he still is on the Jets? roster this morning.

That means the Jets owe the wide receiver $15.25 million of guaranteed money, a number that means he won?t be going anywhere. The Jets have said publicly since the season ended they would keep Holmes, but it still seemed like something the team had to consider after the way Holmes? 2011 season went.

Holmes fought with quarterback Mark Sanchez at the end of the year then had no catches in the season finale against the Dolphins. Former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer benched Holmes with two minutes left in the game. After the game, one of his teammates called him a ?cancer.?

In his second season as a Jet Holmes was far less effective than in 2010. He had just 51 catches for 654 yards and eight touchdowns.

Even after the meltdown in Miami, Jets management defended Holmes.

?I think first off, to dismiss some of the good things that Santonio has done for the two years he?s been here, he?s been a tremendous player for us,? coach Rex Ryan said the day after the season ended. ?He?s won a ton of games for this franchise. And he?s been a good teammate.... Are there some things that we need to get corrected? Absolutely. And it?s not just with him, but others as well; myself, I?m the first one that looks at we have to change some things and we will change.

?Those are things we will look at in the off??season, and we will find a way to get this done, but I believe Santonio will be back next year.?

Ryan said last week Holmes and Sanchez are planning to get together to hash out their issues from last year.

Jets WR Holmes OK with Sanchez extension
Jets Blog
By BRIAN COSTELLO
March 13, 2012

One of the first questions people asked after the Jets gave quarterback Mark Sanchez a contract extension was: How will wide receiver Santonio Holmes react to this?

Holmes took to Twitter yesterday to let everyone know. Holmes, who is in Africa doing charity work, wished Sanchez well.

?Very happy for Mark & the entire team with his extension,? Holmes said in the tweet. ?Looking forward to getting back to work when I get back this amazing trip.?

Sanchez and Holmes did not get along at the end of last season, something that boiled over in the final game of the season and in the weeks following that loss to the Dolphins.

Sanchez said Friday he and Holmes have talked throughout the offseason and Sanchez even visited Holmes in Florida.

Jets? Sanchez Says a Meeting With Holmes Cleared the Air
By BEN SHPIGEL
New York Jets

Mark Sanchez flew to Orlando, Fla., a few weeks ago, but not for a Disney World vacation. His objective: a face-to-face meeting with Santonio Holmes. They ate. They spoke. And, according to Sanchez, they laughed.

It was, in other words, much more enjoyable than the conversations they shared toward the end of last season, when their feud consumed the Jets? locker room.

?I know it can work between us,? Sanchez said before a charity function Thursday in Manhattan. ?It?s not a question of if. It?s just a matter of when, and that?s now. I?m thrilled about that.?

Sanchez called reports of friction between the men overblown. Their relationship appeared to bottom out during the final week of the season, when they sparred during a receivers meeting and, the next day, when Holmes failed to attend another meeting called by Sanchez.

But Sanchez did not deny that their relationship had frayed. Still, he called the rift ?ancient history.?
