FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Santonio Holmes could complete his comeback Sunday.
Rex Ryan remained optimistic that the veteran wide receiver, listed as questionable for the New York Jets' season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will make his return from a foot injury that sidelined him most of last year.

Holmes was limited at practice Friday after getting a day off, and it's possible he could be active on a limited basis for the game Sunday.

"I'm hopeful he plays," Ryan said, "because he is a difference-maker."

Holmes seriously injured his left foot last September, and needed two surgeries to repair it, including one in February to remove screws. He has gradually increased what he can do, including running routes and cutting, but said Wednesday that he still wasn't close to being at 100 percent.

Holmes added that his availability could come down to being a game-time decision.

"That's, I guess, what questionable would mean," Ryan said. "What is it, a 50-50 chance or something like that?"

Santonio Holmes steady in return
September, 8, 2013
By Jane McManus | ESPNNewYork.com

EAST RUTHERORD, NJ -- After two surgeries and months of rehabilitation from his Lisfranc injury last season, wide receiver Santonio Holmes made it back on the field for the first Jets game of 2013.

“I played,” Holmes said. “I played the whole game to the end.”

Holmes played 23 snaps in the first half alone in an 18-17 victory over the visiting Buccaneers. He was targeted three times by Geno Smith and caught one pass for 13 yards. In a twist, Holmes was denied his first pass by Darrelle Revis, now with Tampa Bay, who also played in his first game back from an ACL injury.

“We both felt good about being able to cover each other throughout the game,” Holmes said. "We just told each other good luck and stay healthy this season,” Holmes said.

Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes says he came out of Patriots game physically fine

Thursday’s 13-10 loss at New England was not a banner day for the Jets’ wide receivers, who did little to help rookie quarterback Geno Smith by dropping passes. Smith wasn’t perfect, of course, as he threw three interceptions, all in the fourth quarter.

But Smith is getting his best receiver, Santonio Holmes, back into a regular role.

Holmes was limited to 45 of 77 snaps in the season-opening win over Tampa Bay, his first game back from two left foot surgeries. He was targeted three times in that game and had one catch for 13 yards. With Jeremy Kerley sidelined by a concussion at New England, Holmes had a bigger role, as he played 69 of 74 snaps. He was targeted six times and had three catches for 51 yards.

The medical staff’s plan was to limit Holmes for the opener. Four days later, Holmes played almost the entire game against the Patriots without incident – an encouraging sign for his progress. Holmes said he is not yet close to 100 percent healthy, but also said he didn’t suffer any physical setbacks on Thursday.

“I finished the game pretty good and everything is fine,” he said.

NY Jets WR Santonio Holmes maintains that he's not 100 percent healthy yet
Holmes tallied a career-high 154 receiving yards in Gang Green's win over the Bills.
By Kevin Armstrong / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Don't tell Santonio Holmes that he’s back.

Holmes, who missed most of last season with a Lisfranc injury in his left foot, maintained that he is not yet fully healthy despite hauling in a career-high 154 receiving yards in Sunday’s 27-20 victory over the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium.

“I still have a long way to go,” Holmes said.

Holmes has continued to develop a rapport with rookie quarterback Geno Smith, and he has enjoyed new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg’s receptiveness to the players on offense. Holmes acknowledged the Jets’ willingness to stretch the field with downfield passing, but noted that they need to keep focusing on the little things such as the Titans’ tendencies to strip the ball.

“We just have to be sound in our technique,” Holmes said.

Santonio Holmes Expected To Miss A Few Games With Hamstring Injury
Thin At WR, Jets Considering Outside Options

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) – The New York Jets have released wide receiver Ben Obomanu, and are considering other options to help offset injuries to Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill.

Obomanu had one catch for 8 yards in the team’s 38-13 loss to Tennessee on Sunday, and was called for three penalties.

Holmes, sidelined most of last season with a foot injury, tweaked a hamstring at Tennessee and is expected to miss a few games.

“Nothing new on him with the hamstring,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said Monday. “Obviously, he didn’t finish the game, so we’ll see where that is. And the same thing with (Chris) Ivory and (Dee) Milliner that stayed back. We’ll see how they progress and maybe we’ll have more of an update on Wednesday for you on those two. But as far as Holmes is concerned, I know he didn’t finish the game and it was a hamstring injury.”

Santonio Holmes calls out NY Jets over lack of catches: ‘I can’t throw it to myself'
Holmes echoed a similar statement by Giants WR Hakeem Nicks in trying to explain how he had just one catch for 25 yards after Sunday’s loss to the Titans.

By Seth Walder / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Friday, October 4, 2013

You have to hand it to Santonio Holmes. And you better throw it to him, too.

The Jets’ mouthy receiver set a new standard for brashness Thursday, challenging rookie quarterback Geno Smith to get him the ball — even though he likely won’t play this week.

At least Keyshawn Johnson was healthy when he wrote his book, “Just Give Me the Damn Ball.”

”I can’t throw it to myself and catch it, otherwise I would,” Holmes said of the 38-13 loss to the Titans last Sunday, when he had one catch for 25 yards. “I played 49 plays, and all I know is I had one catch. That’s all I can attest for.

“I just have to do my part, which is the position that I’m playing, which is primary X receiver, and a lot of times I get double-covered, taken out of plays, so the progression and the read from the quarterback have to go elsewhere.”

Holmes’ timing was impeccable. Just a couple minutes after mimicking Giants wideout Hakeem Nicks, who said two weeks ago, “I can’t throw it to myself,” Holmes sounded like someone who will miss Monday’s game in Atlanta with a bad hamstring.

“My hamstring feels like it hurts,” Holmes said. “If it makes sense, that’s exactly how it feels right now.”

Injury report: Not looking good for Holmes
October, 10, 2013
By Matt Ehalt | ESPNNewYork.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets head coach Rex Ryan acknowledged it's not looking like wide receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring/foot) will play Sunday against Pittsburgh. Holmes has yet to practice since he strained his hamstring against Tennessee on Sept. 29.

i

Holmes"The fact that he didn’t practice today, I don’t know if you want to say it doesn’t look good or whatever," Ryan said before adding that Holmes is a game-time decision type player.

Holmes said it's not his call when it comes to playing against his former team. He said he feels good and it's just the hamstring that is ailing him now, not his surgically repaired left foot.

"Whenever the trainers put me back on the field," Holmes said. "It's up to the doctors right now."

Holmes eyes return after bye week
October, 24, 2013
By Matt Ehalt | ESPNNewYork.com
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring) strongly hinted Thursday that he may not return until after the team's bye week. The Jets have two more games before going on their bye, and then return with a road game at the Bills on Nov. 17.

"At this point, I think the bye week is coming at a great time, giving me what, five, maybe six weeks to get healthy," Holmes said. "Should be ready to roll."

Veteran receiver Santonio Holmes hopes his hamstring is healthy enough to play by the end of the Jets' bye week.

Asked to clarify his comments, Holmes became hostile with reporters, directing any comments to his previous remarks before essentially reiterating what he said. A return after the bye week would mean Holmes' hamstring injury, which he suffered on Sept. 29, sidelined him for six weeks.

"The bye week will allow me to get healthy for my return," Holmes said.

Santonio Holmes inching closer to return
October, 30, 2013
By Kieran Darcy | ESPNNewYork.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Santonio Holmes did not practice Wednesday, but he did take the next step on the comeback trail.

Holmes participated in position-group drills with the rest of the New York Jets' wide receivers, running routes and catching passes, for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury Sept. 29 against the Tennessee Titans.

i

Holmes"Making good progress every day," Holmes said after practice. "That's pretty much all I can keep doing, taking it day by day and making good progress."

Holmes has missed the team's past four games. The Jets have their bye week following Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, and Holmes said last week that "I think the bye week is coming at a great time, giving me what, five, maybe six weeks to get healthy." But Holmes looked good running those routes Wednesday afternoon.

Still, the more likely scenario is Holmes returning after the bye, on Nov. 17 in Buffalo. When asked if he is optimistic he will play against the Saints, Holmes said, "I still don't know. At this point, I was only able to do individuals. I'm pretty sure once things get rolling and I'm able to practice, that's when I'll be able to play."

The Jets certainly could use Holmes' help. They are currently ranked 22nd in the NFL in passing yards, averaging 210 per game.

In four games, Holmes has 10 receptions for 243 yards. That's not a lot of catches, but he is still capable of a big performance. In Week 3 against the Bills, he had five catches for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Jets' Santonio Holmes to return
Updated: November 11, 2013
By Rich Cimini | ESPN.com
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets' sputtering passing attack will receive a double boost Sunday with the expected return of their most accomplished skill-position players, wide receiver Santonio Holmes and tight end Kellen Winslow.

Holmes, who has missed five games with a hamstring injury, practiced Monday as the Jets returned from a six-day break over their bye week. They face the Buffalo Bills on the road Sunday, and barring a setback, Holmes will be in the lineup.

"I think he'll play," coach Rex Ryan said. "He looks good to me. I certainly hope so."

A long return for Santonio Holmes
November, 21, 2013
By Jane McManus | ESPN.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Santonio Holmes was limited today, very limited if you listened to Rex Ryan describe how much the wide receiver played, just a day after missing all of Wednesday's practice.

“I've been limited all season and I'm pretty sure that's the way it's going to be until the end of the season,” Holmes said. “To continue managing the performance in practice so I can perform on Sunday.”

2013 STATS

  • Rec12
  • Yds314
  • TD1
  • Avg26.2

Which doesn't always happen. It may be time to face what is becoming a apparent; that Santonio Holmes isn't all the way back from a Lisfranc injury that required two surgeries in the offseason, or from a hamstring injury that contributed to missing a five-game stretch by Week 10 of the season.

“Both of those things are being treated round the clock really still,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. “He's in a situation where he practices on certain days and doesn't on certain days. And so we're still in that mode.”

Holmes returned last Sunday against the Bills, when he played in 53 percent of the snaps. That is significantly less than his usual workload, and well below David Nelson (83 percent), Stephen Hill (88 percent) and tight end Jeff Cumberland (81 percent).

To date, Holmes has 12 catches for 314 yards, and it doesn't look like he'll be ramping that up any time soon.

Following the loss to the Bills game, Holmes missed a day of practice and had just a few team reps on Thursday. So is there a chance he might not play in Baltimore?

“Why wouldn't I?” Holmes responded when asked.

Santonio Holmes sees just three snaps
December, 1, 2013
By Jane McManus | ESPNNewYork.com

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Santonio Holmes, who missed two straight practices before Sunday, might have done more jogging for trainers on the field than he did running in the game.

i

HolmesThe New York Jets' medical staff cleared the wide receiver and he was active, but took part in just three first-half plays before appearing to sit out the rest of the 23-3 loss to the Dolphins.

“It was coach’s decision,” Holmes said. “(I had) limited plays coming off an injury. We wanted to monitor that and make sure everything is OK for the rest of the season.”

Holmes is the Jets' highest-paid offensive skill player currently on the active roster, but he hasn’t been playing like it. After surgeries to repair a season-ending Lisfranc injury last year, Holmes missed five games this season and hasn’t been that productive during the past two, despite being technically active.

Coach Rex Ryan said the hamstring has bothered Holmes more than the foot at this point, and hasn’t said there was a setback in his rehab. Holmes, for his part, responds that he feels good whether he is inactive, practicing or able to play.

The only way to get an accurate picture is by watching him play, and Sunday there wasn’t much to see.

As Holmes has stalled, so has the offense, which didn’t score a passing touchdown in the month of November.

“It’s disappointing.,” Holmes said. “We work really hard during the week. We work on our red zone offense. We pride ourselves on scoring touchdowns. In the beginning of the season we were in the top 5 or top 10 through the first part of the season, and suddenly we have a big dropoff. We definitely have to get back to the drawing board and figure out how we keep this thing going.”

NY Jets WR Santonio Holmes missing ' burst' says Rex Ryan after returning from injury
Coaches made decision that Holmes would only play in 'must' situation, which never arrived on Sunday.

Santonio Holmes is still slowed by a hamstring injury.

Despite activating Santonio Holmes for Sunday’s 23-3 loss to the Dolphins Sunday, the Jets quickly realized their top receiver’s hamstring wasn’t as healthy as they needed it to be. Holmes played the opening snap but only was in on one other play the rest of the game.

“We noticed as coaches... that the burst wasn’t quite there,” Rex Ryan said. “So instead of him possibly having a setback, we were only going to play him (in) what we said was a ‘must’ situation because we can’t afford him to take a step back.”

That “must” situation never came. Holmes after the game called it a “coach’s decision” for him to not be out there more.

Apparently taking some heat from fans on Twitter, Holmes tweeted Sunday night, “Not trolling anyone, just wondering why the negativity towards me when nobody knows the reason.”

Ryan finally admitted, on ESPN Radio Monday, what was obvious: that Holmes had tweaked his hamstring on Wednesday in practice, which is why he was only barely able to play Sunday.

“He’s a presence, he gives us a presence out there,” Ryan said. “And if he’s healthy enough, you want him out there.”

They just didn’t deem him healthy enough.

Ryan conceded the team may have been more likely to keep Holmes active because Jeremy Kerley was also out.
